Maybe it was time for another move across the country.
Olivia had just gotten an oversized desk and installed a new monitor that sat a long way versus the traditional sideways position. Now she had two main monitors and a third to read her code on. Currently, she was updating her virtual machine and packet scanner that her team developed for the competition a few months ago.
On her desk sat a Cybersecurity textbook opened to network vulnerabilities. Olivia's team was meeting tomorrow night at the library to practice vulnerability repair and it was her turn to create the Virtual Machine for the exercise.
But, she kept getting distracted by a certain spiky-haired boy and his pouty-lipped girlfriend on social media.
At least she got the job.
...
"And I have a 4.0. Counselor Blatt says that I am a shoo-in for Salutatorian if I keep it up!"
The kind redhead in front of her smiled. "Why not Valedictorian?" She joked.
Rubbing the back of her neck sheepishly, "well, that slots most likely going to be taken by my best friend; he's nerdier than I am." She gave the woman a closed-eye smile.
Nodding, the Mrs. Neeley chuckled. "Joking, joking, that is all super impressive, Miss Reynolds." Looking at the hopeful teen in front of her, the redheaded woman leaned forward a bit with a large grin. "Can you start this week?"
Olivia shook her head in affirmation in rapid succession. "O-of course! Uhm, Tuesdays I meet with my Cyber Team, but other than that, I am free to work most days until school starts!"
The redheaded woman stood up and stuck out her hand. "Then, welcome to the team, Miss Reynolds. I'll have Kristen message you about training and scheduling, and hopefully, we will have you behind the counter by Wednesday!"
The brunette was ecstatic at the job. By no means was it technology orientated, but she found herself excited to start building her resume.
"You won't regret it!"
...
Olivia was still giddy at the feeling, immediately texting Demitri.
Hobbit: got the job!
Tree: gg
Tree: does this mean I get free credits?
Hobbit: lol
Tree: I'm srs
Hobbit: hi Sirius, im olive
Rolling her eyes, Olivia finished the Virtual Machine and saved it onto her external drive. The team would be meeting at Fred's house today since the school was closed and Fred's dad had a server they could play with.
Reynolds: Don't forget practice tonight 6pm, bring book and folder
Fred-boy: and a stomach, mom is cooking
Row-boat: ur mom is a saint
Patrick Star: fuk me sideways, i can eat all-day
Fred-boy: we know fatty
Patrick Star: learn to eat, boys. women love a man who can eat
Patrick Star: Right Reynolds?
Olivia decided not to answer the Discord message with a snort, instead getting ready for the night. Packing her laptop and other items in her laptop bag, she heard her phone ding.
Unknown: heyyyy girl, it's Moon!
Unknown: i stole your # from Hawk's phone, haha
Olivia debated answering or not, confused as to why the girl decided to message her. The brunette added the girl to her phone and replied back.
Olivia: Hey, what's up?
Moon: I wanted u to get these pics i took from the beach!
The scarred brunette looked at the photos that came in shock and awe; they made her look...really cute actually. Olivia was surprised that Moon would do that for her.
Olivia: Wow, thanks! These look awesome!
Moon: np! U and Demetri r sooooo cute.
Olivia froze at the message, unsure how to respond. The photos looked really cute, and the two did look like a couple. But she didn't feel that way towards the black-haired boy.
Right?
Olivia: We arent together lol
Moon: oh! I thought u were the way Demetri looks at u was like a movie
With furrowed eyebrows, Olivia tried to see what look Moon was talking about. The pair of friends had been talking about funny memes and the girls he was trying to date. Why would he talk about the girls if he liked her?
Unless he was trying to make her jealous?
Did Demitri have a crush on her, and she didn't know?
Cringing physically, she started to feel bad. What if she was ignoring the feelings of her friend?!
Did she like Demetri?!
Moon: the fair thing is tomorrow n Hawk n demi are going 2 be there. U should come!
Moon: hey! We should get ready together! i would luuuv to dress u up!
Olivia: uh sure, urs or mine?
Moon sent over her address to the young girl and a time to meet.
Moon: c u soon!
Olivia: see you tomorrow
For the rest of the night, Olivia felt significantly off balance.
...
"A-are you sure this is appropriate to wear, Moon" stuttered an uncomfortable Olivia as she attempted to lengthen the shorts the other girl forced on her. "I-I'm not sure if this is, uh, age-appropriate?"
Moon whacked the other girl's hands away from the shorts, "you look beautiful, V! Stop fidgeting and show off, you gorgeous soul!"
Reynolds couldn't help but smile at the kind words. She never expected to be standing next to her school bully, much less getting complimented by the girl. Although, the tight shorts and tiny shirt were way out of her comfort zone.
Demetri had bummed a ride off Olivia to the fair as well, sputtering as he saw what she was wearing. However, after noticing how uncomfortable his friend was, he took off his button-up. He gave it to the brunette without saying anything.
'Does this mean he likes me?!'
Olivia put the shirt on and left it unbuttoned with a grateful smile and a slight blush. She rubbed at her scar, feeling a little naked now that the world displayed imperfection.
"V, if Hawk can be more than his scar, then so can you."
Moon had looked so serious when Olivia tried to explain that she should cover up her scar. Her expression turned sad, and the pouty-lipped beauty apologized for how she treated the younger girl in the past.
"I-I'm so sorry, Olivia, for how I treated you in the past. I-I was so rude, and you never deserved that. Never."
"I-it's cool. You're forgiven. J-just let me wear my converse and not those death traps, deal?"
"Deal!"
The three teens now stood at the performances and ate greasy foods. When Miyagi-Do's turn came up, the petite brunette couldn't help but snort when Moon asked if they would fight.
"Cobra Kai!" The trio whipped their heads around at the battle cry and followed the crowd to the main stage. Olivia only felt mildly sorry for the three in white gis before focusing on the show in front of her. She stared in awe and mild fear as she watched the spiky-haired teen jump and flip.
...
Hawk noticed Demetri's signature shirt over Olivia's shoulders and channeled his anger into the performance. His kiai's became battle cries, and his attacks knocked out the invisible enemies running his way.
With a final cry, he knew what he would do for his bit.
...
Hawk flexed at the front of the stage, enjoying the screams from the crowd, and smirked at no one in particular. Pretending to search out in public for someone, his sights landed on a certain brunette at the front of the crowd. Making eye contact, he pointed at her and motioned her to come here with his finger.
The crowd went wild, but wide hazel eyes crashed into waves of blue. Quickly shaking her head to deny the attention, Olivia tried to flee from the front of the crowd, only to be pushed forward by strangers. The brunette tried to look for Demetri but could not find the friend.
Hawk moved up to the very front of the stage and grabbed the petite teen by the collar of his friend's shirt. He tried not to look at all the skin shown by his former best friend but couldn't help the warmth spreading through his body as he yanked her up onto the stage. Stumbling slightly, Olivia reached out for stability only to be shoved a breaking board.
Understanding what he wanted from her, Olivia attempted to leave the stage only to be stopped by Hawk, who grabbed her wrist and twisted her into his body. The crowd went wild. "Where ya going, princess?"
The whisper in her ear made Olivia shiver as she thought back to the beach day.
"All you gotta do is stand there and look pretty for my friends," the spiky-haired boy continued slowly, bringing his hand to stroke her scar.
"Yeah? And what if I don't want to do that?" Challenged Olivia in a whisper.
With a dark chuckle, Hawk put his lips right up to her ear.
"Oh, trust me, sweetheart. You do want to do that."
With that, Hawk pulled her into position, keeping eye contact. He then looked at the crowd with a smirk and ran to position himself on the other side of the stage.
Olivia was trembling. Was it from public humiliation? The sexual tension? Fear of Karate?
All three, Olivia decided. She tried to look away as Hawk took a running start towards her and the kid next to her. But the way his muscles tightened with each movement and the sweat that left his body left her entranced as she followed every step.
The board broke in half with a loud crack, and she was left in awe.
Hawk went over to the girl and held her right arm up as if she had won a match. He showed her off to the crowd, causing catcalls, whistling, and screams.
"Winner, Olivia Reynolds!"
"That's my girl!"
Olivia felt nauseous as the crowd faded into her brain. Her breath started to quicken, and her vision began to tunnel. Looking at the old friend next to her in panic, she made eye contact.
...
Hawk knew that face.
He knew the signs and could name them off to anyone who asked.
Being friends with Olivia for two years consisted of many sleepovers and marathons, and night terrors and panic attacks. Hawk didn't know why she had panic attacks or needed an inhaler, he just knew that she had gone through some shit that caused her to be this way before she came to California.
He and Demetri were basically trained on how to deal with her asthma and panic attacks.
Hawk knew what to do.
So why did he just push her back into the crowd?
...
"I can't believe he did that to you!" exclaimed Demitri as he threw his hands up in the air. The two were at Olivia's car, who had left her inhaler in the glove box. "H-he knows how serious this is, and he j-just...just shoved you into the crowd!"
Olivia sat with her legs out of the car in the front seat, letting out soft wheezes as she calmed down her breathing. "I-it's fine, Demitri, let it go!"
"Let it go? Are you crazy?! If I hadn't grabbed you-you-you..."
"Get the fuck out of the way, pervert!"
"D-de-demi-"
"Olivia! Where's your inhaler?!"
"C-C...ca...car!"
"Damn it," shouted Demetri in frustration. His friend could have died, and his other friend just pushed her to the side. Weird peacock phase or not, Eli hadn't forgotten about the panic attacks and asthma. He knew what he did was wrong. So why did he do it!?
Standing up, Olivia quickly grabbed her pacing friend's hand and pulled him in front of her, "h-hey, Everest. I'm fine! It worked out, okay?" She smiled a little as she looked up at him.
Their eyes met and softened as they looked at each other.
'Does he really like me? He's so concerned and...'
"I just don't like how he's changing, Hobbit," whispered Demitri in frustration. He rubbed his face with his free hand and sighed. "I don't know what to do."
Nodding in agreement, Olivia regained eye contact, "me neither, Everest."
The two stood together in front of Olivia's Honda Civic, breathing heavily. Looking down at the hand on Demetri's wrist, she decided to make a move. Intertwining their hands, Demetri looked down in confusion.
Olivia took the chance and stood on her tippy toes. She hesitated for a moment before making a move.
And the two kissed.
...
Hawk was making his way to the parking lot in a hurry. He had watched Demetri rush Olivia away from the crowd and wanted to ensure that she was okay.
Was he a dick for what he did?
Probably.
But as he turned the corner and saw the friends in a kiss, he felt his heart skip a beat. The spiky-haired teen turned on his heel with clenched fists and walked away in anger. There were no tears in the teen's eyes.
That wouldn't be badass.
He was a badass.
He didn't wipe his eyes.
He snarled.
