Chapter 30 The Honeymoon Part 4
"JACK!" Lucas and Elizabeth screamed simultaneously their hearts sinking to the pit of their stomachs.
Lucas jumped in the pool and was horrified when he brought him out of the water. Both he and Elizabeth stood over his limp body. Blood covered the front of Lucas's hand. He was trying to calm his racing heart!
"NO, NO, NO!|" Elizabeth screamed her face a look of absolute horror as if history was repeating itself. Tears were streaming down her face.
Lucas was trying to remain calm and keep his mind from traveling down that dark road. His eyes full of unshed tears. He turned Jack onto his side and lifted his arms above his head repeatedly while gently patting him on the back. He was completely relieved when by the fifth time the little boy gasped and water came spewing out. Lucas picked him up in his arms and they both took him to immediately find the ships doctor.
They walked into the ships infirmary and placed him on the bed. Jack was now crying hysterically. Both of them were holding onto him, Julie was standing beside them.
"Hello, I am Dr. Simon! This young one has quite a gash on his head, what happened?"
"He slipped at the pool and hit his head." Lucas said swiftly.
"I see! Was he alert or unconscious when you got to him?" the doctor asked.
"He was unconscious!" Lucas replied curiously wanting to know exactly what the doctor was thinking.
"Well, the gash on his head is large enough to need sutures. They have become very popular since the war. In order to do that for Jack, him being so young, I'm going to have to give him some ether." The Dr. replied.
"What does that mean Elizabeth asked?" She pulled Lucas close and held on to him.
"By inhaling the ether it will put him to sleep long enough for me to do the sutures. Doctors have been using it as an anesthetic since 1846 and it works quite well. Jack won't feel a thing."
"Okay!" Elizabeth said unsure of what was going to happen.
"Would one of you like to hold Jack on your lap to comfort him while I do this?" Dr. Simon asked.
"I will!" Elizabeth sat down and Lucas placed the still crying Jack in her lap.
"Momma, what is he going to do?" Jack asked crying on Elizabeth's shoulder.
"He is going to make you better son, by fixing the cut on your head."
Dr. Simon brought back a rag soaked in Ether. "I'm going to place this over his nose and mouth. He will go to sleep in about fifteen minutes, maybe a little sooner because he is so small."
After ten minutes Jack began to fall asleep. He rested his sleepy head on Elizabeth's shoulder. His eyes were puffy from all the crying. The doctor cleaned the gash, shaved a little spot on Jack's head where the gash was and began stitching the wound. Lucas watched over his shoulder the whole time making sure this doctor did not do anything other than what he said he was going to do and curiously watching the process.
"He is all finished and it looks like just in time!" Dr. Simon said.
Jack was beginning to stir.
"The sutures will need to stay in for ten days. He will need to keep them dry which mean no swimming and be careful when you give him a bath, that you do not get them wet. Also judging by the way you described the situation; Jack should take it easy for the next two weeks. No running, no jumping, no physical activity. It could pull his sutures and also aggravate his head injury. Jack may have a headache for a few days, rest is the best medicine. If he starts acting lethargic or differently or you notice an increase in pain or symptoms, please bring him back as soon as possible."
"Thank you Dr. Simon." Lucas shook his hand giving him a grateful look.
Lucas, Elizabeth, Jack, and Julie went back to their suites. Elizabeth changed Jack out of his wet clothes and laid a sleepy Jack in their bed, she then changed. Lucas had changed as well and then they crawled up beside Jack.
"Julie, it sounds like we are going to be spending quite a bit of time in this suite. You should go enjoy yourself. Take in the evening shows." Lucas told her.
She kissed her nephew. Lucas handed her some cash and she went to change so she could go enjoy the activities on the ship.
"Elizabeth, love do you want to go with your sister? I will be more than happy to lie here with Jack." He asked, while draping his arm over Jack and gently using his thumb to brush the tears off of her face.
"Not today! I think I will just stay here and when he wakes up maybe read some stories to him." She said rubbing her fingers through his soft hair. "Lucas my love, Thank you."
"For what." He asked with a surprised look.
"For saving my baby, you truly are an amazing man and I will never be able to tell you or show you how special you are to us." She said while grabbing for his hand and intertwining their fingers.
"Elizabeth, he is my baby too. You two mean everything to me and there is nothing I would not sacrifice to make sure your safe. That includes myself. I love you with all of my being!" He gently pulled the covers up over Jack and rubbed his back. "We should take a nap. I am feeling exhausted."
Soon they were all asleep. Napping together exhausted from the drama of the day and just glad that it turned out okay and they were all together and safe once again as a family. Lucas woke up around six and decided he would go get dinner and bring it back to the room; he slowly crawled out of bed trying not to wake his beautiful family. He went down to a Chinese restaurant and brought dinner back for them. He got extra noodles knowing Jack loved noodles. He couldn't help, but think this trip was not at all what he expected it to be. He thanked God that Jack was okay and hopefully he would heal fine.
Lucas walked into the room. They were both still sleeping. He gently woke Elizabeth with a kiss. "I brought dinner back for you guys."
"Let's wake Jack." She whispered.
She leaned over and gently shook him until he woke up. Jack rubbed his sleepy eyes and starting whining for momma. "Look Jack daddy brought you some noodles. You need to try to eat."
"Okay momma. I'm hungry." Jack replied softly.
All three of them sat down at the little table in their suite and ate their dinner together like families do. Lucas was cherishing the moment to be able to enjoy his family just the three of them together.
