Chapter 5: Cheer up, Star
At Echo Creek Academy…
Star and Serena were walking together in the school hallway.
Serena wore a gold blouse with quarter sleeves, the cuff, collar and the buttons were yellow. She wore a necklace and brown tank-top beneath this along with denim shorts and a pair of burnt orange and pale yellow slip-ons with yellow socks. On her hair was an yellow dragonfly clip.
"Hey Star, do you realise your 4th great-grandmother, Crescenta Butterfly looks a bit like you?"Serena asked.
"Yeah. We do look alike."Star remarked. "But she was actually a proud rule maker and always thought herself as the best."
"Really? That's interesting."Serena commented with a fake smile and thought. "She sounds more like a brat to me though."
Suddenly dissonant keyboard sound fill the air causing the students to cover their ears from hearing the awful sound.
"Make it stop!"A male student shouted while laying down on the floor. "Make it stop!"
"No, no, no, no!"Janna shouted while running off.
"Not again!"Serena retorted in annoyance.
Serena scowled as she irritably covered her ears to not hear the noise before she noticed Star looking wide-eyed at something.
"Star?"Serena said in confusion.
Star pulled Principal Skeeves forward while looking at something with a dreamy expression.
"Skeeves."Star responded. "Who is that fresh of breath air?"
Oskar Greason sat on his car playing his keytar discordantly as students around him cover their ears.
"Oh, that degenerate is Oskar Greason."Principal Skeeves explained. "I'd stay away if I were you. That boy has a record."
"Ohhhh, a record..."Star said in awe.
Star sneaked up to Oskar's car before writing her number on a star-shaped sticky note and sticks it to Oskar's keytar.
"Call me."Star whispered.
Star sighed dreamily as she slinked away with a love struck look on her face.
Serena raised an eyebrow at Star as she went back to where he stood.
"You're seriously giving him your phone number?"Serena said in disbelief. "You haven't even spoken to the guy."
"Well, you get nervous when you are around Kevin, Rena."Star said teasingly.
A big blush appeared on Serena's face.
"I do not!"Serena argued.
"Hey, Serena."
Serena freaked out when she notice Kevin walking up to her.
"Oh! H-H-Hi, Kevin!"Serena said with a nervous smile. "W-W-What's up?"
"Not much."Kevin answered lightly. "You see, Miss Asuka from our Art Class said that for our next art project is you'll need to work with a partner. Since I don't have one, I was wondering if you would like to be my partner for the project?"
Serena felt her face heat up at Kevin's respond.
"I….I…I…well…I…"Serena started.
"Is that a no?"Kevin started.
"No! No! No! Of course not!"Serena assured quickly and cleared her throat. "I mean yeah. I would like to be your partner for the art project."
"Cool. Thanks."Kevin thanked with a grateful smile. "We'll do it on Saturday in my house, is that okay?"
"Yeah."Serena assured with a nervous chuckle. "No problemo."
Kevin smiled and then walked away from Serena as Star gives her cousin a smirk.
"Ooh."Star cooed smugly. "Looks like you got a date, Rena."
"It's not a date, Star."Serena scowled quietly. "He just asked me to his partner for the art project. Nothing else."
"It's totally a date, Rena!"Star declared with a smile. "And if Oskar asks me out, we'll have to make this a double date!"
Serena groaned and face palmed in respond.
Afterwards…
Serena went to get Addison after she finished school to go grocery shopping together.
Serena and Addison were at a large indoor shopping mall centre buying stuff around the stores together since they're parents were busy at work.
Addison wore a short-sleeved pink undershirt underneath a slightly darker fuschia sweater with a shooting star accompanied by a purple, teal and orange-striped tail falling toward the left, a matching fuschia headband, a loose purple pencil skirt, white socks coupled with black ballerina flats.
The two sisters were now at a liquor store, looking over different bottles of wine to figure out which wine that they should buy.
"Alright. We got the courgettes, aubergines and peppers."Serena exclaimed while checking the list. "Now all that is left to buy is a wine that both mum and dad enjoy."
"Well, dad doesn't drink wine that much. But mum does."Addison exclaimed in thought. "She seems to enjoy liquor I could buy her that, but I don't know a brand that both she and dad likes."
Serena and Addison checked the shelves to look for the right wine bottle to buy for their parents.
"Hum, I've learned about wines but never tried any. Not that I plan to try any when I am older."Serena pondered and looked at Addison. "Did you find any?"
"Out of luck here."Addison commented and notice another set of wine bottles. "How about this stuff?"
"Maybe those are too sweet."Serena exclaimed and then picked up a wine bottle. "How about a Pinot Noir?"
"I guess that will do."Addison remarked with a smile.
Serena and Addison then left the liquor store and continued their walk through the mall.
Addison munched on a cookie cat ice cream sandwich, enjoying the vanilla and strawberry flavours in it.
"Hey, Serena."Addison spoke up. "Since my birthday is coming in a couple of days, what present are you going to get me?"
"It's a surprise, Addie."Serena answered.
"Oh, come on!"Addison insisted excitedly. "Tell me! Please!"
"Addie, it's a surprise."Serena repeated with a small smirk. "If I told you what it was, it wouldn't be a surprise anymore."
"Fine."Addison whined in defeat and munched on her cookie cat ice cream.
Serena shook her head with an amused look on her face.
The orange haired girl cared a lot of her mischievous yet good hearted little sister and always wanted to be with her.
They may have different mothers, but the two of them were still blood.
The Wilson family were actually from noble lineage, but also well to do crooks who committed crime for enjoyment and sheer thrill. Though most of the family members enjoyed being wealthy and taking pride of stamping over those below them, others were loved by the community due to devoting themselves passionately to worthy civil causes like aiding the poor and improving medical care and infrastructure.
However a few members of the Wilson family were corrupt and insane like Ignacio Wilson; Charlotte's grandfather and Addison's great-grandfather.
It turned out that Ignacio was a man that civilians were terrified of due to his reputation as a serial killer and people usually quickly gave him what he wants so as not to make him angry. Another thing was that he was known to be a member of the SS (Saal-Schutz) that terrifying organisation that was most responsible for the genocidal murder of many innocent civilians during the Second World War.
However, his children weren't anything like him.
But that was all in the past.
With her grandfather gone, Charlotte can now give Serena and Addison a better future with Valen but also with her parents' support.
Serena and Addison returned back to Wilson Manor after finishing their shopping.
Valen was reading a newspaper while Charlotte was sitting down on the sofa with him and relaxing against his shoulder.
"Valen, are you going to keep reading the newspaper all the time?"Charlotte asked teasingly.
"I just can't get police officers out of my head recently."Valen retorted. "A substantial minority of them are also violent racist thugs, who beat and kill people with impunity and frame them for things that they didn't commit. The rest of them cover for the dirty ones."
"And that is why many people lately are counting on you to solve the crimes, Mr Detective Extraordinaire."Charlotte said with a smirk.
"Thanks, Mon Cheri."Valen purred.
Valen gives Charlotte a smug look before they shared a small passionate kiss as he placed down the newspaper and pinned her down on the couch.
Suddenly the sound of a female clearing her throat was heard causing Valen and Charlotte to turn around to see Serena and Addison standing in the doorway.
"Dad, we got the groceries."Serena exclaimed while looking unimpressed. "If you two are done on whatever you're doing, we are waiting for lunch."
"Couldn't you guys have done this another time?"Addison said with a frown. "It's embarrassing."
Charlotte blushed and looked down shyly as Valen cleared his throat in respond.
"Sorry about that, girls."Valen commented with a nervous smile. "I'll prepare the tomato rice."
"And I'll prepare the ratatouille."Charlotte added.
Valen and Charlotte stood up to prepare lunch in the kitchen causing Serena and Addison to glance at each other to quietly giggle.
Later that Day…
Serena headed to the Diaz House after eating lunch with her family.
The orange haired girl knocked on the door causing Marco to answer it.
"Hey, Serena."Marco greeted.
"Hey, Marco."Serena answered. "Where's Star?"
"Upstairs in my room."Marco replied. "She's waiting for Oskar to call her."
"Seriously?"Serena said, raising an eyebrow. "That is what she's doing?"
Marco shrugged in respond.
"That's all she's been doing in the last few hours."Marco admitted.
Serena headed upstairs to Star's room and found her cousin sitting on her bed while staring at Marco's phone.
"Hi again, Star."Serena said while closing on the door. "Wanna work on some magic with me?"
"No thanks, Serena."Star replied brightly, looking at Marco's phone. "I am waiting for Oskar to give me a call."
"Come on, Star."Serena scoffed as she sat down on the bed. "You don't believe Oskar will just call you straight away. You only met him just today."
"I know."Star replied and then sighed dreamily. "But he's so cool."
Serena sweat dropped, not understanding what Star saw in Oskar that made her have a crush on him.
The orange haired girl then stood with Star to look at Marco's phone, but soon after she fell asleep when the early evening turned to late evening to night.
Star's bedroom door creak closed and a shadow crept toward where the two girls were.
Star looked at the shadow, only for a flashlight to turn on and Marco was shown wearing clown makeup.
"Hey, Star!"Marco remarked.
Star shrieked in terror and turned on the lights.
Serena's eyes snapped open hearing Star's scream and saw Marco dressed as a clown.
"Clown!"Serena scowled. "I hate clowns!"
Serena changed her ring to a baseball bat and hits Marco with it.
"Ow!"Marco grunted in pain and quickly walked away. "I thought she liked clowns! Sorry!"
Serena shook her head as Star still lied on her bed.
"Star, you don't need to be sad."Serena complemented. "If a guy doesn't like you, he's not worth it."
"That's easy for you to say, Rena."Star sighed sadly. "You got a date with Kevin."
"It's not a date."Serena scoffed.
"Hey, Star, up here!"Marco's voice called out.
Star and Serena looked up to the top of the loft and saw Marco sitting in a shopping cart with a rocket strapped to it, wearing a sombrero with sparklers on it and a foam finger.
"Ha-ha, watch this. I'm gonna..."Marco stammered and started to panic. "I can't do this."
Marco tried to get out of the cart, but it takes off causing him to scream.
Star and Serena watched in shock as fireworks light up the room before a sword sticks into the floor.
Marco rides a rush of water down a flight of circular steps and slides next to Star's bed.
The Diaz boy spits a lit sparkler out of his mouth.
"Ta-da!"Marco muttered in pain.
"Ugh!"Star scowled.
Star laid back in bed as Serena walked over to Marco.
"Diaz, you're actions aren't working on Star."Serena whispered harshly.
"Hey, I'm the guy with the plan."Marco assured. "I know what I'm doing."
"I am sure you are, but Star needs right now is some advice from another girl an it will be the end of this."Serena exclaimed.
Serena walked back to Star as Marco stood up and found Star's wand on the table.
"Hey Star, my mum works in the best cafe in Echo Creek called 'Lotte's Cafe'."Serena admitted with a smile. "And since she's the owner, we can eat beignets and king cakes as much as we want."
"Really?"Star said in surprise.
"Yep."Serena agreed with a small grin. "And the best part is we don't need to pay for anything."
Marco tied the wand to the end of a fishing line and opened a portal with Star's dimensional scissors to drag the two headed minion out from Ludo's place.
"Oh, Star!"Marco called out.
However, Ludo and the rest of his monsters showed up causing the three young teenagers to be involved in another fight with them.
Marco, Star and Serena ran from Ludo's monsters.
"Cupcake blast!"Star chanted.
Star fired upon the monsters with cupcake projectiles and one of the monsters cuts off the head of a coyote sculpture.
Star, Marco and Serena ran into a backyard shed as Ludo and his monsters followed after them.
"We've got them cornered!"Ludo cackled.
Ludo's army run toward the shed.
Star used her wand to brighten the shed as Marco locked the door and Serena used her to ring to create a chain around it as the monsters try to break it down.
"How could I have been so stupid?"Marco murmured in regret.
"Well, if you only just listened to what I said, none of this would've happened."Serena retorted with a small glare.
Marco boarded up the door with buckets of paint as monsters pound on the door.
The Diaz boy went to retrieve a skull-shaped bust on a shelf.
"Marco, what the heck is going on?"Star asked.
"Uh...this may be all my fault."Marco admitted.
"What?!"Star scowled. "What did you..."
Star noticed a three-eyed monster looking inside through the open window blinds and she then closed it.
"What did you do?"Star asked.
"Um..."Marco started.
Marco falls off the shelf and hands the skull bust to Star.
"Hold this."Marco instructed. "Uh, we're gonna need to build some armour."
Serena began to place more stuff over the door and windows to prevent the monsters from going inside in any part of the shed.
Marco puts on a protective mask and looked around for his father's blowtorch.
"Okay."Marco said. "Where does Dad keep his blowtorch?"
The monsters outside shake the shed and the blowtorch falls into Marco's hand.
"Heh-heh!"Marco remarked. "There it is!"
Marco puts the mask down and turns the blowtorch on.
"Marco!"Star snapped irritatedly. "Marco Diaz!"
"Marco!"Serena retorted.
Marco lifted up the mask and turns to face the two girls.
Star dropped the skull bust on the floor.
"What...is going... on?"Star demanded.
"Look, do you remember when I was having that really bad day?"Marco asked.
"Which one?"Serena questioned.
Marco frowned. "You know what I mean, Serena."
Flashback…
Marco was trying to catch up with a moving school bus.
"Wait!"Marco protested while pounding on the bus. "Stop!"
Inside the bus, Star opened a window.
"Look at you, jogging to school."Star sneered. "In the zone."
"I'm trying...to catch...the bus!"Marco panted.
"Got to keep your focus."Star remarked. "I get it. Stay in that zone."
Star closed her window as Serena opened the one next to her cousin's.
"Hey, Serena!"Marco shouted. "A little help here!"
"Nah."Serena answered bluntly and then smirked. "But watch out for the sign."
Serena closed her window as Marco became irritated at the orange haired girl's refusal.
"Seriously?!"Marco snapped.
The bus suddenly comes to a stop and Marco runs into the bus's Stop Sign.
Marco grunted and falls on the ground before the bus driver opened the door.
"Who punched by bus?"the bus driver demanded. "Who does that? Bus never did nothing to you."
"Ow..."Marco whined.
Marco sits up, only for the bus door to close on his hood and the vehicle started moving again to pull him along.
"Whoa!"Marco shouted.
As Marco jumped over a speed bump, his hoodie rips and he crashed into a pile of garbage.
Marco emerges from the garbage with a black eye while groaning in pain.
A guy on a bicycle rides up next to him before he started laughing at Marco's exposed shirt.
The shirt depicts Marco kissing a ninja with the caption 'I KISSED A NINJA AT KARATEKON 2012'.
"You kissed a ninja!"the guy laughed.
Marco covered his shirt with a newspaper and runs away.
The guy on the bike suddenly stopped laughing and rides away off.
Marco runs up to the school and opened his black eye.
"You have got to be kidding me."Marco said in disbelief.
A sign outside Echo Creek Academy reads "PICTURE DAY!"
"School picture day?!"Marco panicked.
A female student appeared in front of Marco with a camera.
"Smile!"the female student giggled.
The female student takes a picture of Marco as he made a silly face.
"I wanna go home."Marco groaned and covered his face in embarrassment.
Jeremy Birnbaum appeared behind Marco.
"Well, well, well."Jeremy sneered. "Marco Diaz."
"Not today, Jeremy."Marco said with a glare.
Marco began to walk away with Jeremy following right next to him.
"I came to give you a black eye for picture day, but apparently, there's no need."Jeremy admitted.
"I said not today!"Marco snapped in annoyance.
Marco stomped his foot down, breaking Jackie's skateboard in half.
"Marco...you broke my...skateboard."Jackie said with a shocked face.
Marco became guilty as Jeremy laughed at him.
"Ooo-hoo-hoo!"Jeremy cooed.
"Jackie, I..."Marco started.
"It's fine, Marco."Jackie assured simply. "I'll just live with it."
Jackie rolled on half of her skateboard as Jeremy smirked evilly at Marco's misfortune.
"I think my work here is done."Jeremy declared.
At the Diaz Household's Shed…
Star puts the skull bust in a vise as Serena folded her arms.
"You let that puny brat Jeremy get away with that?"Serena said in disapproval. "Addison could easily beat him up."
"I'm sorry you had a bad day, Marco, but what does that have to do with right now?"Star asked.
Marco started sawing the skull bust in half.
"I'm getting to that."Marco declared.
Man Arm's arm suddenly crashed through the wall to paw at the air trying to grab Star, Serena or Marco.
Marco placed the skull bust within Man Arm's reach and Man Arm grabbed the bust and breaks off the top half.
"Thank you!"Marco thanked.
Marco boarded up the hole in the wall with a painting.
"I was so bummed out…"Marco continued. "But you did everything you could to cheer me up."
Flashback…
Marco was on the living room couch looking depressed as Star appeared from behind the couch wearing a large moustache.
The blonde haired girl made funny faces while wearing the moustache but Marco didn't laugh.
Star then juggled the laser puppies to make it look funny and Marco still didn't laugh.
For her next act, Star removed the hat she was wearing and pulled a large fish out of it.
"Ta-da!"Star laughed.
However, the fish swallowed Star's head causing the Mewni princess to give muffle screams and run around the room.
Star ended up tripping and the fish swallowed her whole.
Marco burst out laughing causing Star to laugh at her act.
"I'm in a fish!"Star laughed.
Back in the Diaz Household's Shed…
"And then, you met Oskar."Marco admitted.
Serena shivered in fear as she remembered the horrible shrieks from Oskar's guitar while Star was busy daydreaming and biting the head of her wand.
"Star?"Serena said in confusion.
Serena used her ring to create a dream cloud that appeared above Star's head which showed her cousin with Oskar flying snail hoping on and flying towards the puppy drool pools with mermaids and seeing centaurs pulling candy sleighs.
"Ah, ah, ah, ah. My car is a flying snail. Let's ride him far away, yeah."Oskar sang. "To mermaid pools filled with puppies' drool. And centaurs pulling candy sleighs. Ah, ah, ah, ah."
"Eesh!"Serena said in shock.
Serena quickly made the dream cloud disappear as Marco splattered a wall with red paint.
"Star!"Marco called out, glancing at the blonde haired girl. "Can you please keep your fantasies out of my flashback?"
"Almost done."Star instructed.
Marco placed a hockey mask on Serena's face before holding up a circular slide rule.
"I couldn't wait to talk to him."Star sighed dreamily.
"But even after giving him your number, he still hasn't called you."Serena reminded with a frown.
Star looked down sadly as Marco gave her a circular slide rule as a protective mask.
"I guess I'm just not cool enough for a guy with a record."Star said in shame.
"Are you kidding?"Marco commented. "You are the coolest girl I know."
"And you could do way better than Oskar."Serena added.
Star smiled at Marco and Serena.
The shed shook violently again and Star falls over onto the floor while everything on the shelves crashes.
"Anyway, you were so sad."Marco explained. "It was my turn to cheer you up. And that's when I realised nothing makes you happier than when you're Narwhal Blasting a monster. So I tried to lure one with your wand."
"So you brought these monsters here to cheer me up?"Star asked.
"Yeah...I just didn't expect so many."Marco chuckled nervously.
Serena frowned. "I did tell you to wait but you didn't listen."
"I learned from my mistake."Marco replied.
Marco puts buckets on Star and Serena's heads, completing their armour uniforms.
"But don't worry."Marco assured strongly. "This armor will hold them off."
Marco and Star are dressed in hand made battle armor just like Marco was.
The shed's roof was suddenly ripped away and Man Arm's arm reaches inside to grab Marco.
"Marco/Diaz!"Star and Serena shouted in unison.
Marco screamed in terror as Star and Serena went out of the broken shed to confront the monsters.
Man Arm holds Marco in one hand while Ludo and his army surrounded him.
"Give it up, Star Butterfly!"Ludo sneered. "You're outmatched!"
"Ludo, what's with all these new monsters?"Star questioned.
"What?"Ludo said in confusion. "These are all the same monsters I always bring."
"Mmm, I don't know."Star disagreed.
"You totally brought new guys in the game."Serena complemented.
"I've never seen this dude in my life."Marco admitted while pointing at Man Arm.
"You mean you've never met Man Arm?"Ludo asked.
Man Arm turned to the left to reveal his human-like left arm.
"Hey."Man Arm greeted with a wave.
"Surely you know Spikeballs."Ludo suggested.
"Well, we were never formally introduced."Spikeballs admitted.
Spikeballs walked up to Marco and shook his hand.
"Hi, I'm Spikeballs."Spikeballs greeted. "I'm usually in the back."
"Now that you all know each other..."Ludo chuckled and became serious again. "Get the wand!"
Ludo's monsters charged in to attack Star and take her wand away.
Star blasted Man Arm with Rainbow Fist Punch causing him to drop Marco as Serena whacked Spikeballs away with an electric-like whip.
Star, Marco and Serena team up to fight against the monsters.
Star jumped high into the air to chant her next spell.
"Honeybee Tornado Swarm!"Star chanted.
Star swarmed the monsters with bees and pollen.
Most of the monsters get covered in bee stings, but a flower monster appeared to enjoy it.
"Ribbon Strawberry Surprise!"Serena chanted.
Serena's ring blasted the other monsters with strawberry coloured energy blasts.
"You two were right, Marco and Rena! I'm totally cheered up!"Star remarked and blasted Big Chicken. "I don't even care if Oskar calls!"
Marco's ringtone suddenly went on, distracting everyone.
"Space unicorn, soaring through the stars."Marco's Ringtone sand. "Delivering the rainbows all around the world..."
"Ugh, what is that terrible ringtone?"Ludo asked.
"It's supposed to be ironic!"Marco complained.
Serena covered her mouth to mute her laughter as Star looked at the phone and gasped excitedly.
"It's Oskar!"Star squealed.
"Well, talk to him!"Marco muttered while one of the monsters trapped him in a headlock.
"Oh, right-right-right-right-right!"Star replied and answered on the phone. "Hello?"
"Hi, I'm calling this phone number on my phone?"Oskar asked.
"Thank you for calling."Star thanked. "No, I mean—Hiiii."
"Hi."Oskar greeted.
"So what are you..."Star and Oskar said in unison.
Serena blasted Three Eyed Potato Baby away causing Star to duck down from being hit.
"Oh, I-I-I'm sorry, I interrupted you."Star apologised.
Bearicorn roared loudly in Star's ear causing her to slowly turn to him, appalled.
"Ugh!"Star said in disgust and spoke to Oskar. "Oskar, can you hold on for, like, one second?"
Star looked at the monsters with an enraged look.
"HEY!"Star yelled out in anger. "I AM ON THE PHONE! YOU MONSTERS ARE SO RUDE!"
Ludo's monsters look at Star with surprised expressions.
"Syrup Tsunami Shockwave!"Star chanted.
Star washed Ludo and his minions away with a tsunami of waffles, pancakes and maple syrup.
Serena stared at the syrup on her body in disgust as Marco ripped away the waffle that was on his face.
"Yuck."Serena muttered in distaste.
With all the monsters beaten, Star smiled and goes back to talking to Oskar.
"Sorry about that."Star apologised and giggled. "Cool."
"Cool."Oskar said.
"Cool."Star repeated. "Okay, bye. I like your phone voice."
Star ended the call and sighed dreamily.
The two-headed minion was seen stuck to the ground, a crocodile minion was stuck to a cactus and a giraffe minion's head was stuck to his own back.
"Sticky."Two-headed minion grunted. "All sticky."
Marco and Serena walked up to Star while being covered in the sticky substance.
"Mmm, thanks, Marco and Rena. You did know just how to cheer me up."Star giggled. "And Oskar called anyway! Hugs!"
Star hugged her two friends, only to get stuck to them because of the maple syrup.
"Blecch."Star muttered in disgust.
The bicycle guy from earlier rode up next to the three young teenagers and laughed at them.
He suddenly stopped laughing and rode away causing Marco, Star and Serena to look at the camera with confused expressions.
