Chapter 68 Big Brother Jack
Lucas and Elizabeth spent the rest of the evening tending to their three new children. Both of them were completely wore out and ready for bed. They realized by the time they got through feeding and changing it was time to start all over. Elizabeth's head was bobbing up and down and she was struggling to keep her eyes open. Lucas checked to make sure the girls were done feeding and then took them to the nursery to lay them down with Caleb. He decided he would bottle feed the next one in order to give Elizabeth time to rest. He did not have any idea how they were going to be able to take care of four children that young.
Lucas returned to their bed and just lay down beside his wife, draping his arm over the top of her and gently rubbing her side. He gave her a sweet kiss on the cheek and then fell asleep. He had no more than got to sleep when Jack came running in to wake him up by jumping on his stomach. "Daddy! Its morning get up I want pancakes!"
"Jack, son how about you crawl up here with us and go back to sleep?" Lucas said exhausted not wanting to get out of bed.
"No daddy, pancakes!" He said while shaking Lucas.
Lucas groaned and dragged himself out of bed. "Okay, Okay. I'm up son!
No sooner did they make it to the stairs when Amelia started crying. Then they all started crying.
"Daddy, is that a baby?" Jack asked excitedly.
"Yes son it is. That is your new brother and sisters."
"Momma had the babies?" He said curiously.
"Yes Jack. She did early this morning." Lucas explained as they both walked into the nursery.
"Daddy, why are they crying?"
"I don't know son. They may need a diaper change or be hungry." Lucas explained thinking maybe having them in the same room wasn't a good idea after all.
He checked Amelia's diaper and Jack watched every move. She is not dirty so she must be hungry. Then he checked Adelaide's diaper and she was wet so he changed her and laid her back down. Thankfully she went back to sleep. Caleb was not dirty either so he could only assume he was hungry.
"Jack this is your brother Caleb." Lucas told him as Elizabeth walked in. "What are you doing up?" He asked her with a kiss.
"You don't expect to do this by yourself do you?" She said teasingly.
"Okay, you feed Amelia and Jack and I will take Caleb with us." Lucas said.
"Daddy, momma, Can we return the girls for boys?" Jack said making them both laugh.
"No son, you get what you get. You got sisters and you will get to be the big brother to protect them for the rest of their lives." Elizabeth explained.
"Caleb and I will be best friends. I can not wait until he gets big like me daddy." Jack said as him and Lucas walked down the stairs to make a bottle gently swaying him trying to get him to quit crying.
Lucas got the pan on to heat the water to warm the bottle when Julie came down the stairs. "Oh let me hold my nephew!" She said excitedly.
"Julie would you mind feeding him so I can get Jack some pancakes?" Lucas asked with pleading eyes.
"Not at all." She took the warm bottle from Lucas and took Caleb into the family room while Jack followed her around with Caleb.
"Aunt Julie did you know I have two sisters as well." Jack said while hovering over Caleb.
"I do. I have seen them Jack."
"Caleb is my best friend." He told Julie as he grabbed Caleb's little hand.
"Jack, come eat your pancakes." Lucas called.
"Daddy, can I share my pancakes with Caleb?" Jack asked.
"Jack that is so nice, but Caleb can not eat that kind of food just yet, he is too small."
"Can we save it for him for later?" Jack asked curiously.
"I don't think so Jack." Lucas told him while giggling inside.
Lucas made Elizabeth a plate and went upstairs to take it to her. He took Amelia and laid her back in her bassinet and then gave Elizabeth her plate. "Why don't you eat and then try to get some rest. I will take the next one and Julie has Caleb. Jack absolutely adores him." Lucas told her giving her a passionate kiss. "He wanted me to put pancakes up for Caleb for later." That made Elizabeth chuckle.
She was starving. This was her first meal since giving birth to the triplets and she didn't even realize how weak and hungry she was. "Lucas I think these are the best pancakes I have ever eaten or maybe I am just starving." She laughed.
"Would you like me to get you some more?" He asked sweetly while rubbing her leg.
"Yes, please!"
Lucas went downstairs and got some more pancakes for Elizabeth and by the time he got back upstairs she was sound asleep. He put the pancakes beside the bed on the table and shut the light out in order to let her rest. As he was walking past the nursery Adelaide began to cry. He picked her up and figured she was hungry. He took her downstairs and made her a bottle. Then he sat down with Julie and Jack and fed his daughter and watched Julie and Jack play with his son. Jack was so cute trying to talk to Caleb as if he was able to talk back.
Lucas knew that Jack was going to be a wonderful big brother and wanted to include him as much as possible. He knew it would be the key to getting him to warm up to his sisters. It was going to be a very long journey and Lucas wanted to make sure that they did it the best they could.
