Chapter 2: Arise, ABBA & Bucciarati!
"Bruno… You of all people should know about my resentment towards police… Right?" ABBA questioned Bruno, who was busy shimmying on a black coat over his shoulders.
"Yes… Why?" Bucciarati responded as he buttoned up the black coat, fumbling a bit as he was wearing white gloves.
"So why the hell am I dressed up as one?" ABBA angerly yelled at Bucciarati as they are decked out in a constable's uniform.
"Because ABBA… Giorno and maybe his family won't question if two officers are bringing him in for questioning… I promise this is a onetime thing, and I am sorry." Bucciarati explained to ABBA as he puts on a domed police hat.
"After we take care of him, I am not going to speak with you for the rest of the week…" ABBA threatened, causing Bucciarati to stop before gleaming in delight, hurrying toward the Joestar residence.
A month after the Steel Ball Run, Hot Pants, a Nun who pretended to be a man to partake in the Steel Ball Run race to retrieve the Saint's Corpse parts on behalf of her Papal Covenant fell graciously ill. Lucy Steele, Hot Pants's best friend became awfully worried and contacted the best doctors in the area to run some tests on her, to see what was causing her to have such violent nausea. During that time, all of the doctors made a shocking medical discovery. Hot Pants was in fact, pregnant. During the time of her pregnancy, Johnny Joestar gave a deed to a house in Little Italy, Manhattan to Hot Pants; however, Hot Pants had previously disowned her own last name, but Johnny Joestar came up with a solution, have Hot Pants legally adopt the last name of "Joestar," serving as an adopted sister to the British Jockey.
Giorno Joestar was born in 1890. Soon after, Hot Pants, despite being medically diagnose with depression began to work as a farmhand on a ranch, but instead of leaving Giorno all by himself in his house, Lucy Steele assumed the role of Giorno's babysitter, becoming very fond of the toddler and becoming… Quite overbearing in her affection. Despite all of the comfort given to him by Lucy and Hot Pants, Giorno still felt suffocated, as he grew up without a father, he was never taught how to make friends, so Giorno needed to teach himself how to. And the way he taught himself was by raising hell and causing trouble.
From an incredibly early age Giorno had often found himself running from the police, but his stand, [Golden Years] which he inherited at birth helped him slip away from the officer's grasp. However, an incident when he was 4 years old caused him to have a deep hatred for drugs, and the fact it was being sold to the wider public, including children. Soon after, Giorno mellowed out a bit, becoming more reserved but is still a happy boy.
Giorno sleepily walked down the steel steps of his small house. Glancing around bottom floor, between the brick walled living room and the pristine white walls of the dining room that sat beside it. In the dining room sat a short blonde woman wearing what seems to be a nice suit, with a very dark green windbreaker and skirt, peacefully reading a newspaper. Giorno already knew who it was and cracked open a mischievous smile. Using [Golden Years] he transformed himself into a house cat, sneakily walking down the metal steps and up to the blonde woman; slowly he turned back into his normal human self, quietly tip toeing up to the woman with his hands hovering on the side of his head.
"MORNING AUNT LUCY!" Giorno yelled out as he grabbed the woman by her shoulders.
The woman yelped out in shock and could've jumped 15 feet in the air had it not been for Giorno holding her down by her shoulders. After a few seconds of panting and recomposure, the blond woman, Lucy Steele turned around to look at Giorno and into his crystal blue eyes. Lucy gleamed with joy at the sight of him.
"Good morning, Gio-Jo~ How did you sleep?" Lucy asked as he began to pinch Giorno's soft cheeks, warping it in a loving manner.
"I- Slept well. Ow, Aunt Lucy for a small woman such as yourself you sure are strong!" Giorno complained as Lucy squished his cheeks.
"Well, you can't exactly be a government agent if you're not strong~" She cooed as Giorno meticulously pried her fingers away from his now sore cheeks.
"Jeez, you're the coolest, anyways is there any breakfast?" Giorno asked as he massaged his cheek.
"Yes, there's some vegetable stew and some biscuits that yours truly baked for you!"
"Oh, cool!" Giorno quickly poured himself a bowl and grabbed a biscuit for himself before dashing towards the stairs. "I'm going to eat in my room, I am currently reading the Divina Commedia, by Dante, and I'm too invested to stop now."
"Okay!" Lucy responded in a sweet and upbeat tone. (Think back to Holly's "Okay~" from Stardust Crusaders) "Have fun~"
Giorno waved before disappearing upstairs into his room to read and eat, causing Lucy to chuckle to herself. Ah… I remember when Giorno liked to get himself into trouble. I remember that one time when I watched him run from the police after stealing a bar of chocolate. But suddenly he used [Golden Years] to turn himself into a Yorkie and pee on a fire hydrant. To this day I still don't know if he did it to sell the illusion of him being a dog, or if he actually needed to relieve himself. I tried asking him, but he just brushed off the question, I never told Hot Pants about it, but it is a good memory I have of Gio-Jo when he was younger… Lucy thought to himself has she thought about Giorno, until a knock on the front door broke her train of thought.
She stood up, walked to the door and opened it up, only to find two officers standing in front of her, one looked like they had purple lipstick on, and the was holding his domed hat to the side, showing off his bowl cut. ABBA and Bucciarati.
"Hello ma'am, is this the Joestar residence?" The shorter one with the bowl cut asked Lucy.
"Y- Yes, why, is there a-"
"Is Giorno Joestar here? We'd like to ask him a few questions…"
"Um… Yes, he's… GIO-JO!" Lucy called Giorno. Soon Giorno, with a biscuit wedged in his mouth peered his head through the stairs. "There are some officers here that want to speak with you…" Lucy sounded evidently worried, as it has been a while since Giorno has caused some trouble, but maybe now the actions of his past are beginning to catch up to him.
Giorno blinked a few times before biting down one the biscuit and taking it out of his mouth. Leisurely he walked downstairs, holding onto the biscuit before going up to the trio by the door. ABBA and Bucciarati glanced at each other in surprise to see the one responsible for Luca's death was just a kid, 17 just like… Giorno placed his hand on Lucy's shoulder giving her a reassuring smile.
"It is okay, Aunt Lucy. I'll be fine… Don't tell mom about this, okay?"
"H- How can I not? The Police never knocked on your door before… What's happening?" Lucy was interrupted by Giorno as he put up a hand to shut her up.
"No. Swear on the soul of Uncle Johnny that you will not tell my mom that this happened." Giorno said, pointing at Lucy nonjudgmentally. Johnny had been dead for about 6 years now, and Giorno never asked anyone to swear on the souls of the deceased, let alone his Uncle Johnny's. Lucy's eyes widened and she exhaled, semi-offended at what Giorno was asking her to do. But she relented, drooping her face on the edge of tears before nodding slightly. "Don't worry about me. I'll be back, I promise."
A promise is a promise… Giorno thought to himself, knowing the truth about these officers, and fully comprehending the gravity of the situation presented to him. Giorno, ABBA, and Bucciarati all walk out the door, leaving Lucy alone in the house.
Don't die Giorno… I can't lose you too…
The trio walked down the streets, aimlessly. ABBA and Bucciarati walked behind Giorno who was in front, so he wouldn't be to take a good look at their face, not that it was going to help them either way.
However, ABBA and Bucciarati were having their own, silent conversation, using their eyes to communicate with one another… Being with each other for so long, they completely understand each other through motions.
Giorno is just a kid… Are you sure that he was the one who killed Luca? Bucciarati asked.
[Ring-Ring] never lies. He sounds exactly like the guy who ripped Luca apart… Before… There were a few things that Bucciarati couldn't interpret through these motions. ABBA's face drooping was one of them.
He's only a kid. The same age as the others…
And? Killing Luca is confirmation that he is a threat, not only to the district, but Passione as a whole. Polpo told us to kill him… And that's what we are going to do…
"Yeah… I honestly don't think you guys are officers… Are you?" Giorno asked, head still facing forward as he walked.
"What gave us away?" Bucciarati asked, seeing no point in continuing to uphold the charade.
"Lipstick and Bowl cuts aren't exactly under NYPD uniform regulation. Also, the station is that-a-way…" Giorno pointed his thumb behind him. "I should know… I run away from those bastards more often than I should…"
"You'd be correct kid… But we didn't lie to your… Mother? Aunt? Eh who cares… We didn't lie to her when we said we were there to ask you a few questions…" ABBA said.
"Oh? Well then, what are you going to ask me?" Giorno asked, looking at ABBA in the corner of his eye.
"Did you murder a man named Luca DiMaggio?" Bruno asked.
"Mr. Luca? Seeing that you're not cops, I'll give you the straight answer. Yes." Bluntly answered, with not a shred of regret.
"WHY?" Bruno got closer to Giorno's ear, yelling into it causing the pink haired boy to flinch.
"He swindled $5 from me when I helped him move some boxes. But that's not why I killed him, not even a quarter of the reason. He had been poisoning kids and adults alike, by lacing the pizzas with cocaine-"
"LIAR." Bucciarati screamed out, wanting to beat the ever-loving shit out of the pink haired kid, only being held back by the arm of his partner. "I KNEW LUCA! HE WOULD NEVER DO SUCH A THING…"
"Don't kill him Bruno… Not yet…" ABBA whispered into Bucciarati's ear.
"You must have not known him that well. Because he showed me, he told me why the Pizza House got so many customers… They were addicted to it, to the secret ingredient. It was gross, unforgivable."
Bucciarati grit his teeth so hard he thought he was going to break it. Luca… getting kids hooked to drugs? No… It can't be… He had an oath… We had an oath. No, this kid is obviously lying… "Take the next left…" Bucciarati hissed with enough venom to kill 100 elephants.
Giorno did what he was told, turning into an alleyway, walking to a dead end. He was ordered by ABBA to continue facing the wall, which he did, even when he heard the sounds of pistols loading.
"From the tone of your reaction to the truth about Luca… You seem to hate drugs as much as I do…" Giorno said, eyes looking down onto the bitten biscuit he intended to have for breakfast.
"Shut up." ABBA ordered as they put another bullet into their revolver. Giorno, however, didn't.
"What's your name sir?"
"That doesn't matter…" Bucciarati said as he shakingly put the last 9mm bullet into the loading port of his Luger before priming it.
"If you were to learn the truth yourself about Mr. Luca, you would have done the exact same thing…" Giorno said, hearing the priming handle pull back. "But as he said… the game was rigged from the start- [GOLDEN YEARS]!" Giorno yelled out throwing the biscuit into the air as ABBA and Bucciarati fired at him.
The smoke cleared, and the gangsters realized that Giorno was gone, his body disappeared. Above them, the biscuit that was thrown into the air turned itself into a snake, falling down and landing on ABBA, biting their neck. ABBA let out a pained yelp, tearing it of their neck, throwing it on the ground and shooting it, causing it to turn back into a biscuit. The snake was not poisonous only giving ABBA a flesh wound on their neck.
"The Stronzo is a stand user? Shit. Where did he go?" Bucciarati looked around for Giorno, finding no one, aside from ABBA.
"Down here…" A small voice spoke to the gangster.
Looking down, Bucciarati saw a cockroach idle on the ground. Bucciarati bent down to see if the cockroach was actually talking and that he wasn't going insane; but as he did, Giorno transformed himself into a human, uppercutting Bucciarati in the jaw, sending him flying backwards. ABBA pointed their revolver at Giorno, but the pink haired boy kicked the gun out of their hands, before running out of the alley onto the street.
"He's making a run for it; I'll chase after him! You cut him off." ABBA yelled at Bucciarati before grabbing their revolver and running after the pink haired kid.
Giorno sprinted down the urban streets of Manhattan, dodging people and the bullets coming from ABBA's revolver. ABBA ditched the constable domed helmet and took off their disguise's jacket in favor of their white shirt underneath. Giorno masterfully turned the corner at full speed without skidding, however he grinded to a halt when he was a hole open up in a building's wall. A perfect circle, masterfully cut, and in it was Bucciarati with what seemed to be a silhouette of a robotic-like robot, wearing a German Pickelhaube (German Spiked Helmet).
Bucciarati pointed his revolver at Giorno, shooting him 4 times at extremely close range, but Giorno dodged all of these by turning himself into a hummingbird and flying backwards. The hell was THAT thing? Giorno thought back to the mechanical, humanoid. Giorno did a backflip turning back into himself midair before grabbing a trashcan lid, throwing it like a frisbee at Bucciarati.
"[BETWEEN BUTTONS]!" Bucciarati yelled out as the silhouette from earlier appears once more, but his time, in full color, punching the trash can lid, causing it to become translucent and phase through Bucciarati.
The figure stood about as tall as Bucciarati, with a black pickelhaube on its head, covering where it's eyes should be, with a yellow spike on top. The lower half was bonier, more skull shaped. On its mandibles was a row of golden teeth. Its body seemed skinnier, mechanical, with hinges and "wires" running under its black padded armor, and large buttons on its knuckles and shoulder blades.
"You seemed surprised…" Bucciarati smirked pointing at the figure in front of him. "What you are looking at is what is known as a Stand. My stand. Its name is [Between Buttons] and it can produce buttons, and whatever it touches become translucent, and intangible, making it easy to phase through walls, or to prevent projectiles from hitting me…"
"I know what stands are, dumbass. I just want to know how the hell you got one without the Corpse Parts." Giorno yelled at Bucciarati.
He was taught about Stands when he was very young, by Johnny Joestar and his mother Hot Pants, both stand users. And discovered HIS stand ability at the age of four… But that is a story for another day. However, Johnny and Hot Pants only unlocked their stands via the Holy Corpse Parts or by the Devils Palms.
"Corpse Parts? The hell are you talking about?"
"It doesn't matter. You can surrender now, but if you intend on fighting to the death… So be it…" Giorno said as he transformed himself into a Utahraptor.
Bruno gasped before mag dumping the dinosaur, but his 9mm bullets and low stopping power were ineffective against the thick hide of the Utahraptor realizing that he was screwed if he didn't do anything he jumped to the side as Giorno attempted to clamp down on his, using [Between Buttons] to punch the brick wall beside him, causing him to phase through it. Giorno used the eye of the right side of his utahraptor's form to watch as the hole closes. Instead of trying to pursue Bucciarati, Giorno decided to look for ABBA once again, to attack them, to force Bucciarati out of hiding.
ABBA held their revolver in front of them, pointing at every available corner, so they won't get blindsided by Giorno. Suddenly they see a crow fly above them, not taking any chances they shoot the bird out of midair, watching at its feathers explode off of it, watching as it fell to the ground with an unceremonious thunk, watching as it bled and convulsed, twitching on the floor.
"Merda! That was just a pigeon!" ABBA gasped.
"You're right, I'm right behind you…" Giorno growled, pouncing on ABBA in him human form.
He pinned ABBA to the floor, wrestling the pistol out of their grasp, throwing away the revolver away from them. He jumped up, transforming into a rottweiler before beginning to maw on ABBA's arm as they attempted to stand up. Giorno wasn't intent on killing ABBA, he only wanted to drag Bucciarati out of hiding. Giorno rolled, transforming himself back into his human form, kicking them down. He got on top of ABBA to punch them in the face but when he executed his punch, he noticed right arm up to his elbow turned translucent, phasing through ABBA's face harmlessly.
"Shit!" Giorno yelped, jumping backwards, inspecting him arm.
It was still visible, if barely. It still had articulation, although it felt numb, able to pass his left arm through it. [Between Buttons] did this… So that means Bowl Cut is nearby. Giorno looked up and saw Bucciarati flipping over in midair, pointing and shooting the luger down at him. Giorno tried to dodge but was struck in the leg by shrapnel causing him to yelp loudly, stumbling into an alley, leaving a trail of blood. Instead of immediately pursuing him, Bucciarati immediately went up to ABBA, inspecting them.
"ABBA! Are you okay?" He asked, worried.
"Yeah- Jesus, Bruno, I am fine." ABBA pushed Bucciarati's face away from their, looking at their right arm, where they got bit by Rottweiler Giorno. For as deep as the wound is, it wasn't bleeding. "Let's go get that Stronzo."
ABBA was semi disoriented, because they were rag dolled all over the place by Giorno.
As for Gio-Jo, he was gripping at his bleed leg, behind a trashcan.
"Damn it!" He hissed as he jammed his index finger and thumb into the gunshot wound, carefully pulling out the 9mm bullet Bucciarati shot him with. Next, he put his still tangible hand over the bullet wound, and it began to glow yellow, lifting it up it is revealed that the gunshot wound was gone, healed completely.
Giorno heard multiple footsteps approaching him. Looking around him, he realized exactly where he was, he knew exactly what he was hiding behind. He smirks. Looking at his clear right arm, it's going to be hard to fight the gangsters without it, but he didn't need it.
"Come out Joestar…" ABBA called out for Giorno.
"Gladly…" He spun himself around kicking the trashcan he hid behind as hard as he could.
It flew at the gangsters in such a way that [Between Buttons] couldn't save both of them, but Bucciarati still used his stand to try to defend himself, the still opaque part of the trashcan still struck ABBA directly on their nose, knocking them over. And through the hole that Bucciarati made using his stand, Giorno used his left hand to punch Bucciarati in the chin, knocking him over as well. And like that… The fight was over.
The effects of [Between Buttons] on Giorno's right arm began to fade away as Bucciarati was semi-unconscious, tightening his hand into a fist, regaining feeling in his limb. He picked up both Gangster's dropped guns.
"Merda… We got out asses handed to us by a goddamn kid. This is the last time I'm going to fight for you…" ABBA said, as they laid on the ground.
"Ugh… I don't blame you…" Bucciarati responded, writhing on the floor.
As they tried to stand up, they heard the clicking of their guns, turning to see Giorno pointing at both of them with a pistol in each hand, standing 5 meters away.
"Stand down both of you. Final warning…" Giorno said, with no faltering in his voice, no empty threats, only a promise. "Your stand is versatile, but it only has a range of about 6 feet (2 meters)."
ABBA and Bucciarati relented, laying back down on the concrete. Giorno glances around the alley he is in, still pointing the guns at the two gangsters.
"Do you recognize this alley?" Giorno spoke, as ABBA and Bucciarati looked around. The two widened their eyes as they do, in fact, recognize the alley. It was the one the led to the back entrance of Luca's Pizza House… The same one where he was murdered in. "Oh, so you do… Well, look behind you."
Bucciarati hesitantly complied, looking back, looking at the trash can that was affected by [Between Buttons], looking at its contents… Cocaine.
"W- What…" Bucciarati was at a loss for words, he was horrified.
"When I learned Luca's scheme, he was going to execute me… But before he could pull the trigger, he told me 'Getting tricked and genius secret marketing strategies ain't the same thing.'" Giorno said as he kicked another trashcan aside, revealing Luca's dropped Ivory Handle Revolver.
Bucciarati gasped. That was something that Luca would say… He didn't know what to do now… Only turning to ABBA.
"ABBA… Use [Ring-Ring] to confirm his word…" Bucciarati whispered to his partner.
"Bucciarati-"
"NOW!"
ABBA didn't say anything else, only summoning their blue rotary phone stand, and putting the receiver do their ear. Bucciarati waited for what seemed like an excruciatingly long 3 minutes, only for ABBA to give him the receiver. Bucciarati put the receiver up to his ear with a shaky hand, listening in on the conversation.
Do you know why this Pizza House is so popular? Because the chefs infuse the coke in very tiny portions into the ingredients, causing the people that eat it to get hooked and keep coming back. Luca's voice spoke through the receiver.
Bucciarati let out an agonizing cry of betrayal, throwing the receiver away, or as far as the wire connected to [Ring-Ring] itself would allow it to go. He seemed to crumple up into a ball, Giorno and ABBA looking on, somberly.
"We had an oath… Luca… Why on earth would you break it…"
