Mirabel hardly slept. From her desperate thoughts to the sounds of parties in the streets due Senora Perfecta's engagement to that big dumb hunk Mariano.

She was shaking so much at breakfast, Abuelo asked if she'd accidently made the coffee wrong. But she shook him off, made some excuse about needing thread for a new dress, and headed into town. But she bypassed the main square where Antonio had helped her and headed to the hill.

Casita seemed to glow, covered in new flowers as Isabela waved her hands on the walkway. Abuela was smiling proudly by her side, a look that shocked Mirabel. She'd never seen that before.

"Mirabel?" Isabel gasped, turning to her Abuela and catching sight of her over Abuela's shoulder.

"What…?" Alma's smile was gone as she turned around. "Mirabel. What are you doing here?"

"I need to talk to Bruno." Mirabel planted her feet, schooling her features. She'd never asked the Madrigals for help and was shaking in her bones. Would they deny her like yesterday? "I need a vision."

Whatever Abuela and Isabela had expected, it wasn't that.

"But Tio Bruno…he doesn't…no one wants…." Isabela stuttered, glancing between Abuela and Mirabel.

Abuela's lips were pressed into a firm line. "Why do you need a vision?"

"It's…personal," Mirabel forced out.

"Well, if you can't tell me why-"

"Isn't this family supposed to help people? Isn't that why you have your powers?" Mirabel countered. "Well I'm asking for help. Or do you only help people you like?"

People who were working outside further down the hill heard Mirabel's yelling and looked up. Seeing the giftless child up there, their attention was grabbed. Abuela saw their eyes watching and straightened her spine.

"Fine. I will fetch Bruno."

It was a tense few minutes while Isabela and Mirabel were left waiting. The polite side of her drilled into her by her Abuelo urged her to congratulate Isabela. But her stubborn side made her tongue immobile.

Finally Abuela returned, trailed by Bruno. He seemed surprised to see Mirabel, but then again he always seemed spooked about something. She supposed that's what constantly looking into the future for 50 years did to a person.

"Mirabel," he greeted her. "What do you need?"

"A vision," she replied, eyeing Abuela. "Can you come with me?"

"Well, my vision cave is…" he glanced back at his tower.

"You can't give a vision elsewhere?" Mirabel's brave face seemed to crack as she glanced at the house. Visions of cracks sprang to her mind and she refocused on Bruno.

"I need a wide open space, like my cave."

"I know a place."

Thankfully, Abuela and Isabela let them walk off alone.

Mirabel led Bruno to a small clearing, hidden by wide trees and big rocks, slightly set into the mountains surrounding the Encanto. Mirabel sat on a rock that was nearly flat and faced Bruno.

"So what do you want me to look for?" Bruno asked, not making eye contact. "Love, lost things, just general future stuff?"

"I don't want you to look," Mirabel said. "I want you to give me a vision you already had. The one you had when I didn't get my gift."

Bruno paled and his eyes went even wider. "I…I don't…um."

"I know you had a vision about me and that it was the reason I was…moved." Mirabel didn't want to start a fight when she needed answers. "And I know you saw the cracks the night Antonio got his gift. What does it all mean?"

Bruno sighed and slumped onto the ground in front of her, his hands instantly twisting into the long grass to fiddle with. "Look, kid, I'm an awful liar. Yes, I had a vision and yes I saw the cracks. Hernando patched them but there's always the risk they'll come back. But why do you want to know about all this? Augustine said you stopped using the family name."

Mirabel stiffened. "I didn't choose to not be a Madrigal, Abuela forced me out of the family. And your magical Casita tried to kill me. A tile nearly fell on my head and the whole house was shaking. I…I want to know if I'm still in danger."

"You? In danger?" Bruno laughed. "If anything it's the opposite."

"What?"

Bruno seemed to realize his mistake in an instant. "Nevermind. You're safe, I promise. As long as you don't go in Casita, you'll be fine."

"Even the house…" Mirabel breathed. "Even the house hates me?"

Bruno shrugged.

"What was in your vision?"

"I….I can't tell you."

"Because of Abuela?"

"Look, I'm just trying to protect the family!" Bruno snapped, narrowing his eyes, leaping up. "You have no idea the pressure I'm under, been under, my whole life!"

"No, I don't," Mirabel replied coldly, standing to match his height. "You kicked me out, remember? It was your vision that cost me my family! My home! It's your fault I'm not a Madrigal!"

"You would've destroyed us!"

Silence. The two stared at each other, wide eyed.

"What?" Mirabel choked out, breathing hard.

"You…the vision I had," Bruno sighed. He looked skywards and seemed to come to a decision. "On the night you didn't get your gift, Abuela asked me to look into the future and see what it meant. And what I saw…the house falling, the family in danger. It was chaos. And you…you were at the center of it all. But it would change. Sometimes the house would be okay and other times it wouldn't. Like your future was undecided."

"And Abuela still banished me?"

"She thought it was safest. You would be raised with people who were…wouldn't make you feel inferior. And you'd be away from Casita."

Mirabel slumped onto the grass, staring at her lap. All this time she'd thought it was because she didn't have a gift. But now…was she destined to destroy the magic?

"Kid…Mirabel. I don't know what will happen." He crouched down in front of her, hands flinching as if to comfort her but they stayed in his lap. "But you've got a shot to live your own life, be your own person. You aren't…you don't have to be a Madrigal. You can just be Mirabel and have a good life in town. That's what I was hoping for you."

"You expect me to just go back to town now? Live my life knowing I could…destroy something? Maybe even…harm people?" Tears were welling in her eyes.

"The future is up to you. That's all I know," Bruno promised.

Mirabel took a shaky breath and nodded. "Are you going to tell Abuela?"

"And get in trouble?" Bruno chuckled. "Not at all, no. That woman is scary."

Mirabel let out a surprised giggle. She wondered what life would have been like if she'd gotten a gift for the hundredth time in her life. Perhaps her and Bruno would've been close.

"I should go," she sighed, standing up. "My Abuelo is going to worry if I'm not home for lunch."

Bruno nodded, also standing. "He seems like a good man."

"He is," Mirabel replied. "I don't know where I'd be without him."

Bruno turned to leave but Mirabel suddenly reached out, grabbing his arm. "Thank you. For telling me."

He gave her a sad smile and walked off, toward Casita and the only life he'd ever known. While Mirabel turned her back on the magical house, and walked back to her ordinary town, still reeling.
