Chapter 4: School Spirit
At Echo Creek Academy…
Cheering was heard in the background as Awesome Opossums banner; various captions on the banner read 'PLEASE TRY!', 'GO TEAM!' and 'DON'T PLAY DEAD!'
"Oh, my gosh!"Star cheered. "I can't wait, I can't wait! "
There were crowd of school students at a pep rally with Star, Marco and Alfonzo sitting together while Miss Skullnick sat down eating a bucket of fried chicken.
"My very first pep rally!"Star gasped excitedly. "I am so excited!"
Star bumped the beach ball and a small rabbit-like creature appeared from her wand.
"When aren't you excited?"Marco asked.
"Shh."Star instructed as she shushed Marco.
Serena carefully moved past a couple of students to go sit next to Star, Marco and Alfonzo.
"Hey, guys."Serena greeted. "Sorry, I'm late. Did I miss anything?"
"Nope."Marco answered. "You're just in time, Serena."
Serena turned her attention on the field, only to see Principal Skeeves appeared while holding a microphone.
"And now, Brittney Wong, who became head cheerleader on her own!"Principal Skeeves announced. "And not because her dad made a generous donation to the school!"
Principal Skeeves gets hit in the head with a beach ball as the Echo Creek Academy spirit committee runs out carrying Brittney Wong.
Serena scowled in annoyance seeing Brittany Wong, who was her egotistical rival and used her status to control others in order to get what she wants.
"Go, Echo Creek! Let's try not to get beat!"the Spirit Committee chorused. "Go, Echo Creek! Let's try not to get beat! Go, go, go, go, yeah!"
Brittney walked off the cheerleaders carrying her like stairs and takes the microphone away from Principal Skeeves.
"Make some noise, if you love the Awesome Opossums!"Brittney encouraged.
The crowd cheered at Brittney except for Serena, who lightly clapped.
"I love opossums!"Star remarked. "They carry their babies on their backs!"
"She means our football team, Star."Serena corrected with a small frown. "And this time we're going up against the Warriors."
"The Warriors."Marco murmured and shuddered fearfully.
"Warriors?"Star said in confusion.
"Our rivals from Silver Hill Prep."Alfonzo exclaimed.
"Every year, their team slaughters our guys."Marco admitted.
"It's gonna be a bloodbath."Miss Skullnick added.
Miss Skullnick pulled a whole chicken skeleton out of her mouth.
"That's terrible!"Star gasped. "We must do something!"
"Well, you could join the Spirit Committee."Marco insisted. "Those kids are relentless when it comes to supporting the team."
Ed performed a leg split while holding a pair of pennants.
"Opossums!"Ed cheered.
"Relentless."Marco repeated.
"What a great idea!"Star remarked as she took Marco's hand. "We better pick up some supplies!"
"As fun as that sounds, you can go without me."Marco stated.
"Your on your own on this one, Star."Serena declared with her arms folded. "I am not too fond of the Spirit Committee."
"Okay!"Star remarked happily and went over to whisper to Miss Skullnick. "Hey, Skullzy. What's your favorite weapon?"
"Battleaxe."Miss Skullnick answered.
Star winked and clicked her teeth before heading off to get supplies.
"And now, our new mascot...that I never approved of...The Awesome Opossum!"Brittney announced.
The Awesome Opossum hopped onto the field.
"Woo-hoo!"Awesome Opossum cheered. "Alright!"
The bottom half of the Opossum's costume falls, revealing the wearer's underwear.
"Oh no."Awesome Opossum replied.
"Where's the real possum?"Marco asked. "Did the Warriors steal it again? Those jerks!"
"Sadly, the real possum wasn't playing possum."Alfonzo admitted with a sad look.
"You mean he-"Serena started.
"Yeah."Alfonzo agreed with a nod.
"I hiss, I bite, I shake my tail all night!"Awesome Opossum cheered.
The mouth of the Awesome Opossum's costume pulls back to reveal Ferguson's face.
"Hey, that's Ferguson!"Marco commented.
"He's our new mascot!"Alfonzo remarked.
Marco's eyes widen in shock.
"Oh, no!"Marco responded. "That means the Warriors are gonna to steal him!"
"Kidnap Ferguson?"Serena said in disbelief. "What would the Warriors gain in that?"
"Oh, that's silly."Alfonzo chuckled.
"The only thing that's silly is how the Warriors are gonna look when they try to steal my friend!"Marco stated.
Star ran through the school hallway and stopped in front of a trophy case that houses pictures of former Awesome Opossums team members.
"So many brave young men."Star pouted. "So many tragic losses."
The blonde haired princess breathed on the glass and draws a sad face in the condensation.
Marco sneaked through the hallway.
"Alpha Team one, commencing security sweep for the Warriors."Marco reported, pretending to have a spy watch. "Over."
Marco continued sneaking through the hall, shimmying against the walls and rolling on the floor until he's next to the trophy case.
"Oh, Marco."Star greeted.
Marco freaked out and falls over the ground before Star helped him up.
"How can we prevent another tragic loss to our team?"Star asked.
"Well, if I knew anything about football, I'd use the element of surprise."Marco insisted with a smirk.
"Of course, of course, of course..."Star answered intently.
"Spritz 'em!"Marco sneered. "Bring out the kitty cat offence!"
"Yes?"Star said.
"Maybe even throw a couple big bombs!"Marco insisted.
"Bombs!"Star responded and an idea came to her mind. "Yeah, I've gotta go tell that to the Spirit Committee. Bye!"
Marco continued sneaking about before speaking in his imaginative spy watch.
"Officer Butterfly, the coast is clear."Marco reported. "I repeat the coast is clear. Move! Move! Move!"
"Quit whispering!"Serena scowled in annoyance. "This is not a security sweep!"
Serena and Alfonzo pushed Ferguson across the hall.
Serena wore a standard security guard uniform with darker accented shoulder pads, a dark grey cap labelled 'SECURITY' and brown shoes.
"Ugh, this is not the respect a guy in a possum suit deserves."Ferguson complained.
"At least you're not the one wearing a fake police uniform."Serena retorted. "I still don't get why I have to be dressed like this."
"You're dad is a police officer, Serena."Marco responded. "So if you're dressed as one, the Warriors wouldn't dare try to steal Ferguson."
"Okay. For starters, my dad is a detective. Not a police officer."Serena scoffed with a frown. "There is a big difference."
"But didn't he work as an police officer?"Marco asked, raising an eyebrow.
"He graduated from the police academy at California around the time he was dating my mum."Serena exclaimed. "That's all I know."
In the School Gymnasium…
The Spirit Committee were practicing cheerleading routines for the school's upcoming game.
Sabrina stood in front of a trampoline with a nervous look as Brittney sat down on a chair while holding a megaphone.
"Don't worry, Sabrina."Brittney assured. "The Spirit Boys are gonna catch you. Grow some pompoms!"
Sabrina jumped on the trampoline and flipped through the air.
However when Star bursts into the gym, the boys got distracted and Sabrina ended up hitting the floor.
"What the-"Brittney started.
Star takes one of Andrea's pompoms.
"Do these explode?"Star asked.
Star pulled the handle off the pompom like a grenade pin and throws it at Ed, but it lightly hits his face.
"Maybe we can set them on fire!"Star suggested.
Star prepared to use her wand but got interrupted by Brittney.
"Uh, we're kinda in the middle of something."Brittney stated.
"You're the leader."Star said with an intrigued expression. "What's the plan?"
Brittney gave a curt laugh at Star.
"This year we have a secret weapon."Brittney declared and snapped her fingers before she was joined by two other cheerleaders. "We're gonna distract them with out booty-shaking dance moves. Uh-huh."
Brittney and the two cheerleaders start shaking their butts causing Star to blush at the display.
"Do you know nothing of combat?!"Star asked in disbelief. "No Warrior is gonna be distracted by Chantal's booty!"
"Wha...?"Chantal murmured in shock.
"Lucky for you, my mum assigned the royal guards as my babysitters."Star declared with a hint of pride.
Star smiled dreamily at the memory of the royal guard babysitter teaching her how to demise her enemies when she was just a little girl.
"I know on planet 'Moo-ni' or wherever it is you're from, it may be okay to be stupid, but no pesky magical foreigner is gonna question my leadership!"Brittney insulted angrily. "You are officially banned from the spirit committee!"
Brittney whipped her hair causing Star to frown at her.
"Fine!"Star answered and narrowed her eyes. "Looks like it's all up to me."
Star covered her ears and rushed out when Brittney shouted at her using the megaphone.
"Okay, thanks for coming out!"Brittney snapped. "Come back never!"
At the School Exterior…
Marco, Alfonzo, Ferguson and Serena stood in the school parking lot.
"Okay, if a Warrior tries to kidnap you, blow on this stranger danger whistle."Marco instructed.
Marco handed Ferguson a whistle to use if he's kidnapped, but Ferguson refused it.
"This is ridiculous."Ferguson complained and suddenly smirked. "I just wanted to dress up like a possum to pick up on ladies."
"You've got to be kidding."Serena muttered in disbelief.
"Hey!"Marco argued. "This whistle's gonna save your life!"
Marco tried to force the whistle into Ferguson's mouth, but he kept resisting.
"Put it in your mouth!"Marco demanded. "Do it!"
"No!"Ferguson shouted.
Alfonzo notice Serena was busy using her phone to record the argument.
"Aren't you going to stop the fight?"Alfonzo asked.
"Nah."Serena responded with a small smirk. "I rather record how long this will take. Janna is gonna like this."
"Blow it!"Marco ordered.
"Never!"Ferguson argued. "You get it away from me!"
Star looked into a dumpster and found four stray cats are seen eating thrown-out food.
"You guys ready to be part of my kitty cat offence?"Star asked in excited tone.
The stray cats meowed and continued to eat the small amount of food they were eating causing Star to sigh in frustration.
"Ugh, fine. Then I guess we gotta do this the hard way."Star declared with a frown and jumped into the dumpster. "Kitty!"
Star jumped into the dumpster to catch the stray kittens.
The dumpster shook and rattled as garbage was thrown everywhere and the stray cats yowled in agony.
"I got you now!"Star remarked.
The dumpster's lid closed as magic bursted from Star's wand escaped from the gaps.
At the Diaz Household…
A squirrel runs across a power line as Marco looked suspiciously outside his room's window.
"Why can't I go home?!"Ferguson questioned. lDude, it's Taco Wednesday. It's the day we eat all the leftovers from Taco Tuesday!"
"Because your house would be the first place the Warriors would look when they try to kidnap you!"Marco declared.
"It kinda feels like you're trying to kidnap me."Ferguson argued.
"I'd watch that talk if you ever want to see your parents again."Marco warned with a menacing look.
"Marco, quit acting weird."Serena scowled. "No one is kidnapping anyone."
"Marco!"Star's voice called out. "Rena!"
Marco opened the window blinds for he and Serena to see Star hanging off a power line while holding a squirrel by its tail.
"Hey guys, do any of you have any highly flammable liquid?"Star asked.
"Nope."Serena replied.
"I don't know."Marco answered. "Check the garage."
"Cool, thanks!"Star thanked.
Star drops to the ground, taking the squirrel with her as Marco closed the blinds.
"Shouldn't be we worried about what Star is doing?"Serena asked in concern.
"Chill out, Serena."Marco answered with a smile. "She's just planning out new football strategies for the game."
"But Star doesn't-"Serena started.
"Man, I bet I could get a lot of action if I had a real prehensile tail."Ferguson suggested.
"Oh, yeah."Alfonzo agreed.
"Hey, ladies, you care for a drink?"Ferguson remarked. "Wha!"
Ferguson accidentally whipped a soda can with his costume's tail, dropping it on Marco's laptop.
The laptop flashed and the screen flickers to black.
Ferguson whipped his costume tail at an open soda can.
The soda spilled onto a nearby laptop, shorting it out.
Marco, Ferguson and Alfonzo stand in shock and silence while Serena face palmed in annoyance.
Later that Night…
The stands of Echo Creek Academy football field were filled with crowds.
The Warriors prepared for kickoff as the Opossums cheerleaders started their booty-shaking routine.
"Two, four, six, eight, distract them with our booty shake!"Spirit Committee chanter.
On the field, the Warriors warm up for the game as one of them cracked his neck and laughed sinisterly at his opponents.
The Opossums watched the Warriors in fear as one of them fainted.
Marco, Ferguson, Alfonzo and Serena stood next to the bleachers.
Marco 'protects' Ferguson as a little girl runs past causing Serena to roll her eyes.
"Just a little girl, Diaz."Serena sighed. "No big deal."
"It's almost game time and thanks to us, no Warriors have even gotten close to you."Marco remarked confidently.
Star suddenly appeared behind Marco and Serena dressed in armour and holding a spiked mace.
Star wore an iron armour with a grey plaited skirt, grey boots with knee spikes that were mounted with pink gemstones, a pink star on the chest, grey striped leggings, spiky grey shoulder pads and a navy blue helmet with wings and spikes. In addition, her cheek marks were white skulls instead of hearts.
"Who's ready for a bloody, bloody bloodbath?"Star laughed maniacally.
"What's with that crazy look in your eyes?"Marco asked.
Star smirked darkly with red bloodshot eyes.
"What do you mean?"Star sneered.
Marco looked at Alfonzo.
"Watch Ferguson."Marco ordered. "Me and Serena need to talk to Princess Cuckoo Pants."
Marco and Serena pulled Star away as two warriors appeared from behind the bleachers and abduct Ferguson.
"Stranger danger!"Ferguson shouted while blowing whistle. "Stranger danger!"
"Okay Star, what are you up to?"Marco questioned.
"And what's with the armour your wearing?"Serena asked. "If it's Ludo and his minions, they arrived in a bad time."
"Nope. I just exactly did what Marco said."Star declared as he picked up her wand in the form a of mace. "I booby-trapped the battlefield."
Marco and Serena's eyes widen in pure shock.
"WHAT?!"Marco and Serena shouted in unison.
Marco and Serena turned to see the football field with landmines, pitfall traps and laser sensors.
"Star! The Warriors weren't actually gonna kill our team!"Marco protested. "They were just going to beat them in football! Which is a game!"
The excited look on Star's face disappeared.
"Ohhhh…"Star said in a low tone.
Serena glared at Marco.
"And you said Star was planning out new football strategies."Serena retorted.
The referee blowed his whistle causing the game to start.
The Warriors kick the ball during kickoff, setting off a landmine.
The football landed in Justin's hands, but he dropped the ball and the Opossums scattered about the field in fear.
The crowds started to scatter in terror as one of the Warriors was pulled into a blue vortex.
Ed sets off another landmine and goes flying through the air.
Star looked on in worry, feeling guilty on what she had done.
"Oh, no."Star said worriedly. "Everything's going according to plan."
The referee blew his whistle again and tripped over a tripwire.
The end zone lifted up and various creatures come out from underground including giant magical squirrels and three-eyed fire cats.
"Let me guess, the kitty cat offence?"Marco guessed.
Star chuckled nervously in respond.
The three teenagers noticed a giant squirrel chasing some of the Warriors.
"We have to do something!"Serena demanded as she activated her ring. "Come on!"
Star briefly hesitated on what to do before running off with Serena as she retrieved her mace.
Marco dodged exploding landmines and slams his foot on a giant squirrel's tail, stopping it in its tracks.
The Diaz boy gets in front of the squirrel and kicked its face as it gets up again.
A couple of the Warriors started cheering at Marco.
"Alright!"A Warrior cheered. "Dude, you are awesome!"
"Uh, thanks, bro."Marco thanked.
A magical bird swooped down to pick up the little girl.
However, Serena picked up the little girl in her arms before the magical bird could.
"Phoenix Fire Blast!"Serena chanted.
Serena blasted the fire attack on the magical bird changing it into a small pigeon covered in cinders.
The orange haired girl brought the little girl safely back to her parents before going back to the battlefield.
A giant squirrel pounces on Marco to attack.
Star tried to rescue a Warrior from the vortex, but notice Marco was in trouble.
"Marco!"Star called out.
Star picked up her mace and goes to help Marco, leaving the Warrior in the vortex.
"No, no no, nooooo!"the Warrior cried out.
"Jupiter Oak Vine!"Serena chanted.
A long sparkly greenish vine burst out from Serena's ring and she used it to bring the Warrior player out of the vortex.
Star jumped into the air and pulled her mace apart to reveal her magic wand inside.
"Mending Heart Hurricane!"Star chanted.
Star fired a magic blast at the giant squirrel that turns it back into eight normal squirrels.
One of them gnaws on Marco's head before scurrying away.
The Spirit Committee ran across the field with Brittney shoving the others aside.
"Out of my way!"Brittney shouted. "I am too pretty to die!"
A giant snake burrowed underneath Brittney and popped its head out of the ground.
Brittney screamed as the giant snake tossed her into the air and caught her in its mouth.
"Rainbow Heart Attack!"Serena chanted.
Serena turned the giant snake back into hundreds of normal worms.
Brittney landed on the ground and spits out snake saliva.
"Love the new look, Brittney."Serena taunted smugly, taking a picture with her phone. "It really suits your personality."
Brittney growled in anger as Serena went to join Star and Marco.
Marco saves some of the Warriors from the fire cats, but he was soon surrounded by fire cats and giant squirrels.
"Nuclear Heart Healing Hurricane!"Star chanted.
Star dropped out of the sky and turned all of the monsters back to normal with a wide blast of magic.
The stray cats and squirrels scatter to go their separate ways.
Two of the Warriors continued carrying Ferguson away.
"Come on, fellas!"Ferguson protested. "Can't we discuss this man to possum?!"
The Warriors get blown away by Star and Serena's landmines, freeing Ferguson.
Marco restrained a few more magical monsters as Star and Serena turned them back to normal.
"Hey, Marco, you were right!"Ferguson called out. "They were trying to kidnap me!"
"Ferguson, get off the field!"Marco demanded.
"What?!"Ferguson asked in confusion. "I can't hear you through all the explosions!"
Ferguson runs onto a landmine and it goes off causing Serena to wince at the sight.
"Ferguson!"Marco cried out.
Ferguson laid on the ground smouldering as Marco rushed over to him.
"No, buddy! I'm sorry! I failed you!"Marco shouted in shame and hugged Ferguson. "Forgive me!"
Ferguson suddenly opened his eyes and smiled at Marco.
"Dude!"Ferguson replied. "I was just playing possum! It's what we do!"
"You're alive!"Marco said in joy and angrily started shaking Ferguson. "This is why you only have three friends!"
The destroyed football field showed an upright falling over, one of the Warriors picked himself up out of a crater and Brittney sits in shock with her mascara running.
A burnt Opossums banner falls as Star, Marco and Serena looked out upon the destruction.
"I've really messed up."Star said in shame.
"You mean, we really messed up."Marco corrected. "I should've been watching out for you."
"I should've as well since we are family."Serena added in guilt. "Sorry, Star."
Star shared a smile with Marco and Serena.
"Let's get outta here!"A Warrior panicked.
All the Warriors dashed onto their school bus and it speeded away from Echo Creek Academy.
"Hey, they just forfeited."Justin announced. "We win!"
The crowd stood up from cowering and cheered at their victory.
The Opossums picked up Star, Marco, Serena and Ferguson as the crowd cheered at them.
"Woo-hoo!"Star rang out and became curious. "Huh. Why do I have this weird feeling I'm forgetting something?"
Another magical bird flew forward to take Marco, but Serena quickly blasted it back into a normal pigeon.
"Was that it?"Serena assumed.
"Yep."Star agreed with a smile.
