A/n: Proud of myself for posting this in the early hours of 28th and not extremely last minute. Even though I'm not proud of the oneshot itself, I blame the month of February and the huge writer's block it brought with itself. The theme for this month was Valentine's but this chapter diverges from it a little bit.

Thank you to Sweet Cari and eri for the reviews on the previous chapter, hopefully the next instalment will be better than this one!

6. Late Night Lullabies

x

Mimi couldn't remember exactly when she had turned into such a light sleeper, who if once awake, would just not be able to fall back asleep no matter how hard she tried. Which is why even as it had been a few minutes since Mimi had awoken to the crying sounds echoing from the baby monitor kept on their nightstand, but she hadn't made any inclination to show that she was awake. She was hoping that her dear husband who too had been strangely still over the past few minutes would be the first one to crack, and thus in turn be the one to deal with the problem.

It had only been a week or so since they had welcomed their son into the world and the two had already begun to get into fights over who was responsible for what. Of course, she had been given the princess treatment her first few days back from the hospital with Yamato rushing to be at her beck and call while simultaneously looking after Yuki. But that attention ran it's course pretty quickly as Mimi was quick to get back on her feet and Yamato was more than willing to share the burden with her.

So it didn't come as a surprise to her when she woke to the sound of Yuki's cries that Yamato was still in bed next to her, and hadn't rushed to check in on their son yet. She pitied her husband for even assuming that he'd beat her in a battle of willpower and restraint that involved leaving the cozy warmth of blankets on a chilly February night.

"Mimi, please."

Sure enough, Yamato's pleading voice floated towards her from the other side of the bed and she grinned in triumph.

"Since you woke up first, you should be the one to check." She replied, keeping herself rooted in her warm spot.

"Oh come on, you know I have to go in to work tomorrow."

"So?"

"So I deserve a good night's sleep. I've been taking the night shift this entire week anyway, it's your turn now."

Before Mimi could find a perfect retort to his statement, the door to their bedroom creaked open, making both of them jump in surprise and sit up immediately. Peeking through the slightly ajar door was their daughter Fuyumi, looking half-asleep as she held her wolf plush close to her chest.

"I can't sleep in my room because of Yuki, can I sleep in here?"

"Of course sweetie." Mimi patted the empty space between her and Yamato and Fuyumi was quick to crawl into the blanket and settle herself between the two of them. Now all Mimi had to do was wrap her arms around her daughter and look at Yamato with her best puppy dog face and he'd be out of the bed and rushing to their son in no time.

But Fuyumi had other plans, before she could reach out for her, the three year old promptly turned her back to her mother and excitedly slithered towards her father.

"Daddy, will you sing me a song?"

Yamato finally turned to face Mimi with a victorious grin on his face and copying the same tone that she had answered in before, replied, "Of course sweetie."

Mimi groaned and began to sit up, there was no point in going against Fuyumi now that she was snuggled up to her father, it would only end up in a tantrum and with Yuki's cries already echoing across the house, the quota for crying babies was filled to the brim. She shot a disgruntled look in Yamato's direction as she removed herself from the blanket, while it was true that the past week he had been up day and night looking after their son as Mimi rested and regained her strength, the sympathy she felt for him had been distinguished by the smirk he currently wore on his face for winning the argument using her own tactics against her.

She left the bedroom as Fuyumi began to list all the songs she wanted her father to sing, a little satisfied that her daughter's request basically mirrored a 3 hour concert and Yamato would have trouble getting to sleep early if he were to abide by Fuyumi's demands. The satisfaction was only short lived as once she held Yuki in her arms, all other concerns vanished from her mind. Between changing his diapers, feeding him and rocking him until he fell asleep, Mimi didn't feel the night pass her by, and when she was finally able to put down a peaceful Yuki back into his crib, she noticed the first signs of dawn appear in the sky through the window and let out a tired sigh. She was the kind of person who, once having realised that the day had started found it difficult to get back into bed. As she walked back to her room, she was already planning the breakfast for today and trying to mentally make a list of all the chores that had been pending since she'd been in the hospital.

However, when she returned to their bedroom, the sight that greeted her irked her. Yamato and Fuyumi were snugly huddled under the blanket together in the centre of the bed, their faces wearing looks of content as their chests rose and fell almost rhythmically in unison. It seemed that she still was upset about not being able to one-up him earlier in the night and seeing him sleep so comfortably, without a care in the world, made her want to shake him awake just for a quick laugh.

Smiling to herself, Mimi quietly slipped back into the bed and settled herself so that she was facing Yamato, taking every precaution to not wake Fuyumi she stretched a hand forward, first lightly caressing his cheek, his eyelashes fluttered slightly and she stifled a giggle before twisting her fingers around his cheek and pulling it tightly. Yamato woke with a start, eyes widening as he bit his tongue to bury the scream that was on the tip of his lips, noticing Mimi shaking with silent laughter, he rolled his groggy eyes upwards.

"Mimi, I swear-"

"What about my song?"

Yamato turned to face her with a raised eyebrow, "What song?"

"Don't I get a song that'll put me to sleep?" Mimi fired back promptly, despite knowing that the chances of her falling into a peaceful slumber were thin, she did not want to grant that comfort to her husband either.

"I'll sing you one tomorrow," Yamato rubbed the spot on his cheek that she had pulled, sending a grumpy pout in her direction he added, "I promise, if you just let me go back to sleep right now, I'll sing you one tomorrow."

"Hmm, but I want to hear you sing right now." Mimi smiled at him, enjoying watching him get restless at her words, "You did it for Fuyumi."

"Jealous of your own daughter?" He scoffed, eyebrows tinged with annoyance over her pestering, "That's a new low even for you."

"I just think that it would be the fair thing to do." Mimi shrugged, she found it cute that he hadn't yet realised that the more time he spent arguing with her, the lesser he'd get to sleep, "Think of it as a late Valentine's present."

"Uh, we live in Japan, you're supposed to give me a present on Valentine's." Yamato replied, sounding a little proud of himself he then faced her with a cool smirk, "I don't remember you giving me anything last week."

Oh it was so easy to lead him into her traps, so many years spent together and Yamato still could never figure out when she was manipulating him. She met his eyes as she pushed a few lose strands of hair behind her ear and smiled earnestly at him.

"Well I'm sorry I didn't prepare a Valentine's present for you Yamato kun, since I was so busy giving birth to your son."

She watched in delight as his face fell in defeat, there wasn't anything he could say to defend himself against a statement like that after all, so Mimi let out a loud laugh, which thankfully did not bother Fuyumi, and stretched her arms above her head, now she could get up with a clean conscience and get started with her day. Or that's what she had planned but as she readied herself to leave the bed, Yamato's sweet voice floated into her ears and made her halt. She turned to find him settled down next to Fuyumi again, singing with his eyes closed. Even with all her teasing and pestering, Mimi hadn't actually meant for him to sing to her, she knew he was exhausted and would have a long day at work ahead of him, all she had wanted was to maintain her position as the top dog between the two of them.

And yet she couldn't find the words to tell him to stop.

As his soothing voice filled the whole room, Mimi found herself crawling back under the blanket and shifting closer to him. Even though she knew that sleep wouldn't come so easily to her, his voice, which was as sweet as honey, tempted her with such an intensity that she couldn't help but allow herself to drown in it. With every note that Yamato sang, she felt herself getting tangled up in his spell, felt her eyes get droopy, felt the numbers on the digital clock kept on their bedside table starting to blur. Slowly and steadily, the list of chores and the thought of starting the day early disappeared from her mind as her eyes fluttered shut and she gave into the satisfying sensation of being surrounded by nothing but her husband's melodic voice.

It was true that lately Mimi found it difficult to fall asleep once interrupted, unless of course Yamato was the one singing her a good night lullaby.

A/n:Technically, Yuki was born on February 12th so Mimi was just recovering in the hospital on Valentine's. The theme for the next chapter might skip a little bit forward in time, so it might not be a fully Mimato chapter, but I'll write something else in March for these two to make up for that.

Thank you for reading, until next month!
