I stood up dusty but proud as I fixed a broken shelf I found in the barn. I did much better with the nails this time around. With a good paint job and I have a shelf for all the books and notes of my grandpa. I leaned on my door frame thinking of paint colors. I wanted more color but can't go wrong with gray and white as some may not like color.
I know Pierre only has wallpaper but Joja mart has to have paint and I still have that coupon. I got semi clean and headed out to find the place. It was a large building that blocked a view of a wonderful river with a parking lot that went right up to the building like normal.
It was a nice looking building for the city but an eyesore here.
The air conditioning was so strong I was slightly chilly as I grabbed one there oversized carts and just started to look around. I came for a purpose but could not stop myself from buying a large bag of chips and a pack of cheep socks. I also found cheep new blankets and pillows in light pink.
I could not find the paint isle when I noticed a blue vest down an isle stacking something. "Excuse me." He looked up at me slightly annoyed, it was that guy Shane making me give him a weird smile. "Where is the paint?"
He stood up like this was a chore and pointed me to a different isle where most of the stuff I need would be before turning away and getting back to his job.
"How is it working here?" I spit out, this is the first time we talked, he was one of the people that I would not mind meeting.
"It is a joy." He spoke with no real excitement like he was supposed to say that, making me smile.
"I am sure it is." But I did not move.
"Can I help you with anything else?" He asked annoyed but I just shook my head. "Then please move on as I am busy."
He was so angry so I turned and followed his directions, that could have gone better.
Man this was the perfect aisle, with a 50% coupon and I read it, it really was 50% off your whole order so I may as well go crazy, to an extent, the more I buy the better the deal.
I found some wooden wall lamps to lighten the kitchen. Some gray tile you place over existing tile, something I can do and grabbed paint before I strolled seeing what they have.
"Well you are just going crazy on that old farm huh?" I heard a male voice speak making me look up from the shelf. There was a man I don't know, he had dark wild brown hair, big thick glasses and a dark green jacket and pants I can only describe as slacks.
I looked up at him confused with my eyebrows furrowed and it made him nervous. "Hi, sorry, I um, I am Harvey, the closest thing to a doctor around here." He smiled his small porn star mustache moved with it.
"Oh, well I am Cy but I take it you know that." As I put the small cup I was looking at back on the shelf.
"I think by now everyone knows who you are."
"Well that is weird." I joked even if it sounded mean as I looked back at him, there was something kind and friendly about him and he made me feel at ease, he looked a few years above me.
"You ever live on a farm before?" He asked, awkwardly.
"Not at all, you?" I gave a small smile to hopefully not seem like a bitch to this guy who went out of his way to talk to me.
He chuckled. "Never, I even live above the clinic." He had a nice smile. "Never even grew a plant." I gave a small smirk "So what are you doing exactly?"
"Well, cleaning and fixing up the cabin is first."
He started to follow me as he asked questions, I was vague but I answered, I did not mind. He would point things out and my most common word was maybe, I could not tell him but his sense of decoration was terrible. I stopped as I passed a decent sized flat t.v that was already half off, fuck it I could take it home. Better then the old box that sits looking like an eye sore taking up so much space.
He kindly helped me get it onto the basket that sat under the cart. It started to feel like I have known him forever when he pointed out this cute big brown fuzzy rug and for once I liked his idea making me shove it into my cart, will help sitting on the floor for now. It was really soft.
He looked at his watch and had to go, I said bye as he walked off with just a small bag of candy.
I walked up to the one register open but this place was empty and there was no line, she was startled at the amount of shit I had but started to check them off while putting the small stuff in boxes. I watched as the number grew, man it was high giving me a heart attack when I handed over the coupon. We shared a smile when it cut that right in half "well, that was useful." She joked. "Don't let the owner know about this."
"He gave it to me." I smiled.
She looked around and leaned in close. "Well you did an amazing job at screwing him over." She gave a sweet smile. "Let me get someone to help you get this in your car."
"I prob.."
"Shane." She yelled making me look at him, he was pushing a stack of can's and looked our way like the world just ended. "Help this lovely lady." I watched his shoulder's drop as he walked towards us.
I could do it myself but I kind of wanted him to help me. A second shot at a conversation, he intrigues me.
I moved to push the cart but he took over a little roughly getting me out of the way. The hot air hit my face and the sun made me blink as I followed him to my truck. "This place is so empty compared to the one in the city." He did not speak "I however did not go there much."
I helped as we put the stuff into my truck and I tried to think of something to say to him. "Thank you." He again did not speak as he grabbed the empty cart and headed back into the store. "It is nice to see you in the wild." He did not stop moving or look my way. "Happy birthday." I yelled.
"Shut up and leave me alone." He said almost quietly but out here in the silence I heard it. I just looked at where he left slightly sad.
Ya, well, that was it.
I shut the back of my truck up and left.
After my morning three cups of coffee I started on painting the inside then the objects on the porch, I hung up the wall lamps giving the kitchen area more light and started on the tile as I waited for the objects to dry.
I pushed the old t.v off the porch and it made a crash noise as I fixed up the new one above the fire place, making sure I nailed the stand to the wall safely before hanging it up. The day was long so I just grabbed a blanket a bag of chips, sat on the new carpet and watched the cooking show on the new t.v.
It was an amazing meal being prepped as I grabbed paper and wrote down what I needed to try and cook it, I was never a cook, I order out unless my mom cooked.
Maybe I can learn one more skill along with how to nail and screw.
Ha, I laughed at my inner voice.
I woke up to a small "Mew." Sitting up I looked down from the bed and there stood a gray small and dirty cat. "How did you get in here?" I stared at it as it spun in circles like it was waiting for me to do something. I stood up confused and walked over to search my fridge for anything a cat could eat and I found some tuna, putting it in a small bowl and she went straight for it as I moved to the bathroom, after getting clean I found her asleep on the bed.
I don't know where she came from but I guess I have a cat now.
My trunk was massively full as I headed out of town to the nearest garbage dump singing to the music. I talked to Lewis who pointed me to one and said it was fine if I had a junk in the trunk type of yard sale in town. I pulled into a rocky area and came up to an open gate as I paused by a booth as it said to. There was this man scrolling his phone and he waved me through but I waited unsure what to do inside, he glanced at me and waved again.
Feeling awkward I just moved forward.
The smell hit me as I backed up towards a big pile, I just started to toss shit out, I kicked the old t.v off the truck when I saw a small four drawer dresser sitting slightly out of all the garbage and I wondered over.
It was in good shape other then the horrible bright blue paint job so I started pushing it towards my truck when I heard the sound of a new truck one heading this way. Once I got the dresser up I watched as a rich big black truck backed up with a decent looking two seater leather couch.
I stared from here and I did not see any rips wondering if he was getting rid of it or not as it still looked very useable. He ignored me as he started to toss shit and then was pulling out the couch slowly making me walk over.
"Are you tossing that?" He looked my way.
"Yes"
"Is there something wrong with it?"
He looked me over, I know I look like a crazy mess and then he checked out my truck and in his eye's he thinks he was better then me "Would you like it?" And maybe he was.
"Maybe" he looked at me like I should be embarrassed at myself but I did not care, it looked almost new. I don't care what he thinks, It is a nice couch.
"I just bought a new three story home, got a huge new couch and that is all." He was proud and bragging to me but he still helped me get it in the back of my truck.
"Thanks"
I gave a glance to see if there was anything else before I left, hopped in and headed home. He must be rich enough to think you just throw them out and not even try to sell it but I don't care I have a couch.
I got home and gave them both a good cleaning before I painted the dresser as the warm sun was setting bringing some cooler air. Once it was dark I pulled them both inside with trouble, I sat on it and watched another cooking show.
I drove my packed truck to town and moved things around for a junk in the trunk style yard sale. Many people came to look but most used it as a way to chat with me. They asked about my mother, told me about my Grandpa and it was like this gave them a green light for it. I must really look more unapproachable then I thought but I enjoyed the conversation with these people. Most bought something out of the stuff left in my home, I could not take home or even just toss.
"Oh this is an antique" An old gray haired women spoke as she picked up an old wooden toy horse. "This is a find." She was so cute and small. "It should not be this cheep." Then she chuckled. "I should not say that to you." She joked making me smile.
"I am Evelyn." She spoke. "You have many old things here I have not seen in years." She was picking up many. "Oh George would love this." She picked up an old cigar case that was empty. "This is his stuff huh?" She said sadly. "He was good friends with my George and boy that is a hard thing to be." She joked again.
I just smiled, I like her. "I should get him over here, maybe he wants something of his, so much of your grandpa's life is here." She spoke sadly.
"I kept the things that mattered." I spoke softy feeling defensive. "But I need to fix the place up and I can't keep them."
She shook her head. "Such a shame you don't want to keep the farm."
"I don't think I could really keep it working."
"You could keep it as a cottage, a vacation home, the beach here is very nice." She spoke as picked up an old mug. "I think your grandpa would love it if you kept it. Bring your city friends here and shock the place." She joked.
These strange people already know all about me it seems, they must talk.
She walked away with so much, people started coming slower but it did pretty good for such a small town, shutting the back of my truck I saw a shadow come my way. The rich fuck was next to me, so close I could smell his aftershave.
"I am here to offer you a large amount for your farm."
"No." I spoke clearly and walked around him trying to get some space.
"But you don.."
"I said no." I spoke with a bit of annoyance as he looked in the back of the truck.
"Hey I am here to shop." He spoke pulling out a wade of cash.
"Its over, please go." I opened the truck door and got ready to go in.
"Listen here you little trollop."
I glared at him and faced the creep. "Are you a man that does not know what the word No means." I stepped closer with anger as he got angry right back at me.
"You do not want me as a enemy." He stepped forward but I held my ground, I know how to fight, men like him don't scare me. "I want your farm and you will be set for life, get everything you want."
"What I want." I gave a smirk. "Is for you to leave me alone, I will not, so go."
He stood there for a few minutes. "This is not over." He spoke before he walked away.
"Yes it is." I spoke loudly for him to hear and sat in my front seat waiting for him to leave. I started it up, my lights turning on making me see Lewis who stood there making me grab my heart "geez" I laughed "Lewis"
"Thank you" He spoke loudly I just smiled as I turned it back off and got out, a part of me just wanted that guy to go and what is left I don't care if someone steals. "I am hitting up the bar." I locked the old school door and started to walk towards it as he joined me.
