Disclaimer: I do not own Oregairu
I held my breath and put all that experience of sneaking into my dads office just to eavesdrop here.
"So what in the name of miru tights..."
"Stop. Don't stare into the abyss or the abyss will stare back."
"Sensei, there is otaku and then there is chunni. Why are you bringing back such old references? Don't tell me you are a crimson demon?"
"If only I could cast explosion on your head, it would be worth it."
"You remind me of someone from the P.E class. What was it all about anyway?"
"Don't ask. I did it to protect you from gaining interest of Yukinoshita Haruno."
"Yukinoshita... have I heard that name before? I think it was in the local magazine."
"I bet you were too focused on the model's boobs to actually read it."
"No. It was more the thighs for me."
"At this point, I am starting to really worried for your future. How about I put you in a club to fix your problem?"
"Sorry teach, I am perfectly fine in the go home club. Unless you are giving me a harem club where I can have a bunch of oppais thrown at me?"
As their banter continued, I realized that I had nearly missed out on an interesting toy because of my misconceptions. I had always held a fascination towards the concept of self-control because of her own experience.
While most of my male and many female friends pretended to be proper and yet could not stop ogling at me, I was really disappointed in them. To think that they could not even control the most basic of their urges like lust, let alone greed for money. These people could never be a part of any of my long term strategies.
At the same time I was also envious of them, of their ability to let go of all control. I had never been able to do that. I could not get drunk. No matter how hard I tried to lose myself and drown the world out, there was always a part of me that acted like an uninvolved third person.
Always judging and evaluating my every move, rationalizing and never allowing me to make any mistakes, or even any unorthodox successful moves. It all became predictable and boring for me. This is why I had been looking for a monster of logic.
This boy was someone special as well. Someone who could let himself drown in the present while also anchoring himself to logic. Like a bungee jumping adrenaline junkie who never let his rope be cut. Not a monster of logic but rather a pet of one.
People like him weren't that rare, working adults were able to often reach this stage but rarely did that happen with a teenager. Wearing a mask was not difficult, even Hayato had one by now. The real ability was to take that mask off when needed. But having a selective mask that allowed convenience while only showing part of your intentions at this age was quite the achievement.
He was an unpolished gem, but it appeared that Shizuka-chan was trying to insert him into Yukino-chan's club. That wasn't good. He would not suit Yukino-chan at all.
I would have to make better preparations for him. I decided to call my old cute little junior who still really looked up to me.
Shiromeguri Meguri
I looked into my many many contacts to find the name. ~Megu~Megu~Megurin~
"Yahallo, Meguri-chan"
"Haru-san-senpai"
Ah, that fluffy happiness that I can feel just from her voice on the phone. She is the only one who likes me so much without any ulterior motives. She is not dumb by any means. She is just too positive to have any cynical valuations for me and ignores my bad habits even when she sees them.
"You changed your way of greeting Senpai?"
"Ah, yes, I heard some first years using this greeting and thought I should join in on the new fad. We may be old timers but we should move with the time you know!"
"As expected of Senpai. If you think its a good idea then sure, I'll go with Yahallo as well."
She really is so cute. I normally hate yes-men on principle who agree with everything like idiots but Meguri-chan is an exception.
"So you called me for some task to give me, Senpai?"
"Of course not. I know how busy you are with your student council president position. In fact I have found someone who might be a good fit for your student council and lighten your load."
"Really? They must be something for Haru-san to personally endorse them, I'll gladly have them. What's the name?"
"It's a second year boy named Hikigaya Hachiman. But don't just take my word for it you know? Even I am capable of making mistakes so properly evaluate him yourself."
"Haru-san and mistakes? Your jokes are the same as before."
"Hey, you are not just a little follower any more. You are the leader of the entire student body which gives you a responsibility to be circumspect no matter how much you trust me. Have a little self-awareness okay?"
I had tried the same thing of playing the villain to her that I did to Yukino-chan but it had the exact opposite result. Even I am starting to fear why she trusts me so unconditionally.
"By the way, isn't your little sister also in second year? I have yet to meet her. Class-J if I am not mistaken? Why not her? Surely she must be over-qualified too if she is your sister?"
Oops. If Yukino-chan heard this, she might start hating Meguri-chan too as an extension of me. I better nip this in the bud.
"I really hope you learn how to read the mood. Not everyone takes comparison to a family member as a complement, you know? Specially if they are overly competitive. I suggest using the boy as trial case before trying with my sister. And if you do, try not to use my name, okay?"
"Well, if Haru-san-senpai says so, then I guess I'll wait for it. Does the boy have any distinguishing characteristics? Not that its necessary of course."
"Hmmm, his eyes are special. They are like eyes of a hungry Piranha fish targeting the meat they have just seen. I almost feel like keeping him in my fish tank."
"There you go again Senpai with your high level jokes. Hahaha."
"..."
But I am not joking? Well Whatever.
"So if you are in the school, do you want to grab a coffee?"
"I really wish I could but got some university assignments to finish. Ugh, so bothersome."
"They are a bother for Haru-san too? University must be more difficult than I imagined."
Um, not really. I am just slacking off. But I can't say that here and now.
"Well then, see you later."
"Bye Senpai."
With this there will be more than enough chance to evaluate and polish the boy, to see if he is treasure or trash.
