Surprise! chp. 6

Hello everyone! Sorry it's been a minute with the new semester starting back up again.

So the reason I was intending to bring in Lady Heather, was because she is one of the few people that actually could get Gil to talk about his feelings. In this story, Sara has had to do some growing up since becoming a mom and so I wanted to portray some of that maturity. She isn't as jealous or upset about Gil being Gil because she doesn't have time to be. She has other priorities. Gil on the other hand hasn't had time to grow up so in part I am trying to portray him as close to how he was portrayed in Immortality. He had multiple opportunities to tell Sara how he felt or start a conversation, but he doesn't until he talks to Heather and Sara finds out about it. So, I think that a meeting with Heather would help give Gil the space to have that conversation. However, I went in a different direction so I hope you enjoy it. Anyways, once again, thanks for sticking with the story and please continue to review! Hope you enjoy!

Gil started driving and didn't stop. He wasn't sure where he was going, but he wasn't ready to sit just yet. He needed a moment to attempt to sort through what he was feeling. Sara hadn't said no to him. He was going to have an opportunity to be part of his son's life, but it would mean he would have to make a choice- he would have to leave San Diego and likely find a more stable job so he would be close to his son. In many ways, he would then also be just as close to Sara. Gil knew he wanted her back, the moment he saw her, but even more so when he saw Henry. She knew how they both wanted children and he wanted to be there permanently for both of them. Sara deserved more of him than what he gave her. He sighed heavily remembering how deeply he had hurt her and how it was likely going to mean he had to face her and risk getting hurt. He had to tell her that he loved her and wanted her back.

Gil parked his car in a lot off of the Strip. He took a heavy breath in and tried to collect himself. He needed to recognize that this was what he wanted, but he had no idea if it was what Sara wanted. In part, he wanted some intel on the situation and how she would respond without asking her outright. He wanted to ease into the conversation a little more so than he had previously done. He had to let her lead in some ways and decide for herself what she is looking for. He can't push her. She as always knows her mind and what she wants and he has to let her take what she needs.

Gil pulled out his phone and dialed, "Jim? Want to grab a beer?" Brass smiled to himself and told Gil to meet him at the Eclipse because he needed to be close for work reasons. Gil started a short drive from where he was parked over to the Eclipse. He handed the rental car keys to the valet and walked in. Brass greeted him at the door. "Heard you were back in town." Gil nodded. Jim looked at him and knew. "You saw Henry didn't you?" Gil nodded again. Jim said, "come on. Looks like we need to have a chat." Gil followed the other man. They sat down at the bar and the bartender handed them two glasses with a double of single malt scotch in them. Gil raised an eyebrow but Jim looked him and said, "they know me here." Gil smiled a little before taking a small sip.

"So what do you want to know?" Jim said before he also took a sip. Gil sighed. "Well what should I know and what do I want to know?" Jim took a small breath in. "Gil he's your kid. There hasn't been anyone else. I don't think she's even been on a serious date since Henry was born." Gil breathed out surprised that he was holding in his breath. "Has she been okay? I mean Jim why didn't she tell me? I deserved to know." Jim replied, "Gil you took off and left and didn't come back to Vegas. How was she even supposed to get in touch with you? Like most of us only hear from you once in a blue moon." Gil sat and listened. He knew he hadn't done the best job keeping up with anyone, but most of all he failed Sara and in turn Henry. "I shouldn't have been so distant. It's just easier sometimes being alone instead of one more conversation where Sara and I couldn't stop fighting." Jim laughed, "Gil you don't have to lecture me about running from relationships. I did it for years and you know what? I'm alone. It's my own fault because I couldn't see her perspective or talk about why I was so distant. It doesn't matter what relationship you're in. You have to communicate. Don't make my mistake and not communicate with your kid." Jim took a swig of his scotch and felt in burn going down his throat.

Gil nodded. Jim continued, "Henry deserves the best, Gil. He's a good kid. He loves Sara and even though he's four, in many ways I think he keeps her sane. She's needed him just as much as he has needed her. She loves that little boy more than anything and if she's letting you into his life you need to recognize the gift that is." Gil nodded, "All she wants is what's best for him and I respect that. She wants him to be happy with or without me in his life." Jim replied, "So you have to decide a few things: what is best for Henry and what is best for Sara too." Gil nodded. "I will miss her the rest of my life, Jim. She's been my best friend." Jim responded, "then you need to tell her need to tell her what she meant to you." Gil nodded and though carefully. "I just don't want to overstep. She has let me into Henry's life, but not necessarily hers. I don't want to put either relationship in jeopardy." Jim said, "then you follow the evidence, Gil. Take your cues from her. She will tell you what to do if you're able to listen."
