Pietro, Wanda and Percy opted for new clothes.
Pietro grabbed some new shoes and a freshly dried blue-and-grey sweatshirt. Percy opted for what he thought was a really cool looking dark muscle shirt that showed off his biceps, with a high collar that reached up to his jaw. Pietro and Wanda both laughed as he raised his hands at them.
"What?"
"Nothing," they both said simultaneously.
"Shut up."
Pietro continued to giggle as he tossed a red jacket towards Wanda.
Once Percy was finished putting on his new muscle shirt, he was given a gift of plated armor from Tony, which was mainly just for his arms, covering from his shoulders down to his fingers. But nonetheless, Percy was grateful for the kind gift.
Everyone met up at the Quinjet, ready for war. Because if Ultron wanted a battle, a battle he was going to get.
"Ultron knows we're coming," Captain America began saying. "Odds are we'll be riding into heavy fire, and that's what we signed up for. But the people of Sokovia, they didn't. So our priority is getting them out. All they want is to live their lives in peace, and that's not going to happen today. But we can do our best to protect them. And we can get the job done, and find out what Ultron's been building. We clear the field. Keep the fight between us. Ultron thinks we're monsters and we're what's wrong with the world. This isn't just about beating him. It's about whether he's right."
It was a sophisticated speech that got Percy really thinking.
He lost count how many times he had to say the words "evacuate the city" to the citizens of Sokovia. He was going from door to door, banging on it and telling them to get out and to go where it was safe. All of the Avengers spread out through the city with tasks to do, with Percy getting picked out at a certain neighborhood and evacuating everyone there. It was a difficult task, as when he thought he was in the clear in a certain block, he'd find another person still inside their home.
After a few minutes gone by, with the giant crowd that had gathered shrinking down to just a select few trying to make their escape, Percy walked through the empty and quiet streets in his area.
"Anyone still in their homes?" Percy yelled. "If you are, your orders are to evacuate with immediate effect."
Percy got no response.
"Going once … going twice …" Percy shrugged. "Well, I guess that's everyone here."
Percy frowned in confusion as he started a bit rumbling from underneath him, stepping away as a hand randomly sprung out from the ground. The hand belonged to a robot which climbed itself out of the ground only to be end up being impaled by Percy's trident.
"Guys, a robot just crawled out the gro-o-o-ound." Percy's last word trailed off as suddenly a shit ton more robots started appearing everywhere. In the air, from buildings, crawling out of the ground, digging out of the rivers. They were coming in huge waves and the next thing Percy knew, he was being overwhelmed with robots.
Percy was attacked for the first time that day and he ricocheted the robot's blast off his trident before throwing his trident, destroying it, and drawing the weapon back into his hand.
"Get off the bridge!" Percy could hear Wanda yell behind to some civilians. She used her powers to create a force field and fend off her attackers.
Meanwhile, Percy was fighting close-range and long-range, forcing into hand-to-hand combat when a robot tried to attack him up close and throwing his trident like a lance when he was attacked by one of the flying ones.
Wanda's force field couldn't contain the blasts for too long and one ended up directly hitting her. Percy was forced into action, using the nearest stream to his aid and created a force field around himself and Wanda.
"You okay?" Percy asked.
"Yeah," she muttered in reply. "Just got me by surprise."
"Don't get tired just yet," Percy joked.
Wanda snorted. "Not a chance."
Percy stood up and used the water force field and formed them into spikes, which he sent into a good portion of the robot army, destroying them.
"Neat trick," Wanda complimented.
"If only these robots decided to invade near the beach," Percy mildly complained. "I'd tear them all apart by myself."
"Instead you get a tiny little stream," Wanda joked.
"You gotta work with what you got, right?"
"Yeah, you can keep telling yourself that."
"Are we still talking about bodies of water?"
"I don't know," Wanda replied mysteriously. "You tell me."
Percy narrowed his eyes at Wanda playfully. "I'm gonna stop before you turn the next thing I say into something dirty."
"Me? You're the one talking about 'work with what you got'," Wanda bantered.
"Alright, Wanda, whatever you say."
Before the banter between the two could go on any further, Percy felt rumbling below his feet, this one feeling even stronger than the one before. With each passing second, it felt stronger, getting to the point where it felt like a proper earthquake and not just mild rumbling. Percy and Wanda traded worried looks as the buildings around them started to crumble. A man in front of them jumped across the bridge, saving himself.
Wanda looked horrified. "Are we … are we …"
Percy ran to the edge of the bridge, which was cut off halfway through, as slowly but surely, the land they stood on started to lift itself into the air.
"What the hell," Percy muttered.
"Do you see?" Ultron's voice could be heard loud and clear, like it was coming from a city-wide PA as the city lifted about a meter high with every passing minute. "The beauty of it, the inevitability. You rise, only to fall. You, Avengers, you are my meteor, my swift and terrible sword and the Earth will crack with the weight of your failure. Purge me from your computers, turn my own flesh against me. It means nothing. When the dust settles, the only thing living in this world will be metal."
Percy looked livid. "This piece of corroded trash is really starting to irritate me."
Percy roared and slammed his trident into the ground with both hands, blowing apart a huge chunk of land that robots began to climb onto before they were sent hurtling down by the impact. He leaped onto the roof of the houses and the flying robots shot down at him like attacking birds but he would either swat them away and impale them and bring them down, destroying them on impact.
Percy looked up at the continued attackers in challenge. "You want some? Come and get some!"
He swung his trident at another that flew at him, destroying it.
"You got incoming," Tony warned over comms.
"Yeah, we know. Percy is already going crazy on a bunch of them," Clint said, shooting down another robot with his arrows before glancing back at Percy in the distance, who was literally tearing a robot in half with his bare hands.
"Stark, you worry about bringing the city back down safely," Steve said. "The rest of us have one job: tear these things apart. You get hurt, hurt 'em back. You get killed ... walk it off."
Percy took a moment to settle down, spotting Wanda dealing with a barrage of robots on her lonesome before jumping off the roof and landing back on the ground. He closed his eyes as he walked towards Wanda, concentrating as he tried to summon some aid to his will. He could hear the sounds water through the home plumbings from within, before he opened his eyes and spread his arms. Several homes next to Percy exploded as dirty water enveloped the houses and burst right through windows and roofs. Water pressure crushed every nearby robot flying or attacking around him. He stood panting as several more continued coming, but he was concerned for Wanda who was hiding inside a house, head in hands and visibly upset.
"Wanda," Percy called, sounding concerned. "What's going on?"
"I let this happen," she said. "This is all our fault."
For a second, Percy said nothing, thinking about what was the right thing to say, until it eventually came to his mind. He sighed as he kneeled next to her.
"You remember when we first met," Percy said. "How you despised Tony because of a mistake he made a long time ago, turning into something that got your parents killed?"
Wanda nodded, head still in her arms.
"That's the beauty of being human," Percy said. "We all make mistakes. Even me. This might be your fault, it might be my fault, it might be Tony's fault, it doesn't matter. Who cares? The point being, we can't dwell on the what-ifs. It if isn't Ultron, it's Loki or Attuma or someone else."
"Who's the last one you mentioned?"
"Doesn't matter. Do you understand what I'm saying?"
Wanda paused for a moment before cautiously nodding. "Yes, I understand."
"Our job right now is to save Sokovia," Percy explained. "These innocent civilians can't do anything about this attack, but us? We can. It's our gift … and our curse. We are burdened with this task, but it is one we must take upon. And I need to know if you're up for it."
Wanda sighed.
"It's okay if you're not, I'll just have you hide somewhere while I take care of these robots and at some point, your brother Pietro can come get you," Percy said. "But if you are …" he extended his hand, "I want you to take my hand and help me."
Wanda stared at Percy's hand momentarily. For a second, Percy was worried she would quit but she stretched and grabbed Percy's hand, gripping it tightly as he helped her to her feet.
"We do this," Wanda said.
"Together," Percy finished.
Percy and Wanda bursted through a door, the Sokovian girl going crazy on the robots as she shot down robots with her red magical energy and telekinesis. Behind Percy, he slammed his trident into the ground, sending a shockwave that stunned nearby robots before he destroyed them one by one. He continued his rampage with plumbing water, using jets of the water to his aid while he commanded it to do his bidding on the last few remaining that bothered around.
Wanda and Percy stood around in an empty street full of broken robot parts. The latter glanced at the former with raised eyebrows. "Huh. Looks like I have competition."
"You have to rely on a dependable water source," Wanda argued. "I can control anything with my mind at any given time. What competition?"
"Ouch," Percy said. "That is just straight up demeaning of you."
Wanda shrugged. "You work with what you have. This is what I have."
"Someday, Maximoff, I'm gonna teach you a lesson," Percy warned facetiously. "And you're not gonna expect it."
Pietro suddenly rushed in. "Did you expect this?"
He picked up his sister and rushed away just as quickly.
"Oh, it's like that?" Percy asked.
He may not have sonic-level super-speed like Pietro but he could still run pretty fast, if he did say so himself.
But it was safe to say it was still a very long sprint back to the rest of the team.
