Edward's PoV (1,2K)
After Edward got back home, he took a long hot shower, not sure if he felt sorry for himself or if he was angry with how it all played out. It had been for sure the worst date of his life. Even worse, the worst date he had ever heard of. Nothing went as planned.
It all started oddly when he arrived at her place and found out that Bella had chopped off all of her beautiful hair. It had always been something that he secretly liked, the fact that he was the only one who got to see her with her long hair down. Even before they started any sort of relationship, contractual or not, Bella never let her hair loose. And he came to like the fact that she only did it for him because in a way, it made him feel that she was only comfortable being fully herself with only him.
But now…it wasn't ugly, in fact, the change was something beautiful, no matter how different it made her look; but Edward felt that something broke with that chop. That secret they implicitly shared, that little smile she would have when she would call him a caveman when he made comments on her hair, it all disappeared in an instant.
Still, he made no comment on it. Despite the fact that it was her body to do as she wished, Edward also knew that a comment from him wouldn't be welcomed. Especially after Bella told him that she chopped her hair because she needed a change. And though she didn't say a word about it nor even tried to imply it, he knew he was the reason behind that need for change.
So he just sucked it up, embraced this new look on the woman he loved and took her to that date she'd been waiting for so long. It started awkwardly, but then again, Bella had always known how to make him feel comfortable without even trying.
And then he slipped up.
If he was honest with himself, he had always been planning on telling Bella he had read in her diary. But not when their relationship was so fragile, and certainly not in the middle of a date. For a moment, he even considered denying the whole thing. But they had always been honest with each other, especially with direct questions like that, and he wasn't going to break this one last thing that was sure between them.
He saw how the truth hurt her, he saw how she closed her eyes to repress her tears, and most importantly, he saw how that hope that lit her beautiful eyes throughout the evening suddenly vanished.
Which was why, as soon as he got out of the shower, he went to bed, looking at the empty space next to him. He hadn't gone back to the master bedroom since he came back to Seattle. He refused to lay in a bed that Bella had deserted, it felt wrong in every way, shape or form. With sadness taking over his heart, he looked at the right side of the bed and reached to touch Bella's pillow. He was never presumptuous enough to think that she would have come with him after their date, but with this diary reveal and the way they parted, it seemed that Bella would never come back home.
With a sigh, he grabbed his phone, about to check his emails as he always did before going to sleep, but then he remembered that he was not supposed to do so. He looked at his mobile, his thumb hesitantly hovering over the screen before he pressed on Bella's name. He wasn't sure if she was already asleep but he still tried his luck, though she never picked up and was met with her voicemail.
He hung up but kept his phone in hand and texted her,
Again, I am SO sorry, babe. You have to believe me when I say that my intentions are never to hurt you. On the contrary, your happiness is one of the most important things in my life. ~ Edward
He was hoping that she would read it in the morning, first thing when she would wake up. But it seemed that fate was on his side because his phone dinged as soon as the screen went black.
I do believe you. And I know you always mean well. ~ Bella
As soon as he read the message, Edward tried to call again, but this time he was sent straight to voicemail after just one ring, a text appearing on his screen soon after,
Can we just text? ~ Bella
I want to hear your voice, babe. ~ Edward
I'd rather not if that's okay with you. ~ Bella
For a brief instant, Edward hesitated to try calling her again and insisting until she would pick up, but he refrained. He had a feeling that if Bella didn't want to talk was the same reason why she wanted to leave the restaurant so quickly, it was because she was crying and she didn't want to admit it to him. After all, Bella always did her best to never cry in front of him, and the only times it had happened, it had only resulted in her being heartbroken.
I really am trying. ~ Edward
I know you are. ~ Bella
And I know you mean well. ~ Bella
Edward watched the little dots come and go for two whole minutes, his heart in his throat, until a text way too short for the amount of time it took to write it finally appeared on his screen,
Can I please sleep on it? ~ Bella
Ok. ~ Edward
I'm not giving up! What I said earlier is true, Edward. But I think that it would be better if I slept before I say or do anything. I don't want to regret my words or actions when come morning. ~ Bella
Edward let out another sigh, looking at the ceiling as a little part of his heart broke. It seemed that every time Bella would tell him the words he had always wanted to hear, it was tainted with something. The first time it was when he literally saw her heart breaking after Valentine's night. And tonight … it was after their disaster of a date.
Of course. Just know that I'm only a phone call away. Or a text ;) ~ Edward
So am I, ^^. ~ Bella
Come home, then. ~ Edward
There was no immediate response to that, and for a moment, Edward felt that he had pushed his luck. But Bella's text was much more heartbreaking than the realisation that he might have pushed her new boundaries,
I am home, Edward. ~ Bella
You know what I mean. And I know what you mean. But I get it, I won't push. Edward
Good, let's not make it even more awkward. ~ Bella
Goodnight, Edward. ~ Bella
Goodnight, Bella. ~ Edward
