One Week Before Mardi Gras

Klaus stumbled in through one of the back doors the family rarely used and slipped into the stairwell near his room. It had been built for servants centuries ago and was dark and cramped. With his Original vampire senses, Klaus kept his footing and made it to his quarters without falling. He did wonder how female staff in the past had ever navigated those treacherous stairs with their long dresses in the past. He suspected that more than a few fell.

Odd, Klaus thought, I don't recall leaving the light on. He hadn't, but someone was in his studio. Klaus entered and the hairs on the back of his neck stood up. A little girl was finishing his Moon over the Louisiana Bayou painting, by finishing, he meant ruining it!

"Hello, luv, may I help you?" Klaus drawled.

The child jumped back, "I was just...fixing it!"

"Fixing what? It was nearly perfect. I had that moon just the way I wanted it," Klaus scolded lightly, wondering who the hell this kid was.

"It was wrong! Too much red. The moon isn't red, not in Norway," she countered.

"Norway? My dear, may I inquire as to your name?" Klaus asked politely.

"It is Jazmine Angel Olaug Mikaelson. May I in-qq-quire as to your name?" Jazmine sassed back.

"Mikaelson? Yes, um, my father named me Niklaus, but my friends call my Klaus. Klaus Mikaelson," Klaus smiled as he took her started to take her hand. His eyes widened at the amount of oil paint on the sleeves of her white blouse that was under the plaid dress. That wasn't coming out.

"Jazmine!" Sage exclaimed excitedly. "There you are! Oh, hi Klaus. I'm so sorry. Did she get into your paintings? I trusted her to go to the bathroom alone."

Klaus broke away from Jazmine and went to kiss Sage on the cheek, "Hello, Sister. You look ravishing as always. Is my brother still vexed with me? And who is this little Picasso?"

The child was short, but had a confident stance. Her eyes were sharp and the glasses made her appear a touch wise. But the freckles charmed Klaus the most.

Sage smiled, "Your new niece! Finn is downstairs. Klaus, you know your brother, he is as stubborn as the rest of you. Jazmine, what do you say to your uncle for messing with his painting?"

Jazmine smirked, "You're welcome."

Klaus looked at painting and maybe she had a point. It did look more polished, more refined...the moon was less crude.

"Young lady, you know you should not touch other people's things without permission. Now, tell Uncle Klaus that you are sorry," Sage said firmly.

"But I helped him!" Jazmine defended.

"I'm sorry, Klaus. Maybe we should let you scribble all over Jazmine's drawings," Sage offered giving Jazmine a stern look. She was embarrassed that Jazmine would not just apologize and move on.

Klaus smiled, "Really, Sage. It is fine. Jazmine is welcome to paint with me anytime. But I will provide her with her own canvas and maybe some acrylics that will wash out. I am afraid that shirt is ruined."

"Well, that can come out of her allowance. That's a brand new shirt," Sage added.

"It's fine, Mommy," Jazmine grinned. She clamped her hand on Klaus' wrist and an orange light transferred. Sage saw what Jazmine did and tried to stop it, but it was too late. Then, Jazmine brushed her hand over the shirt sleeves and they were clean again.

Klaus staggered back, "She's a s-," He could not finish. What he just saw astounded him.

Finn was at the door suddenly, "There you all are...Brother, we need to talk."

Dining Room

Elijah poured wine first and then served blood for his brothers. The dining room was backlit by cases of wine displayed in the side walls. Chandeliers hung from the ceiling giving the room a warm glow.

"I didn't know you were even coming," Klaus said casually, though he was a little hurt that no one told him.

"Niklaus, this was planned when you were still in France. Then, we thought it would be a nice surprise. Finn and Sage are just going to stay for the wedding," Elijah reasoned.

"Oh," Klaus said, "Well, your daughter is lovely. She already schooled me in painting the first five minutes I met her. However, I was a tad surprised when she siphoned me and did a spell to clean the paint off of her sleeves."

Finn paled, "Yes, she is a very special child. That is one of the reasons Sage and I decided to stay in a hotel. Jazmine can be...unpredictable. We found her on a dig in a cave in France. Her parents were hiding from her father's coven. It seems that he, too, was a siphon." Sage had taken Jazmine back to the hotel for the night.

Elijah sat at the long dining table still laden with food from the dinner Klaus had missed. He asked, "Did you tell Niklaus the rest?"

Finn breathed in, "Jazmine's mother was a werewolf. I'm not sure what happened, but it looked like she died defending her family. Sage found Jazmine hiding in a small nook in the cave. We don't know how long she was there or what she saw. We made it look like she died also. Brother, all she had on her was a pendant with the name 'Jazmine' and some ragged clothing."

Klaus' eyes grew wide, "She's a wolf, too. And a siphon witch? Bloody hell! Another hybrid."

"Yes, we are aware of the dangers, but she is just a little girl. It was love at first sight for us. Despite her powers, her eyesight is very poor. Until we got her glasses, she never even saw us clearly. The first thing she said to Sage was 'Tu es belle.' You are beautiful," Finn grabbed his wine and downed it. Elijah glanced at Klaus in surprise.

Klaus cleared his throat, "No one knows better what it is like to be a hybrid that us here, Finn. We are here for whatever you need. Freya can perhaps work on something to help with the siphoning. You know Jazmine could kill Sage in a fit of temper and use us as...batteries."

Finn nodded, "We are aware. We've been trying to keep her very calm, but a werewolf child has more tantrums than we anticipated. Do you know why I turned to studying the past, Niklaus? I mean, really?"

Klaus sipped his wine and leaned back in his chair, "I do not."

"I wanted to see what I missed all the hundreds of years in that box...life went on without me. People lived, worked, warred, birthed, feasted, and died...and I slept. I never told you this, but after a few hundred years...something happened. I woke up. I became conscious for decades at a time. The only things that kept from from going insane was the life around me. I could not move, but our Original vampire hearing allowed me to zone in on conversations. Sometimes I could make them out, sometimes not due to the languages. But I gained a curiosity for how people lived and survived. I wish to uncover that past now and pretend I was there," Finn confessed.

Klaus stood, "Finn, I have no words for what I did to you. Let me make it up to you by helping your daughter. To be a wolf is a very special thing. A wolf longs for a pack, an alpha, and the hunt. We have in us the urge to trigger our curse. I felt it as a child before Mother gave me that sparrow necklace. I would suggest that for Jazmine, but it made me weak, vulnerable. That is the opposite of the nature of a werewolf. And for her to be a siphon, too. Brother, she needs Freya."

Elijah saw the look of pain on Finn's face, "Brother, we all wronged you and we need to live with that. But Niklaus is right, Jazmine herself will need a firm hand,-"

"Elijah, I told you how I feel about that," Finn reminded him.

"No, allow me to finish, 'children' need a firm hand, but also much love and structure. Believe me, Marcel and Hope have both proved to be very 'spirited' at times, just like Rebekah and Kol were. My future bride, Hayley, is an alpha and a mother, she also could give some insight into how to raise a young werewolf," Elijah grinned. He looked at Klaus, "Or a very old one."

Klaus scowled back, "Or a very old, stodgy vampire!" Klaus didn't want Finn knowing how Hayley threatened to wallop him a few times. He had the feeling if she had a mind to do it, he wouldn't be able to stop her. Klaus figured Elijah was resigned to the fact that his werewolf queen was in charge and would not put up with his repressed emotions if she could help it. And help it, she did.

Finn rolled his eyes, "I don't want to know. But Sage and I are concerned that Jazmine's father's coven hunts her still. The death cover story may have convinced them, but we don't know who they are. We had her cloaked before we even left France, just in case, but we just don't feel safe keeping her in Norway any longer."

Elijah drank his blood, "Something happened, didn't it?"

Finn swallowed, "She almost triggered her curse before we realized she was a siphon. We thought a vampire friend of ours could watch her for an hour while we went to seek council from some area witches. We came back to finding the dame almost drained and Jazmine jumping on the bed. She got angry because the lady wouldn't let her have another cookie."

Klaus moved and sit right next to Finn, "Brother, let us help you, your family. It is the least we can do."

Finn nodded sadly, "I do not have much choice. I will do this for Jazmine." Finn raised his glass and they all drank their wine in silence a moment.

Elijah looked at his watch, "Excuse me, Brothers. I have a young wolf myself that I need to put to bed early. And yes, I am planning on putting him over my knee and heating up his naughty behind because that is what he needs right now. Finn, I respect how you feel about it, but you also need to face the reality of parenting a hybrid child...Can we agree to disagree?"

Finn nodded, "Sage is concerned about Jazmine's behavior. Maybe I have been too rigid in my beliefs? I don't know what is right or wrong anymore...I just want her safe. I do not want my child to harm or kill someone. I don't want that on her soul or for her to trigger her curse. I guess unless it fell on me to keep someone safe, I didn't understand the burden."

Elijah put a hand on Finn's shoulder, "We'll get through this with you. I swear it to you, Brother. Good night."

Elijah winced remembering that he had promised to paddle Henry's bottom again before bed. He cursed himself, but trudged to the kitchen to retrieve the paddle from the drawer again. It was important to him to keep his word, but he was only planning to swat him a few token times. Freya came in.

"Hey, boys meeting in the dining room?" she said getting a bottle of water from the fridge.

"Yes, it just kind of happened. Um, can I fill you in later? I promised Henry a bedtime spanking," Elijah said holding up the round wooden paddle.

Freya laughed, "Ouch! Plus, it's early. It's only 9:14pm."

"Early bedtime...I told him he was being sent to bed early as part of his punishment. He's a good kid, but I fear he's never had any real discipline. Hey, that salve was pretty effective? It didn't last too long, but it seemed to help," Elijah commented.

"I know. I am going to make another batch. Or better yet, have Hope make some. I have a feeling we will need it around here," Freya smiled.

Elijah paused, "You heard about dear Jazmine, she siphoned Klaus a bit upstairs."

Freya gasped, "What? No, I didn't know. That is very dangerous. Is it safe for Sage to be around her? I need to talk to Finn about making some kind of device to pause the siphoning."

"I think he's still in there with Niklaus. So far, no blood is being shed," Elijah revealed.

"Good. Because I am not averse to using the remaining salve on both of them and bending them over for a spanking if they can't behave either. It seems to be the only thing that works around here," Freya complained.

"Hey, I feel Kol used to benefit from writing lines and standing in the corner. Of course, I had to spank him anyway to get him to do that half the time, but he eventually learned I meant what I said after a few centuries," Elijah joked.

"Don't be too sure about that," Kol called. He popped through the kitchen door from the courtyard. He had come in the front entrance. He still had his key.

Freya yelped, "Kol! You made it!" She hugged him with gusto. "I missed you so much."

Kol hugged her back, "Me, too, Sister. Love you. Davina has to work."

Elijah turned and hugged him next, "What a surprise! Are you here for Mardi Gras or my wedding?"

"Both," Kol said. "I actually came to talk Hayley out of marrying you!"

Freya laughed, "Kol, you are pushing it. Elijah's had...a rough few weeks. I wouldn't mess with him too much."

"Well-said, Freya. Oh Kol, I almost...forgot," Elijah smirked. "I owe you a surprise of my own!"

Elijah pulled back and suddenly turned Kol to the side, and swatted him twice with the paddle after he pulled up his belt loops to tighten his slacks. Pop! Pop!

"Ouch! 'Lijah, what'd I do? Hey, wait," Kol whined as he tried to protect his backside. Pop! Pop!

Freya stood with her hand over her mouth laughing. She knew the little paddle over her younger brother's trousers would barely phase him, so she let it play out. This did not stop Kol from yelling out, "Stop, Elijah! Dammit...Is this about the whoopee cushion? That was funny! Everyone said..."

Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop!

"That's for calling me the village idiot, young man," Elijah reminded him. He hugged Kol and kissed him on the head before giving him a stern look. Kol cursed under his breath and Elijah grabbed him and this time bent him over the table and swatted him a few more times. He held Kol down and offered Freya the paddle, but she declined.
"Okay, let him up, Elijah. He just got here," Freya added. Elijah did and ruffled Kol's hair.

Kol rubbed his backside, "That thing stings! I warned him that widow was going to cause a problem but no one listens to old Kol...bloody hell. Do you just carry around a paddle with you where ever you go?"

Elijah said, "No, but I do have to go have a stern word with a certain hybrid. Freya can explain. Finn and Niklaus were on their way to getting loaded in the dining room. Kol, I'm happy your best."

Elijah smiled and headed to Henry's room.

Kol looked at Freya and she shrugged, "You called him the 'village idiot!"

Kol snickered, "Is there a rule against pranks against the groom at his own wedding?"

"Kol," Freya warned. "Don't even think about it. I mean it!"

Kol held up his hands, "Just a joke. I know better. But it is tempting...But Freya, he was the village idiot! Everyone knew that Tatia was just playing the both of them!"

"Kol!" Freya hollered.

"I'll go say hello to Finn and Nik," Kol grumbled.

Henry's Room

Henry was in his pajamas reading in bed when Elijah came in. Hope had given him some graphic novels and comic books she thought he might like.

"Anything good?" Elijah asked seeing the reading materials on the bed.

"Yeah, they are kind of cool. Um, thanks for helping me with all this. Did you look over my tests?" Henry asked anxiously.

"Yes, I did. Henry, I see that you are very bright. When you focus, you don't seem to have any issues at all. Now, vampires do have the added benefit of a better memory, but I think if you put your mind toward it and you want it, you could be a very good student," Elijah espoused.

"Really? Wow, that's great. Would you smack me harder tonight if I admitted that I never really tried in school? Then I guess that just became a habit, but I am finding things more interesting now that I am here...Well, blood is the most interesting to me, but,-" Henry babbled.

"Henry, I've been a vampire longer than almost anyone alive. I understand the hunger for blood. Is the animal blood helping your cravings?" Elijah asked as Henry gathering up his books and set them on the bedside table.

"Yes, sir. It really is. Thank you," Henry acknowledged. Henry was allowed two blood bags a day, and then as much animal blood as he wanted. He could also eat as much much as he wanted to satisfy his wolf side. The animal blood did not taste that good, but cut the cravings back severely.

"You are welcome. So I'm assuming Hope told you that she got punished this morning by her aunt and her mother and her grounding is lifted?" Elijah started.

"Yes, sir. She told me everything, in case, I could get the same, um, deal," Henry croaked. In his nervousness, his voice cracked on deal.

Elijah hefted the paddle, "You can. Henry, I don't like swatting your behind. But I sense that you need to know that if you disobey, there are consequences. You earned a spanking for not cooperating and an early bedtime, but if you want to get out of your grounding, I am going to have to be a little firmer than I originally planned. It is completely up to you, though."

Henry paled, "I don't want to stay grounded, but I don't want to get spanked either."

"Young man, you are getting the paddle either way. Remember? But I was planning to put you to bed early with a warm bottom to remind you to follow directions. A punishment is going to be a few minutes over my knee with your pants down," Elijah explained.

Henry gulped, "Will you use your belt?'

"No, but I will use the paddle at the end. More with the paddle if you don't behave during your spanking. You need to try to cooperate," Elijah said gently.

"Okay, I will take the longer spanking. Hope said the sore...butt is worth it," Henry said, quickly correctly himself before he revealed Hope's use of the word "ass." Elijah smiled. His niece, soon to be step-daughter, could be just as full of sass as her mother and father. Elijah had come to accept that.

Elijah still didn't plan to be too hard on the young hybrid. He didn't bring the salve and just planned to redden his bottom a bit and then pop him in his bed for the night.

"Do you need to use the bathroom before we start? Did you brush your teeth? Wash your face?" Elijah prompted.

"Yes, sir," Henry promised.

"I'm going to check your toothbrush," Elijah said heading towards the bathroom.

"Okay, maybe I forgot!" Henry gulped as he trotted to the attached bathroom to brush. Elijah smiled slightly. He recalled doing the same thing with Marcel. Klaus always believed his son, but Elijah had used this trick many a time.

As Henry was in the bathroom, Elijah called out, "More guests will be arriving. My sister, her husband, and their son, Jamie, should be here soon. I think you made the right decision. No one wants to be restricted for Mardi Gras. You'll have security around you, but you and Hope can get out and enjoy the parades."

Henry came out scrubbed and with his hair combed back. "Sorry," he said sheepishly.

Elijah smiled softly, "It's okay, Henry. I know that old habits are hard to break. Come on, let's get you spanked and put to bed."

Henry flushed hotly, "I feel like a little kid."

"When we don't behave correctly, we get paddled like a little kid, don't we?" Elijah chided as he set the wooden paddle down on the bed spread. "Over my lap. I'll move back. I want your whole body up here."

Henry sniffled as he started to tear up, "It's embarrassing." Henry climbed over Elijah's lap. He had put a pillow over it to prop up Henry's behind.

"It is. But what is really shameful is poor behavior that can get us or those we love hurt or killed," Elijah lectured. "Think of that. A spanking is just a little correction. A big correction is much harder to deal with...learn from this and do better, okay. Next time, think and say no to the alcohol. Think about going along with my niece's crazy schemes. That vervain would have scalded you and knocked you out. Oh, and never fool with witch business. Got it."

Elijah pulled Henry's pajama pants taut over his behind and swatted him with his hand. Crack. Henry's entire body was resting on the bed and Henry's feet kicked back.

Crack! Crack! Crack! Crack!

Elijah went back and forth applying his hand to the cloth covered wiggling rear in front of him.

"Stay still, Henry," Elijah cautioned. Pat! Pat! Whack!

He spanked his whole behind steadily and lightly for another minute to just let the sting gradually build up. Now Henry was really thrashing.

For Henry, Elijah's left arm around his back held him in place, but he could not stay still. His backside was tender and now warm.

"The salve should have worn off, Henry," Elijah informed him. "Did you drink enough blood today?"

Henry gasped as a smack caught the top of his thigh. Crack!

"Yes, sir. Sorry, it just stings!" Henry yelped as another smack fell on his other thigh. Crack!

"That's okay. But I think it's time for your pants to come down," Elijah said. Henry lifted up and Elijah tugged down his pants to find his bottom pink and bare.

"Where are your briefs, young man?" Elijah prompted.

"I thought you would get mad if I wore them for my punishment," Henry whined.

"No, you are to wear them every day and night. A fresh pair, I should add. We do quite a bit of laundry here so you should always have clean clothes. I expect you to be dressed properly," Elijah insisted.

"Sorry!" Henry wailed as he began to cry harder. Whack! Whack! Whack! Whack!

The spanking hurt a great deal more on his bare bottom. He chided himself for thinking that underpants would be cheating. Sometimes he felt like he couldn't win.

Elijah paused, "Hey, buddy, it's okay. Look, if you don't know something, you can ask." Henry was staring at the comforter beneath him, it blurred from the tears in his eyes. He had his arms folded under his head. Elijah stopped spanking and asked if he understood.

"Yes, I just feel like a screw up," Henry revealed.

Elijah rubbed his stinging behind a moment, "I'm sorry if I made you feel that way. That wasn't my intention. I know this is all new to you and I have no right to assume you know my expectations. I apologize. About twenty with the paddle and then we are done."

Henry tensed and braced himself for some hard swats with the paddle. He felt Elijah pressed it against his hot behind right in between both cheeks and then pulled back. Pop!

"Awwww," Henry wailed. The paddle stung and Henry tried to kick and then protect his behind with his feet. Elijah waited until he put them down. Henry realized if he didn't control himself, he was going to make the paddling a lot longer.

Pop! Pop!

The next flurry of spanks were in the center of each cheek, right and then left. After that, Elijah gave him a hard one across both cheeks.

Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop!

Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop!

Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop!

Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop!

Elijah was not cracking the boy's behind with even a tenth of his strength, but by the time he was done, Henry's rear was red. Elijah put down the round paddle and rubbed Henry's back and spanked seat. Without the salve, Henry was healing. Elijah ordered him to lift and pulled up his pajama pants.

He let the young hybrid cry for a moment and then pulled him up. While Henry was in a kneeling position, Elijah hugged him and then sat him carefully on his lap to wipe his face.

Elijah held him again, "I mean it Henry, you are young and learning. This time is critical for you. I know it probably feels like I am being very hard on you and I am, but 90% of young vampires die within the first few months. But if you can make it a year, you have a good chance of living a century or five. Immortality is not easy. There is something about it that makes you lose a sense of time, a sense of humanity, and a sense of yourself. You have to fight to stay sane and do the right thing. If you get the urge to misbehave, think of this sting you now feel in your bottom."

Henry sniffed and nodded, "I will. I don't like getting in trouble...but this is nice."

Elijah smiled, "You can have a hug anything you want it. You don't need to get your behind whacked for that, okay. Hayley and Niklaus are also here for you, if I am not around. And our sister Freya. How about I will tuck you in every night, would that be okay?" Elijah asked quietly.

"But I'm too old. That's for little kids," Henry said shifting his sore butt a little off Elijah's lap. "And I know you are real busy."

"No, you're not too old. If you are not too old for a trip over my lap, you are not too old to be tucked in. I can bring you your last cup of blood, then you can brush and wash up, and then bed. Right at 9:45 so you can be in bed at 10," Elijah reasoned.

"But that's so early!" Henry protested. "Lisina used to let me stay up all night if I wanted. Well, she was working a lot, so she wasn't even home to know."

"Teens don't get enough sleep," Elijah added. "Now, let's get you in bed."

Henry crawled in on his stomach, though his stinging behind was already cooling. Elijah got up.

Henry balked, "Um, can you stay? Like you did before?"

Elijah nodded. He turned out the light and then got in the bed and held Henry.

"Henry, you know, we love you here. I love you," Elijah said roughly as he stoked the boy's curly hair.

Henry replied, "Love you, too." Elijah held Henry until they both fell asleep. Haley had to come in and get Elijah hours later. He grabbed the paddle and tucked it into the back of his waistband to return to the kitchen drawer.

In the hall, Elijah apologized, "Sorry, my dear. I just didn't want to leave him alone. He's so vulnerable."

Haley cringed, "Elijah, don't get too attached. Lisina called. She misses him. She wants Henry back."

"But it's too dangerous in the Bayou," Elijah countered. "I thought she understood that."

"She does. That's why she's ready to go on the run with him, if need be. She said he's her son and he ought to be with her. She doesn't seem like she will take no for an answer," Hayley explained.

"But...I promised him we would look after him!" Elijah exclaimed. "He needs a lot of structure now. Protection."

"Elijah, she's taken care of him for a decade. If the other wolves think I'm stealing people's children...I don't know what we can do," Hayley griped.

"Come on, let's think of something," Elijah said taking her arm.
