The next day Olivia woke up alone and in pain, along with a few missed Discord messages. Groaning as she sat up, she looked at the bright screen through squinted eyes.
Tree: Hey, everyone's going to the park at noon, inviting you
Tree: Are you going to be there?
Tree: ?
Tree: Is everything ok?
Tree: Fine, whatever...
"Shit," hissed Olivia as she looked at the time. It was 3 in the afternoon. Pulling herself up and noticing the mess in her bathroom, she sighed to herself in resignation.
The pink phone buzzed with another Discord message just as she started moving to clean the chaos.
Surprised at whose name popped up with the red bubble, she clicked on it immediately. Her stomach fluttered at the message.
Hawk: Party at the canyon. 6pm
Looking at herself through the broken mirror, she saw a mess. Fists clenched, she moved towards her closet and pulled out articles of clothing she never thought she'd wear.
'Fine. If Eli can flip the script, so can I.'
...
It was 6:30 pm, and Hawk was enjoying the energy of those around him. He drank a beer and smirked at one of his classmates' stories about some blonde chick and the school locker room. Looking away to take a sip of his beer, he made eye contact with Moon, who had just landed at the party.
Smirking more at the babe, the mohawk teen gave her a nod and watched with glee as the brunette made her way down to him.
Demetri looked at his friend with disgust as Eli and Moon wasted no time getting to know each other. Rolling his eyes, he looked around for his currently only sane friend, wishing for her presence. Pulling out his phone, Demetri texted his brunette best friend.
Tree: Are you coming tonight?
Hobbit: Ye ye, pulling up in a sec
With a sigh of relief, he saw the headlights of the black Honda Civic and walked over. Looking out at the party, he helped his friend open the door, "thank God you're here. For one, I was distraught. You never answered my texts last night or this morning."
Hearing the door shut behind him, the black hair boy started to turn around. "For two, being left alone at a party with no one to talk to really sucks." Demetri took a sip from his drink only to choke on the liquid when he saw his friend of the opposite sex.
Eyebrow raised, the young girl switched out her sunglasses with her standard glasses, "what's wrong, Everest? Cat got your tongue?"
Demetri looked her up and down, "You're wearing a skirt." He said factually before his eyes landed on the scar on her arm, "and short sleeves." Olivia took a glance at the scar and shrugged, wiggling her arm.
"Yeah, the doctor said the scar needs air to help it heal, or whatever," she glanced around the party. "So, what'd I miss?"
Demetri allowed himself a moment to take in his friend before accepting the change. "You know, the bugs are pretty bad right now; short sleeves and a skirt that barely covers your ass is probably not the best decision." The tall boy used his left arm to help the more petite teen down the hill, his drink in his right hand.
"Are you planning on drinking tonight, hobbit?"
Brunette locks shook into her face as she said no.
Angrily, Olivia pushed her hair out of her face, "Okay, I can't do this." Taking the scrunchie off her arm, she shoved her hair into a pile on top of her head. Demetri looked at his friend with amusement.
"Feel better?" Olivia grabbed onto her friend's arm once more with a sigh of content.
"Sometimes I just want to shave it off, y'know? I just spent an hour and a half trying to curl this shit, only to end up putting it all back." Rolling her eyes as she got closer to the icebox, she leaned down to grab some water.
Demetri's eyes widened as her skirt started to go past dangerous territory and stood behind her to prevent any crude eyes...or photographers.
"Jesus Christ, Olivia! I can see your underwear," hissed Demetri, looking anywhere but the girl in front of him. The said girl popped up with a water bottle in hand, face red with embarrassment as she looked around rapidly. "Don't worry, you troll. I don't think anyone saw anything." Clearing his throat awkwardly, he waved to a log nearby.
"Care to sit?"
Taking a sip of water, Olivia nodded. Following her nerdy friend, they sat down together and watched the party.
"So," started the black-haired teen. "Is the look because of Eli?" Olivia took another swig of water as she nodded, "yep."
Demetri nodded along, "yeah, figured." With a roll of his eyes, he let out a groan, "are both of my friends going to die early with their midlife crisis?" Smacking the back of the boy's head with a chuckle, Olivia replied, "it's called a phase, Dumb Tree. Teens go through them; it's normal. Unlike your boring ass."
As she once again raised the bottle to her lips, Demetri pushed the bottle higher, causing the cold water to spill on her face and a small shriek to pass her lips.
...
"You're dead, Dumb-Tree!"
Hawk paused his make-out session with Moon at the familiar shriek to look over her shoulder towards the noise. Seeing Demetri with a pretty girl made him smirk, hoping that his best friend finally flipped his own script. Looking over the babe's figure while Moon spoke with a friend, he noticed an all too familiar scar on the chick's right arm. Ice flooded his veins as he realized who the babe was.
"Hawk?" Moon asked as she looked over her own shoulder to figure out what he was looking at. Her eyes lit up with happiness as she noticed her current make-out partner's best friend chuckling and sitting together. "How sweet! Are Demetri and Olivia dating?" The girl asked kindly, "because their vibes totally fit together."
Hawk rolled his eyes as he made contact with his brunette friend from across the way.
Olivia gave a friendly wave to Eli, who only nodded back. The young girl watched as his eyes returned to Moon and continued his sensual make-out session. Feeling taken aback and a little sick, Olivia turned back to Demetri, who was also staring at his old friend.
"He shaves his head, dyes his hair, and all of a sudden he gets babes galore," Demetri scoffed, taking another sip of his Mr. Pibb. Before he could make another comment, Olivia shoved her keys to the taller friend and walked off.
"I guess you're drinking now?" The black-haired boy called out.
"Fuck yes," the skirt-wearing girl called back as she walked to the drinks. Spotting a bottle of Vodka and a red solo cup, she filled the cup up halfway. Chugging a few gulps of the revolting liquid, she made her way back to Demetri only to be stopped by another friend.
"V? How's it going?" Miguel asked with a small smile. Looking up at her friend, she gave a grin and hugged the boy.
"I'm doing great, Twiggy!" Noticing his searching eyes, she inquired about Samantha.
Shrugging his shoulders, the teen responded with frustration, "I'm not exactly sure. She hasn't answered me at all today; I don't know what I did." Taking another sip of the Vodka, Olivia nodded in understanding.
"I wouldn't worry too much, Miguel. She may have gotten her phone taken away. Stop waiting on someone else and have fun." The petite girl knocked on his shoulder as she walked away. "Go grab a beer or something!"
Olivia continued her trek back to Demetri, only to notice he had changed locations. Now sitting with Eli, she walked over to her friends and plopped down next to her tree-like friend.
Hawk took one glance at his other friend before giving Demitri a pat on the shoulder, "You just gotta live at the moment, man." With a wink at Olivia, he sauntered off to find out where his lip partner went off to.
Nodding to herself, she looked at her black-haired friend, "want to live in the moment and get out of here? I'm over this..."
Demetri looked at the buzzed girl whose keys he held and responded, "I want to try one thing, okay? Think you'll be good to just sit here and... literally do nothing? Talk to no one, look at no one..." He gave her a once over as she gave him a salute, "aye, aye Cap'n."
Closing his eyes and putting sights on a girl nearby, he sent a silent prayer to protect his friend before deciding to live in the moment.
...
Olivia discovered something about herself that night. When she gets drunk, she doesn't blab to everyone, make embarrassing dances, or kiss anyone on sight. No, she's a sleepy drunk. After watching her friend go, it took barely a minute for her to lead against the log behind her and go to sleep.
Eventually, the sleeping beauty woke up blearily to shouts, a gray jacket over her body. Taking off her glasses, she wiped them off with the coat and clumsily stood up from the sand.
Demetri made his way to his friend of the opposite sex, helping her up during the commotion of Miguel punching his girlfriend. 'Well, ex-girlfriend now,' he suspects. "Come on, hobbit. Let's get you home." Nodding in agreement, she put the jacket on automatically, not used to her arms being seen by people.
"I don't...I don't know what happened, but I'm sure...sure I'll hear about it tomorrow." Her words were so slurred that Demetri basically just nodded along to what she said as he shoved her into her own car.
After closing the door, he made eye contact with a now jacketless Eli, who nodded at the car, "she alright?"
Demetri nodded in affirmation, "yeah, I think sleeping beauty is going to just fine. Do you want to ride with us? You can get your jacket back. The guest rooms are open, and her dad is out of town. She can give us a ride home tomorrow, and we can use her Switch."
Hawk hesitated for a moment, in between going home with a potential lay or ensuring the safe arrival of his friend. Taking a glance at the sleeping friend wearing his jacket, he nodded and got into the backseat of the car, "sounds good to me."
Demetri climbed into the front seat, "Thank God, I swear she weighs more than me! And she calls me an orc." The tall boy started the car and continued, "I definitely will need help getting her to bed."
Nodding quietly, Hawk thought about all the memories he had sitting back here and going on adventures with his friends.
...
"Holy shit," Hawk exclaimed as he saw the mess of her bedroom. Mirror glass was everywhere, and the room stunk of Bourbon. The boys had Olivia's arms around their shoulders, and they made their way to the bed in the corner, plopping her down not so gracefully.
"I'll, uh, go get a trash can for when she, y'know." Demetri left the room, and Hawk took a moment to look at the brunette's face.
Even with her eyes closed, he could imagine the hazel eyes underneath and the slightly crooked nose from being broken in between. Grabbing her arm gently, he maneuvered her onto her side so she wouldn't accidentally choke on any vomit. The artificial redhead took a step back and did some snooping.
It wasn't his first time at the Reynolds household, far from it, actually. Hawk just never thought about what was inside the home before. Going over to her computer set up, he saw the picture of her mom. He never got to meet her, only got to deal with the aftermath of her death. Next to that picture was an image of the three of them at the ice rink. A random bystander was taking their photo when a kid zoomed by, causing the trio to fall on their asses.
It ended up being a great photo of them laughing so hard that Olivia needed her inhaler.
He opened the pencil drawer and furrowed his eyebrows at the picture frame face down. Pulling it out, he saw a younger Olivia Reynolds, scar-free next to a redheaded ballerina. They both were grinning. The shorter on her toes put her arm around the redhead who held a bouquet of flowers.
"I got a trash can, water bottle, and pain killers," Hawk quickly shoved the photo in the drawer as Demetri's entry shocked the mohawk-headed boy. Demetri's eyebrows shot up, "kinda creepy there, Eli. Roaming around through a girl's things." The taller teen put everything by her bedside and took another glance at the mess in the bathroom.
"Think she's okay?
"I think that's a stupid question," commented Hawk as he exited the room.
The black-haired boy nodded as he hurried to follow the shorter teen out, "yeah, definitely not okay."
