Chapter 12: The Sorting

Time has a bad habit of going very fast when something huge, and important, was coming. Before long it was September 1st and it was time to leave to go to Hogwarts. Artemis packed everything that she would need and they both waited, with Merlin, for the carriage to arrive. The carriage arrived at five exactly and they both boarded it, Artemis putting Merlin's basket in a corner. As soon as the carriage moved Merlin poked his head out and decided that the open window was an invite to 'hang your head out.' Artemis shook her head while Selene thought it was funny.

"Don't worry," Selene told him. "Mother will feed you."

The carriage came to a stop and Selene made sure that Merlin was back in his basket and they got out. The castle was larger than in her dream and she had a feeling she was going to enjoy her seven years. Even if she was hunting down Tom Riddle's head.

"Welcome to Hogwarts," Severus told them.

"Thanks for the welcome," Artemis told him.

"I'll take you both down to my office where Selene can wait until it's time to join the others."

She nodded and they followed him inside.

Severus office had to be the most fascinating place that she had ever been in. Keeping her hands behind her back she looked at all the ingredients, already thinking about what she could use them for.

"My class is hard," he told her.

"I don't mind," Selene said. "After the summer that I've had I need something that is hard."

"I'll agree with that," Artemis said.

They chatted for about an hour and then she was led to the tiny room off the Great Hall. The other students were already there and they looked at her as though she was an oddity. The only ones that waved at her was Draco and Hermione. She stood between them and then a Professor arrived. She was a tall witch with black hair up in a tight bun. The look that she gave them all was that she wasn't a teacher to cross.

"Welcome to Hogwarts," she told them. "In a few moments you will pass through these doors and join your classmates. But, before you do that you must be sorted into your houses. They are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each has its own noble history and has produced outstanding witches and wizards. While you're here your house will be like your family, within Hogwarts. Triumphs will earn you points, any rule breaking, and you'll lose points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points will be awarded the house cup. A great honor!

"I hope that you become a credit to which house becomes yours. Now you'll wait here, quietly."

And she was gone.

Everyone, minus Selene, started to talk among each other. A boy from the red head family told someone that his brother, Fred, and mentioned a test and that it hurt a lot to be sorted. Selene doubted that they would put anyone in any kind of danger. Though, knowing her luck, it might not be true. Hermione made it clear that she didn't care what house she was in, as long as she was at Hogwarts. Selene decided to take that route. Let Fate decide what house she would be in. It had already done that with her birth.

When Professor McGonagall came back she led them into the Great Hall, which was as large as the dining pavilion at camp. There were four long tables that seated the students and a fifth one, where the teachers sat. Right in-front of the teachers was a stool and an ancient hat. Selene had a feeling this was what was used to sort students.

Professor McGonagall had them stop and they were facing the teachers, with the students behind them. Suddenly the hat opened its mouth and started to sing.

Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.
There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means
To achieve their ends.
So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!

The students behind them cheered as it finished its song and Selene really wondered what house would be a fit for her.

"When I call your name, you will come forth, and be sorted," she told them (A/N: This will not be done in alphabetical order and won't include everyone as Selene's mind will wonder). "Longbottom, Neville."

A round face boy approached the stool and the hat was placed on his head. It took a couple of minutes and the hat screamed, "GRYFFINDOR!" Neville got up to head to the Gryffindor table, but had to hurry back, among laughter, to give it back to McGonagall. She shook her head.

"Drew, Leanne."

A girl with long brown hair sat on the stool.

"HUFFLEPUFF!" the hat shouted and the Hufflepuff table cheered as the hat was taken off her head and she went over to the Hufflepuff table.

"Boot, Terry."

"RAVENCLAW!"

"Malfoy, Draco."

"SLYTHERIN!" the hat shouted and he went over to the Slytherin table and sat down.

"Wesley, Ronald."

"It's Ron, you old fart."

Selene and Hermione both looked at each other.

"GRYFFINDOR!"

"He's going to be her nightmare," Selene told Hermione went Ron was seated at the Gryffindor table.

Hermione shook her head.

"Fletchley, Justin."

"HUFFLEPUFF!" the hat shouted.

After that Selene's mind went blank. Suddenly someone tapped her on the shoulder and it turned out to be Severus. She looked around and found that she, and Hermione, were the only ones left.

"They called both your names seven times," he told her.

Selene went pink.

"Miss Potter and Miss Granger are ready to be sorted," he told Professor McGonagall.

"About time," she said.

Hermione chose to go first and the hat was placed on her head.

"SLYTHERIN!" the hat shouted at once and Selene wondered if it had something to do with Hermione being a child of Hecate.

"Potter, Selene."

Everyone was talking among themselves and Selene did her best to ignore what was being said. She sat down and the hat was placed on her head.

"Very interesting, daughter of Artemis. Don't worry, I won't tell anyone that doesn't know that you're a demigod. Let's see, where to put you. Hum, yes, I have the perfect house for you. And, hopefully, you will be able to change it for the better. BETTER BE…. SLYTHERIN!"

The hat was taken off her head among cheers from the Slytherin table. The look that she got from McGonagall was nothing short of pure rage. She had a feeling that the Deputy Headmistress wasn't going to be an ally. As she made her way to the Slytherin table she caught the worried look on Severus face. It seems that, he too, had seen the look on her face.

"YOU TRAITOR!" she screamed, which indicated that she couldn't keep her rage contained.

The shock of those words made Selene stare at her. She backed away, ready to defend herself either magically or physically.

"WHAT YOU'RE PARENTS WOULD THINK."

Selene got mad. She knew, for a fact, that James wouldn't have been upset with her for being in Slytherin. Not after she had helped Percy, Annabeth, and Grover save the world by preventing the gods from going to war. It was time to put this woman in her place. Without caring what anyone thought she changed into a wolf, black as night, her eyes glowing ember. This wasn't what McGonagall expected and she screamed and passed out.

"Welcome to another year at Hogwarts," Selene heard the hat say, and chuckled as well.

Hermione hated what McGonagall had said to Selene, calling her a traitor. She vowed that she would make the woman's next seven years Hades as possible. Selene, in her wolf form, walked over to the Slytherin table and jumped onto the bench, Malfoy moving aside so that she could sit.

"That was bloody brilliant, Selene," Hermione said and she swore she could see a wolf-like grin on Selene's face.

She changed back and said, "Awe, cousin, you say the nicest things."

"This has got to be the wickedest thing that I've ever seen in my life," a large girl said. "Millicent Bulstrode."

They shook hands and Selene said, "This is Hermione."

"You're not related to the Founder of the Moste Excellent Society of Potioneers are you?"

"I don't know," Hermione said. "I do know that I'm a half-blood."

"So is that odd woman around?" Malfoy asked her.

"Which odd woman?'

"The one that was with that woman that mum knew?"

"No, she went back home," Hermione told him. "And that odd woman is my mother."

"Word of advice, Draco, don't make Hermione's mother mad. She will turn you into something that you didn't think was possible."

"I'll take that advice."

"I can't believe that we have a natural born Animagus in Slytherin," Millicent said. "This is going to be one wicked year."

Or a hair raising one, according to Severus.

Hermione and Selene had nothing to give offerings to their godly parents and Selene doubted that Severus would do anything to raise eyes. However, she did see him putting something in his pocket and so she figured that's how he did it. She did the same and Hermione followed suit. And then they got started on their meals.

"This is all your fault, Albus," McGonagall said while Quirrell and Severus both rolled their eyes.

"And how is it my fault?"

"It just is," she said. "I want her resorted into Gryffindor."

"I'm not going against the hat," Albus said. "Look, just accept that James and Lily's daughter is in Slytherin."

"I WILL NEVER!" she screamed and stormed out of the room.

"This is going to be one nasty year," Quirrell said.

"I'm going to agree."

A/N: The reason that I put Selene in Slytherin was so that she could help children of Death Eaters make the right choices. McGonagall is going to take Snape's place as the teacher that can't stand her. And if you want to know what Voldemort thinks about her actions. Well, he thinks that McGonagall has finally gone over the loop. He might be evil, but even he thinks that her reaction was just way too much. Next up: the hate mail.
