Chapter 43 A Friend from the Past
Lucas immediately walked over to the man in the red shirt as he turned around, "Carson? I thought you were in Baltimore." He said patting him on the shoulder.
"I was filling in for a friend on this cruise ship for the last several months while he and his wife had a new baby. I got more than I bargained for. How are you doing and what brings you out to the tropics Lucas?"
"My Honeymoon, but I must say it has been filled with challenges." Lucas winked.
"Wait, you and Elizabeth?" He asked.
"Yes we were married right before Thanksgiving. Her and Jack have been such blessings in my life." Lucas told him excitedly. "I must say this trip has been less than spectacular. Jack has busted his head open, Elizabeth and Julie got lost, and now we are shipwrecked on a deserted island, oh and I found out I am having triplets."
"Wow, I can see how that might be overwhelming." Carson said concern in his voice.
"Can you come and check her out she was sick all night and I don't know if it was motion sickness or morning sickness? Lucas asked. "I really hope it isn't morning sickness."
"Absolutely, I would love to see Elizabeth, Julie and Jack again." Carson replied.
Lucas and Carson began the walk down the dark corridor to their room. Lucas led the way with the candle he had taken from the room. "So have you talked to Faith?" Lucas asked.
"We have both moved on. We were just never in the right place. It wasn't meant to be." Carson said solemnly.
"I'm sorry to hear that Carson." Lucas patted him on the shoulder as a sign of comfort.
"Don't be I am doing well."
"So you have no intention of ever coming back to Hope Valley?" Lucas asked hopeful.
"I don't think so Lucas." Carson replied.
They opened the door to the suite and Lucas entered having Carson wait at the door until he made sure everyone was up. They were up and dressed.
"Lucas, where have you been?" Elizabeth asked.
"I was checking out the situation and getting information. I also brought a doctor back with me to check you out Elizabeth." Lucas proceeded to wrap his arms around his wife and give her a soft kiss on the forehead.
"Lucas I am fine." Elizabeth insisted.
"Well, then you'll do it to ease my mind." He said adamantly as he rubbed her abdomen gently.
"Okay Mr. Bouchard! I hear you." She said teasingly.
"I have a surprise." Lucas announced.
He opened the door. "Carson!" Elizabeth and Julie said simultaneously.
"Ladies it is so wonderful to see you again." He said giving both of them a friendly hug. "Jack, Look at you and how big you have gotten." Jack stuck his hand out to shake Carson's hand like a perfect gentleman.
"I see you have taught him impeccable manners Lucas." Carson admired. "Elizabeth if you will lie down, I will check you out?" Carson asked.
Elizabeth lay down on the bed and Carson did a thorough evaluation. He listened with his stethoscope for quite a while on her abdomen.
"What is it? What's wrong?" Lucas was started to get jumpy. "Why is it taking so long, Carson?" Lucas was nonstop fiddling.
"Lucas man you need to stop talking so I can hear." Carson asked of him."
"Oh sorry!" Lucas replied. Then he started pacing the floor. His nerves were getting the best of him.
Julie was amused by his nervousness.
"Everything looks perfectly good. Congratulations you two! What a surprise this must have been?" Carson said excitedly.
"It was." Elizabeth replied.
"So, she is okay. Why was she so sick?" Lucas asked concerned.
"I'm sorry Lucas but I don't think the sickness was motion sickness. It might have been a little combined, but Elizabeth this pregnancy is sure to be different from your pregnancy with Jack." Carson informed them.
"What does that mean?" Lucas asked curiously.
"She is bound to have more morning sickness than she did before. Her body is changing so fast."
"Why do they call it morning sickness, it was all night." He said a little teasingly.
"The proper term is hyperemesis gravidarum it just means excessive vomiting." Carson informed him.
"So what you are saying is she could be sick a lot?" Lucas asked his face in a state of panic.
"I'm afraid so." Carson replied with a wink.
"I can't wait!" Lucas said teasingly but in apparent discomfort, dreading many more nights like that one.
Well, I will get out of your hair and let you all be.
"Carson, would you like to hang out and talk?" Julie asked.
"Sure, I have to do some rounds but feel free to come with me. It isn't like we are getting off this ship today." He teased.
Carson and Julie headed out the door.
"Lucas? Are you okay with all of this?" Elizabeth asked him concerned sensing he was trying to mask his discomfort. "You told me you would never be anything but honest with me."
Now he was feeling guilty and obligated to release his feelings which he did not want to do. "I'm sorry Elizabeth. I will be fine. I just have a weak stomach when it comes to vomit but I am sure I will get used to it. I will in no way let you down Love. You will see."
"I understand! I know you could never let me down." She said pulling him in for a quick kiss.
He wished he had the confidence in him that she did.
"Elizabeth, I am going to take Jack and gather as much food as we can that we can prepare over a fire. With there being no power everything is sure to spoil. Wait here and we will return shortly."
