Jonas sat in the beanbag chair in the corner of the room reading his book. Michael and BJ were fast asleep on the small playmat in the other corner, the woman called Osgood was at the small desk on her computer, while his grandfather was away talking with Miss Stewart.
It was strange suddenly having all this family, but Jonas did like his cousins, his aunt Amy was very nice, and his grandfather was too. He knew that his new uncle was in trouble and Gideon needed help too, and that his daddy needed to help them.
But Jonas wished that his daddy was here.
An alarm suddenly sounded, and Osgood jumped up, she hit a button to stop it sounding in the room before she pulled out her phone.
"Jonas," she turned to him, "I need you to stay here with the twins. I'll be right back."
Watching her worriedly Jonas looked at the twins who thankfully hadn't woken up. He grabbed the bag that sat in the corner which held nappies and some food for them that grandfather took on the few occasions they'd gone out for a walk. Putting it beside his cousins, Jonas then grabbed some toys for them along with a few juice boxes and packets of biscuits for him. He added the first aid kit then pulled the quilt and pillow off his bed before he sat beside the twins. Pulling out the shield his daddy had given him, Jonas placed it on the ground pushing the button. The air around him shimmered, meaning the shield was working just like his daddy promised it would.
Jonas hunted through the first aid kit looking for something to use in case he had to defend his cousins.
Osgood returned to the room and stalled, looking around confused not seeing them there but before she could say anything a man walked in. Osgood tried to move away but the man grabbed her and threw her against the wall. Jonas covered his mouth with his hand so he didn't make a sound as she slammed into the wall and fell to the ground unmoving.
"I know you're in here," the bad man called as he aimed the gun he was holding around the room, "I won't hurt you little boy. You'll enjoy training to be a Time Master."
Jonas found a sedative in the First Aid kit and held it ready for when the man came close. The twins were still sleeping but had begun to move around a bit which Jonas worried meant they were waking up.
The man moved closer to Jonas who checked it was facing the right way before he slammed it into the man's leg and hit the button.
"What the…" he jumped pulling his leg away and looking at where Jonas was hidden by the shield, "How did you…how did…" he swayed before collapsing to the ground.
Jonas looked at the man laying very close to them, he looked like he was sleeping but Jonas wasn't too sure and didn't want to risk it.
The door swung open again and Miss Stewart ran in followed by several guards as well as his grandfather making Jonas sigh in relief.
"Cuff him and get him back to his cell," Miss Stewart ordered the guards, "Make sure this time he has no way to escape. Get Osgood to the infirmary as well."
"Jonas?" his grandfather called worriedly, "Jonas, where are you?"
Shutting down the shield, Jonas looked up as Miss Stewart and his grandfather stared down at him surprised.
"Oh, you are so clever," Jonas' grandfather knelt down and hugged him tightly, "You protected your cousins and stopped that man. Your dad is going to be so proud of you."
Jonas nodded before he began to cry. His grandfather moved them over to the big comfy chair and pulled Jonas into his lap hugging him tightly. Jonas clung to his new grandfather, hoping his daddy came back soon.
Rip stared at the woman standing in front of him, looking exactly the way she did in his mind except the fact she was blonde.
Frowning he demanded, "Who are you?"
"Interesting," the woman stated as she looked around the Council Chambers at everyone Rip realised were frozen, "I did not think you would know the difference?"
Rip folded his arms, "There are a lot of things that are off but basically your hair is wrong. Gideon tested having blonde hair once when she was deciding how she wanted to look," he shrugged and added, "She also didn't like having red hair."
"Intriguing," the woman mused, "She said you would know I wasn't her."
A shiver slid down Rip's spine, "Where is Gideon? And who are you?"
"I am the one who holds your fate in my hands," she replied.
Rip glared at her, "That doesn't answer my question."
She turned and looked around the room
The Doctor moved to his side surprising Rip that he wasn't frozen along with everyone else, "Be careful, Rip. She may look harmless, but she isn't."
"The Time Lord is right," the woman smiled before reaching out to cup his cheek, "It's been some time since I met one of the children of time."
"Doctor, do you know who this is?" Rip demanded.
The Doctor nodded, "I have an idea."
"Who are you?" Rip stated once more at the fake Gideon.
Looking at him directly so Rip could see her eyes, he gasped at the pure energy filling them.
"You're the Oculus," Rip breathed in realisation.
She smiled at him, a shadow of Gideon's sweet smile on this replica of her form, "You are as intelligent as your file shows you to be, Captain Hunter."
"Where is Gideon?" Rip demanded again, "What did you do to her?"
The Oculus tilted her head, "Is this concern or a desire for your AI to be intact."
"It's concern for my best friend," Rip stated.
The Oculus snapped her fingers and Gideon appeared before them. She moved instantly to Rip and hugged him.
"Are you okay?" Rip asked her concerned.
Gideon nodded, "I am, Rip."
He started slightly as she never called him by his name in front of others. There was something different about her, but this was definitely his Gideon.
"What is going on?" Rip asked her.
She grimaced, "The Oculus is trying to determine if you are a good man."
Rip frowned, "Why?"
"You gave the order to destroy me. Twice now," the Oculus reminded him, "Gideon claims it was done to protect time, but the others disagree."
He stared at her before stating softly, "Druce and the former council used the knowledge you gave them to alter the timeline so they could put a madman in a position of power. They had my wife murdered, they abducted my son…"
"What?" Gideon interrupted him, "Jonas is alive?"
Rip nodded, "He's with my father."
Joy covered her face and Gideon hugged him again.
"The child you grieved for," the Oculus noted with interest, before she asked, "What proof do you have of this?"
"Proof?" Rip asked confused, "Surely you're the one who showed them the future and gave them the ability to do that? You saw them manipulate me and the other Captains? Why am I proving anything to you?"
The Oculus stared at him, her eyes beginning to glow, "Do you understand what I am?"
Rip glared at her, "I know exactly who and what you are. You want to blame someone for what we did to stop the Time Masters, then fine blame me. I gave the order. But you are a sentient being who could have stopped them and you didn't. You could have warned us or told us that you weren't just an energy stream. I wouldn't have done that if I'd known I was hurting you."
The energy being continued to stare at him.
"If you're going to do something to me," Rip stated sharply, "Then do it. Because I have a son to get back to, my brother to reunite with his children and two time travel organisations to deal with."
Gideon gripped Rip's hand tightly worry emanating from her, "Captain, be careful."
"Why?" he turned to her, "Nothing I do or say can make any difference. She already knows what she's going to do."
"He's right, Gideon," the Oculus said softly, "As I told you before, you were advocating for Captain Hunter. I made my decision based on you."
Gideon let go of Rip's hand asking, "And what was that?"
The Oculus smiled at her, "Captain Hunter, you have a great deal of work to do. I shall be watching."
"Watching?" Rip asked.
She nodded before turning to the Doctor who had watched the entire exchange in silence, "Be safe, child of time."
The Doctor gave her a quick nod of his head.
"Wait," Gideon demanded, "What did you decide?"
Rip took Gideon's hand, "We're not in your matrix, Gideon."
"I know that, Captain," Gideon rolled her eyes.
He reached out and stroked her cheek, "We're not in any matrix. This is reality."
"That's impossible," Gideon whispered, she turned to the Oculus, "I don't understand."
The Oculus smiled at her, "You were right, Gideon. You are so much more than an AI."
"But I can feel my ship," Gideon said.
"I know," the Oculus smiled.
Rip blinked and the world around him started to move again.
"Gideon?" Rory asked confused finding her standing at his side, his question echoed by the Legends.
"Long story," Rip said before he turned to the former AI, "And one I look forward to."
x
Rip turned his attention from Gideon to his brother.
"There's someone who wants to see you," Rip told Rory, frowning bemused as he watched the Doctor unlock the TARDIS door, "You locked her in?"
"You've met her," the Doctor grinned, "Only way to stop her jumping the gun."
Rory's confused look melted to relief as redhead stepped out the TARDIS.
"Amy?" he gasped, Rory didn't even notice the Doctor taking the sword out of his hand, his focus entirely on his wife.
Amy ran into Rory's arms holding him tightly, before kissing him.
"I thought…I remember…" Rory breathed.
"It's okay," Amy soothed.
Rip moved to his brother's side, "Why don't you freshen up and change into something else."
"Sounds like a good idea," Amy smiled, "What about…"
Rip shrugged, "Give me some time to sort out everything here. I need the Doctor's help in a few matters then we'll get you back to the twins."
Amy hugged him before she wrapped her arm around Rory's waist, and they headed into the TARDIS.
Taking a deep breath, Rip looked around at the people who were waiting for him to give instructions. He wasn't sure how he had suddenly become in charge of the Time Masters but, at the moment, he was.
"Captain Baxter," he turned to Eve, "Have Arden and his people put in the cells until a new council can be formed who will decide what to do with them. Dr Harmon, you will provide Captain Mayhew with all the details of your experiment so we can return those you haven't murdered to their homes."
The two Captains nodded and followed his orders. Rip could feel Arden's eyes burning into him and couldn't stop the smug smile he threw at Arden.
Rip turned to the Doctor, "Can you secure the Oculus? Considering we now know it's sentient I don't want there to be any further incidents."
"Good," the Doctor murmured, "I knew you were the smartest Time Master I've ever met."
"Sara," Rip turned to her ignoring the Doctor, "Thank you for your help. I'll send you all back to the Bureau now. Update Bennett with what happened and tell him that I'll need to talk to him soon."
Sara nodded, "What about Ray and Zari?"
"Ray?" Rip called over the radio, "Where are you?"
"We're on the Waverider," Ray replied, "Rip, there's a problem with Gideon."
Rip smiled at Gideon who looked at him innocently, "It's okay. I know and it's not a problem. Get to the Council Chambers. I'm sending you home."
Looking around the large room, Rip knew he had some work to do before he could go home to Jonas but now his brother was safe, and Gideon was at his side (literally) then he would get through this.
