Chapter 5 - She's The Pretty One
It had been a frustrating week. The goblins had been less than helpful (not even willing to give up a name in connection to the accounts), also Harry hadn't managed to spot anything on the Guldridge Estate's CCTV footage, leaving him without a lead.
Compounding his misery was the thought that an evil smarmy git like Malfoy could walk free. He hadn't been able to get their talk out of his head, it was infuriating that a family who actually supported the dark arts is now galivanting around in public. Leaving Harry questioning whether he should have left the wizarding world in the first place, he could have proved their loyalty to Voldemort, he had the scars as evidence.
Huffing in aggravation he settled into the comfy settee in the living room and flicked on the television. He flicked through the channels until he found what he was looking for, highlights of the fifth Ashes test match between England and Australia.
Growing up Harry had taken to many muggle sports in a way that normal magical children hadn't. Quidditch was great, fast, exciting, yet there was still something about muggle sports that appealed to him, particularly cricket.
'Has it started yet?' Asked Kreacher as he walked in from the hallway, jumping onto the settee next to Harry.
'No, the players have just come out of the pavilion.'
'Do you think they have a chance?'
Harry quirked an eyebrow. 'Of winning?'
'Of making the fourth day.'
Harry snorted. 'Probably not, especially if Warne gets his teeth into them.'
The highlights of the first session were just ending when a bright silver fox landed in front of the television. It opened its mouth to speak. 'Dora's in St Mungos.' The message rang clearly across the room in the voice of Andromeda Tonks.
Harry didn't hesitate, he jumped to his feet and hurriedly made his way to the floo in the kitchen. He was reaching for the floor powder when there was a croak from behind him. 'Don't forget your contacts, and cover your scar.'
'Thanks Kreacher,' said Harry as he diverted to the draw he kept the contacts in. He then sprinted up the stairs to the bathroom and applied the skin blemisher to his forehead. Happy with his work he went back down to the kitchen and prepared to leave. 'I'll let you know how she is once I know.' He told Kreacher before dropping the floo powder into the fire shouting 'ST MUNGOS!'
He stumbled out of the floo on the other end, luckily it was late so there was no queue in front of the welcome witch. 'I'm here to see Nymphadora Tonks, I think she has just been submitted.' He just about kept the panic from his voice.
'She's currently in surgery. You may wait in the 2nd floor waiting room.'
'Surgery, what's happened?'
'I'm sorry sir I can't say.' She said apologetically.
'Fine, thanks.' He huffed as he rushed off to the stairs. He took them two at a time almost, knocking over a nurse as he thundered past the 1st floor.
'Watch it!' She shouted at his retreating form. Ignoring the nurse, he rushed to the waiting room and threw the door open. He was surprised to find it predominantly filled with red heads, with a few exceptions, the turquoise haired boy being one of them.
'Uncle Harry!' He exclaimed running over, Harry stooped down and crushed the boy to him, who immediately began to cry.
'Shh, shh it's OK Teddy.' He soothed. 'Are you hurt?'
'N-no.' Teddy sniffed 'Mom was, badly. She w-wasn't awake when we got here.'
Harry pulled back slightly to look at him, Teddy's eyes were red and his face pale. As Harry pulled away, Teddy looked down at the floor. 'Hey look at me.' Harry encouraged, when Teddy didn't respond, Harry tipped his chin up for him. 'She's going to be alright, your mom's tough. Yeah?'
'Y-yeah.' He agreed shakily.
Harry smiled and was rewarded with a small, watery one from Teddy. Looking over his head he noticed Andromeda had come to stand near them. She too had been crying although it looked like she had started to calm down some.
'Hey Andy.' He greeted standing to hug the elderly witch.
She clung to him almost has tightly as Teddy did. 'Thanks for coming.' She whispered.
'Nowhere else I'd be.'
'I know.'
'What happened? Is there anyone else hurt?'
It was the red-haired witch from the meeting he walked in on that answered. 'We were attacked at our family home. We were in the kitchen eating and having a few drinks when a thunderstorm suddenly started.'
'A thunderstorm?' Interrupted Harry. 'The weather's been calm.'
'I know.' She said hugging herself 'The storm was unnatural, Tonks was at the door when it exploded. She was impaled on some of the debris.' She visibly shuddered at the thought. 'It was horrible, they had somehow taken down the wards and they were apparating all around the house.
'The windows imploded and there were spells flying all around us. Instead of fighting back, we just apparated here with Tonks, she was barely breathing when we got here. Luckily no one else was badly injured.'
Harry noticed she was leaning slightly, favouring her righthand side. 'Have you got your leg checked out yet?'
She stiffened slightly. 'I'm fine.'
'Really?' asked Harry sarcastically, she nodded stubbornly. 'Try standing on your left leg.' She glared at him.
'Do it Ginny.' Said Bill, from the side of the room.
'No.'
'You're already in a hospital dear.' Said an older woman with grey strands in her red hair. She was obviously the mother of the brood. 'Just get checked out.'
'I'm fine!' She snapped defiantly. 'Look.' Ginny stood on her left and held it for all of two seconds before she wobbled, luckily Bill was close enough to catch her.
'You're not fine, come on.'
'Oh ok.' She relented. 'Did you have to bring this up?' She snapped at Harry as she was led out of the door, Harry sheepishly averted his gaze from hers.
Andy chuckled, 'Don't mind her Harry, she's just as stubborn about getting healed properly as you are. Just so you know these are some of mine and Dora's friends, I'm not sure you would have met any of them.'
Harry grimaced 'Not officially, I did walk in on a meeting Tonks was having with a few of them a couple of weeks ago. Sorry about that.' He muttered to the room.
'Apparently you made quite the introduction.' Andy said wryly. 'Anyway, these are the Weasleys, Arthur, Molly, Fred, George, Ron and Hermione, Ron's girlfriend.' She pointed to each of them in turn. 'The two who have just left are Bill and Ginny, I hope you can tell the difference.'
'Ginny's the pretty one.' Clarified Teddy. Once he realised he had spoken out loud, he went beat red and hid behind the legs of Andromeda.
Harry stooped down, grinning like a Cheshire cat. 'Is that so, does she know you think she's pretty?' Teddy covered his head in his hands. 'Come on Ted, don't go all shy now.' He teased.
'Don't worry Teddy-' Said Fred or George, Harry really couldn't tell which one. When Andromeda had pointed them out, he assumed she either got it wrong or was lucky with her guess.
'When everything's all said and done-' Said the other.
'You are a lot better-'
'looking-'
'Smelling-'
'and a lot more intelligent-'
'Than the dungheads she usually dates.' They finally chorused together.
'Ouch.' Said Harry rubbing the back of his head, 'Do you two always talk like that?'
'Yeah they do.' Said Ron, the younger sibling. 'It takes for bloody ever.'
'Language Ron.' Chastised Hermione. Ron just rolled his eyes.
It was at that point that a healer walked into the waiting room. 'Family of Nymphadora Tonks?'
They all looked around expectantly. 'You can go in and see her now, ward 204, please two at a time. She is sleeping so try not to wake her up.'
'We won't, thank you.' Said Andy gratefully.
The healer smiled and left. 'Andy why don't you and Teddy go in first then the rest of us will take a turn.' Said Harry.
'Sure, come on sweetheart.' She said taking Teddy's hand and leaving the room.
Once they were gone, Harry turned his attention to an argument between the two elder Weasleys.
'Arthur, we need to find somewhere to stay. I don't like the idea of splitting up after the attack.' Whispered Molly.
'We don't have choice. There's enough room between Bill's place and the flat above the shop for all of us until we can make sure the Burrow is safe.' Arthur tried to reason.
'No Arthur, we need to stick together. Look at what happened to Kingsley, they didn't just attack his home, they attacked the rest of his family too.'
'Well what else can we do?' Exasperated Arthur.
Harry felt bad for them, he knew what it was like to live in fear of being attacked at home during the war. From the sounds of it they had been targeted, so even if the other places they mentioned hadn't been attacked, they were likely to be if someone wanted them dead. 'There's plenty of rooms at Grimmauld Place for you all.'
Molly and Arthur looked at each other hesitantly. 'Go on' urged Ron 'We need somewhere to go.'
'I don't know, we don't want to intrude.' Arthur said hesitantly.
'You wouldn't be intruding Mr Weasley. Please, you can stay as long as you like, at least until I can take a look at your home.'
'Why do you want to take a look there for?' Asked Molly.
Harry smiled grimly 'First off to make sure they haven't left any traps for you. Secondly to see if they've left any clues as to who they are and what they were doing there.'
'Why do you care about that?' Asked Ron confused. 'You're not an Auror.'
'Maybe not but these bastards have just put my sister in the hospital. I'm going after them.' He said, daring anyone to contradict him.
'We'll help.' Said Ginny, leaning on the doorway. Harry hadn't noticed her come back.
'I work best alone.' Growled Harry.
'Tough I'm helping.' She responded dismissively. 'Andy wants to see you, we can have our argument tomorrow.'
Harry rolled his eyes 'Kreacher.' With a crack the old house elf appeared before him, worry etched on his face.
'Yes Evans?'
'Can you do me a favour and set up the guest bedrooms please?'
'Of course, how's Tonks?'
'She's sleeping, she should be ok.'
Kreacher relaxed. 'That's good news, I'll prepare the bedrooms now.'
'Thanks Kreacher I owe you one.' With that the house elf disappeared with another loud crack. After Kreacher had left Harry made his way out of the waiting room to the ward Tonks was on.
When he got there, he wasn't all that surprised to see Bill gathered around the bed with Andy and Teddy. Prominent worry lines etched his forehead whilst his thumb rubbed circles on the back of Tonks' hand.
Teddy had fallen asleep sitting on his chair with his head on the bed, Harry smiled when he heard him snoring softly.
Noticing him, Andy made her way from the bedside to the entrance of the ward and led Harry back into the corridor.
'I need to get Teddy out of here. He can't sleep like that all night.' She whispered.
'OK, do you want to take Teddy and I'll stay here with Tonks or vice versa?' He asked gently.
'Do you mind staying?'
'No, take Teddy to Grimmauld Place, the Weasleys are going there too. Kreacher's sorting out rooms for you all.'
'Thanks Harry.' She looked up at the ceiling and huffed audibly 'I can't believe this is happening again.'
'What's happening again?'
'The attacks.' She sniffed. 'It's like going back ten years.'
'I didn't realise it had gotten that bad.' He admitted.
'It's not quite as bad yet, there have only been a few attacks. Their targeting Dumbledore's old supporters. I'm worried, the Ministry are covering it all up and no one really knows what's going on.'
'It'll be OK, the Aurors will catch up to them.'
Andy snorted 'There are only a handful of Aurors who are actually trying. The others are still looking for Harry Potter.'
'Maybe they should find him.' He sighed.
She wrapped him up in a motherly hug. 'No, they shouldn't, he's one of the few that can stop what's going on.'
'What if he can't anymore?'
Andy pulled back and cupped his cheek. 'He can. He just needs a reason. Come on, I need to get Teddy out of here.'
Walking back into the ward, Harry noticed Bill still hadn't let go of Tonks' hand. Andy gently woke Teddy up. 'wazzapnin' he mumbled sleepily.
Smiling, Andy lifted him to his feet 'We're going to stay at uncle Harry's.'
'No I wanna stay.' He argued.
'Go and get some rest Teddy, you can come back in the morning.' Harry assured him.
'You staying?'
'Yeah I'll stay.'
'K.' He stumbled over to Harry who hugged him tightly.
'Your mom's going to be Ok.'
'I know.'
Harry loosed him and suddenly poked Teddy in the chest. 'What's that on your shirt?' He asked seriously. Teddy looked down and Harry flicked him on the nose. 'Gotcha.'
Teddy laughed reluctantly. 'Gerroff.'
'Go on I'll see you in the morning. See you Andy.'
'Yeah see you tomorrow.' She said pulling Teddy towards the door.
'Bye Uncle Harry, Bye Bill.' Said Teddy on his way out.
Sighing, Harry moved to stand up again and for the first time looked at Tonks' sleeping form on the bed. She looked oddly peaceful despite her pale face, what caught his attention though was that her hair had returned to its natural mousy colour, he couldn't remember the last time he had seen it like that.
He sat down heavily in the vacant chair opposite Bill. 'It's a shame she's not this peaceful when she's awake.'
Bill chuckled 'Don't let her catch you saying that.'
