Achieving Goals-Chapter 13
Logan's first day at the office was awkward. He was the boss' son and one day would be their boss. He tried to be friendly, but there was a lot of ass-kissing. He had learned a long time ago what that looked like.
He was sitting in his office. He had just got off the phone with Mitchum. They made a plan. Logan had looked over several projects that were being worked on. He told Mitchum which ones interested him. Mitchum agreed for him to pick the project and help.
He introduced himself to Ted, Ian, and Lizzy. They were working on a tech project. He has always been interested in digital media. He figured a tech project would be beneficial. He spent most of the day learning about the project. Geoffrey was in charge of the project. He was not in the office today. He and his wife are expecting their first grandchild. They were returning from visiting their daughter- and son-in-law.
At the end of the day, he was exhausted. When he entered the apartment, Rory was not in the living room, kitchen, or any other room visible when you entered the door.
"Ace, you here?" he asked. He put his briefcase and keys in the dish at the front door. On his way to the bedroom to change, he checked his phone. He and Rory had been texting back and forth all day. He was checking to see if she texted him. She would be out for a while. No, no text.
When he entered the bedroom, she was not in there either. He checked the bathroom. After getting out of his suit, he checked the office. She was nowhere to be found. He tried calling her phone, only to hear it ring. He went to the kitchen to find it sitting on the counter being charged.
He stood there. He was not sure what to do. He was sure she was just out at the store or got caught up at a bookstore. There are plenty of them around here. He walked to the drink cart and fixed himself a drink. He checked his watch. It was time for the news. He decided to sit and drink his scotch and watch the news.
He had just settled on the sofa. TV on, scotch in his hand. Phone in the other. He was scrolling through his phone while the weather person told of the weather for the next few days. She then tossed it back to the on-the-scene reporter. The reporter was covering the ceremony of the unveiling of a statue of Margaret Thatcher.
Logan was listening to the reporter while scrolling through his phone. This was recorded. He knew this because he had reporters from his office at the actual unveiling. He glanced up to see a familiar face behind the reporter. It was Rory. He put his phone down. What is she doing? He wondered. She had a recorder and was talking with what looked like Tony Blair. No, that could not be who she was talking to. Logan sat there in shock. He was not sure how long he had sat there. The news report had moved on from the unveiling.
He was brought out of his shock, but the ringing of his phone. Before he could answer it, the front door opened and Rory burst in like she was on fire or something. He stood up. That is when she noticed him.
"Logan, you are not going to believe what happened to me. I interviewed Tony Blair. I have already written the story. I am waiting for a call from the editor. He will let me know tonight if it will run in the Sun. I can't believe it. Who would have thought? Oh, I have got to call my mom." She was talking fast. His phone was still ringing. He was in shock. He saw her pass him on the way to the bathroom. He followed her. He was waiting on the end of the bed for her to finish in the bathroom.
"Ace," He said as he grabbed her arm. "Whoa. You have got to slow down. Tell me about the interview with Tony Blair. How did you get to submit your piece to the Sun? Who do you know over there? How did you get close enough to interview him? Ace, tell me everything." He told her. He was still in shock, but he was smiling now. Her smile was all over her face. "Start from the very beginning, please." He asked.
She stood in front of him while he sat at the end of the bed. She took a deep breath.
"How about you go fix us some drinks? I want to change. I will meet you in the living room and tell you everything." she told him as she kissed him on the lips. "You are going to be so proud of me."
When they both got settled on the sofa and Logan turned his phone off, she began.
"Grandpa called me right after you left this morning. He told me he had a friend. Samuel Coswell. He is the political editor at the Sun. He was on the phone with him this morning when he got the news that the interview scheduled with Tony Blair was going to be canceled because of a conflict in scheduling." She stopped to take a sip of her wine.
"He told Grandpa he had to go so he could find a replacement. My grandpa told him that his granddaughter was in London and she was an excellent reporter. I am sure there is more said, but Grandpa didn't give me the details. He just told me to expect a call from Mr. Coswell about an interview with Tony Blair. He called while I was telling Grandpa I was not ready for such an important interview. He told me nonsense and hung up." She was smiling.
"I answered. He told me who he was. He told me to be at the Sun office in an hour and be dressed for the interview. He would have my credentials waiting for me. I went. He gave me a press pass, a list of questions, and an address to meet Tony Blair. I went to meet him, but he was leaving for the unveiling. He asked if I would like to ride with him. I interviewed him in the back seat of his town car. He knew Trix and Grandpa. That is what we were talking about when the camera caught us." She stopped to take a breath.
"I went back to the Sun, typed up the story, and submitted it. I am waiting for Mr. Cosewell to call, but I discovered I left my phone on the charger. So I rushed home so I could get the call and tell you." She leaned over and kissed him.
"Do you have a copy of what you submitted?" He asked. She shook her head. He got up and went to the office. She followed. He pulled up the HPG server. Found The Sun. Clicked on the political section. He looked for her name. Found it and pulled it up. He started reading.
"Wait. The Sun is part of HPG?" Rory asked. Logan continued to read, but he nodded. She was not aware of that. Humm this just became more interesting.
