Chapter 9: Curves of Peril

It was the last day of events in the winter portion of the Animalympics, and today it was the always exciting event of bobsledding. In the previous games the Calamari Brothers of Europe made it all the way earning a gold medal despite a few blunders down the track. The secret of their success? All of them were having fun. Other notable teams were returning such as Europe's beaver team, the South American goats, the Asian Puffins, and the North American Foxes. The Cooper Gang were once again confident that this day would be free of either crime or misplay. Sly often imagined his group in this event many times, but then the dream came crashing down when he realized how on Earth everyone would fit in and who could participate. Murray would give the team a powerful start, perhaps too powerful of a start that they'd miss their sled, not to mention wouldn't fit in the sled either. Bentley wouldn't fit either with his wheelchair, and besides that wouldn't feel right anyway, even by Sly's standards.

Up first was the European beaver team, who in the last games had a crashing end with them out of the competition when their sled broke through the track, sending them flying onto the snow with their sled in pieces. This year they had hoped to rebuild their reputation after that folly, putting in extra time for training and viewing some pointers from their commander. The commander instructed them on a few key points of the descent, to make sure the same mistake couldn't be made again.

"Well lads remember what I said and give them a good show!" Shouted the commander. With that, the quartet of beavers started up their sled, and almost immediately got in their sled as they descended down the track. It started off perfectly normal and quite well for the beavers as they trekked downwards on the track. However, halfway down, a screw was heard loose, which then came off, sending one of the tracks on the sled to the left, which caused their sled flip of its right side, the team had to duck themselves in for the rest of the journey. They crossed the finish line with a time of 1:30 minutes.

"Well lads, a little better than the last, but we'll do better next time!" said the captain to his teammates.

The South American Goats were up next, ready to plunge down the slopes in their shiny new sled, having tackled the elements many times. As they started off in their sled, they slipped a little bit in their hooves, but recovered almost quickly. Just as it started going down the hill, they hopped right in as it began to gain momentum down the descent. Because of the awkward start, the speed wasn't the best to start, and the sled started fish-tailing around the track. They arrived at the finish line, shaken but better than the beavers with a time of 1:22 minutes.

Up in third position were the Asian Puffins ready to give Asia a gold medal or at least a bronze, for though they loved to compete, they were quite humble competitors. Despite their small size, their start off was pretty fluid and graceful, even as they got in their sleds. There were a few bumps down the track, but overall the best one so far as their sled crossed with a respectable time of 1:10 minutes.

Coming up fourth were the North American Foxes, who loved the thrill of excitement. Their start up was a little interesting as they did a little bouncy jump as they pushed their sled off, as an attempt to give their sled a little boost of speed. Though it was a rocky start for them, the descent down the track was very respectable, except for a bump near the end, which gave the team a time of 1:12 mintues.

The last competitors were the famous Calamari Brothers eager to add yet another gold to their collection, all from having fun in their competition. Like the last Animalympics competition, their start off was terrific, all working together in harmony, the brothers braced themselves for every turn and drop even if the drops made them scream whenever there was one. No bumps in the track for this group and they crossed the finish line with a great time of 1:07 minutes. An easy gold for the Calamari brothers, with the Puffins getting silver, and the Foxes getting bronze, and the other two took their medals with stride. Even the Cooper Gang was thrilled with the accomplishments offering a standing ovation for the Calamari brothers.
