Author's Note: I think I'm finally going to start winding this story down and head toward the ending. There's going to be at least a few more chapters left though. Also, I know next to nothing about Nevada or insects, other than what I've researched online. Reviews are always lovely, as well as any ideas for anything you'd like to see in this story or a future one!
Disclaimer: Nope, not mine sadly.
"I want a baby." Sara said casually from her place on Grissom's office couch while she flipped through a forensic magazine.
Grissom was sitting at his desk doing paperwork and upon hearing her statement, he froze and looked at her over the tops of his glasses. They hadn't really discussed having kids before, but he had thought about it. He had thought about it a lot. He knew Sara's childhood had been less than ideal, so he hadn't wanted to push the subject or get his hopes up. Plus, his age played a huge factor, at least in his thought process anyway.
Seeing the wheels turning in her husband's brain and knowing exactly where his mind was heading, Sara held up a hand to stop whatever was about to come out of his mouth when he went to open it.
"Don't even bring up your age." Sara looked at him. "It's irrelevant."
"Sara." Grissom sighed as he pulled his glasses off and tossed them onto his desk. "I'm almost fifty. My age does matter as far as reproduction goes."
"Griss, you have the sexual stamina of a teenager." Sara gave him the gap-toothed grin he loved so much. "I really don't think it will be an issue."
"Well, that's all thanks to you darlin'." Grissom shot her a lopsided smirk. "You keep me in shape."
"I've been thinking about it a lot lately." Sara's face became serious. "The thought of creating something, a child, that's part you and part me… I realize how much I want that. How much I want to give you that and watch you become a father."
Grissom got up from his desk chair and sat down beside her on the couch. He watched as she fidgeted with the pages of the magazine she was holding. He had never told her how many times he had dreamed about having a child with her. Of a gorgeous baby girl, with Sara's dark hair and brown eyes. In that moment, he realized how much he truly wanted that with Sara.
"I want that, too." Grissom placed a hand on her cheek and turned her to face him. "I want that very much."
"Really?" Sara gave him a brilliant smile.
"Sara, I never imagined myself having children before I met you." Grissom gently kissed her lips. "Like everything else in my life, you changed that. There is nothing more I want than to have a baby with you. To see you carry my child, to see you bring him or her into the world."
Sara couldn't hold back her tears as she grabbed her husband's face and crushed her lips to his. Climbing onto his lap, she thrust her tongue in his mouth. The kiss continued until the need for air tore them apart.
"Just promise me we won't become one of those crazed couples that follow charts or calendars and just use sex for the sake of procreation." Grissom kissed her neck. "Let's just let nature take its course and enjoy the ride."
"Oh, I fully intend to enjoy the ride." Sara husked into his ear before kissing him once more.
"Don't worry, Dr. Grissom. I'll take very good care of them both." Lurie said before the line went dead.
Grissom squeezed his eyes shut and slammed his phone down on the layout table, his face a mix of anger and fear. He realized his breathing had increased and he was trying to calm himself down, when all he wanted to do was throw his phone against the wall or break something. Lurie knew that Sara was pregnant. Grissom had never felt as scared and useless as he did in that moment.
"Fuck!" He roared, slamming his hands down on the layout table.
Moments later, four other bodies rushed into the room and took in the man bent over the table. They were all immediately on high alert, knowing by the older man's posture that something had to have happened to set him off. His breathing was deep and fast, his eyes were screwed shut and his whole body was shaking.
"Gil?" Catherine called softly. "What happened?"
Grissom remained quiet for several minutes before he finally spoke.
"He knows she's pregnant." Grissom's voice broke.
"Shit." Nick breathed out.
"What do you mean?" Catherine questioned her friend.
"He made her call me from a burner phone." Grissom let out a shaky sigh. "She apologized, like it was her fault."
The room was silent, four sets of eyes looking from each other to their friend and leader. None of them were sure what this meant, and they were afraid to find out.
"What did he say to you, Gil?" Catherine finally spoke up.
"He thanked me." Grissom gave a dark laugh as he started pacing. "The bastard thanked me. The maniac truly thinks he's going to raise MY child with MY wife!"
Grissom was shaking with rage and none of them had ever seen him so unhinged. They almost didn't recognize the man standing before them. It was like a switch had been flipped and the Grissom they all knew was no longer there. Greg was so scared that he shifted behind Nick while Catherine and Warrick looked at each other.
"Griss." Catherine said slowly, as if approaching a rabid animal. "Archie managed to isolate some sounds on the video. There's horses in the background."
Grissom ignored the red head, furiously flipping through evidence photos on the layout table and mumbling to himself. His brain was going a million miles a minute trying to find something, anything, that would lead him to his Sara.
"Grissom!" Warrick yelled, finally grabbing the older man by the shoulders to get his attention.
"Where is she?!" Grissom choked out. "I have to bring them home."
"Griss, we're doing everything we can. You know that." Warrick looked into his mentor's broken eyes. "We found something. Nick, show him."
Nick was so shaken up that he had almost forgotten about the small evidence bag in his hand. Walking up to the pair, he held the bag up for Grissom to see. "We went through Lurie's car again and we found this up under the driver's seat."
It took Grissom a moment to clear his mind and focus on the bag Nick was holding in front of him. Once he registered what it was, he snatched the bag and put it on the layout table to get a better look. Grabbing a magnifying glass, he bent over until he was practically eye to eye with the creature.
"What is that?" Catherine gaped at the bag in disgust.
"Rhyacophila fuscula." Grissom answered, his gaze still locked on the evidence bag containing the green, worm-like insect. "It's a green sedge caddisfly larva."
Without another word, Grissom rushed out of the layout room and headed for his office with his team right behind him. He went straight to one of his bookcases, pulling down a map of Nevada.
"Cath, you said there were horses in the background, right?" Grissom asked as he looked over the map.
"Yeah. Archie said it sounded like a whole herd." Catherine replied quickly.
"A herd of horses, a caddisfly larva that are found in cool streams at moderate to high elevations." Grissom mumbled to himself as he traced his finger along the map.
Catherine, Warrick, Nick, and Greg all looked at each other as they watched their mentor. They knew he was working something out in his head, and they just had to wait until he got there. They didn't have to wait long until Grissom slammed his hand down on his desk and looked up at them with the first hint of a smile they had seen from him in days.
"I know where she is!"
