Robert stood above the broken body of Rhaegar Targaryen, still furious at the dead prince who took his betrothed and had the gall to say her name as the last thing on his lips. He saw a young squire wearing a teal surcoat rush down grabbing the dragonspawn. Robert laughed, but felt a tremendous pain when did, so he stopped and went back to his horse. He tried to remount his horse but he couldn't find the strength to do so. He soon felt a warm liquid flowing down his throat to his collar and chest. He placed his hand to the source and then pulled it away. His gauntlet was stained crimson with his blood. Rhaegar's last strike did find it's mark and while it had not killed him instantly a swift slice of the sword to the neck was always fatal. Whatever strength remained in his body failed him, as he collapsed. He could hear one of his knights or perhaps a man at arms call out upon seeing him fall, but what was said simply became impossible to understand. He couldn't even say his betrothed's name as he felt the last of his lifeblood flow out of him and the darkness swallowed his vision.
Later that Night:
Eddard Stark stood before the bodies of his friend Robert and the mysterious Prince of Dragonstone. Ned could barely comprehend what was happening. They had gone to just depose the Mad King, rescuing his sister, and avenging the deaths of his father and brother along with their men; to placing Robert on the throne of Westeros, and now they were aimless without a natural leader like Robert. Though he was growing increasingly worried about Robert's behavior the last few weeks. He hadn't expected that Robert would claim the throne and he finally saw what Lya confided in him when their father announced her betrothal. Robert had told him that he hid from the Royal forces in a brothel and boasted to have bedded half the whores there before he came out to fight. If only he had accepted Lya's words and objected to the betrothal. All of this could have been avoided. Hadn't he seen Robert's bastard children with his own eyes and held them in his own hands.
Ned was broken from his contemplation by his foster father Lord Aryn followed by his good father Hoster Tully. Jon Aryn said, "They say a man who seeks vengeance digs two graves, and now I lost a man I loved like a son and you a man who was closer to you than your own brothers".
Ned replied, "Yes, vengeance is a dangerous game, and chaos seems to be its reward".
Hoster said, "It is a damn shame that this happened. We have no king and the only viable options to replace Aerys are dead. All that is left is a seven year old boy who some claim is as mad as his father and a newborn babe. A long regency may be better than Aerys, but is still ripe for chaos".
Jon Aryn said, "There is Stannis as well but he is under siege at Storms' End and while he is certainly a capable man, he lacks Robert's natural charisma".
Ned said, "Be that as it may, he is probably the best option we have to end the war and prevent even more chaos and destruction. I will lead my Northmen down the King's Road to relieve the siege of Storm's End. I will question Rhaegar's squire about where Lya was kept".
Hoster and Jon gave their consent and Ned left them to question the Velayron boy. Ned wondered if he would get any useful information from him. The boy was distant kin to the Targaryens like all Velayrons, the Blood of Old Valyria, even if they weren't dragonlords in the freehold. It was also known that the boy idolized Rhaegar and was even bold enough to ask Prince Rhaegar for right to be his squire at tourney of Lannisport while the boy was only seven. When they tried to recover Rhaegar's body the boy, still stricken with grief, managed to slay two full grown men and only by his word did the boy still live. Ned entered the pavilion where the now former squire of Rhaegar Targaryen was held. The boy was bound and tied to the central pavilion. Ned asked, "Your name is Daemon Velayron, correct?"
0
Daemon replied, "That is correct, my lord".
Ned said in his most lordly voice, "You will tell me where my sister is and I will ensure that you are returned to your family".
Daemon looked Ned in the eyes full of unwavering determination and replied, "My lord, not only will I tell you where she is, I will lead you to her and ensure that the Kingsguard guarding your sister…"
Ned was about to give his thanks when Daemon continued, "So long as you swear that you and your bannermen shall do no harm to Princess Elia and her children, depose Aerys, and crown Prince Aegon as King Aegon VI".
Ned was more surprised than annoyed by the young squire's demands, he hadn't known Rhaegar's own squire would want to depose Aerys.
Ned asked, "Those are some surprising terms, especially the part about deposing Aerys. Did Rhaegar know you were so disloyal?"
Daemon's eyes burned in fury at his remark and the squire said, "I am loyal, Lord Stark. Prince Rhaegar wanted to save the realm from Aerys madness, but his presence at Harrenhal prevented that. With his grace dead, by the treacherous Bratheon, the firstborn son of Rhaegar must be king".
Ned said, "Perhaps House Targaryen no longer deserves to be on the throne for the crimes of Aerys and Rhaegar".
Daemon's eyes were now filled with hate and intent to kill. Daemon responded, "Rhaegar committed no crime, and truth be told I never thought a Stark of Winterfell would betray his own kin. Her grace assured Prince Rhaegar that once you knew the truth you would bend your knee".
Ned, now visibly surprised, asked, "Her grace? What in the Seven Hells are you saying boy"?
The boy replied, " I'm saying what you should know my lord. That your sister was not kidnapped and chose to elope with Prince Rhaegar of her own free will. Thus, becoming princess consort of Prince Rhaegar. When we left her at the arrival of Lord Commander Ser Gerrold, her grace was with child".
Ned had suspected that there was more to the truth than what had been said, but not expecting this revelation.
Ned said, "Alright, I swear on my honor as Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North that no Northern blade will be drawn against Princess Elia and her children, that Prince Aegon shall be crowned, and I will depose Aerys".
Jaime POV:
Jaime was standing on the steps of the Iron Throne, in shock at what he just did. He slew the very king he was sworn to protect. It was all he could to not collapse onto the throne itself. He could hear the sounds of his lord father's army getting closer. The shouts of battle and cries of innocents.
Through the din of battle and city being sacked, he hears a cry that is all too familiar to him. It belonged to a little girl. A little girl who called him her "White Knight" and "White Lion". One he had sworn to Prince Rhaegar to protect, the little Princess Rhaenys.
Jaime gathered himself and ran as fast as he could through the corridors of the Red Keep, following the Princess' voice. Jaime wasn't a religious man, but he prayed to the gods that he would make it in time.
For once, the gods were good. Jaime entered through the busted door that led into Prince Rhaegar's personal chambers. There he saw Amory Lorch drag Rhaenys out from under her father's bed. Like a cat on a mouse, Jaime pounced with all the quickness he could muster. Before Lorch could deliver the first blow to Rhaenys, Jaime thrusted his sword through the gap created by Lorch's raised arm. Driving his sword through Lorch and his black heart, killing the man instantly.
As soon as he was certain Lorch was dead, he drew out his sword and tried to calm the little princess. Holding her in his arms until she realized who held her.
Rhaenys said, "Ser Jaime!?"
She proceeded to hug ser Jaime with all her might.
Rhaenys then said, "Ser Jaime, what's going on. That man and a giant appeared and mother told me to run. Ser Jaime you have to help mother and Egg".
Jaime knew who the giant was, the Mountain. This would be a difficult fight to be sure, but he swore an oath and he would do everything in his power not to fail Prince Rhaegar.
He carried Rhaenys with him not trusting his father's bannermen or sworn men not to try to kill Rhaenys again. He hoped like before the gods would be good and he would get there in time though he knew this would be an even longer shot than with Rhaenys. As he approached Princess Elia's room he said, "Princess I want you to close your eyes until I tell you to open them or another command".
He entered Princess Elia's room and saw what could only be described as the stuff of nightmares. Clegane covered in blood and brains stood over Rhaegar's widow and she was beaten and violated so badly that Jaime couldn't tell if she still lived.
Jaime said to Rhaenys as he set her down, "Hide in your mother's wardrobe, I shall deal with Clegane".
Rhaenys scurried to the wardrobe that stood on the far right wall to Jaime.
Clegane said, "Ser Jaime, I did not think you would be here".
Jaime said, "Death always seems to come at unexpected times. Now it is time to die. Clegane".
Jaime was a quick as cat and aimed for the exposed legs and genitals of the Mountain.
Clegane parried it, but it did not save him completely. The thrust was diverted to his right thigh and cut through the fleshy part of the thigh. Though not deep enough to be mortal.
Jaime withdrew back to a high guard, ready to counter Clegane.
Clegane growled, "You should not be fighting me Lannister, this is all according to your father's orders".
Jaime said, "Well my father can burn in the Seven Hells, as I will not allow the princesses to come to harm. I've already failed my Princes, I will not fail the princesses".
Clegane, "I'll tell your father that Aerys had you killed".
Jaime said, "Feeling confident heh, Clegane…"Jaime paused and said, "In another life men might call me Kingslayer, but after today they shall call me Moutainslayer".
Clegane swung his greatsword in an overhand chop. Jaime parried the slash forcing the blade to hit the stone floor. The stone chipped under the might of Clegane's blow.
Jaime riposted. Jaime's blade nearly found its mark. The tip of the blade found Clegane's eye, but Clegane flinched at the pain. Thus, moving and causing the blade to painfully slash across his face and ear. Turning a mortal blow into a debilitating blow.
Clegane howled in pain at the loss of his eye. Recoiling backwards, Clegane's guard dropped.
Jaime saw his opportunity. He made a quick hack at Clegane's knee, cutting deep into it. So, the Mountain collapsed under his own weight. Jaime then soon pulled his blade free from the knee and with the speed of lighting thrust his sword through the Mountain's remaining eye killing him instantly.
Pulling his blade free of Clegane's skull he slid his blade back into his scabbard and ran to check on Princess Elia.
The Princess was still alive but barely. Jaime wrapped her in some blankets and ordered Rhaenys to follow him. Together he ran to Pycelle's chambers praying that she might yet live.
