Veela Magic

In the next few days Ted didn't feel any better. In the beginning he had tried convincing himself that he should just get used to it, but Toby hadn't had time for him ever since he had started dating Victoire because they were constantly hanging around together, and Lorin wasn't an ideal understudy for his best friend.

Ted hadn't talked to Victoire, and he tended to stay out of her way as well as possible. Since the school year had started, she had treated him like he was air and Ted was kind of annoyed about that.

The first time they talked to each other was in the beginning of October, when they were occasionally alone in the common room. It was late and most of the others were already in bed, so was Toby.

When Ted suddenly wanted to stand up, Victoire opened her mouth and Ted was very surprised as he heard her speak.

"Stay", she said and pointed at the spot next to her.

Ted looked at her and their eyes met.

Almost mechanically he sat down next to her, as if it had been an order he just had to follow.

Had it been her great-grandmother's Veela magic?

He hadn't been taken in by it ever since he had been 13.

"You're acting weird this year", Victoire said and closed the book she had been reading shut.

He was weird this year? Was she serious?

"I had the impression that you didn't want to talk to me", said Ted aggressively.

Usually this wasn't how he was, and she examined him with her big deep blue eyes.

"Well, I had the impression that you are staying out of my way", she asserted.

"Possible", Ted replied and looked at her shut book as if it was very interesting.

Why had he just said that?

"And you don't even feel it's necessary to wish me a good morning anymore!", Victoire continued.

"Well, you didn't feel it was necessary to tell me you are going out with Toby", it burst out of Ted.

Surprised she opened her mouth and it seemed as if she wanted to say something but closed it then.

"I didn't say anything because it was supposed to be a surprise", she said.

"Very surprising indeed", Ted snapped.

Victoire insecurely looked at him for a while but didn't speak any more.

After a while she packed her stuff hastily and then disappeared into the girls' dormitory.

Next morning Victoire wasn't at breakfast and Ted nearly wouldn't have noticed, if Toby hadn't asked her best friend Belicia McLaw where Victoire was.

"Oh, she said she didn't feel well", Belicia replied and threw an apologetic look at Toby

"She went to the hospital wing, but she said she didn't like any visitors."

Toby frowned but didn't make any further questions.

In the following class Ted had a hard time concentrating, tortured by the question if he hadn't been too hard towards Victoire and he decided to visit her in the upcoming free period even if it was against her will.

So, he declared in front of Toby that he had to go back to the common room and ran in that direction but took a secret passage which led him immediately up to the hospital wing.

"Mr Lupin, what can I do for you?" asked Madame Pomfrey who was very old.

"I just wanted to see Victoire Weasley, Ma'am", Ted replied and tried to catch a glimpse at the beds hoping he would see her somewhere.

"I'm sorry, but she hasn't been here today. Why? Is there anything wrong with her?"

Ted frowned and considered what he could answer.

"I think I've been tricked. Please excuse my disruption. It won't happen again."

„Tut mir Leid, aber die war heute nicht hier, warum? Stimmt etwas nicht mit ihr?"

And before Madame Pomfrey could answer, he had vanished.

If Victoire hadn't been in the hospital wing, where was she?

Ted started to worry. Victoire had never done something like this before.

Suddenly he met Belicia and Juliet Sawyer in the corridor, both good friends of Victoire's, and before he could even think about it, his tongue started to speak.

"Victoire isn't in the hospital wing. Tell me where she is!"

"I hardly doubt it's your business, Lupin", declared Belicia and Juliet giggled. Then they vanished.

Firstly, Ted considered following them, but concluded that going to the owlery and looking there for Bert would be a better idea. Bert was an eagle owl his godfather Harry had given him for his first school year in Hogwarts. If he couldn't talk to Victoire in person, then he should at least write a letter.

So, he nuzzled in his bag he was still carrying around to find his quill and a piece of parchment.

Dear Victoire,

I really need to say sorry for my behaviour in the last few weeks, also that we fought last night.

I hope you can forgive me because all I want is that we could be friends again like before all of it. I really miss you and I know now that you were right: I've been an idiot.

Love, Ted

He put the letter around Bert's leg and made him fly off. In the end he sighed and went back to the common room in the basement where he'd just try to do his homework.
