Midoriya felt his muscles ache as he groaned and his eyes fluttered awake. He looked around for a moment in confusion as he stiffly got back up and pressed his thumb and index to his eyes as he tried to keep his balance.
Where was he again?
Right... He was in an abandoned lab in the middle of the woods. He supposed that he should count himself lucky. While the portal did send him numerous shocks through his system, he didn't feel like there was anything else wrong with him other than the ache in his muscles and the headache going on right now.
He steadied himself against a wall as he removed the hand from his eyes before groggily opening his eyes. He happened to take a glance at his hands doing a double-take on the clothing he was wearing and raising an eyebrow in confusion.
The part of the jumpsuit that covered his hands was now a grey color. But weren't the gloves on his hands black in color? And was he glowing?
He hurried himself to the nearest instrument that showed off his reflection as best as he could, and eventually found a small panel of glass that was laying among a row of beakers and tubes.
His snow-white hair that he saw in the reflection was such a contrast to his usual appearance of green messy curls that he didn't realize that he was looking at himself until he saw the familiar freckled cheeks that were on his cheeks. He was startled a bit before taking a closer look now that he realized what he was looking at. In addition to the change in hair color, he noticed that his eyes were now glowing a bright green. Which admittedly, isn't that much of a difference to his usual emerald eyes now that he thought about it. Yet the changes to his appearance weren't all that was different about him.
The jumpsuit that he wore was now mostly black in color while the parts that covered his hands and feet were now grey, with the 'D' in the middle of his chest turning a bright white. The glowing aura he had on him wasn't just his mind playing tricks on him either, as his entire body had a bit of a glow when he looked at himself closely in the reflection and on his body.
Just what did that machine do to him?
While the room still was covered in dust and webs, the lights were now on for him to get a better view of the surrounding area and equipment. There was a large monitor near the wall that must've turned on when the power was brought back. With numerous folders displayed on the home screen, with a video file separated from the rest that was labeled 'For Midoriya.'
His eyes narrowed in confusion as he clicked the one that had his name listed, with the video having the title of 'Initiation.' The video started with a man with black hair and bright blue eyes sticking his tongue out a bit in concentration as he adjusts the camera before looking at the screen in confusion.
"Hey, is it recording right now?"
Midoriya heard a sigh come from the side that sounded feminine, but was about the same age as the man.
"Seriously Danny? You saved the town how many times and you don't know how to set up a camera?"
The man who Midoriya now knew as Danny looked a bit frustrated as he looked to the side, presumably to whoever just spoke right now.
"Hey! It's not my fault that they decided to upgrade the cameras right when I was about to start filming these!"
"Well for your information, the camera is recording. So you are making a wonderful first impression for your successor right now."
Danny winced a bit before clearing his throat and stepping a bit backward for Midoriya to get a better view of what the person looked like. While the man was dressed a bit casually with just a t-shirt and jeans, he had an aura of seriousness as he corrected himself in the view of the camera.
"So! You are probably wondering what this place is and what happened to you. There are a couple of things that needed to be addressed before we can go into that. The first thing to be addressed is that ghosts do exist."
Midoriya had a feeling that would be the case after seeing the numerous gadgets around the room, but he was still shocked that he was getting confirmation that ghosts were real.
"And don't think these are your typical ghosts like the ones you see in those cheap horror films movies. But we'll get to that later. If the procedure went anything like it went for me, you should now be half ghost."
Midoriya's eyes widened as a white circle appeared from the man's torso that split so that one had moved up to his head while the other moved down to his feet. Changing the man's appearance so that his form was now similar to Midoriya's. Complete with the change in attire and the glowing green eyes with white hair.
"When you change into a ghost, you can do many things like walking through walls."
Midoriya watched as the man walked backwards with a grin on his face before he went through the wall, sticking a hand to wave at him before he walked back towards the center and into full view once more.
"Turning invisible."
Danny's presence seemingly vanished from thin air on camera, with no sign of movement being made as he did so before he appeared back on screen.
"And fly."
Jumping into the air, Danny started to hover a bit off the ground as his legs turned into a wispy tail as he moved effortlessly around the room.
"And that's only the beginning. There's a whole lot more that you could do, but I think you should just handle the basics first."
Needless to say, Midoriya was in awe of the number of abilities that were packed into the man in front of him. Quirks were limited to the human body so that people could usually only use one type of ability at a time, with the occasional person being able to have a dual-type quirk of some sort. Yet Danny was able to showcase 3 different abilities at a time, with more being unseen for the time being.
Danny's face looked a bit embarrassed as he looked off to the side.
"Admittedly, I was a bit selfish in the use of my powers when I had them."
"You got that right.", the voice from earlier said in amusement.
Danny sent an unimpressed stare off towards the voice before he refocused his gaze towards Midoriya.
"At first, I was worried about the kind of person that would inherit my powers and family's inventions. They mean a lot to me, and they helped me more times than I could count whenever I was out fighting ghosts."
Midoriya blinked at the statement, finding the phrase odd. Fighting... Ghosts?
"But then a friend of mine has told me about you: Izuku Midoriya. About the kind of person that you when he told me that you would be my successor."
The green-haired teen gasped as he heard the man say his name and the offer. Looking at the glowing green eyes that were much like his own as Danny's seemed to never leave Midoriya's. A successor? A successor for what?
"He told me how selfless and heroic of a person you are. Someone who always wanted to help others, no matter how small the act was."
The boy's eyes continued to widen as he listened to the man on the screen. He couldn't be saying what he thought he was saying, right?
"Someone who stood up for those in need, and always had the best intentions for others."
Midoriya started to tear up as Danny continued, his eyes never leaving the freckled teen for a single moment.
"Someone who, no matter how bad the odds were stacked against him, never stopped moving if it meant saving someone who was in danger."
'That's not me', Midoriya tried to push such praise away from him as best he could with very little success.
"Someone with the heart of a hero."
Midoriya finally let the dam loose, clutching his shirt as a flow of tears started to flow from his eyes. Finally hearing the words he always wanted to hear, even if it came from someone behind a screen. He was kind of glad that no one was around to see the state that the words left him. With him needing several minutes to get his act together before he could watch the rest of the video.
After finally calming down a bit and going back to where he left off, he saw that the man was still looking at him with a stern yet, sympathetic expression.
"Now, I'm not going to force you to take this offer if you really don't want it. There's a way for you to remove your powers in one of the videos I got stashed on the computer somewhere, but I think you are my best bet when it comes to stopping ghosts from harming people."
Midoriya paused the video and looked down a bit in thought as he took in the man's offer. He said he wasn't going to be a hero anymore, even changing his career pathway earlier that day. And yet, this Danny seemed to trust him for some job that involved stopping ghosts of some kind from others. Even going so far as to give him powers and inventions to assist in whatever job that he needed him for.
He remembered the words his mother said to him when he didn't receive his quirk. The words that All Might said to him when they were on that rooftop.
Well... he now had powers. An opportunity to use said powers for the greater good. While he didn't really know the threats that he had to face, he wasn't just going to sit by and let people get hurt.
His eyes steeled with resolve as he continued to play the video, letting Danny talk to him once more.
"If you continue to do this, I should warn you about some things about your powers."
Midoriya stiffened as he heard this, worried about what kind of warnings may be included in this offer.
"I don't know how much time will have passed before you come upon this video, but you should know that these powers aren't through conventional means. So for the time being, you should only tell those that you absolutely trust with knowledge of your powers. That's how it was for me until I saved the entire planet."
Midoriya blinked at the statement, momentarily stunned about that casual drop of admittance from the man about saving the entire earth. Danny blinked as well, before turning to the side of the speaker in slight excitement.
"Hey Sam, how cool would it be if they were still talking about that."
Midoriya got the name of the apparent speaker who was off to the side, as she answered back in slight amusement.
"Pretty cool, but aren't you supposed to be doing something right now?"
Danny chuckled sheepishly as he faced back towards the camera again.
"So that's the offer. If you're up to it, there will be numerous photos and videos explaining the inventions that are laid around you and the type of enemies that you are going to be facing."
Danny gave a wide smile before he exclaimed...
"That's all for now! This has been your first step at being the new Phantom."
The video finally stopped as the video froze on his supposed predecessor, letting Midoriya take in the information that he just received.
Based on the way he spoke about his actions and attitude, Midoriya can conclude that he was a hero of some kind. Yet how come that he never heard of him before? Danny did say that he didn't know how long time has passed in the video, but how long exactly was that?
Exiting the tab with the video playing and going through the clip's details and information, he gasped when he saw the date.
This... this was before the emergence of quirks.
Quirks were already a bit of a mystery when it came to the human body, but to find out that this Danny had a kind of power before quirks existed? Maybe that was the reason he was so secretive to others? He shook away those lingering questions as he stepped away from the monitor.
Midoriya looked at his phone to see what time it was and his eyes widened when he saw that it was around 6:30 in the afternoon. In shock at how late he stayed in that lab, he unknowingly dropped his ghost form, turning back into his normal green-haired self. Glancing downwards at himself in confusion before shaking his head, he quickly shut off the monitor and went to turn off the lights as he hurried his way home.
As the sun started to set on the horizon, his mind kept going back to the entire encounter with the lab and the video that he saw.
He didn't know the exact reason why he had powers after going through the portal, but he knew that what he had wasn't a quirk. As he had never heard of the idea of someone giving away a quirk through unconventional means before in all his years of learning about quirks.
From the way Danny spoke about his powers, the boy knew that what he was given was pretty much just the basics of what he could do. Yet that led him to another problem of who should he tell about his powers and of the room, as he remembered what he had said during the video.
'...these powers aren't through conventional means. So for the time being, you should only tell those that you absolutely trust with knowledge of your powers.'
As sad as it was, there wasn't anyone that Midoriya trusted right now to share the information of his powers and the location of the secret lab at the moment. Suddenly showing off that he has powers after a decade of being quirkless would certainly raise suspicion from others, and would probably force his mother to send him to the nearest quirk specialist the moment he told her about it. And even if he could, the powers varied way too much for it to just be explained away as a single quirk. So for the time being, he would have to keep these things to himself.
After nearly half an hour of running his way out of the woods and towards his home, he was finally able to make it back to his apartment
"Izuku! Do you know what time it is!?"
"I-I'm sorry Mom. I just got caught up with something.", he tried to brush it off as he passed her from the doorway, but her mother grabbed him by the wrist to stop him from continuing on.
"Izuku... Please... Tell me what is going on with you. You haven't been the same since yesterday."
The boy bit the bottom of his lip as he looked away from his mother uncomfortably. There were a lot of things that he refused to share with her whenever he was out and about, whether it be the bullying that went on during school or as of recently, his thoughts about what he should do in the future. This whole ghost business seemed just like another thing that he was going to keep from her.
Yet when he looked back at her eyes for just a moment, he knew he couldn't do that to her right now. He knew she was just worried about him, especially after his encounter with a villain yesterday (Twice he might add, another thing he was keeping from her). Midoriya knew that he was going to have to give her something. He settled on telling her about his decision about moving to general studies.
"I...", he bit his lip as he looked away from her, unable to stop a few tears from brimming the corners of his eyes, "I'm not going to go to the hero course. I'm going to go to UA's general studies."
Inko's eyes glimmered with a bit of tears as well, showing a bit of surprise before nodding along. "I figured as much.", she smiled sadly at her son, "I went to check in your room earlier and saw that you removed most of your All Might stuff in the room."
Midoriya winced a bit in guilt as he looked away before his mother rubbed his back in a soothing motion. "Just know that whatever you decide to do, I will always be there for you."
Midoriya just nodded, his eyes still not looking at his mother as they stood there in silence. Before the green-haired boy awkwardly separated from his mother's grasps and headed towards his room and slowly shut the door behind him.
Inko let out a heavy sigh after the door shut, moving to put the food she had on the stove into plastic containers for tomorrow. While she was guilty at being a bit happy that her son made the decision on his own to not join the hero course, there was another part of her that was worried about Izuku's state of mind going forward. With her finally realizing what the dull look in his eyes was about yesterday at dinner.
She knew that she never really supported her son's dreams all this time, yet somehow it seemed like yesterday was the final straw for Izuku. Even going so far as to remove most of his All Might merch from his room. She said that she would always be there for him no matter what he decided to do, but now she wondered if that was really true. If he had somehow joined the hero course without a quirk, would she be able to stand aside knowing her son was in a dangerous profession?
Midoriya sighed as he leaned against his door after entering his room, still feeling unnerved by the bare walls and shelves that now filled his room. He still didn't know what to think of his new condition and powers at the moment, wanting nothing more but to figure out what exactly happened to him when he entered that lab.
He looked at his hands while he concentrated on turning back into that ghost form he saw Danny turn into. Looking deep within himself, he searched for the odd familiar sensation he felt earlier when he first deactivated his powers. It was sort of difficult looking for something so brand new, but after a few minutes of concentrating he felt the familiar sensation wash over him. As he saw a white circle appeared from his torso that split so that one had moved up to his head while the other moved down to his feet.
Looking at his new form in slight surprise, he couldn't help but let out a small smile of having been able to figure out this aspect of his newfound power on his own. Before searching once more for the feeling and finding it much faster than the first attempt as he changed back to his normal form.
While he was glad to be able to figure out how to change his appearance, he still didn't know how to activate any of the other abilities Danny showed him from the video. He decided to hold off any other tests involving his powers until he made it back to the lab to watch some of the videos left behind for him. And maybe figure out who was the man known as Danny Phantom and what happened to him.
As he got ready for bed, he felt oddly excited about what the day will bring to him tomorrow.
(Afternoon the next day)
Midoriya tapped his desk nervously while sitting at his desk in the last class for the day. Anxious to get back to the lab he found to watch the rest of the clips that explained his powers. So far, he felt he was doing pretty good at keeping the powers at bay for the time being.
He yelped as his right hand turned intangible that made him fall off his desk onto the floor, making all the other students in class turn toward him.
…
Ok, so he was pretty bad. But that's why he wanted to get back to the lab as fast as possible to watch the rest of the videos explaining his powers.
The class snickered at his fall while Bakugo only rolled his eyes in annoyance at the action, with the teacher sighing in exasperation.
"Midoriya, I know that you changed to the general studies course, but it is still UA. Please try to pay attention."
The red-faced boy awkwardly apologized as he made his way back towards his desk, used to the amused stares and snickered that lingered as he did so. Thankfully it was soon after that the bell finally rang, and didn't wait to bolt out of there as fast as he could after shoving all of his things into his backpack. While the act confused a bunch of the students, they didn't make any move to stop him as he rushed out of the school building with an excited smile on his face.
Running into the woods on the path he saw from yesterday and moving through the thick underbrush as fast as he could before the familiar grey bunker came into view once more, he entered through the door. Seeing the dust-covered room he saw yesterday filled him with an odd sense of joy, though he should really try to clean it up eventually.
Making it back towards the giant monitor, he powered on the monitor and began looking for something involving anything about his new powers. for some of the files and found a folder that was filled with videos containing clips of moves and abilities. Moving back out of the folder, he saw another two that were also in the computer. One was filled with information and clips about the inventions and their uses while the other had the title of 'Ghosts', with more videos and information about them.
While he was curious about what kind of things the other two folders had, Midoriya knew the first thing that he had to do was get a hold of his new powers. He was lucky that no one questioned his sudden shifts of intangibility during school, but knew that it was only a matter of time before he got caught.
Clicking back out of the folder with the ghosts, he went back towards the files with the abilities listed and hovered the mouse over the videos that Danny described to him yesterday. He told his mom that he was going to stay out a bit late to prevent another mishap like yesterday, but he knew he only had time to focus on two abilities before he had to head back home.
Intangibility is definitely one that he knew would have to be worked on today if only to prevent any more mishaps like today in class from happening. Yet that still left one option available to him before he had to head home. Clicking on the video to start it off, he set his backpack down to the side and stepped away from the desk a bit to turn into his new ghost form. With a white circle appearing from his torso that split so that one had moved up to his head while the other moved down to his feet, turning him into a ghost.
The video finally started with Danny already in his ghost form as he looked towards the camera.
"Alright, Intangibility. A useful power to use whenever you are cornered and are in a jam, need to travel through a building as fast as you can or to get into somewhere secured. Though it was a bit tricky to use whenever I first started out."
Midoriya watched as Danny started to get closer to a wall that was behind him and calmly walked through it without any problems, before reappearing from the floor with a smile.
"While this move might not seem all that much on his own, it is an extremely important one to master, especially if you start using it along with flight at the same time."
Midoriya tried to feel that sensation as he headed towards the nearest wall to try it out, felt the same odd sensation wash over him for a split second. While the feeling of his body going intangible was different, it felt oddly natural. The teen gained an eager smile on his face and moved forward.
Only to walk face-first into the wall.
He hissed in pain as he clutched his nose in confusion. While he managed to get a vague feeling of that power, it seemed to work a bit differently than the one he used to change into his ghost form. While the one to change forms seemed to function like an on and off switch, this one seemed to need much more concentration to maintain.
Taking a deep breath, he searched again for the feeling once more and felt something change in his body when he did so. He tried to hold onto that feeling as he walked towards the wall again, and closed his eyes as he warily stuck a hand out into the building.
After slowly opening his eyes, he saw that a hand was now going through the wall just like Danny said, with his hand and forearm being behind the wall with it stopping at the elbow. Laughing in amusement, he then stuck his head through the wall as well, being able to see the numerous trees that were littered throughout the forest.
Stepping back and away from the wall, he looked at his hands in amazement. While he got it down in his second attempt, he knew that he was going to need a lot more practice. Yet, he couldn't help but feel shocked at the new skill that he learned. After searching for that feeling again, he sent a hand down onto a nearby table with beakers and was happy to find that his hand now when through the table just like it had done with the wall.
Looking around the lab, he looked for other things that he could try his phasing and spent nearly an hour going through various objects. The most interesting one was finally being able to look at the inside of the RV. Though he wondered if he would ever get the chance to use it.
Satisfied with his progress in intangibility, he made his way back towards the computer and looked back over the videos to see what else he could learn before he had to head back home. Remembering the abilities that Danny showed him yesterday and looking at the abilities listed on the screen, he was left with either working with flight or invisibility.
While invisibility was admittedly a very cool power, the thought of him being able to fly in the air like a hero was just too exciting of an idea to pass up. Quickly finding and starting the clip to play as he watched Danny once again in the middle of a room.
"Flying is your main mode of transportation, able to reach speeds of up to 112 miles per hour if you really go for it. Though a few things are needed to be noted when starting. First things firsts, balance."
Midoriya watched as Danny started hovering above the ground with ease, moving side to side to demonstrate the maneuverability. Though Midoriya did a double-take when he noticed that the man's legs had turned into a wispy trail that followed after him as he moved in the air on the screen.
"Balance and sense of direction are important, as you may start coming up and down from random places if things start getting really crazy in battle. You might want to get a clear open area when starting to fly to avoid bumping into things on your first try."
Danny's face softened as he floated back down and looked towards the screen, presumably Midoriya's eyes.
"I'm sorry that I can't be there with you to help you figure it out. While all of this may seem overwhelming, I have faith that you will be able to figure it out."
Midoriya felt a small smile grow on his face at hearing Danny's support for him and steeled himself to figure how to fly.
Flying was a move that many heroes could do, though that was usually through the use of their quirks or support gear. Yet, it seemed to be a natural process with being a half-ghost. Midoriya smiled as he started to hover a bit off the ground, only for it to fall off his face as his body started turning so that he was upside down.
Canceling the action, he landed with a thud on the floor as he groaned and stood back up, ready to try it again. Hovering once more, his arms flailed at his sides as he tried to keep himself aligned upright the best he could.
He managed to do it right this time but wasn't paying attention to how high he was flying upwards and accidentally hit his head against the ceiling.
Clutching his head to calm the slight throb against his head, he focused on getting himself back down towards the ground. This was going to be more difficult than he thought, as people with quirks had nearly a decade to practice their abilities while he was starting from scratch. Yet it wasn't going to deter him from keep trying, hovering against the ground once more.
He spent a lot of time after that trying to get the flight aspect of his powers under wraps, after numerous times he's glad to say the practice paid off. With him now being able to hover with minimal difficulties and slight movement, though the movement was somewhat limited as he was only doing it in the lab.
Yet now it was time for him to get home, as he paused before closing the entrance to the lab and saw the room and the swirling green portal. He wondered what was on the other side of that, the machine that was the cause of his powers in the first place. Though that had to be found out at a later time, as he didn't want to keep his mother waiting any longer.
His mother greeted him as walked in with only a slight bit of worry, but that was tame compared to yesterday as he already told her that he was going to be staying out. After a peaceful dinner with only a bit of prodding from his mother, it was time for the two to go to bed. Though Midoriya had other plans.
The boy waited in his bed for his mother to fall asleep, for the chance to try out some of his new powers. While he didn't like the idea of sneaking out, he felt like he didn't have any other option when it came to trying out the flight powers to their fullest potential.
During the day, he was either always around his mother or his classmates from school, with only a few hours after class spent looking through the videos Danny left behind. Not leaving him much time to practice during the week.
After 2 restless hours of waiting, he crept out of his bed as softly as he could and snuck over to his mother's room before pressing an ear against her door. He sighed softly in relief after he was able to hear the soft snoring of his mother before slowly backing away from the door.
Searching into his ghost form, he went towards the front door trying to phase out of it only running face-first into it. Making him grumble in slight annoyance as he stilled himself and listened for any sign of his mother waking up. After hearing nothing in the direction of her room, he sighed again as he faced towards the door and tried to phase through it once more.
Phasing through the door properly this time, he glanced around making sure the coast was clear before going completely through the door and out of his apartment. Making his way towards the balcony that was directly in front of his home.
He questioned himself and his decisions as he looked down below, and felt his hands clench the railing as he remembered the words Bakugo said to him the day the slime villain attacked. The words that All Might said to him when he asked him about being a hero on that roof.
Taking a shuddering breath, he forced those thoughts out of his head. Things were different now.
There was someone who believed in him. Someone who trusted him enough to leave behind their powers and family's inventions for him to use. Someone who believed that he could be a hero, albeit in a different way.
He slowly climbed over the balcony railing so that he was standing on the very edge. While his heart was pounding in his chest in fear, he was also strangely excited about trying out the flight aspect of his powers for the first time. With him only knowing the hovering aspect of the powers just earlier today.
Hovering slightly away from the railing, he only flailed for a second before he was able to hover without any difficulties. With the first step completed, he took a depth breath again before he shifted his weight forward, propelling himself away from his home and towards the stary night sky.
While he started off slow in the beginning, he slowly started to gain speed as he concentrated on keeping his body aligned so that he wasn't plummeting towards the ground.
Being so high, he got to see the bright lights of the bustling city below. All unaware of the flying half-ghost high above the clouds. Midoriya laughed as he continued to fly into the night sky. The feeling of the wind in his hair and finally having power made his chest fill with glee as he continued to soar.
Was this what it was like to have a quirk? The ability to do the impossible?
He saw many sights that he thought he would never get to see, such as the numerous bright lights of the city below living the busy nightlife. Or the numerous stars that dotted the sky, all shining brightly. He didn't know how long he had been traveling for when he saw a coast on the horizon, with a beach being littered to the brim with high piles of garbage.
The glee and joy he felt as he flew didn't last long as he lost a grip on his powers and changed back to his human form mid-flight and started to fall towards Dagobah beach. Trying to align himself and activate his powers in a panic, he continued to plummet his way towards the dump eventually landing in a pile of soft rubbish and garbage.
The boy laid there on his back staring wide-eyed before letting out a chuckle, his volume increased as his chuckles turned into joyful laughter. With the experience of flight still being fresh on his mind as he continued to lay on the vacant, filthy beach. While he didn't know what lied ahead of him and his role of becoming the next phantom, but he knew that he would be prepared for any challenges that would come his way.
If only he knew how wrong he was at that moment.
(Early the next morning)
Deep in the forest, where the lab was located. A yellow rubber glove emerged from the portal to grasp onto the solid flooring, where an elder woman with green skin and an outfit made for serving food in a cafeteria emerged in confusion.
"Oh dear, I must've taken a wrong turn somewhere. This... This is new."
The entity knew that she was neither in Amity Park nor the Ghost Zone, yet she didn't seem that bothered by that fact as she started to phase out of the building and the woods, before heading towards civilization.
"I wonder what kind of food they serve here. Maybe I should try the nearby school to see what's on the menu."
