Chapter 14: The Monster in Gryffindor

As for those in Gryffindor the first week was supposed to be befriending The-Girl-Who-Lived, joining her in pranking the Slytherin's, and wasting time that could have been used in doing homework. The Pureblood's, and some half-blood's, had grown up with stories of James Potter and his friends. Now, the girl that was supposed to be friends with them, was in Slytherin and friends with Malfoy and that dark witch, Granger's.

The Muggleborns were upset, and furious, with Granger for turning her back on them. The others had told them all the horror stories of what the Death Eaters had done to people like them that they felt a personal anger with her. How dare she get sorted into Slytherin, being around people whose parents had killed people like them. Didn't she have any pride?

"She's like the rest of them," Ron Weasley said. "All she cares about is power."

"And Potter will probably give it to her."

"I can't believe that I looked up to her," another student said.

The only ones that wasn't in the 'I hate Potter camp' was the Weasley twins. They knew that something had to of happen to cause Selene Potter to end up in Slytherin. And they were going to find out. That night, while they slept, the shadows stirred. Two large, red eyes, appeared and a low growl came from the darkness that was in the corner. It woke Neville, who let out a scream of pure terror.

And so, it started.

As Hogwarts students entered their second week of term news that Gryffindor was haunted by a monster that only appeared as a growl and glowing red eyes soon spread through the whole school. Thankfully no one believed that it was coming from Slytherin so McGonagall never screamed at Dumbledore, blaming the Slytherin's for what was happening. Selene, Hermione, and Draco believed that the Gryffindor's were making it up to get attention. The wards, which included a ward that kept monsters out, hadn't been breached.

During the second week Hermione had four attempts to curse her and Selene still kept getting hate mail. On Thursday the monster finally attacked, sending one student to the hospital and not the one in the castle.

"Do you think this is the work of the Dark Lord?"

"I doubt it," Dumbledore said.

News of the attack reached the Daily Prophet and everyone wanted to know why those poor, sweet, kind, brave, Gryffindor's had been attacked. It was enough to make Hermione want to vomit. She got so mad that she threw the paper into the fire.

"Watch the temper, Granger."

"Oh bite me," she snarled and stormed out.

As for Artemis, she summoned her daughter.

"We are going to kill that monster, even though I don't feel sorry for the house it's targeting," she said.

"When do we do it?"

"During the Full Moon," Artemis answered.

"I'll be there," Selene promised.

Thursday was a day that Selene really wish that she could just forget was even a day. Thursday was Flying Lessons and they were stuck with the Gryffindor's. The look on Hermione's face told Selene and Draco that she wasn't happy about this.

"Just what I want to do, be in the line of fire of that damn house."

"Madam Hooch won't allow anything to happen to you."

Hermione snorted at that.

However, off they went. Outside the castle, across the ground, to where about twenty broomsticks were lined up in neat rows. The Gryffindor's hadn't arrived, but Selene saw that her mother was there. Good, if something happened the Gryffindor's couldn't start on any of them. There was a bench and that's where her mother sat, her eyes focused on them. When the Gryffindor's arrived she figured that they could see her, but the grins on their faces told her that they probably couldn't.

Artemis could become invisible to mortals, thus allowing her to drop in on anyone, or any creature, without them knowing. Madam Hooch arrived, a woman with short, silver, hair and yellow eyes, like a hawk.

"Stand near a broom," she told them. "Hurry up, we haven't all day."

They all walked next to a broom and Selene looked down at hers. It was very old, with twigs sticking at odd ends. Hermione glared down at hers and then Selene noticed that Wesley was standing in-front of Hermione. They mentally shared a look and then Madam Hooch spoke.

"Place your right hand over your broom and say, up," she told them.

"UP!" Selene said and at once her broom jumped into her hand.

Suddenly Weasley's started to attack him and everyone, including those in Gryffindor, started laughing their heads off.

"Get this thing off of me," he begged as it chased him back to the castle.

"Good work, Hermione," Selene told her.

"No problem," Hermione said.

The lesson continued and one of the Gryffindor's, a boy that Draco called Neville Longbottom, had problems. They were supposed to kick off the ground, hard, and hover. However, Selene sensed that he was scared to death of being left behind, and kicked off the ground before Madam Hooch had blown her whistle.

"Come down here, boy," she ordered.

Scared out of his skin he started to scream his head off. Selene knew that, despite how the so-called house of the brave treated Hermione, she wasn't going to let someone break their neck. Suddenly the broom started to float down and Selene knew that Hermione was doing it. Longbottom landed on the soft ground and the child was crying his eyes out.

"I can't believe that he's in our house," Selene heard someone say.

Selene walked over and bent down.

"It's alright," she told him and she sent him soothing energy, like when one of Artemis wolves was hurt.

The sobbing stopped and she gave him a soft smile.

"Oh stop cuddling the idiot child," Madam Hooch said.

Selene glared at her and she backed away.

"Don't call anyone an idiot," she snarled. "Come on, let's get you back to the castle and away from these horrible brooms."

"She cuddled him like he was a child," Madam Hooch told Albus.

"How is he supposed to be like his parents if he's been treated like his fragile," Minerva said. "And I bet she's got some dark plan involved."

"Women, Miss Potter has the right to treat whomever she wants with kindness. It's something that Lily would have done."

"She acts nothing like Lily."

"I don't agree with that assessment," Severus told them. "She acts just like Lily more than she does like her father."

"Can't even bare to say his name, Severus," Minerva said.

"This discussion is over," Albus told them. "If you have a problem with how Miss Potter acts towards others, unless it's breaking the rules, then that's your problem. And not mine!"

And the tone told them that it was over.

"Why didn't you let him get hurt?" Draco asked Selene. "Having him get hurt would have been funny."

Everyone in Slytherin had been asking her that same question. It was now getting on her nerves.

"BECAUSE NO ONE SHOWED ME ANY KINDNESS AND I THOUGHT, AS MY FRIEND, YOU WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT."

And she stormed off, leaving a shocked, and stunned, common room staring at her retreating form.

Hermione shook her head, knowing her pain.

A/N: Not all friendships are perfect and Hermione will have a few pearls of wisdom for Draco.
