Stuck
Chapter 6
Christine loved the farm. She didn't love Mike's mother. Mary Alice was a hard woman to please and she was not thrilled with Mike's relationship with Christine. Paul was alright and treated Christine well. Christine just wasn't sure if it was her that Mary Alice had issues or with the relationship in general. And she hated not sharing a bed with Mike. It wasn't all about sex. She just missing him holding her. She understood Mike's desire to adhere to his parent's rules. Late one night, when she couldn't sleep; she slipped out of bed and headed down the stairs to get a drink of water. She was halfway down the stairs when she heard Mary Alice and Mike talking in the kitchen.
"Son, I don't know what you are trying to accomplish with this relationship. This girl has had no sort of raising. She can't possibly make a good wife for you or a mother to my grandchildren. You should cut your losses now." Mary Alice said. Christine stopped in her tracks.
"I love her." Mike said.
"No, son. You love the fun she's giving you. I seriously doubt you love her." Mary Alice remarked.
"No, Mom. I love Christine." Mike insisted.
"Oh, son. She is nothing like Tiffany." Mary Alice said.
"And that is a good thing, considering that Tiffany got knocked up by my best friend and is now having their second kid. She was not what you thought, either." Mike remarked.
"Are you going to marry her?" Mary Alice asked.
"Yes. And I know you don't like her, but give her a chance. I want to spend my life with her. It would mean a lot to me if you did. And I would also like you and Dad to give us your blessing." Mike said.
"She just has no manners. She's…clumsy." Mary Alice said.
"Her mother never taught her, but she is teachable. Just be patient, Mom. And understand, I am going to marry her, so you might as well make peace with it now. I love her and she loves me." Mike said.
"But does she love you for you or because you rescued her from a horrible life? Just be sure of that before you put a ring on her finger. If she sees you as her rescuer and you do marry, it could sour pretty quickly." Mary Alice advised. Christine heard the chair being pushed back and so she ran back up the stairs and into the room she was occupying. She knew she shouldn't have been eavesdropping, but she was intrigued. And very worried. Maybe Mary Alice was right. Did she love Mike, or did she love the fact that he had rescued her? And how did she figure it out?
