Aqua Flag
Narrator The City of Townsville, in early summer…the Powerpuff Girls were spending the day at the local Townsville Pool. No one else was around, so they had the place to themselves for the time being.
Blossom popped up from underwater to check on the Professor, who had just dozed off in the middle of his novel. Quietly giggling, she went back under to report over to her sisters. Bubbles and Buttercup were waiting for her over at the deep end of the pool when she resurfaced.
"Is he out cold?" Buttercup asked.
"Out like a light, Buttercup," replied Blossom, saluting as if she were a soldier. "You two ready to play?"
"Yaaaaay~! I love this game!" said Bubbles, excited.
Narrator With that, the Girls set up three safety dividers into circles and grabbed their matching outfits, throwing them inside the circles. As soon as they were done, they all met in the middle of the deep end.
"Everyone clear on the rules?" asked Blossom.
"You don't need to tell me twice, sis," came Buttercup's reply. Despite this, they were going to go over the rules anyway, "The game is 'Aqua Flag'—all players start with one flag inside each base, and the goal is to get all of the flags to your home base."
"The flag you own shows which is your home base, and more importantly, which player is winning," Bubbles added.
"Players cannot resurface anywhere except inside their home base," Blossom continued. "Come up for air anywhere else, and you're out of the game! You can't use your powers, either, or you're disqualified. Whoever gets all three flags inside their home base first is the winner!"
Narrator The Girls' home bases were clear—being the Powerpuff with the longest breath holding time, Blossom's base was at the farthest edge of the deep end. Bubbles' was in the middle, near the left edge (her left, to be precise), and, being the Powerpuff with the weakest lungs, Buttercup's was the closest to the very center of the pool.
"Ready?" The Girls said. "…GO!" They all took deep breaths and went under, beginning the game proper.
Buttercup's first priority was going after Bubbles' flag. She and her sisters already had more powerful lungs than the average human, though since her sisters could still outlast her, she felt she had to go for the easier target first. Bubbles had left her base wide open, giving Buttercup an easy shot at her flag. However, she found Blossom going for the same flag. With a puffy-cheeked smile on her face, Blossom grabbed Bubbles' flag before Buttercup could even touch it.
Buttercup angrily gurgled at her sister, but Blossom just gave her a smug grin. She pointed over to Buttercup's base, where Bubbles was snatching her flag unopposed. Surprised at this, Buttercup swam back to her own base in a hurry, while Blossom swam back to hers with a victorious, bubble-filled giggle.
Bubbles heard Buttercup's gurgly voice as she was swimming right towards her, but Bubbles just gave her a bubbly raspberry and swam right below her, making a beeline for her own base. As Buttercup gave chase, Bubbles couldn't help but stifle a giggle. Once she got back, however, she found her own flag was gone.
Blossom confidently lifted Bubbles' flag up into her base, just as she saw her sisters swimming towards her. Seeing Bubbles still holding Buttercup's flag, she smirked and immediately dived down to the pool bottom. Distracted, Bubbles gave chase, but Buttercup stopped in her tracks, looking up at both Blossom's and Bubbles' flags unprotected. Seeing an opportunity, she grinned and stole them both, then started to swim back to her own base.
Bubbles touched down onto the pool bottom, locking eyes with her redheaded sister. Blossom took this opportunity to charge at her sister and, thinking fast, decided to purposely release air from her nose (or where her nose should be, at least), temporarily blinding Bubbles, leaving her wide open to get Buttercup's flag. Once Blossom and Bubbles looked up at Blossom's base, however, they found both their flags missing. "Hbleybl!" Furious, Blossom (after putting Buttercup's flag in her base) swam towards Buttercup, with Bubbles following suit.
As Buttercup swam towards her base from Blossom's, she could feel her chest getting tighter. Four minutes…it was by no means bad by normal human standards, actually quite impressive, but by Powerpuff standards it was rather trivial. By the halfway mark, she turned around to see if her sisters were chasing her…and sure enough, they were. She yelped at this, and once they caught up, she tried avoiding them as best she could, still clutching the flags. Despite this, Blossom still caught her, wrapping her arms around her stomach.
In desperation, Buttercup tried pushing her off, momentarily letting go of the flags to do so. As her sisters were distracted, Bubbles noticed the flags floating up to the surface, and grabbed them before they could reach it. With that, she raced off to her own base, in plain sight of her sisters. Surprised, the two gave chase…or rather, Blossom did, but by this point, Buttercup was getting low on air. She wanted to stay in the game, but her base looked like it was still so far away…
"…BLUBLBGLUB!"
Finally out of air, Buttercup had no choice but to surface right then and there. "Gaah-haaa…!"
Buttercup started panting heavily for air, not caring that she had just lost. Regardless, she could just make out some gurgled teasing from Blossom. "Yblourbl oublt, Bublttercblupbl! Thblatbl isbln'tbl yblourbl hblomebl blbablsebl!" "I know, Blossom…" Buttercup replied, groaning. With that, she swam towards the closest edge of the pool and got out. "I really hate my puny lungs," she mused to herself. "I'm gonna go get a soda." She then flew to the nearest soda dispenser.
Narrator Back underwater, it was just Blossom versus Bubbles now, and Bubbles had the remaining flags Blossom needed to win. Blossom charged towards Bubbles' base, while Bubbles tried to defend it as best she could. Blossom tried advancing left, but Bubbles blocked her way and quickly made a beeline for Blossom's base. Surprised, Blossom swam as quick as she could to try and stop her. Regardless of her best efforts, however, Blossom could not make it back before Bubbles grabbed Buttercup's flag.
Bubbles couldn't help celebrating. "Ibl wblinbl~!"
Blossom imitated a clapping motion. "Nblicebl jblob, Bublbblblesbl," she gurgled, "blbut ybloubl stblillbl nbleedbl tobl mblakebl itbl blbablck tobl yblourbl blbablsebl."
The two sisters gave each other a glaring, determined look. Neither one was willing to back down. Bubbles kicked herself off of the wall and started swimming as fast as she could, with Blossom close on her tail. Blossom was kicking her feet as fast as possible, her arms reaching out for the remaining flag.
Narrator All of a sudden, Bubbles stopped, turning to face her sister, and blew air bubbles into Blossom's face, using her own tactic against her and blinding her for a moment. Bubbles giggled and stuck her tongue out at her while she was distracted, before swimming the rest of the way to her base and lifting Buttercup's flag up inside it. Bubbles had all three flags—she had won!
Bubbles resurfaced inside her base, her and her sisters' outfits resting on her head. "Now do I win?" she said, panting for air. "I 'do say so," Blossom replied from underwater, grinning, happy for her sister.
With the game over, Blossom resurfaced as well, panting lightly. "That was so much fun!" "
I know, right?" Bubbles replied, giggling.
"It's always between you two, isn't it?" Buttercup chimed in, floating towards the edge of the pool with a soda in hand.
"Oh, cheer up, Buttercup—you'll win one someday," Bubbles quipped cheekily. Buttercup just lowered her eyelids at her sister, taking a drink from her soda can.
"Alright, Girls," Blossom said, "let's go ahead and put these safety dividers back. We wouldn't want the Professor or the pool staff to get angry with us." "Yeah, you got a point there," Buttercup replied, a tad nervous at the thought. With that, all three began cleaning up any and all evidence of their little game.
Narrator and So once again, no one suspects a thing, thanks to the Powerpuff Girls!
