Chapter 11 – Expected and Unexpected
I found myself walking with Bella through the woods. She was leaving her blood on the trees by a finger prick.
"I want to thank you." Bella stated.
"Huh…. What?" my mind was worlds away from the current task.
"Thank you." She said again.
"For what?" I had no idea why she would say that.
She pricked another finger and slid it across a tree as we walked by it, "for giving another alternative. I'm tired of Jacob and Edward fighting."
Oh, well. "It is your fault, Bella. Stringing two guys along the way you have been, isn't fair to either of them," I say as I put my hands in the pockets of my jacket. "I got tired of them going back and forth. I'm actually surprised Edward let me be the one to walk with you."
Flashback –
"Well, we could try to lure them somehow…." Carlisle said.
"Why can't we just ambush them before they come to us?" Emmett responded.
"We can't stray too far, less they get the upper hand," Carlisle replied.
"I like the idea of luring them, but we need to figure out a spot that's to our advantage," Jaspar replied.
"What about the clearing near the waterfalls? Where we played baseball?" Alice said. "I don't know how the end will come out, since I can't see the dogs." She said snidely.
"Hey, right here bloodsucker!" Jacob yelled point to himself.
"Hey, cool it, let's just go check it out." I say as we gathered our stuff.
Jaspar and I, along with Bella, Edward, and Jacob went as the others prepared things back at Carlisle's house.
"This spot will give us an advantage, it'll work. If Bella leads them here with her blood and scent and you walk away masking it, we'll be good." Jaspar said as I walked around. Looking at all the ins and outs, the rocks, which way they'll come according to Alice's vision. I was ok with it, but I heard arguing.
"The hell I will, I can mask her scent. They'll know something is up if they smell another vampire they don't recognize nearby." Jacob said.
"No way, she's not going with you. This is a bad idea." Edward snarled.
"It'll be fine." Bella sighed.
This arguing went back and forth for a few minutes. I got tired. "I'll take her." I said.
All four looked at me, Jaspar with a smirk on his face.
"What?" asked Bella.
"Well, it's obvious Jacob wants anytime alone with you, Edward being the overprotective idiot boyfriend sees that, and I'm tired of them arguing." I say as I throw my hands up in the air and look to Edward. "I can mask her scent. My shield will protect us both. I'll take her to you in the mountains and come back down to help." I sighed putting my hands on my hips, "That satisfy you vampy?"
I stared at him hard as he did as well. He looked like he was arguing with himself.
"Look, Edward, I don't like you or care for you at all, but I promise I'll take care of her. I look at Jaspar then back to him, "she's your girlfriend, you're Jaspar's brother, I wouldn't do anything to hurt HIM. If protecting Bella is part of that, then so be it."
He sighed, "fine."
End of flashback
"He can't stand Jacob; I like him enough. But Bella, why are you?" I asked.
"Why am I what?"
I had a feeling she knew what. "Why them both?"
She looked ahead as we finished up the last tree. "I don't know. Jacob was with me when I was depressed after Edward left. He brought me out to the light again. He's my best friend. I love him. But, Edward, I feel like he's, my soulmate. I love him too."
"Bella look at me."
She did.
I sighed. "I don't know anything about love,"
"But Jaspar," she interrupted.
"Jaspar, is complicated. But we're talking about you," I sighed.
"You have to choose. You can't keep them both in the dark," I said.
"I did, choose." She mumbled. "Are you still shielding us?"
I nodded.
"Can anyone hear us?" she asked. I shook my head no.
"Edward proposed last night. I said yes."
I took a second and chuckled. "You're such a silly human. But does Jacob know?"
She looked down and shook her head.
"You need to tell him."
"I know. I know." She sighed.
I looked around and felt a chill.
"There's a storm coming. We need to get you to Edward. Come on."
She looked confused at my hand that I held out.
I chuckled. "Well, we could walk and have it take us until tonight, or you can grab my hand and I can fly us up there. Up to you."
Shock stood in her eyes, "You…. You can fly?" she gulped.
"Well…. More like glide? You'll have to see won't you. You'll be the first."
She looked down at my hand again and grudgingly took it. We were off to the mountains.
We stopped just short of twenty feet below where they were staying. I didn't want Edward seeing us arrive.
"You're destination my lady." I said sarcastically. She laughed.
"You made it," Edward said as he took Bella's hand.
"You doubted me." I stated looking at him.
"I did, I'm sorry." He stated back.
"You have no idea what I'm capable of Edward Cullen." I looked at him. Then turned and started down the way I came.
"You're not staying?" came Bella's voice.
I didn't turn around and kept walking, "no, I have to settle my powers before a big fight. You two will be fine." I walked a few steps more then turned around, gave Bella a small smile, turned back around and ran. I saw a red wolf in the distance going up the mountain. 'Oh, that would be interesting, too bad I can't stay and watch.' Once I knew I was far enough I jumped and glided the rest of the way down. Once I landed Jaspar was waiting with a smirk.
"You look beautiful like that, did you know?" he said.
I looked at him and his eyes were black, not with just hunger but something else. I felt a flutter in my stomach but ignored it. "Shut up Jaspar. What are you doing here?"
"I thought m'lady could use a free ride home." He smirked.
"Can make it myself mi'lord." I bit back.
"Oh, I'm sure," in half a second, he had me on his back, "but I insist." He took of running at full speed to take me home. I hate this vampire.
"Here you are," he said sliding me off. The sun was starting to set, and it was getting colder. Windy as well.
"You and your family are hunting, yes?" I asked as we walked to my door.
"Correct. I'll come and get you on our way to the field. You'll be alright?" he asked concerned. Looking around.
"All feels unsettled right now, but yes, I assure you, I'll be fine. You need to gather your strength and so do I. It's something that I need to do alone." I say as I went to take his hand between mine. "Everything will be fine; I'll see you tomorrow." I kissed his cheek. He kissed my forehead then walked away. I went inside and closed the door.
I listened and once I knew he was far enough away I set to work. I got some herbs that were hidden underneath my floorboards in the bedroom. I went to the kitchen and started boiling some water. While that was going on I got my mortar and pestle and began grinding the herbs. Some sage, turmeric, lemon balm, rosemary, chamomile, ginseng.
"That ought to do it, and one more thing," I got some valerian. "I do have to meditate this one," I say as I add it. I got the boiling water and made the tea. After a few minutes of letting it set, I drank it. Then went into my room and sat down with my legs crossed. I had already set candles down around me. I began to breathe calmly. I started to feel sleepy. Once I relaxed, I reached down inside of myself to find the core of my powers, my hunter. Once I found her my eyes shot open, I saw in my mirror that my eyes were white and the candles were lit, "hello there old friend", so it begins.
The intense emotions that were going through everyone was A LOT to handle. I don't know how Jaspar has done this all his life, especially after he became a vampire. I have a new respect for him. I looked around the field and stretched and double checked to make sure my dagger was in the sleeve of my arm. It was. I charged it along with my powers last night. Apparently, the huntress in me was giddy with excitement as Jaspar grabbed my hand.
"We've got this sugar." He whispered in my ear. It caused a shiver to run through my body. 'Damn vampire.' He knew it caused an affect because I heard him chuckle. My tattoo burned.
"They're close," I whisper as everyone got ready.
There was impact. There were so many newborns I couldn't keep track of who was fighting who. But I didn't think about it as I got into rhythm, I cut through them like a knife through butter. After I took down three, I found myself mostly helping the others.
I felt a chill and my tattoo burned with an intensity it made me falter as I landed after decapitating a vampire with Jaspar.
"December?" he asked as he held me.
"I feel fury." I looked around and saw a flash of red behind the rocks.
"Victoria, she's over there," I pointed.
Jaspar looked but she was gone, "she might be looking for Bella."
"She's heading to them, Edward's not here, she knows." I had to catch my breath.
Jaspar looks around, "I've got it here with the others, go."
I looked at him and he had determination in his eyes. "On it." I took off in the same direction she went.
As I neared where Bella and Edward were, I heard struggling and saw a tree fall.
"Damn it." I say as I ran faster.
"Edward!" Bella yelled as I came upon them. Victoria and Riley had Edward in a head lock.
I put up my shield up and ran around behind them. I grabbed their arms and Victoria jumped and looked at me shocked, "Not this time red," and I pulled them away and Edward got it together and grabbed Victoria and a wolf came from behind and ripped Riley apart.
Bella was behind me as Edward held Victoria. She was snarling and trying her best to get to Bella.
"You bitch, I'll have your head!" Victoria snarled.
She suddenly stilled and looked at me. "You're the bitch." I said. My eyes glowed and she gulped. "I'm sorry your mate died but going after an innocent human isn't condoned."
"Who the hell are you?"
"The vampire hunter, your end."
"What? You exist? Please, just let me kill her and I'll leave. You won't hear from me!" she tried desperately to get out of Edward's grasp.
"It's your end Victoria. Edward?" I gestured. He nodded. I took out my dagger and touched it to her throat and it burned.
"Ahh! Ahh! Stop please!" Victoria begged.
I dug my dagger in further to where her neck started splitting. My eyes glowed brighter. Edward took that as his que and finished ripping her head off.
I flicked my lighter and tossed it to her body. The flames lit up a very nice purple.
"Is…. Is she really gone?" Bella mumbled looking at the fire.
I turned and looked at her. She gasped.
"Sorry Bella." I knew my eyes were still glowing and I closed them and calmed down. I felt Edward pass me to go to Bella.
"Yes, my love she's gone." He hugged her with his head on top of hers.
I opened my eyes and sighed. Edward looked at me. "Thank you."
I just nodded my head.
"Gasp…. December you're bleeding!" Bella exclaimed.
I looked down and saw blood on my hand. "Huh." I rolled up my shirt sleeve and saw a bite mark on my forearm. "Bastards."
"That's a bite mark!" Edward said alarmed. He put Bella behind him. I looked at him.
"Yeah, I need to get it cleaned up." I sighed and ripped the end of my shirt to wrap around it.
"Wait…. You don't feel anything?" Edward sounded confused.
"Huh? Oh, just a sting, but they take forever to heal." I say as I wrap it. "Regular cuts, heal within a few hours, these, a week. Damn vampires." I finished wrapping it.
"You mean, you don't turn into one? You don't burn?"
I looked at him and Bella and they were both confused. I couldn't help but laugh. After few seconds I noticed Edward was getting mad.
"Oh, fix those brows Edward. That's part of being a hunter. I don't turn if they bite me." I rolled up both my sleeves, "in this way Jaspar and I are alike I guess." I showed them my arms with a bunch of scars from bites.
"They're like mine," Bella said as she showed me hers.
"Life of a hunter, you don't make it through those kinds of fights without a little blood spilled." I say.
"So, you will never turn." Edward stated.
"No." I stated in return.
Edward looked to see the wolf coming towards us, "Seth says we'd better head back."
I nodded to him, "hey Seth." He whined to me acknowledging my hello.
Edward and I checked the flames to make sure all was good then we made our way down the mountain.
Until next time :)
