The blinding light gradually gave way to words swirling around like a tornado. Then everything calmed, and Kelsey discovered herself in the first story of her Avatar "Shards Universe" series.
Blinking her eyes, she gasped how it looked exactly like she envisioned it. Ilah's estate resembles an oriental version of Downton Abbey! Even the plantation itself looked like a larger-scale version of the one from "Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island!"
She quickly glanced down at her outfit. As the letter expressed, her attire had converted into fashion from this world. Kelsey ordinarily wore pants. However, she did own two tanktop dresses. Her current ensemble looked like a stunning pink version of one of those dresses, only with a long-sleeved tunic under it and a silk sash in a pale shade of yellow.
Thank god some people in this world did wear glasses. Also, she sported a headdress to conceal her short blond hair. Because literally, no one in the Avatar world had blond hair!
She unexpectedly felt a bit dizzy, swaying a bit. Then, a moment later, the sensation died. Other then a slight headache, a side-effect of being granted the knowledge of this world, she was fine.
She glanced down at her wrist, where a gold charm bracelet magically materialized. The charms were a book with a keyhole in it. A key charm resided next to it. So far, the charm didn't illuminate to indicate it was time to leave.
Taking a deep breath, she strolled in through the back entrance. She'd watched Downton Abbey with her mother a zillion times. So consequently, other then the oriental architecture and décor?
It was the exact layout of the Abbey itself. Which meant she'd be reaching the servant's dining room shortly. But, first, she heard the same noise and bits of dialogue again from her mother's favorite show. Then, glancing inside, she witnessed several servants running around.
The one that caught her eye was a young albino woman in the corner. The person with albinism had removed her headdress for a moment to re-braid her white hair. Once the plait was twisted back into a bun, she quickly put back on her hat while grabbing tiny sunglasses for her eyes.
Kelsey couldn't help but smile. She'd based Calypso on Anna Bates since it made it easier to write the relationship between Calypso and Ilah by basing it on Anna and Mary's. But, lost in thought, she didn't realize that Calypso had run into her until too late. "Oh, I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to run into you!" she apologized as she helped her up.
"No harm done. I shouldn't have been daydreaming anyway."
"I've not seen you before. Given your sash color, I'm assuming your the replacement housemaid the Lord requested. Seeing how we just had one quit last week."
"Yes, that would be me," Kelsey replied as the enchantment told her to say that.
"Well, considering how everyone else is so occupied? I'll gladly teach you the ropes. However, I do have to ask if you've any experience to fall back on?"
"The only work I've ever done was cleaning. Therefore, it shouldn't be too challenging to help clean the house or organize things."
"Okay, well, follow me then. Oh, what's your name, by the way?"
"Kelsey."
"Funny name, but most people make fun of my own. So coming along. You can help me make up Lady Ilah's room."
Nodding, she followed her to Lady Ilah's room, which had again been set up as an Asian-style of Lady Mary's room. She quickly got to work with making the bed before organizing the wardrobes.
Luckily as this was the Fire Nation? There wasn't any reason to light a fireplace, so she was spared that. Instead, she minded her own business until Lady Ilah herself strolled gracefully into the room.
Again, the young writer's breath was stolen by seeing the character materialize before her. Seeing how Ilah's name was mentioned in a throwaway line and no picture in the show?
For these stories? She'd gotten decided what Ilah looked like and her personality type. It pleased her to see she looked precisely like she'd been drawn in one fanart request.
Ilah was a stunning, tall, elegant young woman. Her ebony hair is styled with multiple odangos and braids. The shade of her dress was as red as autumn leaves. Overall a pretty stylish and unique young woman before her. She paused for a moment to look her over. "Calypso?"
"Yes, My Lady?"
"Are you going to introduce me to the new girl or not?" she questioned courteously.
"Oh, sorry, My Lady. This is Kelsey. She's the replacement maid employed to replace the one that quit last week. I'm showing her the ropes."
"That's very kind of you, Calypso. I'm delighted to meet you, Kelsey. If there is anything you need, don't hesitate to ask."
"Thank you, Lady Ilah. Do you wish me to step out now?"
"No, you can finish in here first. Then Calypso can show you where the laundry room is to drop it off. After that, you can room with her until we've got the old housemaid's room to remodel."
"Thank you again, Lady Ilah," as she quickly went back to tidying up the room. She half-listened as Ilah and Calypso discussed the upcoming Phoenix Season. The events of Downton Abbey have inspired the Phoenix Season. Specifically when the Crawlys went to London for the Season. Her mom clarified it was more or less a debutante ball.
Ilah then dismissed them as she bid them goodnight. Calypso smiled while leading the young writer to her new 'room.' The servant's rooms were slightly more extensive and more stylish then the ones on Downton Abbey.
She assumed it was due to the cultural difference, or it was simply she imagined them a bit more lavish. Thankfully, there was a dressing screen to change behind. Given the young writer was highly self-conscious of her body. She then reappeared wearing a simple tunic to sleep in. "Bathroom down the hall and to the left. Breakfast is half-hour after sunrise. Is there anything else you need to know?"
"Well," a bit embarrassed, "I don't like tea. I know that's a shock to hear. Seeing how everyone drinks it. However, it smells and tastes terrible to me. Do you perhaps have anything other then tea to drink? I don't want to complain, but also I want to be able to keep myself hydrated."
"Don't worry about the tea. Surprisingly you are not the only one who doesn't have a taste for it. However, we have juice and water for those not fond of tea. So don't fret about that."
"Okay, I guess its sweet dreams then."
"You look like your a bit anxious. Is there a reason?" the lady's maid questioned.
"Oh, I suffer from anxiety. I get anxious quite easily, and I'd like to be more social? But, unfortunately, I do get also overwhelmed easily. At least, if I don't have someone familiar helping me out."
"Well, stick close to me, and everything should be fine. I've put up with a lot of BS from the other household staff. I've been bullied and mocked simply because I was different. I know how it is to get anxious. I remember how anxious I felt when I was first taken on myself."
"Really? When with that? Forgive me, but you don't look very old. I mean, some people mistake me for a teenager or early twenties. However, I'm thirty-four."
"I can see why that adds to your anxiety. Because you look and sound younger, it must be hard to be taken seriously. If people think your that much younger."
"Yes, frequently, I've felt more like a child and less like an adult. Based on how young I look and sound. Some people wish they could look young forever. I'd preferred to be seen as a grown woman."
"Well, for your question regarding my age? Which I assure you I'm not offended. I'm only a few months younger then Lady Ilah. Lady Ilah has called me her honorary sister. She found me living on the streets after my family had cast me out for my condition. She took me in and cleaned my wounds before firmly informing her father that I would be her Lady's Maid. She wouldn't have it any other way."
"I wish I had more friends like that myself. But, unfortunately, my relationship with my family is strained at best. Also, I grew up bullied and friendless myself."
"Well, you and I can watch out for each other. For now, let us turn in for the night."
Then dousing the candles, the pair fell asleep. Thankfully while in the story's world, the writer didn't require her medications to function. Thank god for magic. The following week passed with the same routine. She'd always been an early riser. So she didn't have a problem with that. It took a while to get used to the food, but she managed.
Calypso protected her from the bullies among the staff. She was slowly learning more about the world within her stories. Eventually, Lady Ilah requested her to come along to the capital.
Her reasoning she wasn't about to leave the new girl alone to suffer at the hands of the senior staff. Also, Calypso requested it. Seeing the capital in real life was far different then watching the animated version.
She secretly followed Ilah to the gardens, where she met Azulon the first time. However, he gave her the name of his lookalike valet. Soon afterward, this story came to an end.
However, just as she hoped, another book charm was added to the bracelet. Meaning she could go through the series before returning to the real world. Smiling, she waited to move on to the next story and what awaited her.
