Rex wakes up to someone's face hovering over him, gently and quietly giving his forehead a kiss.

The figure's hair is long and dark and their face is covered in shadows.

Having just had a nightmare involving Van Kleiss and his needly golden hand, Rex understandably yelps and rapidly backs away from the figure, almost falling into the space between the bed he's in and the wall, but he's luckily saved by the fact his body is firmly tangled up in his blankets.

"Woah, mijo, it's just me," an unfamiliar voice whispers non threateningly.

Rex calms down somewhat as the voice is clearly not Van Kleiss's, but his nerves and nanites are still jittery. He carefully maneuvers his hand out of the blanket to wipe away the gunk in his eye before he squints at the figure at the foot of his bed.

The figure is clearly female, which definitely rules out the possibility of Van Kleiss being the one who just kissed him if the voice wasn't proof enough. The figure is also wearing a lab coat…

But they aren't Holiday.

The lab coat fully reaches down to mid-thigh unlike Holiday's cropped labcoat and the way the figure has placed their hand on their hip is foriegn to Rex. Furthermore, Holiday's hip doesn't jut out as high as this woman's does.

It takes him a moment to put all these features together and it slowly dawns on him that the figure before him is his mother.

But that's impossible. His mother has been dead for almost six years by now and certainly hadn't been this…old? Yes, old is the word, when she had died.

But then the events of what had transpired right before he fell asleep hit him like a truck, and Rex realized this was this universe's Rex's mother.

"Oh," he says out loud, his voice gravelly from sleep. "I didn't recognize you mo-, um, mami. I thought you were…an assassin or something."

More like he thought she was his universe's biggest creep, but an assassin worked just as well.

Rex pulls his blankets closer up to his chin, not wanting to accidentally reveal he wasn't who other Rex's mother thought he was. His feet poked out the other end of the blanket and Rex silently cursed other Rex's slightly too small blankets as he curled up on himself.

"An assassin?!" laughed Violeta. "What games have you been playing before bed, mister? ¡Dios mío! I thought we agreed you're not to be playing those kinds of gorey games, especially right before bed."

"I-" Rex stuttered, not sure what to say. He was still a bit shaky from waking up and thinking Van Kleiss was hovering over him and his brain wasn't thinking as fast as he would have liked it to.

"Kidding, kidding, I know you're not playing those sorts of video games. I was just checking if you were actually asleep on time for once. I didn't know you were going to wake up when I kissed you…Unless you were actually awake and were playing your Wii U past your bedtime again. Do you have it hidden underneath your blankets right now?"

Rex watches in horror as Violeta in slow motion, courtesy of adrenaline and his nanites, reaches towards his blanket, obviously intending to see whether or not Rex was curled up with a video game console. Something under the bed frantically taps the leg that hangs over the edge of his bed.

Rex startles from the touch and his brain panics and blurts out the first thing to pop into his head that would undoubtedly stop the blanket from being pulled off of him.

"I'm not wearing any pants!" he yelps.

Violeta's hand halts.

She pauses.

"Strike two," Violeta says, tutting and shaking her head. "You've used that excuse twice now this week. You better hope your butt you're lying when I finally get tired of it and rip your blankets off you. I'm worried about your sleep schedule. I know your father and I come home late but that's no excuse to go to bed on time."

"I understand."

Violeta raises an eyebrow and for a second Rex thinks she might press Rex further on the issue but she instead leans in to give him another kiss on the forehead and she ruffles his hair playfull.

Rex squirms and blushes, not used to this type of affection and Violeta laughs. Rex thinks this is the first time since his last total memory wipe he's had someone show that kind of love.

Well, he does get a lot of head pats from Six, but those are usually done on by Six on autopilot. Rex is fairly certain Six just got used to patting his head back when Rex barely even reached Six's shoulders and still acted like a little kid.

This is purposeful and casual and makes Rex guilty about stealing affection meant for other Rex.

"Wow, that's a lot of gel in your hair. Make sure to wash that out in the morning, your hair is super crunchy," Violeta says.

And with that she gets up from the bed and walks to the door. Rex scoots back over to the center of the bed.

"Buenas noches, dulces sueños," she says as she closes the door.

"Night, mami!" Rex calls after her.

There's a moment of silence that hangs in the dark before someone underneath the bed lets out a deep sigh.

"Sheesh, I thought we were gonna get caught there for a second!" says other Rex, his muffled voice coming from directly underneath Rex.

"Good quick thinking on the pants comeback, I almost thought you were too sleepy to come up with a good excuse quickly enough! Sorry for touching your leg without warning, I was trying to fully wake you up."

Rex leans over the edge of the bed and peers under the bed.

Other Rex shoved under there, pushed up against the wall. He's grinning and his face is lit up by the bright glowing screen of some gaming console, which Rex presumes to be the aforementioned Wii U Violeta was talking about.

"Your parents are still alive?" he asks other Rex, his voice small and shaky.

"Uhhh yeah…?" other Rex says as he pulls himself out from underneath the bed. The space is a tight squeeze and just barely big enough for him to wiggle out.

"Is yours…not?" he asks as he brushes away the dust bunnies clinging to his clothes.

"No," Rex says sadly. "They died in an explosion years ago. Not many family pictures survived so I didn't recognize my- er, your mom."

Rex blushes.

"Oh. Sorry for your loss?"

"It's alright. I've had amnesia since then, so it's hard to remember I had parents in the first place."

"Oh," other Rex says again. He hums, unsure of what to say next. He lingers where he's standing.

Rex watches as his other self starts to say something and then stops.

"I'm gonna go get ready for bed. You can go back to sleep, I'll get out the sleeping bag and sleep on the floor. You can stay in my bed. I'll set an alarm so we can wake up early and get out of the house before my parents come in the morning to wake me up for school."

Rex bids okay and snuggles deeper into his blankets. They are softer than his Providence issued blankets and his eye start to feel sleepier sooner than normal.

Rex spends his last moments of consciousness sleepily watching other Rex search for his pajamas in his messy closet.

By the time other Rex leaves the room and comes back dressed in his night clothes, Rex is once again dead to the world.
