Chapter 11"See You See Me"

Narrator

Bubbles happily hums to herself as she engages in her favorite activity at Pokey Oaks Kindergarten. Drawing pictures of things that make her happy. Picture of flowers, bunnies, and her sisters when they play together. Everything that brings her joy she simply lets flow out of her heart with unrestrained abandon onto the paper, her crayons painting a joyful waxy rainbow. She stops, she looks at her drawing and a warm flush of giddiness washes over her. She has made the prettiest drawing she has ever drawn. She just has to show everyone. She looks over at her sisters who are making drawings of their own.

Bubbles said "Blossom, Blossom, look at this drawing I made."

Blossom said "Not now Bubbles, I'm working on a new plan of attack."

Bubbles said "Buttercup, do you want to look at what I drew?"

Buttercup said "Naw, you draw the same boring flowers and bunnies you draw every time. Besides I'm busy drawing a cool battle scene."

Bubbles said "It's not boring, and this is something special."

But her sisters ignore her. She looks at her wonderful drawing. She feels hurt that they didn't want to see it. Her sisters' opinion is important to her, she craves their praise. But lately it has been lacking from them. She is going to show it to Ms. Keane when the hotline buzzes. It is a mission and her sisters are eager to go on it. But Bubbles is more concerned with her drawing. She just has to show it to someone. She rolls it up, puts it in her pocket and leaves with her sisters.

The mission is like many others. Stopping criminals and saving the day. It is starting to get boring to Bubbles and she is just going through the motions. Her sisters enthusiatically dispatch the criminals easily and didn't need her help too much. As they coasted back to school Bubbles takes out the picture tries again to get her sisters to look at it.

Bubbles said "Blossom, Buttercup, will you please look at my picture?"

Blossom said "Sorry, Bubbles, I got to keep my mind focused on what we did to save the day just now. I need it fresh in my memory so I can write it my journal when we get back."

Buttercup said "Some other time Bubbles, it's almost recess anyway and I want to clobber Mitch at dodge ball."

Bubbles hangs back as she watches her sisters fly back to school. She is upset but too proud to let her emotions control her anymore. She wants so bad to show her picture to someone that she goes looking for anyone nearby.

Narrator

Flying over the quiet neighborhoods of Pokey Oaks she sees a little girl sitting on the back porch of a house. She floats down to a spot in front of the girl. She is about her age, she has long strawberry blonde hair and is wearing a sun dress with a straw hat shielding her pleasant face from the sun. The girl looks almost straight at Bubbles.

Bubbles said "Hello, my name is Bubbles."

Girl said "Oh hello, nice to meet you, I don't get many visitors. My name is Mellissa."

Bubbles said "Do you go to school?"

Mellissa said "No, my mom teaches me here at home."

Bubbles said "Oh, well in school today we made pictures and I think I made my best one yet. Do you want to see it?"

Narrator

She holds out the picture to the little girl who keeps staring straight at her.

Mellissa said "Thank you but I can't."

Bubbles said "But why? No one wants to look at my picture, not even my sisters, they are always so busy."

Mellissa said "I would look at your nice picture if I could, but I can't."

Bubbles said "But why not?"

The girl holds out her hand and keeps staring straight at Bubbles.

Mellissa said "Come closer and take my hand."

Confused at first Bubbles eases closer until Mellissa touches her hand. With her other hand the girl reaches up and touches Bubbles' face. Mellissa stands up and looks straight through Bubbles.

Bubbles said "You can't see."

Mellissa said "That's right."

Bubbles said "I'm sorry."

Mellissa said "It's okay."

Bubbles said "I shouldn't have bothered you, I better be going."

Mellissa said "Can you stay a bit? I don't get much company."

Bubbles said "Okay."

She sits down with Mellissa on the porch bench she had been sitting on.

Mellissa said "Tell me about your picture Bubbles."

Bubbles said "Okay, it's about me and my sisters. We are playing in the back yard. Blossom, that's one of my sisters, is showing me a flower in the garden and telling me what kind it is and Buttercup, that's my other sister, is kicking a soccer ball around the yard."

Mellissa said "Your sisters must be fun to be with."

Bubbles said "Sometimes, but most of the time they get too busy to have fun with me. Maybe they don't want me to be their sister anymore."

Mellissa said "That's silly, even when they are too busy they must be always thinking about you. They are lucky to have a sister like you who always cares about them. Why else would you have made your picture?"

Bubbles said "Thank you, Mellissa. That makes me feel better."

She looks at the picture and thinks about why she made it. Then she feels Mellissa touch her shoulder.

Mellissa said "I wish I had sisters and brothers to play with. I can't go to school yet, so I don't have a lot of friends."

Bubbles said "I will be your friend."

Mellissa said "Thank you Bubbles."

Bubbles said "I got to go, I'm expected back at school."

Melisa said "I understand."

Bubbles said "Can I come back again? We can talk about a lot of things. Maybe next time I'll bring my sisters."

Mellissa said "I would like that Bubbles."

Bubbles touches her cheek and then gets up and floats into the sky.

Bubbles said "Bye Mellissa."

Mellissa looks straight ahead not knowing Bubbles is overhead by now.

Mellissa said "Bye Bubbles."

Bubbles quickly flies back to school and sees the class is having recess. Her sisters are waiting in the schoolyard.

Blossom said "Bubbles, where have you been?"

Buttercup said "We were getting worried about you."

Bubbles said "You were? I thought you didn't care about me anymore."

Blossom said "Don't be silly, we always care about you."

Buttercup said "Why didn't you come back with us?"

Bubbles said "Uh, I saw someone who needed a friend."

Blossom said "Aw, that's you Bubbles, always there to make friends."

Buttercup said "Didn't you have a picture to show us?"

Bubbles said "You really want to see it?"

Blossom said "Of course we do. Don't think we were trying to ignore you."

Bubbles said "Okay, I'll show it to you, but..."

Buttercup said "But what?"

Bubbles said "After school will you come with me and meet my new friend."

Blossom said "Sure we will."

Buttercup said "Any friend of Bubbles is a friend for life."

Bubbles beams as she pulls out the picture from her pocket and unrolls it. The picture now no longer seems important to Bubbles as to what it means to her sisters.
