I had fallen asleep almost immediately as I laid down on the bed I would be sleeping in for the next four years. And I didn't dream. I had a peaceful night as my body got used to the Oklahoma time. I woke up to the sound of pop music playing and a voice humming along. I sat up and stretched and heard the music get turned down. I looked over and saw that Damien was dressed and sitting on top of his bed with a sketchbook. He gave a small smile to me, and I smiled back.
"I didn't wake you did I?" Damien asked, and I shook my head, moving to get out of bed. "Oh, good. It's still early for a weekend, and you just moved from the east coast…."
"Don't worry about it," I said, stretching as I got out of bed. "I'm going to take a shower if that's alright?"
"Go for it; I already got ready for the day," Damien explained and went back to sketching as I grabbed some clothes that I wore every day before I got Marked.
Then it hit me that I had found a new normal as I started my "morning" routine. I smiled as I heard Damien turn up the radio, so I took my time getting ready. It was the weekend, Sunday should be exact, so I felt like I could give myself some TLC. I would have to memorize a new class schedule- get to know my new mentor. Yeah, I deserved to have a 30-minute hot shower while Hollaback Girl and whatever top 40 songs played next.
Those 30 minutes were fabulous. I felt refreshed and changed quickly and saw that Damien had put away his sketchbook and was looking under his bed. I noticed that the cat who had made his spot on my bed before I moved in was nowhere in the room. I then looked under my bed, and as if on cue, that same cat ran from under my bed onto Damien's back then his bed.
"Cammy! That's where you went!" Damien exclaimed and then shook his head. "Oh, you're out of the bathroom," Damien said, picking up Cammy the cat and looking at me. "The Twins, Shaunee and Erin, planed a Sunday movie marathon; I know you're still settling in, so I understand if you wouldn't like to join-"
I decided to cut Damien off by smiling and answering his long-winded question. "I'd love to; the last time I had a movie marathon was a week before I was Marked. My ex-girlfriend was visiting from Boston, so we watched whatever was playing on ABC that day."
"Ex-girlfriend?" Damien asked, significantly more relaxed around me.
"Yeah, ex-girlfriend as of…." I checked the clock on my nightstand to see that it read 9 pm. "16 hours ago? I broke up with her as I was on the plane here. That might seem weird, but there wasn't a right time for that conversation."
Damien gave me a sympathetic look, "I'm sorry, breakups are always hard."
I shrugged and started to rummage around in my bag before looking at the time. "Yeah, I do need to make a call real quick." I couldn't help but smile at the confused look Damien gave me as I held the gold drachma and light that Antipoe gave me. "You'll get a kick out of this. Here sit next to me."
I then set the light on the nightstand, and Damien moved over and watched as I called Iris to send a message to my mom. Then the scene changed from a rainbow to my Mom and Paul sitting together on the couch while my mom had her red pen out making notes on her manuscript she started. I looked over to see Damien had the most prominent look of astonishment. I chuckled then looked back at the scene.
"Isn't it a bit late to be doing work?" I said, which caused both my mom and Paul to look up.
"Percy!" My mom said, immediately sitting up putting her editing away. "How was your flight? Are you okay? Do you need anything?"
"Sally, let the boy answer," Paul said, chuckling and causing my mom to blush.
"It's alright," I said, chuckling. "My flight was okay; it felt weird to be able to do something I wasn't able to do before. I'm great! I have a roommate," I then moved over and motioned to Damien to come to sit a bit closer. "This is Damien."
"Nice to meet you, dear." My mom said with the sweetest look. "It was a surprise to learn that the Vampyres knew about the godly side of the world."
"I was surprised to know it excited," Damien admitted, and I couldn't help but laugh.
"Yeah," I said, trying to stop my laugher. "So was I. Seeing your best friend had goat legs will surprise you."
"Percy," Paul's voice caught my attention. He wore a concerned look. "Annabeth gave us a call. Are you okay?"
I nodded and a lump formed in my throat. "I am, well." I shook my head. "Honestly, I don't know what I'm feeling. I just know that I made the right decision. It wouldn't work out no matter what outcome ended it."
"We are here for you," My mom said softly, and I swore I could feel her hand on my cheek. "Sadly, you were right. It is late for us. I'm going to send you a care package the first thing in the morning."
"Sleep well," I said and turned off the light.
I hadn't realized just how far away I was from my mom till the words care package came out of her mouth. They weren't going to make it for the family day any time soon. I quickly stood up, clearing my throat, blinking away tears I felt forming. "So, movie marathon, right?"
Damien nodded and stood up, a look of curiosity on his face. I could tell that he had some questions for me. I mean, who wouldn't? Yet, instead of asking me any of them, he just led me to the standard room. In which he explained how things worked here in Tulsa. Where the classes are located and things like that. He also explained why he told me he was gay as soon as Neferet left. I now had a "Thor" to add to my shit list. The funniest thing is that Damien could explain it all to me all before we got in the student standard room. We sat down, and Damien explained how I had to update my parents on how I was before they headed out. They all smiled understanding, and Stevie Rae explained how they decided to start with "Rent" then go from there. The movie marathon went smoothly, and by smoothly, I mean we didn't watch the movies. Instead, I got to know everyone. For instance, I found out that Shaunee and Erin have the nickname "The Twins" because of the strange coincidences that led to them becoming best friends. I also found out that Stevie Rae was expecting a New roommate, who was now in the infirmary because of a headwound. Not to an excellent start to the life at the House of Night. I sadly also discovered why Damien and I had walked upon the three girls shit-talking a fledgling named Aphrodite LaFont.
We were in the middle of watching "Hitch" when she walked up to us. I first noticed Erin's glare when she was about to comment. It caused me to turn around, and I saw Aphrodite walking up with two other girls at her back. She locked eyes with me and smiled. She looked at the others, and something flashed across her face.
"Percy Blofis," She said, her words having a fake positive ring to them. "Just the fledgling I wanted to see. Before I say anything, I think you should know that both Neferet and Professor Nolan are 100% for this. I just want to personally invite you to the Dark Daughters and Son's full moon ritual tomorrow. It will be right after the school's." She smiled at me before turning her nose at the others and leaving.
I blinked, wondering what it was all about; the only thing I understood was that Aphrodite was living up to her name in the worst way. I turned around and saw the daggers everyone was throwing back at everyone.
"What a Bitch!" Stevie Rae said, and the Twins nodded in agreement. I turned to them, surprised that they used that word. Then again, they weren't the ones that helped save Artemis from Atlas.
"She is fake," I commented, "Right?"
"Yes," Damien answered and looked at him. He looked sorry for me. "Looks like you'll have to deal with her fakeness."
"What do you-" Then it hit me. Nolan and Neferet both signed off on inviting me to the Dark Daughters and Sons Ritual. "Shit, I have to go."
"You figured that out fast," Stevie Rae commented. "I wouldn't have been able to do that; I would have been too intimidated."
I chuckled a bit at Stevie Rae, then shugged a bit. "Yeah, I guess that's what always being in Danger sense you were 12 will do to yah. Mean Girls don't phase me."
"Okay," Shaunee said, amusement in her voice. "Now, you can't just throw out a comment like that."
"Yeah!" Erin chimed in. "Explain yourself."
So I did. I explained how I discovered I was a demigod to the war I had fought in months before. I also found out that the Vamps knew about the chaos around the empire state building. They were super hush-hush about it, but they still discussed it. Worried it might spread around the US. Luckily I chose to stop it, not spread it. I explained to them the prophecy and the curse of Achilles. Which made me wonder if becoming a fledgling washed of the curse or if I still had it. In any case, my new friends promised to protect my left shoulder from attacks. I started to feel at home like I did when I was with my mom and Paul or at Camp.
After my new friends were done probing me for information, Damien and I headed back to our dorm to get ready for dinner. We joked around together as we both changed into our uniforms. I realized that Damien and I have a similar style. I smiled to myself, buttoning my shirt and placing a riptide in my shirt. I sat down on my bed and rolled up my sleeves to my elbows, and noticed that Damien was looking at me; then, he looked away with a slight blush. I couldn't help but smile a little bit and look at what Damien was wearing. It was almost identical to what I was wearing. It still had his flair. He put on a tweed jacket over his button-down,, not looking at me entirely. I didn't know what to say to make him feel more comfortable around me. So I got up walking over to the desk at the front of the room, and found my new schedule.
1st hour - 8 pm - Vampyre Sociology 101 - Rm. 215 - Prof. Neferet
2nd hour - 9 pm - Drama 101 - Performing Arts Center - Prof. Nolan
3rd hour - 10pm - Lit 101 - Rm. 214 - Prof. Penthesilea
4th hour - 11 pm - Fencing - Gymnasium - Prof. Lankford
LUNCH BREAK
5th hour - 1 am - Spanish 101 - Rm 216 - Prof. Gary
6th hour - 2 am - Equestrian Studies - Field House - Prof. Lenobia
Lucky for me, my schedule wasn't too much different from the one I had in New York. I would have to get used to the new teachers, and Equestrian Studies was new. I moved my schedule into my bag, humming to myself, then turned around to see that Damien was looking at me. He was rubbing his neck. I smiled at him and then sat down again.
"I don't care that you were watching me get ready," I said simply, and Damien blushed again, going to say something. "Annabeth once told me I could make anything look good if you know what I mean. I get it."
"I just don't want to make you feel uncomfortable," Damien said in a serious tone. "My previous roommate was so uncomfortable that he became hateful and Neferet had to move me into my own room. I'm surprised you were made my roommate."
"Damien," I said looking at him in the eyes. "I'm not uncomfortable. You can't make me uncomfortable unless you do anything other then check me out without my consent." Damien relaxed a bit and nodded looking a bit unsure and started to pet Cammy. "Let's go get some dinner, I'm starving."
Damien stood up and I followed him out of the room humming to myself. I checked the wristwatch Tyson made for me and saw that it was six am. Even though I have been marked for almost a month I couldn't help but think about what my family and friends would be up too at any moment. My mom and Paul were probably having coffee on the couch watching the Today show, Paul doing his best to savor the moment with my mom before he has to head out to work. As I thought of home I smiled and realized that Damien and I had reached the Dinning Hall. I nudged Damien lightly and he cracked a smile before walking in.
"Looks like it's spaghetti night," Damien said as we got into line. "Always nice to have something familiar."
"Couldn't agree more," I said as I grabbed some spaghetti and garlic bread. "So, Stevie Rae's roommate got here today correct? That's what we heard?"
"Yeah," Damien nodded walking over to a table. "I hope she's okay, that's a rough sign to be in the infirmary on the first day."
"You couldn't be more right," Erin said smiling as she sat down with us.
"Where is Shaunee?" Damien asked and Erin rolled her eyes.
"She decided to take some RnR but didn't wake up in time and I'm not her mama." Erin explained and I couldn't help but chuckle.
Damien and Erin started to talk as I ate and looked around seeing Stevie Rae talking with another girl. I watched as they turned and couldn't help but noticed the filled in crescent moon. Different, and different means that life was going to get way more interesting. I moved my attention back to Damien and Erin and almost choked on my spaghetti.
"You can not disagree that Percy is fine!" Erin said very animatedly and I looked over and saw Damien was struggling trying to not blush.
"It's not that I don't agree," Damien said and looked over at me and then looked back at Erin quickly. "We'll continue this conversation later, Stevie Rae and her roommate are walking over."
"Hey, y'all." Stevie Rae said sitting down and I smiled at her. "Meet my roommate, Zoey Redbird. Zoey, this is Erin Bates." Erin waved at Zoey but her eye contact was with Zoey's mark. "She's the "pretty one" but shes also super funny, smart, and has more shoes then anyone else that I know."
"Hi," Erin said in a shy voice that I havn't heard from her. Zoey smiled and waved by looking a bit awkward as she sat down.
"And this is one of the token guys of our group, Damien Maslin." Stevie Rae said genternig to Damien and I couldn't help but chuckle. "But he's gay, so I don't think he actually counts as a guy."
"Actually," Damien said speaking up and I noticed the amused look on his face. "Actually, since I'm gay I think I should count for two guys instead of one. I mean, with me you get the male point of view and you don't have to worry about me wanting to touch your boobies."
"Huh," Stevie Rae said and then smiled. "Never thought about it like that before." She then pointed to me and I smiled at Zoey. "This is the other token guy, and the newest addition the group besides you, Percy Blofis."
"Nice to meet you Zoey," I said watching her relax a bit.
"It really is nice to meet you." Damien said and I saw Stevie Rae narrow her eyes. "Stevie Ray's been driving everyone of us crazy wondering what'd you'd be like."
"If you'd be one of those kids who smell bad and thinking being a vampyre means seeing who can be the biggest loser." Erin interjected and I decided to speak up.
"Or you know," I said looking around and finding Aphrodite and the two other girls and then pointed twords them. "Decided to become a mean girl."
"You mean Aphrodite?" Zoey asked following my gester the table to our left.
"Or her stuck-up flock of sycophants." Damien commented and I looked at him a bit confused.
"You'll get use to Damien's vocabulary obsession." Stevie Rae started to explain. "Thankfully this is not a new word so some of us actuallyknow what he's talking about without having to beg him for a translation." She then smiled and looked at Zoey. "Sycophant- a servile flatterer," She twanged smiling.
"Whatever," Erin said getting another bite ready. "They make me want to retch."
"They?" Zoey asked and I relized I could answer something for her.
"The Dark Daughters," I said then titled my head. "Think of them like a sorority mixed with a High School Honors Society."
"They are a sorority of Hangs from Hell that's for sure." Erin said with a venomous tone.
"Hey y'all, I don't think we should prejudice Zoey against them," Stevie Rae said and gave me a pointed look. "She might get along with them."
"Fuck that," Erin said rolling her eyes and looking to Stevie Rae. "They are hags from hell."
"Watch out Er-Bear," Damien said with amusement in his voice. "You have to eat with that mouth."
Then out of no where I felt a stong presence approaching us and I looked over to see a very annoyed Shaunee approach the table with her food. Erin was going to get told off. I smiled when Shaunnee locked eyes with me and looked to the rest of the group. I gave Erin a silent warning, she gave me an amused look back.
"Okay, please! Just please. Did nobody," Shaunnee said sitting down next to Erin giving a pointed look. "Think to bother to wake me the hell up and tell me that we were going to dinner?"
"I do believe I'm your roommate, not your mamma," Erin said echoing her earlier statement.
"Do not make me cut that Jessica Simpson look-alike blond hair of yours in the middle of the night," Shaunnee said looking directly at Erin in a playful fierce way.
"Actually," Damien said with a mischievous grin. "The consuetudinary way to phrase that would be 'Do not make me cut that Jessica Simpson look-alike blond hair of yours in the middle of the day.' Technically day is night for us and so night would be day. Time is reversed here."
Shaunee narrowed her eyes at Damien which reminded me of Clarisse whenever Annabeth decided to one up her in the strategy department. "Damien, you are getting on my damn last nerve with that vocab shit."
"Shaunee," Stevie Rae broke in causing Shaunnee to look at her confused. "My roommate finally got here. This is Zoey Redbird. Zoey this is Erin's roommate, Shaunee Cole."
"Hi," Zoey said covering her mouth which told me she had a mouthful of food.
"So," Shaunee said with a smile looking at Zoey. "Zoey, what's up with your Mark being colored in? You're a fledgling still arn't you?" I gave Shaunee a look and I relized everyone else did the same thing. "What? Do not pretend y'all were not wondering the same thing."
"I wont pretend I wasn't," I answered before the annoyed Stevie Rae could. "But, I have been the one everyone gauked at more then enough times to know Zoey probably didn't want to be questioned about it by people she just met."
Everyone went quiet and I gave Zoey a wink as looked at me. She then put her fork down and smiled. "No it's okay." She answered and I went to my food smiling. "I totally get it. I am still a fledgling, and I don't think I'm different from any or you. If I'm honest I'm just as confused as the rest of you about why my Mark is filled in. I mean, I've come up with a theory it might have something to do with my headwound and the healing process. But that's just a theory."
"Huh," Shaunee said then got a disappointed look. "Thought it was going to be something a bit more gospipy."
Zoey looked at her food and muttered an apology. Erin nudged Shaunnee and said outload. "Careful Twin, you're starting to sound like you should sit over there." She said tilting her head over to the Dark Daughters table.
Shaunee's face twisted to disgust. "I wouldn't be caught undead with those bitches."
"You're confusing the crap outta Zoey," Stevie Rae commented and some of us chuckled as Damien sat up straighter.
"I'll explain, proving once again how valuable I am to this group, penis or no penis." Damien said then looked at me and smiled.
"I really wish you wouldn't use the P-Word," Stevie Rae muttered and Erin smiled.
"I like it." She chimed and messed with her food. "If everyone called things what they are we'd all be a lot less confused. For instance, you know when I have to go to the bathroom I state the obvious- I have urine that needs to come out my urethra. Simple. Easy. Clear."
"Discussing. Gross. Crude," Stevire Rae said pointedly.
"Not allowed at a summer camp for a bunch of demigods," I mettered under my breath and the others started to laugh a bit.
"I'm with you," Shaunee said to Erin. "I mean, if we talked plainly about things like urination and menstration and such, life would be so much simpler."
"Okay, enough with the urination and menstaration talk." Damien said and I chuckled a bit. "First, Shaunee and Erin call each other Twin because even though they are clearly not related– Erin being an extremely white girl from Tulsa, and Shaunee being of Jamaican decent from Connecticut– they are freakishly alike."
"It's like they were separated at birth," Stevie Rae said and I held back from commenting.
"Next," Damien said making sure that the conversation didn't derail. "The Dark Daughters– and Sons–" Damien said looking at me then looked back at Zoey. "Are a group made of mostly upperclassmen who say that they are in charge of school spirit and such."
"They are hags from hell," Shaunnee said and Erin giggled.
"That's what I said!" Erin and Shaunee smiled ateach other and Damien rolled his eyes.
"Yeah, they are supposed to be this great, pro-school, pro-vamp organizatuion. Also it's assumed that the leader is being trained to be a High Priestess, so she's supposed to be the heart, mind, and spirit of the school and a future leader in vamp society et certera, et certa. Like Percy said, think of it as a Natinoal Honor Scoiety and a Soritey, but you know you should ad a fraternity to the mix too. Like I said before they're Daughters and Sons."
"It's to bad about the Sons though," Erin said dreamily.
"Yeah, all those hotties being sucked in by hags." Shaunee continued just as deamily.
"Will Y'all quit interrupting me?" Damien said frowning. They all gave Damien an apologetic smile and he then took a deap breath to contuntine. "However, The Dark Daughters are anything but that school spirit positive stuff. At least here, Percy is originally from the New York House of Night so he might have a different opinion."
"Nope," I said flatly remembering how they stayed as far away from me as they could. "Being a demigod fledgling at the epcenter has the opposite affect it does here. They were terrified of me and stayed as far away as they could for me."
"I stand corrected, in any case," Damien said giving me an apologetic look. "They just want everyone to follow them, and unless you conform to their hate for humans they want nothing to do with you."
"Except to give you a hard time," Stevie Rae said with to much knowledge to my liking. I was about to say something until I heard a voice I didn't want to hear until yesterday.
"Percy! Zoey!" Aphrodite said as I turned to see her walking up to us. "The two fledglings I wanted to see."
