Chapter 2: Misadventures in Diagon Alley
I don't own Digimon or Harry Potter
Harry came sliding out of a fireplace, coming to a stop against a display case, his clothes and cloak covered in soot and ash, and his glasses had broken once again. "Terrific…" he thought. Where was Hermione when he needed her? He needed to ask her to teach him that spell she used last year to fix his glasses.
Using the display case for support, he pulled himself up and noticed he was all alone, and from the looks of it, he was inside a large, dimly lit wizard's shop.
As he looked around the shop, he saw numerous items that would never make it onto the Hogwarts shopping list. Dark and frightening looking masks leered down at him from high upon the walls, human bones littered the counter, something or someone was floating in a large jar of fluorescent green liquid. Through the window he saw a dark, narrow street outside, this was not Diagon Alley. He had to get out of the shop, and fast.
He crept towards the door, but before he could reach it, he saw two people outside. One of them was Draco Malfoy, the last person Harry wanted to meet when he was lost. He quickly found a place to hide, stepping into a large broken cabinet, he pulled the doors too leaving just enough room for him to peer through.
The door to the shop opened, the bell above the door clanged as Malfoy walked into the shop followed by a man who could only be his father. He shared the same eyes as Draco and had long, sleek platinum blonde hair just like his son. He wore elegant and expensive looking black robes; in his hand he held a cane with a serpent's head made of silver.
He strode across the shop to the counter and rang the bell. He then turned and looked at his son. "Touch nothing, Draco." He said softly.
"I thought you were going to buy me a present." His son replied, about to touch a glass eye on one of the displays.
"I said I would buy you a racing broom." His father replied.
"What good is that if I'm not on the House team. Potter got a Nimbus 2000 for his broomstick so he could play for Gryffindor. Special permission from Dumbledore and all that. He's not even that good, it's just because he's famous because of his stupid scar. Everyone's always talking about Perfect Potter…wonderful Potter with his scar and broomstick." Draco spat in disdain.
"You have told me this a dozen times already, Draco." His father said with a small frown aimed at his son. "And let me remind you, it is far from wise to appear less than…prudent of Harry Potter. Not when most of our kind regard him as the hero who made the Dark Lord disappear." He then saw a hunched over man appear behind the counter. "Ah, Mr Borgin." He greeted.
"Mr Malfoy, what a pleasure to see you again." The man said, smoothing his greasy hair with hand. "Delighted. And young Master Malfoy too, charmed. How may I be of assistance? I am glad you came, just today, at a very reasonable price…."
"I'm not here to buy Mr Borgin. But to sell." Mr Malfoy cut the man off before he could try to hustle him.
"Selling, sir?" Mr Borgin asked with a flat tone, his smile dipping.
"Yes. As you are aware, the Ministry is conducting more raids. I have a few…items at home that would embarrass me should the Ministry decide to call." Mr Malfoy said before he pulled out a roll of parchment from his robes and handed it to Mr Borgin.
The man put on a small pair of spectacles and began to read the list. "The Ministry wouldn't dare to trouble you sir, surely." He muttered.
"Not yet. The name Malfoy still commands a certain respect. Yet the Ministry grows evermore troublesome. There are rumours about a new Muggle Protection Act, no doubt that flea ridden muggle loving fool, Arthur Weasley is behind it." Mr Malfoy said.
Harry, who was listening, clenched his fist in anger at the way Draco's father spoke about Ron's father. "I understand sir. Of course. Let me see…" Mr Borgin muttered, going over the list.
"Can I have that!?" Draco called out, pointing to a severed hand on a cushion.
Mr Borgin and Mr Malfoy looked over and Mr Borgin chuckled. "Ah, the Hand of Glory." He said, scurrying over to Draco's side. "Insert a candle and it will give light to only the user, brilliant for thieves and plunderers. Your son has excellent taste, sir."
"I hope my son will amount to more than a common thief." Mr Malfoy said coldly.
"Oh no offence sir, no offence at all." Mr Borgin said hurriedly.
"Though if his school marks don't pick up, that may be all he is fit for." Mr Malfoy said, colder still as he glared at his son.
"It's not my fault. All the teachers have favourites. That Hermione Granger…Daisuke Ainsworth and even that stupid Ron Weasley…." Draco started, trying to defend himself before his father spoke again.
"I would have thought you'd be ashamed that a girl with no wizard family beat you in every exam." Mr Malfoy snapped at his son. "And do not get me started on how you let a Weasley do better than you in an exam."
"Ha." Harry said under his breath, grinning as he saw Draco's face turn bright red, the young boy letting out sputters as he tried to retort to his father's words.
"Ainsworth?" Mr Borgin asked softly, his oily voice thick with emotion. "You had best be careful young Master Malfoy, surely your father has spoken of the old legends concerning those with Ainsworth blood in their veins."
"All superstitious nonsense. That line of magic has long since been spent. The girl is nothing more than the next in a long line of imposters. Now back to my list." Mr Malfoy said quickly, and Mr Borgin nodded.
The two then began haggling on a price for the items Mr Malfoy was selling. Harry noticed Draco inching closer to his hiding place, he watched the young boy examining a length of hangman's rope before reading the card next to an opal necklace, one that was apparently cursed and had killed many muggles already.
"Done. Come, Draco." Mr Malfoy said quickly, and his son walked over to him. "Good day Mr Borgin, I will see you at the manor tomorrow to pick up the goods."
Once the two had left, Mr Borgin growled. "Good day yourself, Mr Malfoy. And if the stories are true, you ain't sold me half of what's hidden inside your manor. And you'd best beware, the stories about the Ainsworth lineage are not to be underestimated." He stormed off to the back of his store and once he was gone, Harry left the cabinet before leaving the shop.
As he walked down the alley, he saw it was lined with shops dedicated to the Dark Arts, across from the shop he had just walked out of, Borgin and Burkes was a shop with several shrunken heads in the window, two shops down he saw a large cage full of giant spiders with glowing red eyes.
As he tried to find his way through the alley, the wizards, and witches there all began watching him with keen eyes. "Lost my sweet?" one witch with missing teeth said in a sickly-sweet voice. "Come, we'll help you find your way back."
"Um…n..no thank you." Harry said, shrugging off her arm.
"Don't worry kid. We'll look after you." A bald wizard said with a hacking cough.
"No, really I'm fine." Harry said as he began to be surrounded.
"Harry!?" a voice from up a flight of stairs boomed, the crowd parted, and Harry looked up, his heart swelling in joy.
"Hagrid!" he shouted to the gamekeeper of Hogwarts in relief.
"What're you doing down there for? Come up here!" Hagrid told him. Harry nodded and rushed through the crowd up to his friend, a few minutes later, the two were walking out of the dark alley into sunlight.
"I was lost…Floo Powder." Harry explained and Hagrid nodded.
"You're lucky I found you. Knockturn Alley, a nasty place. Don't want anyone to see you down there." He said, dusting Harry off with his hand.
"I know that." Harry huffed. "What were you doing down there?"
"I was looking for some flesh-eating slug repellent. They've been ruining the school cabbages." Hagrid answered.
Harry nodded in understanding. "Um, I'm staying with the Weasleys. Could you help me find them?" he then asked.
"Course I can help. But you won't need to look far." Hagrid answered with a chuckle, pointing ahead to a mop of redheads rushing towards them, Mr Weasley, Ron, Fred, George, and Percy.
"Harry, we only thought you had gone one grate too far." Arthur said, panting and wiping sweat from his forehead.
"Where did you come out?" Ron asked him.
"Knockturn Alley." Hagrid grumbled.
"Brilliant." Fred and George said, making their father and Hagrid glare at them.
"We've never been allowed in." Ron muttered to Harry.
"I should ruddy well hope so. You lot get into enough trouble without going down there." Hagrid grumbled.
A few moments later, Mrs Weasley came running over with Ginny barely holding onto her mother's hand. "Harry, oh my goodness. Thank goodness you're okay." She said, hugging the young boy gently. "You could have been anywhere." She took out a brush from her handbag and began to brush the soot Hagrid had missed off Harry, she also cleaned up his face, revealing the bruises which had been covered by the dirt.
Mr Weasley waved his wand and aimed it at Harry's glasses, and they repaired themselves instantly. "I definitely need to learn that one." Harry mumbled.
"Come on, we've got to head into Gringotts first." Ron told his friend. After a short while inside the bank, the Weasleys and Harry were leaving Gringotts along with Hermione and her parents who they had bumped into while inside the bank.
They headed for the bookstore and outside, they all saw the Ainsworth family waiting for them. "Daisuke, over here!" Ron called out to the girl who held Veemon in her arms. She spun around and both she and her Digimon smiled brightly at the group.
"Guys!" Daisuke said, setting Veemon down and the two ran over to them with her mother, father and cousin following.
"Molly! So good to see you!" Alexander said, hugging the plump, red haired woman before shaking Arthur's hand while Natsumi hugged Molly as well.
"Oh man it's so good to see you again." Daisuke said, hugging Harry tightly before hugging Ron and Hermione. She then looked at Harry with a frown. "Why haven't you been returning my letters? And what on Earth happened to your face?" she added in a whisper.
Harry flinched as Ron told her about the bars on Harry's window, of him being locked in his room and of Dobby stealing his letters. "Why would a random House-Elf stop a young wizard's letters?" Veemon asked and Ron shrugged.
Meanwhile, Molly was telling Natsumi and Alexander the same thing about Harry's situation.
"How could those horrid people do that to their own nephew?" Natsumi asked.
"I don't know. But something must be done." Molly said and the Ainsworth head and his wife nodded before sharing a private look between them. "Oh, before I forget." Molly said, turning to Harry and pulling out a jar from her handbag.
"What's this?" he asked, hesitantly taking the small jar and opening it to see a thick white paste.
"Some cream for your bruises. I bought it when we arrived earlier." Molly explained with a kind smile.
"Oh…um…thanks." Harry said with a shaky smile.
"Here, let me help you." Natsumi said gently. Harry tried to resist but he knew better than to argue with Daisuke's mother, from the stories he had heard from both her and Jun, Natsumi was awfully dotting when she wanted to be.
"Thanks…" Harry muttered once she had rubbed the paste over his bruises.
"Now then, let's buy your school books then we can explore and buy everything else you might need." Alexander said, before noticing a sign in the window of Flourish and Blotts, he sighed heavily. "Merlin…why today of all days?"
The others looked at the sign and saw it was for a book signing by Gilderoy Lockhart, the picture magically moving, winking, and smiling at them.
"Oh, I forgot that was today. Come on, inside all of you." Mrs Weasley said, ushering them all into the bookstore.
"Mum fancies him." Ron muttered to Harry, Hermione, and Daisuke.
"Really? Didn't notice." Veemon piped up with a giggle only to yelp as Mrs Weasley swatted him on the head with her handbag.
"He's written most of the school booklist." Hermione whispered with a bright smile. "Oh, I bet he's a brilliant wizard." She gushed.
"Creepy." Ron muttered, leaning away from his friend a bit unnerved by her cheery attitude. The group pushed their way through to the front of the crowd and saw a photographer there.
"Ladies and gentlemen, Gilderoy Lockhart." The owner of the bookstore said and all the women in the shop besides Daisuke, Jun and Natsumi began to applaud and squeal as the blonde-haired wizard stepped out from behind a curtain wearing pale blue robes and stood behind a desk stacked with books.
Alexander groaned, rolling his eyes as he laid his head on Natsumi's shoulder, the woman rolling her eyes but smiling gently at her husband. The photographer took a few pictures of Lockhart before the man noticed Harry standing beside Daisuke and Hermione.
"It can't be, Harry Potter!" he shouted happily, the crowd in the store parted, whispering excitedly. The photographer grabbed Harry by the arm and pulled him towards Lockhart.
"Oh, for Pete's sake." Daisuke huffed, watching as Lockhart shook Harry's hand as the photographer took a picture of the two.
"Nice big smile, Harry. Together you and I are worth the front page." Lockhart told him through his own bright smile. Once he let go of Harry's hand, he wrapped an arm around the boy, pinning him to his side. "Ladies and gentlemen, what an extraordinary moment this is. When young Harry stepped into Flourish and Blotts this morning to purchase my autobiography Magical Me…"
The crowd clapped some more, Daisuke and Ron shared a look of disgust while Jun leaned over to Percy. "Oh, gag me." She hissed, causing him to chuckle softly.
"He had little idea that he and his school fellows will be getting much more than my autobiography. Yes, that is right ladies and gentlemen. It is with great pleasure and pride to announce that I, Gilderoy Lockhart will be taking the position of the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry." Lockhart announced.
"What!?" Alexander shouted, his head shooting up from Natsumi's shoulder.
"Now we know why the list had all of his books." Daisuke muttered to Ron.
"Albus hired that idiot? He couldn't even tie his shoes right." Alexander continued, narrowing his eyes at Lockhart who handed Harry an entire stack of all his books. "What does Lockhart have on Albus?"
"Alexander Arthur Ainsworth!" Natsumi said, slapping his arm and giving him a scolding look.
"What Nat? Clearly, he's got something over Albus. He has no ability to teach kids. That is the only way I can think of that he got the job." Alexander said, rubbing his arm. He then turned to Jun. "Jun, do you still have your second year DADA books?"
Jun thought about it for a moment before she nodded. "Yeah. Why?"
"Can you give them to Daisuke? That way I know she's actually going to learn something useful this year." Alexander said to his niece.
Harry walked over to his friends and handed the books to Ginny, sliding them into her new cauldron. "You have these. I'll buy my own." He told the young girl who nodded with a shy smile.
"Bet you loved that, didn't you Potter?" He turned around, coming face to face with Draco Malfoy. "Famous Harry Potter, can't even go to the bookshop without making it on the front page."
"Leave him alone." Ginny piped up, and Draco glanced at her.
"Oh, got yourself a girlfriend, Potter?" he asked Harry with a smirk as Ginny went red in the face.
"Leave her alone, Malfoy." The blonde turned to see Daisuke, Hermione, Veemon and Ron pushing their way over, clutching their own stacks of books.
"Bet you're surprised to see Harry here." Ron said to Draco with a scowl.
"Not as surprised as I am to see you in a shop, Weasley. I bet your family will go hungry for a month because of all those books." Draco replied with a sneer.
Ron turned as red as his hair before Daisuke and Veemon stood in front of him to stop him from doing something stupid. "Come now, Draco. Play nice." They all looked to see Draco's father appear behind his son, resting his cane on his son's shoulder. He then looked at the other children and hummed. "Ah, the famous Harry Potter. So…happy to finally meet you in person." Lucius said, glancing up at the boy's scar.
He grabbed Harry and pulled him closer only for Daisuke to grab her friend's arm and pulled him back. "He doesn't like people gawking at his scar." She told him bluntly.
Mr Malfoy gave the girl a glare before Alexander and Mr Weasley walked over. "Lucius."
"Arthur." The man replied, glancing over at Hermione's parents. "Muggles…and I thought your family could sink no lower, associating with their kind." He hissed coldly.
"They may be muggles, Lucy. But they still have more honour and class than you." Alexander spoke up, standing behind the kids.
"Ah, Alexander Ainsworth. Pleasure to see you again." Mr Malfoy said before looking at Daisuke again. "And this must be your daughter…Daisuke?" he looked to Draco for confirmation and Draco nodded. "Pleasure to meet you, Miss Ainsworth."
Daisuke narrowed her eyes at the man. Her eyes glinting gold for a moment and the Malfoy head could feel the chill coming from her. "Come, Draco. We're leaving." He told his son before walking out of the shop.
"See you at school." Draco told Harry, Hermione, Ron and Daisuke before he followed his father.
Once they were gone, Daisuke turned to her father with a bright smile. "Hey dad, can I got to the Burrow one day to get some practice flying with the others?"
Ron, Harry, George, and Fred looked at her in shock. "Of course you can starlight, if it's alright with you and Molly, Arthur." Alexander said.
"We'd love to have her over, Jun as well if she wants to join." Arthur said. Jun smiled and glanced over at Percy who smiled as well.
"Sure. I'd love to visit." She said.
"That settles it. Jun, how about you take Daisuke over to the Burrow after lunch every day. That way, it gives all the children enough time to do any chores." Her uncle said.
"Sweet." Ron said, high fiving Daisuke.
"You've got a broom?" Fred and George asked Daisuke.
"Yeah, when I got the results for my exams, I mentioned that Oliver suggested I try out for the Quidditch team when I helped Harry practice. My parents got me the newest broom, a Nimbus 2001. But it has a Gryffindor flair to it."
"A Nimbus 2001?" Fred, George, and Ron gasped.
"Yep." Daisuke chirped.
Soon, the group left the bookshop and had dispersed going through Diagon Alley to finish the rest of their shopping and eventually they all parted ways heading back to their homes.
Later that night in the Ainsworth family home as Jun, Daisuke and Veemon slept. Natsumi and Alexander sat in the living room. "Are you really okay with what we discussed?" Natsumi asked her husband, resting her head on his chest.
"Of course, I'm okay with it. It's a wonderful idea. I think they'll all love it." he told her, kissing her gently on the lips before they headed off to bed.
