Chapter 5 – Work…. and Royalty?
I just stared at him. "Excuse me?"
"You're my mate. That pulling effect you feel, that's what that is sugar." He smirked. 'How dare he! I loathe that smirk.'
I noticed he still had his arm in front of me grabbing my opposite arm, still blocking me. His arm was strong. I suddenly got chills and threw him across my living room. I took a slight notice that I'll have to repair the floor. 'Damn it.'
"No, nonono. We can't be. Jaspar, we're mortal enemies, literally. This isn't possible." I backed up against the wall and slid down. Trying to breathe.
"Darlin' I won't take offense that you just through me across your living room floor," he sat up and stood, "I don't really understand this either. The fact you're the hunter doesn't matter to me. I know what this is from feeling it from others, I know what I feel for you is bigger than anything else, and…"
"Yes yes, know it all." I mumble. He laughed at me. He actually laughed at me! And his laugh made me smile as much as I wanted to growl at him for being a dunce.
"December, for what it's worth, I'm willing to work through anything, for you, to have this. I already know how lucky I am. I wasn't lying before. You have me, you, just you, without everything else, is perfect enough." He came and squatted in front of me.
"Jaspar this is too much. Not just being the vampire hunter/mortal enemy issue, but I'm eighteen. Regardless of the way I was brought up, true love and all that mumbo jumbo, I don't believe in it. Mostly because I was told I'd never have a family, never fall in love, and you know what, I was ok with that. I have a mission; my fate is sealed. I've been doing this for six years. With nothing standing in my way. I can't stop now." I finished my sentence in a whisper. But I knew he heard it.
"Sugar, sometimes one's fate deserves a slap in the face."
I shot my head up to him.
"Fate is fickle. Obviously, the path you were going down wasn't good enough for you. So, something or someone threw another pair of dice and thought this was better, therefore setting you on a new path. A new fate. A new future." He took my hand, the one with the tattoo. "Your tattoo doesn't warn you when I'm near because it doesn't need to. I'm not a threat to you, and on some level, you trust me, you trust that I won't hurt you. I'm sure if you didn't, it would react. I won't rush you darlin'. I've got all the time in the world to be by your side. I won't crowd you, but I won't leave either. I'll always be nearby. You'll feel it. I know you've got work to do, I'll help if I can, or rather when and if you'll let me. Here," he hands me a phone, 'MY PHONE!' "I programmed my number. Call or text anytime, doesn't matter when, I'm always up." He smiled.
I grabbed my phone. "Cheeky bastard, aren't you?!"
He got up and looked around. "I'll fix your floor." With that, he was gone.
"Cheeky bastard." I mumbled. I looked around and sighed. "This weekend sucks."
Monday came quick. Jaspar did come and fix my floor like he said. He did it quick too. We didn't talk much; I just did homework and he worked on the floor. Asked if I needed anything else, when I told him no, he nodded his head and left.
I felt bad. I was so confused. I tried to let it go, but I couldn't. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep. I did however, come across my vampires. I went out Sunday, and my tattoo burned. I followed the burning and came across a vampire. There was another one, a male. It seemed like they were training so I followed them. They led me to a bunch more. I can't take them all on, I'm not that stupid. I saw one with red hair, a woman. Seemed her and the tall male were leading this vampire fiasco. I made some notes and went home.
That was a lot of vampires for one area. I wonder what they were doing. I was standing in the parking lot against my car, waiting for the bell to ring.
"Hi, um December, right?" a voice said next to me. I turned my head and saw Bella.
"Yes, and your Bella." I said looking hard at her. I could visibly see she was uncomfortable. Good.
"How was your first couple of days? I know being new can be kind of overwhelming." She smiled and she adjusted her bag. I felt a vampire nearby and my tattoo burned. Seeing how Bella was here, Edward had to be close by. The idiot.
"It was fine. People mostly left me alone. Which is what I prefer. Tell that to your boyfriend. Also, tell him not to use you as a buffer, if he has something to say, tell him to come to me himself." I said kind of loud as I walked off. I kind of felt bad, Bella seemed alright, but if Edward was always going to be nearby, I didn't like that. Seemed like a nosy twit.
For the most part I made it through morning classes alright. Tried not to fall asleep. Especially when Jessica would talk. Lunch came, and I wasn't hungry. So, I decided to take walk in the forest.
I looked around and no one was watching so I ran. When I was just through the tree I stopped. Can't go too far, still have afternoon classes after all, ughhh. I sat down and looked over my notes. I still wonder what those vampires are up to. Judging from the news, there's been a lot of killings. Something is going on. Suddenly I felt a wave of calm and looked at my wrist, no reaction.
"Jaspar." I whispered.
"What is a beautiful maiden, such as yourself, doing in a gloomy place like this?" he drawled.
"I like gloomy."
"Hehe, as ever." He laughed as he sat across from me. "What ya doing darlin'."
"Nothing, just making notes."
"Hmm, say, darlin', did you talk to Bella today?"
"Well not really talk more like, hi, bye, so to speak. Why?"
"Well, Edward…."
"Is he always such a nosy twit?" I said looking at Jaspar with a hard look.
"He can be. Especially when he can't read someone's mind."
"Let me guess, he can't read mine, so he sent Bella to get the scoop. Am I right?"
"Now that does sound better than what he told me."
"He lies too? No, manipulate is a better word." I said shaking my head.
"Well, he was seventeen when he was turned so…."
"Ah, and there it is, he's an immature twit. He's stuck at seventeen. And Bella puts up with this?" I asked shocked.
"He's learning. But yes, he is immature at some times." Jaspar sighed as he scratched his head.
"I do feel bad for the way I talked to Bella, but I won't apologize for being a little rude when it came to Edward. I don't like him." I said as I wrote in my notebook.
"Off the topic of those two, anything interesting with any vampires other than my family?"
I looked at him hard for moment. 'Do I say anything about what I found? It would be nice to bounce ideas off someone occasionally. And these were a lot of vamps.' "Well, I did find a group. I followed two to a keep so to speak. But the news says a lot of people are coming up either missing or dead. Too much of a coincidence I'd say."
"Hmm, my family has actually been keeping tabs on that. We don't know who's behind it. But if it gets anymore conspicuous the Volturi will step in. That's the last thing my family needs right now. So, we were going to Seattle if it gets more serious than it already is. Seems like they're creating an army of some kind. Don't know why." He said as he stood and paced.
"Hold up, who's the Volturi?" I asked looking at him.
He stopped abruptly and looked at me surprised. "You don't know who they are?"
"Um no."
"The Vampire Hunter, doesn't know who the Volturi are? Incredible."
"Jaspar, stop with the antics, who are they?"
"They're the vampires you don't EVER want to meet. They're what you call royalty in our world. The Vampire Kings. Super old, super powerful."
"So, they're kings, is there like a royal court?" I asked sarcastically.
"Actually, there's the kings, queens, and the guards. Explaining will take longer than our lunch which is about to end…. right now."
RRINNNNGGGGGGGG
I sighed and packed up my stuff. We started making our way down the hill. We separated before anyone saw us, last thing I need is more gossip.
"I hope you know you're coming over to give me a history lesson about your Kings." I whispered. I knew he heard me when I heard a snicker and a "I figured," in that southern drawl of his.
until next time lovelies
