Chapter Two
Emma takes her up to her room after dinner. There's some pajamas laid out neatly on the bed for her, which she touches. "Wow. You really don't have to do all of this."
"I want to. And I'm sure Jake doesn't mind having you here for the night." Emma says, grinning.
"Please. I don't need a relationship right now." She didn't plan on returning to the realm any time soon. If ever.
"Right. Well, I'll leave you alone now." Emma turns around, and walks out of the room. Gia turns back around, touching the pajamas again. She looked around the room, which was bigger than any of the places she had stayed in during her adventures. She exhales, lying down on the bed. The last few years had been non-stop, and this was the first time in a long time that she got to relax. And she was dreading it.
She exhales again, sitting up on the bed. She grabs the pajamas which were laying at her feet. She walks into the en suite, changing into the pajamas. She has to admit that they were quite comfy, but she knew that this was all too good to be true. But Emma seemed happy to be here, and that was all that mattered to her.
She leaves the en suite, lying back down in bed. She reaches over to turn the light off, before closing her eyes.
She opens her eyes to an all white empty room. She looks around in confusion. She thinks to herself, 'where am I?'
"Gia." A female voice says, echoing through the room. She looks around for the source of the voice, sure that she couldn't be hearing her voice. Then she hears it again, but much closer. "Gia."
She turns around, nearly stumbling in shock when she sees her. She gasps, "mom?"
"It's great to see you again, but you can't be here for very long."
"I don't understand. Where are we?"
"Remember, where do the supernatural go when they die? Like heaven for humans."
"The Otherworld. But, why am I here?"
"Because there is something important that you need to know." She pauses, her tone urgent. "I have reason to believe that the board is up to something. Something bad."
What else was new? The board was always up to no-good, it was part of the reason why she left the realm. But her mother's tone made her think that it was more than the usual. "What do you mean?"
"Just… be careful who you trust." Her mother looks around frantically. "We're out of time. You have to go."
"But-"
"Now!" Her mother pushes her, and...
She wakes with a start. She shivers, suddenly cold. Her eyes dart around the room as she realizes just where she is. She grabs her chest, attempting to catch her breath, her heart beating out of her chest. She looks at the digital clock on the bedside table, the numbers 2:00 am blinking back at her. She climbs out of bed, conjuring herself up some slippers. She walks out into the hallway, then heads down the stairs. She walks into the kitchen, walking over to the fridge.
Her dream still weighs heavy on her mind. It had felt so real, yet it couldn't be real. The Otherworld was a dangerous place for the living to be, and her mother would only bring her there if she really felt that something was really really wrong. While she wouldn't be surprised if the board was up to something evil, she didn't want to believe that they would take it that far.
She sighs, opening the fridge. She pulls out a bottle of water, then closes the fridge back. As she takes a sip from the bottle, the light suddenly comes on. She jumps, spinning around, a spell at the ready. But upon seeing them, she lowers her hand. "Jake! What the hell!"
"Sorry. I didn't think anyone else would be up, let alone in the kitchen."
She inhales, putting the cap back on her water bottle. "It's fine. I was just leaving anyway."
She starts to walk away, but when she gets to the door, Jake grabs her arm. "I'm sorry, but do I know you from somewhere?"
"I don't believe you do. Now will you let go of my arm?"
He lets go of her, and she rushes out of the kitchen.
She wakes up the next morning with a sinking feeling in her chest. She doesn't feel completely right in leaving the realm, as she can't shake the feeling that something was wrong. Almost like there was something in the air. Maybe she should get in touch with some fairies? They were always more closely bonded to the elements than witches. That was one way to know for sure if she was just going crazy or not. But that would have to wait as her stomach grumbles, and the smell of food wafted through the vent.
She leaves the room, making her way to the kitchen. Emma is already there, making breakfast. "That smells good."
"Thank you. I thought you deserved a good breakfast before going back to the human world."
"Thank you. I actually need to talk to some fairies."
"Oh well I might be able to help with that after breakfast. But um if you don't mind me asking, why do you need fairies?"
"Um… no reason. Just need some help with something."
Emma raises an eyebrow, suspicion written across her face. She prepares to be questioned, but fortunately, Jake enters the kitchen, and Emma turns around to the stove. "Gia, there's someone here for you."
She raises an eyebrow. No one knew she was here. No one even knew she was in the realm. She follows Jake into the living room, where a woman was waiting with their back to them. "I'll leave you two alone."
The woman turns around, their dark hair bouncing slightly as she does. "Mrs. Goodall, this is the last place I would expect you to show your face."
Countess makes a face of disgust, looking around the room. "Believe me, this is the last place I want to be. But unfortunately, I was outvoted."
"Outvoted?"
"As I'm sure you know, your father has been banished to the Prison World. And we need someone to take his seat. And my fellow board members think that you would be the perfect replacement." Countess' voice is monotonous as she speaks, and her face matches her tone.
She doesn't know what to say. She was the last person she expected the board to ask to replace her father. Before she can even think of a response, Emma enters the room. She tenses at the sight of Countess, and Countess herself has a look of shock in her eyes. Emma swallows thickly.
"Hi… mom."
