In Canterlot
Celestia is waiting for Twilight and her friends at the train station with Luna, ignoring all the ponies stopping to ogle at the two rulers of their kingdom. The princesses are usually very sociable when out of the castle but today they've got other matters on their minds than their manners.
"Where are they, Luna?" The older sister frets as she watches other ponies disembark from the train, but seeing no sign of the six ponies nor the purple little scaly dragon that's glued to their sides.
"Easy sister, you know how those little ponies are, Rarity probably bought her whole boutique with them." Lune teases with a smile. Celestia cracks a smile at her little sister's innocent teasing. Then the two sisters hear Pinkie Pie's high pitched laughter. "It's the princesses!" She squeals, running to bow in front of them. Giggling, the two ruling sisters look at the pink party pony as she's joined by her friends. "Welcome ponies, sorry to cut this short but, Twilight, we need you to come with me. Luna will escort your friends to the castle before meeting us." Celestia explains before the ponies can speak. Twilight, noticing his stressed the rulers of Equestria are, decides to go along with their orders.
Twilight looks at the building in front of her and Princess Celestia in confusion.
"Uh, Princess, why are we at the Canterlot hospital?" She hears the princess of the Sun sigh. "You'll find out in a few minutes my little pony." Princess Celestia says softly walking into the pony hospital.
Upon seeing the eldest ruler of Equestria, every doctor and nurse stop what they're doing to bow, Princess Celestia ignores them and carries on walking.
The princess of the Sun stops at a door and opens it, allowing her student to go in.
Twilight sees her older brother, Shining Armor lying in a bed, Twilight runs to her older brother's side, grasping his hoof.
"Twily, missed you kid." He says weakly, Twilight nuzzles her brother. "Missed you too, b.b.b.f.f. Why are you in the hospital, are you ill?" Twilight asks her brother. "Twily, you need to listen to me very closely," Twilight hears Princess Celestia move behind her and wrap one of her white wings around the purple pony. "There was an accident, Twily, Mom and Dad didn't make it." Shining Armor says, Twilight gasps, tears filling her eyes and shaking her head in denial, not wanting to believe her mom and dad are dead. "Why are you in hospital, tell me now." Twilight demands the order in her voice. Shining Armor sighs before he looks at the Princess who nods in return.
"Twi, I'm dying, I only have a little more time left." Shining Armor says, Twilight's legs buckle and only the weight of having Celestia's wing around her, stops Twilight from crashing to the floor of the hospital. Twilight looks at her brother. Not only has she lost her parents, she's also losing her big brother too.
"B..but you can't leave, Shining!" Twilight exclaims, jumping on the bed next to her big brother not caring if she gets scolded.
Princess Celestia watches as the little purple pony falls asleep, cuddled up to her older dying brother in the hospital bed, Shining Armor nuzzling his little sister every so often.
"Princess Celestia, I need you to know something." The older unicorn says quietly, Celestia looks at the white pony.
"Of course, Shining Armor, what is it?" The princess asks. Shining Armor sighs as he looks at the princess.
"I just want you to know that me and my parents can't thank you enough for being there for Twilight when we weren't there, in fact me and my parents discuss that should anything happen to me or our parents, we would like you to adopt Twilight and become her mother."
