Achieving Goals-Chapter 26

Rory and Logan got into a routine. With Logan going to work and Rory going to work and School.

Friday morning, Rory woke with a terrible headache. Logan tried to get her to stay home, but she had an assignment that was due at school, then she was to head The Observer for a few hours. Logan and Rory agreed to Friday night dinner as long as Honor, Josh, Mitchum, and Shira were invited. Logan and Honor both talked with Mitchum and Shira. Logan and Honor both told them that if they wanted to be a part of their family, they would need to get along for now. Mitchum agreed, as did Shira.

Logan asked Tom to call Frank and have him meet him in the parking garage. He called Rory and told her he was on his way.

"Ace, I will be there in 10 minutes. Go to the parking garage and Frank will pick you up." Logan told her.

"Okay, I have already talked with Simon. He knows I will leave early today," Rory told him. Simon is the editor of the Lifestyle section of The Observer. Rory was given a research assignment on Wednesday, to be handed in by Friday. She had already turned it in.

Rory stepped to Simon's office and knocked on the door. His secretary was not at her desk. When she knocked, she heard a muffled 'come in'. She entered the office to find Mark, the writer that she was doing research for. He was in his 40s with graying hair at the temples. He was a very distinguished-looking man.

"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt, but I am glad you both are here. It will save me time." She told them. "I am on my way out. Lo–my ride is meeting me in the garage. We are on our way to visit my newlywed parents in Hartford." She did not feel the need to include the rest of the family.

"Yes, you told me about that earlier this week. Do you have a minute to sit and talk?" Simon asked. Rory nodded as she took a seat and looked at her watch. "Mark and I were just talking about you."

"Yes, I hesitate to tell you this," Mark started. "But, because you are new, I did my own research." Rory was looking at Mark as he spoke. She turned her head to look at Simon.

"I don't understand." She told them. She had worked hard to get the research done as well as all the other assignments that she was given. This did not include the time she had to spend on her schoolwork.

"This is something a lot of the writers do with new interns or researchers. But I have not got to my point." Mark told her. She nodded. She knew it was rude to look at her watch, but the last thing she needed was Logan showing up because she was not downstairs waiting. "Your research far exceeds anything I have seen from an intern. You even dug up some old newspaper articles to use as quotes."

"What Mark is trying to say is, you have done an excellent job on the research. Mark would like for you to be assigned to him for the next few weeks." Simon told her. She nodded. About that time, Simon's office phone rang.

"This is Simon," he said. "Yes, sir. That is not a problem... Thank you, sir." Simon hung up the phone. "Well, Rory, we have kept you long enough. Mr. Kennick would like for you to stop by his office on your way out." Rory's eyes got big. What did the Editor-in-Chief want with her?

She got up to leave the office. As soon as she was out of the office, she looked at her phone. It had been vibrating in the pocket of her jacket. She had a text from Logan.

L- Mr. Kennick does not need to see you. I had him call. If you don't hurry, we will be late and I will have to listen to Emily all night.

She started laughing when she read the text. She met Frank in the garage. He opened the door to allow her to get in. Logan was waiting for her. She got in and kissed him.

"You shouldn't have done that. What am I going to tell them if they asked what he wanted?" She asked. She was still smiling. It was funny to her.

"Just tell them he wanted to welcome you," Logan told her as he handed her a cup of coffee.

Rory's head was still hurting. It was not as bad as it was this morning. She laid her head on Logan's shoulder as Frank drove them to Hartford. Logan was running his hand through her hair. He hoped everyone behaved themselves tonight. He was worried about Rory.

Logan woke Rory when they got into Hartford. She told him her headache was easing up. She was glad to see Honor's Lexus was in the drive next to Lorelai's jeep. She couldn't believe her dad had not bought her another vehicle. Logan squeezed Rory's hand as they approached the door. They both knew they would face the 'wedding' questions or the 'not being proper to live together before marriage' sermon.

Rory asked for a club soda instead of her usual side car- Logan asked for a Macallan neat. Rory drinking a club soda did not go unnoticed by Emily. Emily was unsure of how to feel. If Rory was pregnant, they could rush a wedding. It would not be ideal, but it could be done. She would love a great-grandbaby to spoil before she gets too old, but waiting until they are married would be better. Maybe soon, Emily signed.

Emily was lost in her own head while Gigi told about her adventures since returning from London. The doorbell ringing brought Emily out of her thoughts. Emily looked up as Shira entered the room.

"I am so sorry I am late. Time got away from me. That is the only excuse." Shira told them. Everyone accepted her apology. Logan and Honor both glanced at each other. Only a person who has been around Shira enough would know that she has already been drinking. Logan hoped this would not ruin the evening.
