Chapter 6 – Volturi Storytime

After I got home, I was starving! So, I figured on making dinner. Decided on simple spaghetti and meatballs, and salad. That would be enough for leftovers for a few days. As I started on preparing my meal, I kept going back to what Jaspar said about the Volturi. If they're what vampires considered royalty. Wouldn't have Crowley known about them? Wouldn't he have told me? I know something wasn't right, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Also, why wouldn't he have mentioned the Cullen's? Unless he didn't know about them either? But "vegetarian" vampires, word would have gotten around. It's not like Crowley would've let them live either way, vampires are vampires. Right?

"Sugar, meatballs are burning."

I jumped what must have been four feet in the air. "Jaspar!" I cried as I tried to save my meatballs.

"Sigh, a little crusty, I can live with that, damn vampire." I mumbled as I turned off the skillet.

"Sorry darlin, you just seemed so lost in your thoughts. I turned off the noodles."

"Thanks," I said as I prepared the rest.

"You alright?" he asked as he helped shake the salad.

"Just a lot going on up here," I said as I pointed to my head.

"Isn't there always?" he quirked a smile.

"Point taken," I laughed as I sat down at the table.

"Hungry?" he asked as he sat down across from me.

"Just a bit," I said as I fixed my plate. "There's coffee if you want some."

He looked at the small pot, "thanks darlin'." He got up to pour himself a cup.

When he came back to sit down, I was already half-way through my plate. He looked shocked. I blushed. "What? I'm starving. Should've taken a snack at least. I know better."

"I'm guessing your powers take more out of you?" he asked as he sipped.

"Yeah, six years, you would think I would've caught on by now," I say as I finished my plate and got more. "Now spill, who exactly are the Volturi."

"Well, are you sure you want to hear about them while you're eatin'?"

I just quirked my eyebrow at him to continue. He snickered.

"Very well," he took a sip of his coffee, "they have been around for almost 3000 years."

I spat out my tea, "3000 years! And my boss never said anything?" I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"They live in Italy; do you have agents there?" he asked.

"Yes, so we should know."

"Not many humans know about them. Unless there's a reason for them to know. The Volturi also pay for their secret, so maybe your agents know, but do not speak of it."

"That's treason. It goes against everything we're taught. My boss should at least know and should've mentioned them in our teaching." I fell back against the chair shocked. But I moved my hand for him to continue.

"Aro, Caius, Marcus, are the three rulers. Kings if you will. Aro's wife Sulpicia and Caius's wife Athenodora round out the royal court. Now there of course are guards. The main three being Chelsea and the twins, Jane and Alec. Chelsea can manipulate relationships which is why Aro likes to keep her close. She maintains everyone's ties, so they won't go against the kings. Jane can cause pain by illusion. It's more mental, hurts like hell." He shifted uncomfortably. "Alex deprives you of your senses. Completely cuts you off from everything. There are two others, but they don't have gifts like these three. Felix is big and is used for strength. Demetri has high tracking abilities. He's been able to track down anyone that he's told to. There are other guards, but those are the main ones."

I whistled. "Damn. I haven't come across vampires with special abilities. Or at least none I've been aware of." I say as I gathered my dishes.

"They're rare. If a vampire does present an ability and Aro finds out, he usually tries to recruit them. If it's a power he really covets, he'll do anything necessary to obtain them."

He said that with such venom in his voice I turned to look at him. "What do you mean by anything necessary?"

"He'll kill the family so they would have no choice but to leave with them."

"That's, that's awful. Have you experienced this?" 'I hope not.'

"No. He has tried in the past. But since my family includes Carlisle, he stopped for the time being."

"Carlisle being your dad, right?"

"Yes. He has a friendship with him that he holds highly."

"Weird. So, what's their purpose?"

"They exist solely to keep humans from finding out about vampires. Once word spreads of a vampire or coven being reckless, they go and investigate and usually put an end to that vampire, coven, or any humans that found out about us. They uphold laws in regard to our race."

"Vampires have laws? And they follow them?"

"For the most part yes."

"I've never heard of such a thing."

"Heh, you thought we were just reckless animals sugar? No decorum at all?"

I blushed, "well obviously." I say scrubbing my dish. 'Stupid vampire.'

He smiled, "anyway, that's pretty much it. Basically, you break any of their laws, they find out, you die. Simple as that."

I turned to see him staring at the table. "There's something else you're not telling me."

He looked up and to me, "if the vampires in Seattle aren't dealt with soon, the Volturi will come. And Bella is still human."

I felt my stomach twist. "Keep her home. They don't have to know."

He shook his head, "last year, Edward and Bella broke up. Edward thought it would be best that he didn't involve her in our world anymore, so we left. We were gone for about four months. Alice had a vision of Bella jumping off a cliff and she didn't see anything after that, so she thought Bella died. She came to investigate and found out Bella was cliff diving. But she could see Bella was suffering with Edwards's departure."

"But she was safe. Being around vampires is dangerous." I said sitting back down at the table.

"Yes, she was safe for a time. But being away from one's mate, does something horrible to the person, or vampire. Over time, you become a shell of oneself. It's not pretty. Eventually you die. Edward and Bella both looked horrible. Edward is stronger because he's a vampire. Bella, I believe only made it through because of her friend Jacob."

I saw the look on his face when he said Jacob. "What's wrong with this Jacob?"

"Werewolves are not good company to keep, they smell too." He wrinkled his nose.

Other than the fact I thought it was cute when he did that, "werewolves? Here in town? Great. Just great." I sigh as I fell back in my chair again.

"You know about them?"

"I've killed a few before. To save a couple of villages."

"Well, these aren't werewolves per say, more like shapeshifters. They're part of a tribe."

"Oh, shapeshifters aren't usually a problem. They're rare though. And they're here?"

He nodded his head.

"Interesting."

"Well, after Alice found out about Bella, Rose had told Edward why Alice was here, started a whole big mess. Basically, he called her house, Jacob answered, told him Charlie was out preparing a funeral and hung up. Jacob was talking about a member of his tribe, but Edward thought…."

"He was talking about Bella. I'm following." I spoke.

He smirked, "yes, so Edward went to Volterra to discuss his death with the Volturi. They denied him because his gift of reading minds was valuable to them. Edward declined and decided to show himself the humans during a festival the city was going to have. Alice saw this and her and Bella raced to Italy to save him. They did, but…."

"They found out about Bella." I sighed.

"Yes. So, Edward has a limited time to change her before his time runs out and they kill her and him."

"So, if the Volturi come here to deal with the vampires, they're going to see Bella is human."

He nodded.

"We'll have to do something."

"We?" he smirked.

"Well yes, Bella doesn't deserve that kind of fate."

"I agree. We'll figure something out. Probably going to have to try doing something before they get involved. We want to avoid the Volturi coming at all costs."

"Seems to be a good idea. I'll help, if your family will let me."

Jaspar pursed his lips.

"Jaspar, does your family even know about me?" I asked as stood up and walked over to him. "They know about me…. right?"

"Not really. They think I'm hunting when I come here. Edward is suspicious, but he is busy protecting Bella that he doesn't have time to follow me around, as much as he'd like. Especially recently." He chuckled.

"You mean because of me?"

"Well, something interesting happened."

I just looked at him.

"After you and I met, he can't read my mind anymore. It's like it's shielded from him as well."

I thought about what he said for a minute, and I was shocked at my revelation. "Jaspar, you said we're mates." He nodded his head and smiled. "If we're mates, even though I haven't thoroughly acknowledged it, it seems my powers started protecting you."

"I had thought the same thing but didn't want to bring it up until it needed to be."

"I hate to ask this, but you also said a mate can't live without the other. That means if I reject this," I gestured between him and myself, "we'll die?"

His face saddened. "I will. I'm not sure about you since you are different. Your powers might protect you, but not without hurting here," he put his hand over my heart.

I sighed and put my hand over his, "Look, I don't know how I feel about me and you. I don't know how that's going to affect my work. I know it will at some point. I do feel something for you, I won't lie. Powers aside, I feel something if I separate the two. It's hard to do, but it's there. I don't want any problems between us or your family. I'm not sure how they'd react to you being mated to the vampire hunter."

He tightened his grip on my shirt and brought me closer. "I'd choose you over them in a heartbeat."

I cocked my head to the side and put my hands on my hips and looked at him.

"Well, figuratively speaking of course. You know what I mean darlin'."

"If I'm to help you, they need to know about me, and I'm intrigued to learn more about your family. A whole coven that are vegetarian."

"That means Edward." He said smirking.

"Sigh, yeah yeah."

"Behave sugar."

"I will if he will. But I'm sure once he knows my background, he'll run like the coward he is."

Jaspar just shook his head.

Until next time Lovelies :)
