Summary: We all know Caroline's side of the story during her high school graduation. But what about Klaus? How did he react to her calling him every ten minutes? Or her, thinking that he was over her.
Today's Special
"Sometimes the best way to get someone's attention is to stop giving them yours."
~ Unknown
Klaus had just turned his phone on, after getting off the private plan. His phone had thirty one missed calls piled up, from Caroline.
He was about to call her back, when his phone lit up from another incoming call. Klaus hummed for a moment. And decided to let it go to voicemail.
He listened to the ringtone he had chosen especially for her for about thirty seconds, before he finally heard her voice. "Klaus, now is not the time to decide that you are over me. I'm gonna call you every ten minutes until you get your ass here to save Damon's life."
The hybrid let out a chuckle. How he wished it would be that easy. He was hoping time apart from her would allow for him to forget her.
But nothing of the sort happened.
On the contrary, time away from her only made him want her more.
He missed her.
Klaus weighed his options. On one hand, he could accept the next call. On the other, he could let it continue to go to voicemail and save the messages. He still had thirty minutes before he arrived at Mystic Falls.
So if she kept her promise of calling every ten minutes. He'd get three more recordings.
Yes.
The second option sounded much more appealing.
Klaus turned to the driver, "Drive slower. We should get there in no less than an hour." he ordered, confusing the driving werewolf.
With his mind made up, Klaus once again ignored the call from the baby vampire, and instead clicked on the first voicemail she had sent him that day.
Surprisingly, the time stamp on the message read 10:00 a.m. Meaning this would likely have been before Damon got poisoned.
"Klaus," Caroline's nervous voice rang out. "I know you really don't have a reason to come," he heard her pause, probably second guessing what she was about to say.
Klaus resisted the urge to let out a growl. Did she really think that she'd call, and he wouldn't come. She was all the reason he needed to drop everything and come. He was tempted to just let Damon die today, as a message to the Mystic Falls gang of undermining the bay vampire's confidence. He was snapped out of his anger by Caroline speaking again.
"But, I wouldn't be here right now if it wasn't for you. So… I'm really hoping I'd see you there. But, I totally get if you can't come. I mean you are the original hybrid after all. I mean you probably have your hands full with countless other things than making it to someone's graduation."
She wasn't just someone, Klaus thought, continuing to listen to the message. He had missed some parts. But that was fine. It isn't exactly like he was ever going to delete it. He'd probably have the messages backed up on several different phones when he got the time, just in case anything happened to this one. "...anyway, I'm rambling now. See you later?" Caroline finished off, almost as if she was asking if he would show up or not.
Yeah right, as if that even need to be asked.
When she'd let him. He need to teach her exactly what her value was. Until that day came, he was content to wait patiently. After all, they do have eternity.
Caroline bent over, clenching her head in pain. A part of herself felt like she deserved to feel every ounce of this pain.
No matter the reason, she killed twelve witches, and now, they were getting they're revenge.
Something flew over the blonds head without touching a single strand of hair. Effortlessly decapitating the witch behind the aneurysm spell.
"There are plenty more of these to go around. Who's next? I can do this all day." Klaus said, waving around a red graduation cap. Well everyone else could only hear the relaxed tone with a bit of humor in his voice. Caroline could tell, even without turning around that Klaus was feeling more than a little murderous.
Caroline turned around, despite the situation, she couldn't help but smile.
He came.
Klaus felt his muscles relax a little, seeing that his baby vampire was relatively unharmed. Klaus had wanted today to be a happy day for her. But these witches just had to ruin it. Klaus thought, glaring at the eleven remaining witches.
The witches flinched at the look on his face, but Klaus quickly put on his relaxed expression again, throwing the graduation cap into the air a little and catching it again, he smiled, "I was in a pretty good mood... but clearly that's changed. So again, who's next?"
Caroline asked, as she saw a certain hybrid walk toward her that night. "How'd you get here so fast?"
Klaus smiled, "I was already on my way." Caroline raises her eyebrows, the smile on her face a little coy, but leaning strongly towards genuine shyness.
Klaus pulled out a piece of paper from inside his coat, "I received your graduation announcement. It was...very subtle."
Smiling, Caroline shuts her eyes, she shifted her weight onto her other leg in an effort to distract herself. She had honestly spent thirty minutes in front of the mailbox debating if she was going to send it or not. But in the end, just as the mailman rolled around. Her urge to see Klaus, over powered her sense of reasoning. She found her body listening to her heart, and not her brain as she handed over the invite to be sent.
"I assume you're expecting cash?" Klaus asked, humor in his voice.
"That, or a mini fridge." Caroline answered.
Klaus walked a bit closer to her, "Well, I had considered offering you a first class ticket to join me in New Orleans...but I knew what your answer would be." Caroline almost hated the part of herself that was one step away from stopping the hybrid and telling him she'd take the ticket. "So, I opted for something I knew you would accept."
Caroline looked at him, wondering what he'd say. "Tyler is now free to return to Mystic Falls."
Caroline felt her stomach drop and dread begin to creep up. She found herself asking, "What?" Caroline definitely wanted Tyler to come back. But now, she was unsure if she wanted him to come back as her boyfriend, or only as a friend…
Klaus nodded slightly, "He's your first love. I intend to be your last, however long it takes." He leaned down and kissed her on the cheek. "Congratulations, Caroline."
Caroline's eyes widened as she realised what he meant.
He wasn't over her!
Despite all she'd done to him. All the times she'd shut him down, carelessly.
He was willing to wait for her.
However long it takes…
The blond haired girl laughed softly as her spirts lifted and she felt as if a thousand butterflies were fluttering around in her stomach. He had listened to her message.
Klaus smiled, "Let's get out of here, before twelve angry hybrids decide to pick a fight." He offered his hand to the baby vampire. Who, without hesitation, placed her hand on his.
At that moment she placed not only her hand, but her trust, and her heart in him as well.
Sixty years later, when Caroline showed up at Klaus's door. Ready to Collect a debt. She discovered that she wasn't the only one who saved voicemails.
I added some of my own touches to the scenes, just to please the huge Klaroline shipper (That can never be satisfied - who can blame me, there isn't enough Klaroline in the world, let alone The Vampire Diaries) in me some more.
Anyways,
KLAROLINE FOR LIFE!
