Chapter 12 "Fire Drill"
(Opening shot: the city skyline in the afternoon. The buildings are spotlessly white.)
Narrator: The city of Townsville! where The class at Pokey Oaks Kindergarten was more boisterous and louder than usual making Ms. Keane's attempts to get the kids to be quiet difficult.
Ms. Keane said "Class, may I have your attention please?"
Bedlam continued unchecked.
Ms. Keane said "CLASS!"
Raising her voice had no effect so Ms. Keane reaches into the drawer of her desk, pulls out a pair of cymbals and slams them together.
!CRASH!
Every child stops talking and looks at her.
Ms. Keane said "Good, now that I have your attention we have something special to do today. As required by the Townsville School District we must practice a fire drill. Now I need three volunteers."
A sea of hands shot toward the ceiling.
Ms. Keane said "Ah yes, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. You'll do."
The Powerpuff Girls float up to the front of the classroom.
Blossom said "What do you want us to do Ms. Keane?"
Ms. Keane said "First Buttercup, you're going to be the fire."
She hangs a sign with the word "Fire" written on it around Buttercup's neck with a string.
Buttercup said "Cool, I'm the fire."
Ms. Keane said "Just stand in the corner over there. Now Bubbles, you will be the fire bell. When I give the signal you will make an alarm sound. Do you got that?"
Bubbles said "Yes Ms. Keane."
Ms. Keane said "Good, now Blossom you will lead the kids in the best and safest way to exit the building in case of a fire."
Blossom said "Naturally."
Ms. Keane said "Good, now let's begin."
She turns to Buttercup but sees her rubbing her hands together so hard and fast that smoke and sparks are coming from them.
Ms. Keane said "Buttercup, what are you doing?"
Buttercup said well "If I'm going to be the fire I might as well make it real."
Ms. Keane said "Nothing doing, we do not need a real fire, just a pretend fire, so stop that this instant."
Buttercup said oh right "Sorry."
She sheepishly puts her hands behind her but doesn't realize her super-heated hands are touching the back of her dress.
Ms. Keane to the class) "Now when the alarm bell rings..."
Buttercup yelled "YEOOOW!"
Buttercup is running around in a circle flapping her arms as she trails smoke from a smoldering fire on her butt.
Ms. Keane said "My goodness!"
Buttercup said "MY BISCUITS ARE BURNING!"
Blossom said "Hold still Buttercup!"
Blossom blows her ice breath at Buttercup's back putting out the small fire and leaving a scorched spot on her dress. The rest of the class giggles.
Ms. Keane said well "If you're through playing Smokey the Bear, can we get on with the drill?"
Buttercup said "Yes Ma'am."
She stands quietly in the corner rubbing her butt.
Ms. Keane said alright "Very well, Bubbles, since you are the fire bell go ahead and make your alarm sound."
Bubbles takes a deep breath and then lets loose with a Sonic Scream!
Bubbles "SQUEEEEEEEE!"
Everybody cover their ears as the Super Sonic Scream rattles the building and shatters windows.
Ms. Keane said "BUBBLES, THAT'S ENOUGH!"
Bubbles said "Sorry."
Ms. Keane said "It's not necessary to let the entire county hear. Just make a quiet bell sound."
Bubbles said "Yes Ms. Keane. Ring ring, ring ring, ring ring."
Ms. Keane said "Good, now Blossom, lead the class in an orderly fashion out of the building."
Blossom said "Yes, Ma'am. Okay everybody, follow me!"
She zooms to a wall and crashes through it leaving a Blossom shaped hole.
Ms. Keane exasperated) "Blossom, no!"
Blossom peeks in through the hole she made.
Blossom said "Is there something wrong Ms. Keane?"
Ms. Keane said "You are supposed to lead the class out the nearest exit. Not everyone can make a hole in the wall like you can."
Blossom said "Oh yeah, heh heh, that's right. Let's do that over."
As Blossom steps back into the room Mary raises her hand.
Mary said "Ms. Keane, Blossom did something else wrong."
Ms. Keane said "And what is that Mary?"
Mary said "In case of a fire you must get on your hands and knees so you can breath air if there is smoke in the room."
Ms. Keane said "Very good Mary. Everybody on your hands and knees. Now Blossom, lead us out of the room in a proper manner this time."
Blossom said "Yes Ms. Keane, everybody follow me."
As they all crawl on their hands and knees after Blossom she keeps looking back. Blossom crawls though a door without looking. All the kids stop and look at her.
Blossom said "Why is everybody stopping?"
Ms. Keane said "Blossom, that's the closet."
Blossom said "Oh yeah, I knew that."
Ms. Keane said "Remember class, familiarize yourself where all the exits are so you can find them in a smoke filled room. Getting trapped in a closet means trouble. Now Blossom, leads us out the proper door."
Blossom blushing) "Yes Ms. Keane."
Once all the kids are outside Ms. Keane has them line up.
Ms. Keane said "Now we'll take a head count, but first..."
She looks in the classroom and sees Buttercup still standing there with the sign around her neck and Bubbles standing there making a ringing sound.
Bubbles "Ring ring, ring ring, ring ring."
Ms. Keane said You two can come out here now."
Buttercup said "Good, I was getting bored being a blaze."
As they join the class outside Mitch notices Buttercup's scorched dress.
Mitch said "Left your buns in the oven too long Buttercup?"
Buttercup said "Put a sock in it!"
Ms. Keane - said "Now that we are safely out of the burning building we can see if everyone made it out."
Bubbles said "Oh no, wait!"
She zooms back into the building and then quickly returns with Twiggy, the class hamster, in his cage.
Bubbles you "You forgot Twiggy."
Ms. Keane said "Yes Bubbles, but there are times when we can't stop to get the animals out of a building."
Bubbles said "But you couldn't leave Twiggy to be roasted in the fire, that's not right."
Blossom said "Maybe you should assign someone to make sure Twiggy is safe in case of a fire."
Ms. Keane said "That is a good idea Blossom."
Buttercup said "You finally got something right."
Blossom throws an angry glare at Buttercup.
Blossom "Says you, little Miss Incendiary Pants."
Buttercup said "Kiss my sooty butt!"
Ms. Keane said "That's enough girls. For now Bubbles we'll make you responsible for Twigg's safety in case of a fire here."
Bubbles said "Oh thank you."
Ms. Keane said "Okay class, we'll now go back into the classroom and go over more fire safety."
Mary raises her hand.
Ms. Keane said "Yes Mary."
Mary said "We can't go into the classroom Ms. Keane."
Ms. Keane said "And why not?"
Mary said "The school is on fire."
They all can see smoke coming out of the windows.
Ms. Keane said "Oh my goodness."
Buttercup said "I didn't start that."
Blossom said "Do we have to get down on our hands and knees."
Ms. Keane - said "No, we have to call the fire department."
But they can already hear the sirens of the fire trucks approaching. In less than a half hour the firefighters get the fire out as the kids watch from the school yard. The Fire Chief approaches Ms. Keane.
Fire Chief said "It's a good thing you had the kids outside ma'am."
Ms. Keane said "We were practicing a fire drill. I guess we were fortunate, we didn't even need the Powerpuff Girls to save the day."
Blossom said "What caused the fire, Chief?"
Fire chief said "Faulty wiring in a coffee maker in your teacher's office."
Ms. Keane said "Oh dear, I'll have to get a new one."
As the firefighters clean up the kids all play in the schoolyard.
Mary said "Why didn't you Powerpuff Girls put out the fire yourselves?"
Blossom said "The firefighters were already here and we don't get in their way unless they really need us."
Buttercup said "Everybody was out of the building anyway."
Bubbles said "Even Twiggy."
Blossom said "When it comes to fighting fires we leave it to the professionals."
Buttercup said "Just like the professional job you did leading the class out of the building?"
Blossom said "Keep up those comments and next time I'll let your butt burn."
The standard end shot comes up.)
