Chapter 7: The Legend of the Chamber of Secrets
I don't own Digimon or Harry Potter
For the next few days, all anyone could talk about was what had happened to Mrs Norris on Halloween. Filch kept it fresh in everyone's minds as they saw him pacing the spot where she had been found, some thought he was waiting for the attacker to come back so he could exact some sort of revenge on them. The writing in blood remained on the wall no matter how many times he tried to scrub the walls clean.
When he wasn't guarding the scene of the attack, he was lunging at students out of the darkness trying to give them detentions for petty things like breathing too loudly or looking happy, he was almost as bad as Snape with the infractions he'd think of accusing people with.
"Poor guy," Demi-Veemon whispered, leaning on Daisuke's head around the corner as they watched the man storm off in a huff. "Mrs Norris means a lot to him."
"Yeah. I hope they find the guy who did it and kick him out of school." Daisuke replied, the two walking off to meet up with the others who had gone to the library. Along the way, they passed the corridor where the message and Mrs Norris had been found and spotted Ginny nervously standing there.
Her face was pale, and she had red puffy eyes from crying, as Daisuke walked over to the young girl she jumped and spun around to face her. "Oh, Daisuke. You startled me." She said softly.
"Sorry about that. What're you doing here?" Daisuke asked curiously, placing a hand on Ginny's shoulder.
"Um…I just…wanted to um…I don't know." She answered nervously. "I guess I'm just really sad about Mrs Norris. I love cats, you know, so hearing what happened to her…"
"I know. But don't worry, she'll be fine soon." Daisuke told her.
"Ron said we were better off without Mrs Norris. He said she was horrible, and he said he hoped whoever did it got Filch next." Daisuke sighed and shook her head, it sounded like something Ron would say.
"He was only joking. Nobody deserves anything like what happened to Mrs Norris." She spoke. "Now then, why don't you go get something to eat from the Great Hall, we've still got some time before our next lessons." Ginny nodded and she hurried off away from the corridor and Daisuke walked off rubbing her eyes.
"Are you okay?" Demi-Veemon asked her.
"Not really. My vision came true again Vee…what am I going to do? I couldn't do anything to stop it from happening." She answered.
"Don't beat yourself up about it. You couldn't do anything to save her, whatever attacked her would have surely petrified you as well." Demi-Veemon said. Daisuke looked at her partner and nodded in agreement, both hurried off to the library.
Along the way, they bumped into Harry who gave them a small smile.
"Where have you been?" Demi-Veemon asked the boy.
"Snape held me back after class, he had me cleaning under the desks," Harry grumbled, another blood pop in his mouth as they headed up the stairs to the library.
"Didn't he do that because you were sucking on one of those blood pops in class?" Daisuke questioned. Harry shrugged before he saw Justin Finch Fletchley walking towards them, but before he could call out to greet the boy, he froze and turned around quickly and walked away from them.
"What was that about?" Demi-Veemon asked curiously.
"I don't know. Everyone's been avoiding me recently, don't know why." Harry answered with a huff making Daisuke give him a look of concern as they stopped outside the library for Harry to finish his blood pop before they walked inside and saw Ron at a table, measuring his homework for one of their classes.
"Where's Hermione?" Daisuke asked him.
"Somewhere over there." He grumbled, waving his hand at the bookshelves around the library. "I think she's trying to read the entire library before Christmas. And I'm still eight inches short for my History of Magic homework…" he complained.
Daisuke and Harry gave their friend a sympathetic look as they sat down at the table and began to measure the length of their homework, Professor Binns had asked them to do a three-foot-long parchment on The Medieval Assembly of European Wizards.
"Jun was right, this subject is boring as heck. She only enjoyed going to the class so she could catch up on all her other homework, it wasn't like Professor Binns was going to notice." Daisuke thought.
Harry meanwhile was talking to Ron quietly, firstly about what happened with Justin Finch Fletchley earlier and Ron snorted. "Doesn't surprise me, he is a bit of an idiot. And I wouldn't be surprised if other students weren't spreading rumours about you being behind what happened to Mrs Norris already."
"But I didn't do anything to her." Harry hissed.
"I know that," Ron replied, quickly. "But you gotta understand not everyone believes that, and you just know Malfoy's probably gone around spreading the rumours himself."
Harry frowned and nodded. "And I was looking forward to a quiet year."
"We all were mate," Ron replied, rubbing his back gently before they saw Hermione walking over to them.
"All the copies of Hogwarts: A History have been checked out, and there is a two-week waiting list. I knew I shouldn't have left mine at home, but I couldn't fit it in with all my Lockhart books." She told them.
"Why do you want it?" Harry asked.
"To look up the Chamber of Secrets, that is why everyone else wants the book too," Hermione answered.
"I doubt they'll have anything in that book," Demi-Veemon said. "It's kind of in the name, the Chamber of Secrets, what if the whole thing was kept secret so it wouldn't be in the book, to begin with." He reasoned.
"We won't know until we find out," Daisuke said before she checked her watch. "Shoot, we've got only ten minutes before Transfiguration class begins. We need to grab our pets, remember?"
"Oh man, just let me finish this. I've only got two inches of parchment left to fill out." Ron whined only to be grabbed by Harry and Hermione and dragged out of the library, luckily, he was able to take his work with him.
Soon, after a quick trip to Gryffindor Tower, the group had made it to the Transfiguration classroom with their pets and for those that didn't have any, Professor McGonagall supplied them with some animals she had brought ahead of time.
"May I have your attention please." The Professor said, "Today we will be transforming animals into water goblets." She told the class who all shared a look of interest. "Like so." She turned to the toucan that was sitting on a stack of books on her desk.
Using her wand, she tapped the bird three times. "One, Two, Three, Vera Verto." She said before a jet of crystal-clear mist shot from the tip of her wand, spraying over the animal which transformed into a crystal water goblet.
"Whoa…" whispered a few of the Gryffindor and Slytherin students in the class.
"Now who would like to go first?" Professor McGonagall asked, walking down the rows of desks. "Ah, Miss Ainsworth."
Daisuke beamed and nodded. She took out her wand and gently tapped Salem three times, but before she could cast the spell her cat reached out with his paw and pushed her wand down.
"I'd rather not." He said, making a few of the other student's giggle.
"Salem come on, let me do the spell." Daisuke pleaded, trying again but her cat decided to be difficult and jumped off the desk and walked off under another to avoid Daisuke's wand.
Daisuke crossed her arms and pouted as her cat gave her a mischievous smile. "Well then, who else would like a go?" Professor McGonagall asked before seeing Hermione's hand in the air. "Yes, Miss Granger?"
"Professor, I was wondering if you could tell us what you know about the Chamber of Secrets," Hermione said and everyone looked at her in surprise, Malfoy turning around in his chair to glare at her.
Professor McGonagall took a deep breath. "Very well." She said softly. "You all know, of course, that Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago by four of the greatest witches and wizards of that age: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin." She paused for a moment seeing a few of the Slytherin students looking smug. "Of course, they didn't do it alone."
"It was in fact two people, both who were much older than all of them combined. They had the aid of the great and powerful Merlin Ambrosius and the beautiful and naturally talented Morgana Le-Fay-Pendragon."
Daisuke and the others shared a look, they didn't know that part about the school, it was left out of the History book, they wondered why.
"Now, three of the founders coexisted quite harmoniously. One did not."
"Three guesses who," Ron whispered to Harry, glancing at Malfoy and the other Slytherins.
Professor McGonagall gave him a look before she continued. "Salazar Slytherin wished to be more selective about the students admitted to Hogwarts. He believed magical learning should be kept within all-magic families. In other words, pure-bloods. Unable to sway the others, also unable to convince Merlin and Morgana, he decided to leave the school. Now, according to legend Slytherin had built a hidden chamber in this castle known as the Chamber of Secrets. Though, shortly before departing, he sealed it until that time when his own true Heir returned to the school. The heir alone would be able to open the Chamber and unleash the horror within, and by so doing purge the school of all those who in Slytherin's view, were unworthy to study magic."
"Muggle-borns," Hermione whispered and the Professor nodded.
"Naturally, the school has been searched many times. No such chamber has been found."
"Professor what did you mean when you said the horror within?" Hermione asked.
"Nobody knows, but it is said to be home to something that only the Heir of Slytherin can control. It is said to be the home of a monster." Professor McGonagall finished grimly.
The only one who didn't seem scared by this story was Malfoy and after the lesson, he, Crabbe and Goyle walked out of the classroom as if nothing had happened. "Can you believe him?" Daisuke grumbled, glaring at the blonde.
"I'm starting to like him even less than I already did," Harry muttered, another blood pop in his mouth.
"Well, he has a reason to be so smug. I bet he thinks he's Slytherin's heir or something." Ron muttered.
"Malfoy?" Hermione asked.
"Of course, didn't you hear him when he saw Mrs Norris? You'll be next Mudbloods, that's what he said." Ron answered.
"I heard him!" Hermione snapped back.
"Ron's right Hermione, every member of Malfoy's family has been in Slytherin for well over a century," Harry said. "We need to do something."
Hermione nodded and they stopped walking as other students passed them. "Alright, but what we're going to be doing…it will be illegal and no doubt we will be breaking about fifty school rules, and it'll be dangerous."
"When has that stopped us before?" Daisuke asked with a grin.
Hermione, Harry, and Ron shared a chuckle and smiled. "The book we need will be in the Restricted Section, we'll need a note from a professor to get it," Hermione explained.
"Okay, so we need a gullible professor who won't ask questions," Daisuke said.
"Lockhart." Harry and Ron said at once.
"Good idea," Daisuke said, and Hermione nodded in agreement, and they all continued walking along. As they did, Daisuke paused for a moment and leaned against a wall, her eyes flashing gold for a moment as another vision came to her.
She saw a Bludger flying directly at someone followed by Harry's face twisted in pain and the vision finished with Lockhart waving his wand and there being a greenish-blue flash of light.
"Daisuke, hey are you okay?" she looked up at Harry who saw her lagging behind him and the others.
"Um…y…yeah. Coming." She said, following him a pit of uneasiness building in her stomach again. "Another vision…so soon…what is happening?" she thought.
