Chapter 30: Match of the Millennium - Yuugi vs. Pegasus Part 4

"Now, the Shadow Games will begin." Pegasus grinned as the wave of darkness washed over the arena.

"The whole arena..." Yuugi gaped. "Is being taken over by darkness."

"The Shadow Game?" Anzu echoed, seeing the two duelists were engulfed in a sphere of darkness.

"What's about to start?" Jonouchi wondered.

"Oi!" Honda shouted.

"Honda!" Jonouchi looked at his best friend who had the unconscious Mokuba under his arm and Bakura over his shoulder. "Those two...!"

"I was able to rescue Mokuba." Honda wheezed for breath.

"What's wrong with Bakura?" Anzu asked, after Honda set the two down.

"It's alright." Honda assured. "He's just unconscious. It's here too?" he spotted the darkness sphere in the arena.

"Here too?" Ami's mental warning bells were set off.

"To be honest, I don't believe it either." Honda admitted.

"What happened?" Ami pressed. "Tell us."

"A Shadow Game." Honda replied.

"I can't tell anything from up here." Anzu remarked.

"Let's go down and take a look." Jonouchi suggested.

"What is this?" Jonouchi wondered, the group having arrived outside the crackling energy sphere.

"From this point on, this is a wizard's battle that no normal being can endure." Pegasus chuckled. "Yuugi boy, I wonder how your other mind will hold up."

My other self can't handle this Shadow Game. Yami Yuugi realized. "My other self, I'll draw the cards from now on." he swapped.

But if we don't fight together, Pegasus' Millennium Eye will be able to see through you again. Yuugi protested. I'll be alright. Let me fight with you again.

Alright. Yami Yuugi relented.

"My turn." Pegasus drew his card. "'Dark Eye Illusionist' in Attack mode. In a Shadow Game, the Duel Rings Kaiba Corporation created are no longer active. The players' willpower literally brings the monsters to life. And if that willpower should run out, the player's life might also run out as well."

"I call 'Curse of Dragon' on the field." Yami Yuugi played his monster. "Turn over."

I'll take over and let you think of a plan. Yuugi suggested.

Mind Shuffle... Pegasus mused, seeing Yuugi had taken over. So you switched souls again, keeping me from reading your mind? However, the other Yuugi boy lacks the mentality needed to fight this battle.

"What's going on?" Yuugi wondered. "My chest hurts."

The burden of maintaining the monsters' real form is draining the other me's willpower... Yami Yuugi realized. Hang in there, other me.

As I thought, the other Yuugi is merely a normal human. Pegasus' Millennium Eye glinted. He'll soon run out of power.

"What's wrong, Ami?" Anzu asked, her eye catching the slight wince the girl genius displayed on her face.

"I can feel it..." Ami whispered, her dark eyes trained towards the energy sphere. "Yuugi's in pain inside the energy bubble."

"You felt it too, then." Jonouchi noted. "A second ago, my chest just hurt."

"Me too." Honda admitted. "Not long ago, I saw Bakura bring the monsters on his cards to life using what he called 'The Power of Darkness'.

"Could it be..." Jonouchi turned to the sealed off arena.

"I'm sure we've experienced this 'Power of Darkness' before." Anzu ascertained.

"I will set a card face-down on the field." Pegasus took his turn. "Turn over."

There's a limit to my other me's mental strength. Yami Yuugi mused, seeing Yuugi's shaking hand. I can't let this battle drag on any longer. "On my turn, I'll attack with 'Curse of Dragon'." he swapped in.

You have fallen for it. Pegasus chuckled. You rushed into battle to protect the other Yuugi. That was my aim. "I activate 'Dark Eye Illusionist's' special ability: Dark Eyes Magic! In exchange for having no Attack or Defense points, it is given a special ability. Using the power of its Evil Eye, 'Dark Eyes Illusionist' can steal away its opponent's abilities. But the true terror of my Illusion monsters have just begun. 'Black Illusion Ritual'!" he flipped opened his face-down card. "I will activated this card with 'Dark Eyes Illusionist'. I summon the Illusion monster, 'Relinquished'! I activate ' Relinquished's special ability."

"What?" Yami Yuugi was shocked when 'Curse of Dragon' was absorbed into the newly summoned monster. "'Curse of Dragon' is..."

"My turn is over." Pegasus ended his turn.

"'Black Magician', attack 'Relinquished'." Yami Yuugi instructed.

"'Relinquished Shield!" Pegasus countered, using the absorbed 'Curse of Dragon' to take the attack. "'Black Magician's attack has taken out 'Curse of Dragon'. 'Relinquished' gains the Attack and Defense of any of the opponent's monsters it absorbs. And of course, when the player attacks the shield of 'Relinquished', they take damage to their own Life. My turn. I use 'Relinquished's special ability. I activate Dark Eyes Magic. Control 'Black Magician' with the Evil Eye's spell. Be absorbed by 'Relinquished'. 'Relinquished' now gains the Attack and Defense points of your 'Black Magician'." he grinned. "If you attack him, your own Life will be reduced. What will you do, Yuugi boy?" he taunted. This is my invincible Illusion Combo.

You can't give up! Yuugi encouraged. If you don't take action, Pegasus will just read your mind. I'll buy you some time to think of a plan.

Your mental strength is already at its limit. Yami Yuugi protested. You can't risk it.

No, I want to fight. Yuugi argued. To the end.

If your mental strength should reach its limit, your soul will eternally... Yami Yuugi trailed. Yuugi... you... he breathed, seeing the determined look on his vassal's face.

"It's my turn." Yuugi swapped back in.

Your mind is fading away. Pegasus smirked, seeing Yuugi reach out with a shaky hand.

Please, let me draw one final card... Yuugi pleaded. A card that can defeat Pegasus."I set a card face-down." he drew and set the card. "'Feral Imp' in Defense mode." My other self... use this card to defeat Pegasus...

It seems this is the end of the line for the other mind. Pegasus mused. "'Relinquished' attack! 'Illusion Black Magic'!"

Hang in there, other me! Yami Yuugi held on to his vassal as 'Feral Imp' was destroyed.

"You have to defeat Pegasus..." Yuugi muttered, falling over.

"Yuugi..." Ami whispered. "I knew it; a Shadow Game is too much for him."

"Could something have happened to Yuugi?" Honda asked.

"Are we really not able to get into that field of darkness?" Jonouchi wondered.

"Can all we do is just stand here and do nothing?" Honda hissed.

"Yuugi!" Anzu was about to run into the sphere when Ami pulled her back.

"Once a Shadow Game starts, normal humans cannot interfere." Ami explained. "In truth, I don't want to use this power this early. But since Yuugi's life is on the line, I have no other choice. Everyone," she turned to the other three. "Please, I beg of you, lend me your powers."

"Pegasus," Yami Yuugi took over. "I'll never forgive you."

"However, Yuugi boy, now that your other mind has disappeared, the only thing stopping my Millennium Eye, your Mind Shuffle, has been sealed away." Pegasus reminded. "Even so, you still intend on continuing the duel?"

"Of course!" Yami Yuugi snapped. "Until my heart breaks into two, there's no 'Game Over'."

"Continue the game." Pegasus declared. "It's your turn, Yuugi boy. Mind Scan!" he activated the Millennium Eye once Yami Yuugi drew his next card. "The card you have just drawn is 'Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress'."

"'Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress' in Defense mode." Yami Yuugi played his card. "Turn over."

"In that case, it's my turn." Pegasus took his turn. "'Relinquished' Illusion: Black Magic! 'Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress' has been defeated." he took out the dragon. "And the 'Jigen Bakudan' card. 'Jigen Bakudan' is a self-destructing monster that cannot be attacked. In two turns, its Special Ability will destroy every monster on my side of the field. In other words, 'Relinquished' will be destroyed by 'Jigen Bakudan'. Yuugi boy, your monster as well. Yuugi boy, can you stop this combo? You walk the path of destruction! That is the 'Relinquished' combo! As long as I have the Mind Scan, you can't do a single thing. You lose! It's game over."
