Caroline stared at the teacher, but her mind wasn't in the classroom. She looked around to see that she wasn't the only one not paying attention. In fact, the only one who probably is paying attention would be Jesse.
Bonnie and Matt were passing notes. Well Katherine, who had taken the place of Elena at the college, was bluntly painting her nails a vibrant blood red. If it wasn't for the smell, Caroline would have almost thought that the little bottle was actually filled with blood.
Caroline let out a sigh of relief as the bell finally rang, indicating that the class was over. Instantly the students began packing their bags, only for Professor Maxfield to stop them. Caroline groaned.
Honestly, she hated how annoying the guy was. For the first five minutes, his arrogance could be classified as hot. But after the timer buzzed, you'd want to do nothing but strangle him.
There were definitely some people who could pull off total arrogance and make it look hot. Caroline thought, instinctively thinking of a certain original hybrid, but Wes Maxfield clearly wasn't one of them.
"Our class will be attending a week-long field trip to New Orleans." The professor told them, getting straight to the point. Instantly mummers began to grow around the classroom. As students excitedly talked about it.
Something akin to anticipation bloomed in Caroline's gut. But Katherine did not share her feelings. The other vampire's face had grown pale as a sheet as she thought of what, or rather who resided in New Orleans.
"You will have three days to make your decision and submit the forms. It is an all expense paid trip, so I suggest you take full advantage of it." With that final message, Maxfield walked out of the classroom.
Matt, Bonnie, Katherine and Caroline instantly got up and began walking out, intending to have a meeting in the girls dorm room. They all knew that they'd need to discuss this in great detail before any of them could make a decision.
But before the blond could reach the door. Jesse stopped her. Caroline shot her friends a look, telling them to go and that she would meet up with them later in the dorm room. She then put on her famous Miss Mystic Falls smile and turned around to face Jesse. "Hi."
The man shuffled on his feet nervously. "So, are you going to go on the trip?" he asked, rubbing the back of his head.
"I'm not sure yet." She answered truthfully. Katherine would clearly have a large target on her back in New Orleans and would constantly have to look over her shoulder. But, no matter how much she hated to admit it, a part of her did want to go to New Orleans… to see Klaus. And the flyers that occasionally showed up at her door with the best places to visit, that she had no doubt came from the hybrid, did nothing for her resistance.
But Caroline knew exactly what she'd be saying the second she signed that slip. He owned the city. She'd be showing up at Klaus's door step. Her mind couldn't help but hear his voice in the back of her head, 'Perhaps one day, in a year or even in a century. You'll turn up at my door and let me show you what the world has to offer.'
Caroline snapped out of her thoughts to catch the last little bit of Jesse's question. "... so if you were free, maybe we could get a cup of coffee?"
Caroline shook her head, "Sorry, I'm really busy."
But Jesse wasn't giving up, "How about next week?"
The baby vampire paused, thinking of the quickest and nicest way to get the man off her back. "I already have a boyfriend." Had, would have been the correct term. What Caroline did have, was a very possessive millennium old hybrid pursuing her. Who she honestly believed was not above sabotaging the competition.
"Really, where?" God damnit Jesse, Caroline resisted the urge to groan.
The hybrid and his city were still at the forefront of her mind. So Caroline found herself blurting out, "New Orleans." Before she could even think.
The smile on Jesse's face fell as he nodded awkwardly, making his exit.
Caroline walked into the dorm room where Matt and Bonnie were sitting on Bonnie's bed, with Katherine laying down on her stomach, on the bed that would have been Elena's if she had actually decided to show up.
"So what did Jesse want?" Bonnie asked.
"A date." Caroline answered, taking her heels off and climbing onto her own bed.
Katherine chuckled from the other side of the room, "Oh, I bet a certain hybrid wouldn't like that."
Caroline groaned, she already had Klaus on the brains enough as it is, without Katherine constantly bringing him up.
"You know," Caroline glared, "For someone who's been on the run from him for 500 years, you really aren't afraid to say his name."
Katherine shrugged, "Always use the proper name for things. Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself."
Matt paused, "Did you just quote Harry Potter?"
"I was bored." Was the only explanation the older vampire.
"Yeah, well, what are we gonna do about New Orleans?" Bonnie asked, getting straight to the point.
"What about it?" Caroline asked. "We just won't go"
"Really?" The doppelganger asked, raising an eyebrow. Katherine absolutely refused to believe that the baby vampire had absolutely no interest in the little trip.
"Yeah. Well the last time I checked, you weren't exactly welcome in New Orleans." Caroline answered.
"Yeah, and the last time I checked, if you ever did go. You'd probably have a parade and a red carpet rolled out for your arrival." Katherine fired back.
"Well have you considered going, well Katherine just stays back?" Matt suggests.
"Yeah no." Katherine told them. "I'm going."
"What do you mean you're going?!" Bonnie exclaimed. "You do know you going to New Orleans is basically you giving him the middle finger. Right?"
Katherine chuckled, "And that is exactly why I'm going."
"So we're all signing the slip?" Caroline asked, racing a nod from all three of her friends she sighed. "Plus, what are the chances of us running into him. New Orleans is way bigger than Mystic Falls."
"No. Fucking. Way!" Caroline growled out when they entered the plane. Bonnie stayed silent, Katherine's face palled slightly, and Matt was rendered speechless.
"Well hello to you too, future-sister-in-law." Kol chuckled quietly walking over to them.
"What are you doing here?" Bonnie seethed.
Kol was about to answer, but was pulled to the front of the plane by Max, who began introducing him to the class. "I'd like you to meet Kol Mikaelson. The younger brother of the sponsor of our trip. He'll be joining us for the flight to New Orleans."
"Did he just say sponsor?" Katherine whispered.
Kol then took a seat near the front of the group, and patted the seat next to him, sending a smile there as he waited for the sacrifice to be chosen.
Who would have to spend three hours next to the original.
Caroline nodded her head. "Bonnie."
"No." The witch shook her head. "Why do I have to do it?!"
"Why am I always Klaus bait?!" Caroline shot back. Causing Bonnie to sigh and walk down the aisle toward him.
A large smile spread across his face as he saw who they had chosen.
"I see the younger brother of the devil is pleased." Katherine said, and then whipped her head around to face Caroline. "Now, you do know I'm going to be sticking to you like glue right? Or better yet, I should have Bonnie link us."
"What?!" Caroline gasped. "No. I thought you said you wouldn't let Klaus rule your life."
"I said I wouldn't let him rule my life. This" Katherine said, gesturing around them, with her hands, "is him TAKING my life. So forgive me if I want to take precautions."
"Yeah?" Caroline asked dryly. "You know that's only going to make him angrier. So what's plan two?"
"Like I said. Stick to you like glue, and escape well you play the pretty blond distraction." Katherine told her.
"That's the best you've got?" Matt asked, surprised.
Katherine glared at him, "Well excuse you. I'm in a steel coffin taking me to my doom. I don't exactly have a lot of options." Katherine's face lit up as she got an idea. "Or maybe I could had over Joseph-"
"Jesse you mean." Caroline corrected, and Katherine just waved her off.
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever his name is. If I hand him over, Klaus would be too busy torturing him, giving me a head start."
"You're gonna throw him to the wolves?" Matt asked, shivering.
Katherine scoffed, "No. I'm gonna throw him to the hybrid."
Caroline shook her head, "That won't be needed. Relax. You know I'm not gonna let him do anything to you right?" Caroline asked. "Chicks before Dicks, Bellas before Fellas, Sisters before Misters, Hoes before Bros, Sorry Fellas that's the way it goes!" Caroline finished, laughing. Her little rhyme, did calm the older vampire down, the reassuring hand squeeze that she gave along with it, also went a long way.
Matt shook his head, smiling fondly at the display, "I'm honestly surprised he didn't try anything like this before."
"Yeah, well wouldn't exactly call his other woman well his were-slut was pregnant could he." Caroline said, glaring out the window.
"You know, it may just be a rumor. Right?" Katherine suggested.
"Yeah, and exactly when has your information ever been wrong?" Caroline asked, tears of frustration, anger and sadness gathering at her eyes.
"Yeah, well I'm pretty sure that it's all a rumor." Katherine reassured her.
"Oh yeah, then why hadn't he called me back yet!" Caroline exclaimed, getting some stares, but she ignored them.
"He must have been trying to keep you safe." Katherine offered her. "New Orleans is a battleground right now. But considering he's made this move and is bringing you there. It must mean that it's safe. Or there's now way he'd let you near something that dangerous."
Seeing her and Matt's confused face, Katherine explained herself. "You do know that the originals were taking it easy on you right. Klaus is a lot more ruthless. And for the past couple of months, New Orleans has been a battleground for a power struggle between Klaus and the so-called 'King' of New Orleans. Anyway, it only lasted this long because Klaus was taking it easy on him as well. The opposition was Klaus's old protegee, that he raised like a son, who betrayed him."
Caroline's face fell, "That's why he left."
Katherine nodded. "But like I said. He's calling you, so it must be safe."
Just then, the flight attendant went on the intercom, "Attention, passengers, We will be landing shortly. Please turn off all devices and buckle up your seatbelts."
Caroline did her seatbelt in a haze, playing with the buckle nervously as her heart felt like it was nearly going to beat out of her chest. Katherine grabbed one of her hands, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
Katherine was looking straight ahead, so she couldn't exactly tell him the hand holding was for more for her sake, or herself.
As the plane began to slow down, Caroline's heart beat only sped up.
Was Klaus really going to have a kid?
Could she convince him to let Katherine go?
Would he keep his word?
All those questions raced through her mind as anticipation built in her stomach.
She'd been expecting to see Klaus some time in New Orleans, but she just never imagined it would be so soon.
She'd probably only have another twenty minutes or so to build up her nerves.
But of course she should have known she wouldn't even get that.
Because the second she got off the plane. She saw him standing there next to his older brother. He looked exactly the same. Still dressed in a white henley and jeans. The attachments on his necklace glimmering under the sun with his dark green-blue eyes sparkling. His look was finished off with his signature smirk and dimples.
"Klaus…"
This was part 1, keep a lookout for part 2, where there will definitely be jealousy in the air. Klaus had such an effect on the story without even being there. Now that he has finally made his appearance, I'm sure we can all have somewhat of an idea of how this can go.
Anyways,
KLAROLINE FOR LIFE!
