Surprise! Chp. 4
Hello Everyone! Hope you are enjoying reading this story as much as I am writing it. This chapter is a little longer so I hope you enjoy it! Keep reviewing if you so desire I love reading your comments!
DB comes in the break room and looks at Sara. "Hey sorry it can't wait. I need you to go back to the casino and look for those turquoise fibers, they may be a link to our bomber." Sara nodded, "Okay, let me drop Henry off with the sitter and I will head over there straight away." DB nods and leaves, calling out for Hodges to move his things to the top of the pile.
Gil looks up and nods, "I can watch him, but I don't want to push you past what you're comfortable." Sara turns to him, "that's kind Gil really, but I texted Lily earlier and she said that she would love to watch him." Gil nods, "Ah yes I see." Sara bends down, "Henry will you say goodbye to Gil? We have to go to Miss Lily's now." Henry waves at Gil before running over to give him a hug. "Thanks for playing dinosaurs with me!" Gil nearly collapses from the feeling of having his son hug him for the first time. This is my boy and I can't help, but love him. Oh I love him so much.
Henry lets go and grabs his mother's hand. Sara turns to him, "We can discuss things later, but I have to go now." Gil nodded, "yes I understand… erm maybe we can get dinner or breakfast? Whatever would be easiest for you.." he trails off. "We can do breakfast tomorrow morning. I'll let you get settled and I need to make some head way on this case." Gil nods, "I understand."
Henry and Sara leave the office as Sara grabs her case. He smiles and starts talking faster than Gil thought possible. He smiled as he saw them together. She's a natural he thought. Gil stood there and realized he wanted to be part of his sons life in some capacity however Sara would let him. But truthfully, he needed some answers before he approached that conversation with her. He needed to understand what was going on and if or where he could possibly fit in the picture.
Gil caught Nick in the hallway and stopped him, "umm hey we need to talk." Nick turned to him, "figured you'd want to… let me get you a cup of coffee." Gil nodded as Nick grabbed a couple to-go cups from the break room and they stepped outside. "I figured you wouldn't want everyone listening in." Gil nodded, "that would be preferable." Nick sat on the bench outside the lab and Gil took the seat next to him looking around slightly to make sure no one was listening. Nick looks ahead, "alright, what do you want to know?"
Gil sighed. "Nicky, why didn't she tell me?" Nick laughed, "She didn't tell you Grissom because you left. How was she supposed to tell you? You were gone and divorce papers were signed. How was she supposed to say "hey ex-husband, I'm pregnant with your kid?!" Gil shook his head. "Yeah that's.. that's fair." Gil pauses, "Nicky, what was it like when she told all of you? Did she tell you?" Nick paused to collect his thoughts. "She told Catherine first. I think because in part she wanted some help figuring out how to talk to everyone else and also what she should do. Fin got brought into the conversation pretty quickly after that. Between the three of them, they helped Sara gain the courage to tell everyone, but DB until it was necessary for her to stay out of the field. She had a hard time with the pregnancy, but we were always there for her. We always made sure she had someone with her at the appointments so she wasn't alone. I'm pretty sure Lily and Catherine were her personal baby gear genies. She wasn't alone in any of it unless she wanted to be. We wanted to make sure that she was okay because well, Sara is family." Gil sat back taking it all in. "Was she okay? Is she okay?" Gil nearly whispered. Nick looked at Gil. "She's doing really well. She's happy and she loves Henry. She isn't working the way she used to, trust me she's still a workaholic, but she goes home so she can see Henry and keeps up with him. Jack moving back has really helped her, plus she likes having the house not feel so lonely. He's a good guy and honestly he's one good thing that came out of the situation of Sara in foster care and Henry." Nick continued, "Henry is a good boy. He loves her so much Gil. He's a bright kid and we love him. We love having him around too. Greg, Morgan and I come over often just because he's just a joy to be around and we want him to know that people care about him and he has a family." Gil nodded, "thank you for taking care of them." He paused wanting to ask another question, but he didn't know if he had the stomach for it. He decided against it for now and asked a different one, "do you think she will let me be a part of his life?" Nick paused. "Truthfully, I'm not sure. All she ever wanted was for you to say sorry and come back. I'm surprised she's behaving as well as she is. She usually gets pissed anytime anyone brings you up." Nick continued, "Henry is well loved and he's her boy. She wants what's best for him no matter what so if you want that too, then she might be willing to listen and have a conversation. Honestly Grissom, you need to sort out why you want to come back into either one of their lives before you ask her. You need to figure out if you want Sara or Henry or both, but that something only you know." Gil nodded, "I understand." Nick turned and looked at Gil again, "if you hurt her, Greg and I along with ghost Warrick will beat you senseless and I hope you know that." Gil chuckled, "I wouldn't expect anything less from any of you." Nick stood up, "hey glad to hear it, well I have to get back to the office. Do you have somewhere to stay for the night?" Gil nodded, "I've got a place, I'll see you later."
Gil left the office and started walking towards anywhere, but where he was. He needed some time to think more than anything. Sara had his son and was surrounded by his old team and not a single one of them decided to tell him. Gil Grissom, their old supervisor and friend. I can't believe even Cath didn't say a single thing to me in any of her letters. How could she do that to me? Gil huffed angered by the situation he was now presented in. Sara never let me know that I have a son, that we had a child when.. when.. Even in his mind he couldn't spit out the words because he was so angry. When she knew how much we wanted to have children. Gil stopped and sat at a bench. I left our marriage and abandoned her and the last thing she wanted was for that to happen with our child because that's what happened to her. She couldn't put Henry through that and still call herself a mother. She's afraid I would hurt him the way I hurt her. She's trying to think of what's best for him even if it means I have no part in his life… or her's. Gil paused and took a breath. I have to be willing to recognize what's best for him too, even if that's not me. Gil continued his walk towards the hotel pondering the decisions that lay ahead of him and how he was to navigate them.
Sara dropped Henry off earlier in the day and went to her crime scene. She went the the casino and looked for the fibers DB sent her to find. The bomb made it nearly impossible to find anything, but she found a singular fiber that she then took to trace for analysis. She smiled pleased with her work and DB later comes in to tell her to go home early. She smiles and does exactly that. She drives over to Lily's house and attempts to think through the past twelve hours. She takes a breath and lets it fill and escape her lungs. This is not what I had in mind for today. Sara pulls up to Lily's and sees Henry out in the front yard playing with Lily on the porch. She smiles knowing that the one thing she wants is for him to be happy and he is. It doesn't matter if Gil is here or in his life as long as Henry is happy. Sara gets out of the car and Henry runs over to give her a hug. Sara bends down and scoops her son up and kisses him on the cheek. "I've missed you buddy. Have you had fun?" Henry nods and Lily smiles. "Thanks again for watching him." Lily laughs, "he's easy, Sara. I enjoy him genuinely, keep bringing him over!" Sara turns, "Oh I will plan on it as always." Lily asks, "do you want to come in for a minute?" Sara responds, "I would, but we have dinner plans and I need to get someone cleaned up." Lily raises her eyebrow knowing full well Gil was back in town . "Oh?" Sara shakes her head, "No just some family friends, I have that later," she whispers. Lily nods, "well if you need a sitter you know where to find me." Sara starts putting Henry in the car, "yeah will do thanks again, Lily." Sara gets in the car and takes off as they both wave to Lily.
Henry babbles in the back seat as Sara drives home. She pulls into the driveway and sees Louis waving and Henry runs out to greet him. Sara smiles at him and they hug was Henry runs into the house. "Jack wanted to get a head start on the food prep." Sara nods at Louis. "I figured as much," they hug each other and walk inside. Henry runs over to Jack before Sara tells him to go play in the living room for a little bit. Louis grabs a beer and looks up at Sara who nods and he grabs another for her. Jack looks at her as he stirs something that smells delicious. "So do I want to know how it went with he-who-shall-not-be-named?" Sara sighed and leaned against the kitchen counter. "I mean he met Henry. I'm not sure where it's going to go, but what's new with that?" Jack and Louis both nodded. Louis asks, "how was Henry? Does he know who he is?" Sara replied, "no I figured that would be a conversation for another time, if we want to have it." Louis nods. Jack retorts, "well I can bash his skull in if he tries to hurt either of you." Louis chuckles, "make that two of us. We love you both and the last thing either of us want is for you to get hurt." Sara chuckles, "I hope we won't have to result to that fellas, but I value the sentiment." Sara continues, "I think I just have to decide what's best for Henry and hope that Gil wants the same. Truthfully, I don't even know if he wants to be in Henry's life or if he just wants to leave again." Jack turns and looks at her, "it also depends on how much you want Gil back in your life as well because he will be if he's in Henry's." Sara nodded, "yeah something I have been thinking about too. I just… even when we were married somedays I never knew what he wanted." Louis nodded, "yeah and that would drive anyone crazy Sara." Sara takes another swig of her beer. "So I have to decide what I'm willing to put up with, but also what I'm willing to put Henry through and what kind of co-parenting situation would work for him if there is one that would." Jack continued to work with the food before saying, "well he let you go so I doubt he's very bright. So if he knows what's good for him he will start by apologizing and trying to make amends with the world's best baby mama but that's my bias showing." Louis chuckles before kissing Jack on the cheek as Sara smiles. "You know Gil doesn't have anything on the three of us," Louis says. Sara smiled at her friends and Louis gave her a side hug as Jack continued to prep dinner. They later sat down to eat and between the four of them they couldn't stop laughing all evening. Sara had a difficult day seeing Gil again, but it was so relaxing for her to be with people she knew she could trust. Always.
Jack and Louis offered to put Henry to bed so Sara could take a nice long soak in the tub. Sara was grateful for the option to take some much needed alone time. She undressed and laid in the tub after putting some lavender bath oil in it. She sighed heavily as the day washed over her and her muscles started to relax. Seeing him was a lot harder on me then I thought it would be. She thought to herself. I wonder if he still… no don't go there Sara you can't go there not now. Sara shook her head and tried to put the thought out of her mind. He came back to help with the case. He didn't even come back to see Henry because he didn't even know that the boy existed. I can't ask more from him when he didn't even know the whole situation walking in. The question is also am I willing to share Henry and his life with Gil? Sara shakes her head. Gil. What are you going to do and say tomorrow? What do you even want from us? Maybe nothing and I have to live with that rejection again. Sara paused. Maybe I am not ready to watch Gil not only reject me again, but reject the one good thing in my life. Sara closed her eyes and tried to put her racing thoughts out of her mind. She knew she still cared about Gil, but the question was always going to be if he cared for her like she did him. She got out of the bath and dried off before wrapping herself in her robe. She went to Henry's room to check on him. She gently opened the door to see him asleep. She smiled. At the end of the day his happiness was what mattered to her and for now her boy was alive and happy and today that had to be enough. Tomorrow's problems could wait for one evening.
