Disclaimer: I don't own either RWBY or Digimon.
A/N: So, this took longer than I thought it would. My only excuse is that work got in the way, and I didn't have much time or energy to write. Things have calmed down now, so I hope that I'll have more time to write, because I really want to get this story out to you guys. Now that that's out of the way, I hope you all enjoyed part 2 of the prologue, I had a lot of fun writing it. The last chapter might have gotten a little dark, but Ren and Nora have a pretty dark backstory all things considered. That's all I want to say for now, so let's get on to the next chapter.
S
The citizens of Vacuo have a reputation of being lawless criminals with no respect for authority who are willing to steal from anyone and everyone if it meant that they could get ahead in life, and that's half-right. Most Vacuans are willing to steal from others, and other criminal acts, but that doesn't apply to everyone. In the capital of Vacuo there exists a small phrase, "Protect your own," and denizens of the capital live and breathe by that motto. As a result, any insult on an individual is an insult against all of those he associates with, and retaliation is expected. Because of this, fights have broken out over small insults, sometimes even ending up in murder. The Kingdom's government don't have much power, and law enforcement is filled with corrupt officers willing to accept bribes to "look the other way." Vacuo truly is a kingdom for the strong, where the weak are eaten alive without a second thought.
Stealing is a skill everyone in the city streets needs to know, in fact its a skill everyone in Vacuo needs to know period. To live in Vacuo without knowing how to steal is like living under water without knowing how to swim. Point is, stealing is a must, and its something that Sun Wukong is very proficient at, especially in regards to his age. Despite being only 10 years-old, Sun was able to pickpocket and steal from older and more experienced crooks, and manages to get away almost every time.
"HEY! That's my wallet! Give it back you dirty faunus!" Shouted a balding middle-aged man at a retreating blonde figure. Said figure was Sun, a blonde child with short, wild hair who wore a white vest, a grey undershirt, blue jeans, and black sneakers. But perhaps the most notable thing about him was his blonde monkey tail. Sun is what's known as a faunus, which are basically humans with animal traits, such as tails, ears, or claws.
Anyway, Sun is currently running from the police, but he's easily able to lose them in the packed streets of the city. Laughing and smiling, Sun raced all around the city, before stopping in a small alleyway, but it wasn't a normal alley. Wooden boards were propped up against the wall to form walls, a tarp for a roof, and a smaller wood board for a door. This was Sun's base of operations, his friend's meeting spot, and, "Home sweet home," Sun said to himself, smiling at his humble abode, it wasn't much, but he made it himself. Walking into his home, he sets the stolen wallet down, along with other stolen objects, on a table with a broken leg, causing it to lean a little bit, and lays down on his bed, which was just an old mattress he found on a street corner. He took a look at a watch he had next to his bed, stolen of course, and figured he had a few hours before his friends were ready to meet up, and decided to take a nap. Normally, he'd just go steal something again, or play a prank or two, but lately his normal hobbies have been less fun, and he's starting to get very bored. He hardly ever gets caught in the act, but when he is caught he's easily able to outrun any who try to chase him. Not to mention that his friends have been hanging around him less and less. He'll confront them about it latter, for now he wants to take a nap.
When Sun awoke, he was feeling refreshed and ready for anything. Looking at his watch, he noted that he had 15 minutes before he and his friends meet up at the other hangout spot. While they normal meet up at Sun's place, they like to hang at other places around town to keep things interesting, today they were meeting up behind an abandoned school. Without a moment of delay, he left his house and started walking to his destination.
Sun was very familiar with the layout of the city, and knows which alleys and walkways are less populated, and which ones take less time. By sticking to those routes, Sun managed to arrive at the school unnoticed and with 5 minutes to spare. 'I wonder if anyone else is here yet." Sun wonders to himself, he's never been this early to something before, so this is a new experience for him. 'If anyone is there, I bet they'll be happy to see me early for once.' With a large smile, and excitedly runs behind the abandoned school, hoping to see one of his friends. As he walks past a dirty window, he overhears familiar voices deep in conversation.
"Hey, is Sun here yet?"
"No, you know how he is. He'll show up like 30 minutes late"
"Tch. What else can you expect from that animal. No offense..."
"None taken. That monkey is a sad excuse for a faunus. He gives all of us real faunus a bad name."
"Where is he? I swear, if he's late one more time..."
Sun didn't hear to last of that sentence because he quietly backed away from the window. He tries to hold back his tears, but a few manage to fall. 'Is that what my friends think about me? Am I really that worthless?" Nothing is making sense anymore. They're friends so they care about each other, right? It has to be a misunderstanding, something said in the heat of the moment that they didn't mean. Silently, he hid behind a nearby dumpster, trying to make sense of the situation, to make up any excuse as to why his friends said what they did. The sound of a door opening broke him out of his thoughts, and he sneaks a look past his dumpster, his friends were walking out the school's back door. There were 4 of them, and aside from the one faunus, each one looked unremarkable. The 4 of them started speaking very loudly, to the point that Sun didn't have to get closer or strain his ears to overhear their conversation.
"Screw it, I'm done waiting for him. I'm not gonna let him waste our time."
"Yeah, forget him. It's not like he's important anyway."
"You guys want to come play video games at my house? I got the latest console."
"No way, they're sold out in every kingdom. How'd you get one?"
"I just bought one from a scalper. My family had enough money for it."
As they moved further and further away, Sun found it harder and harder to hear their conversation, but what he did hear hurt, it hurt more than anything else in his life. They never invited him to their houses to hang out. They didn't even tell him they had houses, he assumed that they were street orphans like him. What more secrets were they hiding from him? Did they even consider him a friend? He shakes his head and wipes the tears from his eyes. 'I know, I'll talk to them about it. I know they didn't mean it, they're just joking. Friends insult each other all the time, right?' With those thoughts in his head, he slowly followed his friends, trying to build up the courage to confront them.
Sun ended up following them for a few hours, never managing to draw up the courage to go up and speak to them, always hanging around in the shadows. While they said they would go home, they walked around town, doing random things normal friends would do, like visit a store, eat at a restaurant, and other things they never did with him. Eventually, Sun couldn't stand watching them any longer, and decided to walk around town on his own, far from them.
During his walk, he thought about the first time he met them; it was about 2 years ago, he had just stolen something and the police were after him. Sun had ran into an alley, where he quite literally ran into the group. They decided to hide him from his pursuer, and lied saying that he ran past them. At first, Sun was conflicted; deep down he had a feeling that something was off about them, and that he shouldn't trust them, but that wasn't based on any sort of evidence, instead it was his initial gut reaction. But they covered for him, hid him and lied on his behalf, so his brain rationalized that his mistrust was paranoia from being chased, that they were good people. They were the first people to ever show him any type of kindness, that had to mean something. Like they were fated to be best friends forever.
Kicking a rock, Sun continues to walk down a mostly abandoned street. His thoughts and emotions swirling around in a mess that threaten to split his head open. He wasn't supposed to feel like this, he's Sun, the guy who's always smiling and having a good time, he's supposed to be invincible, but he can't muster the energy to make a smile, not even a fake one! He kicks the rock one more time, this time a little bit harder than he meant too, and it ricocheted off a lamp post into a nearby alley.
"Ouch! Who did that!?" Came a familiar voice. It was one of his "friends." Sun didn't have much of a chance to react, because the entire group ran out of the alley.
"Tch. So the no-show finally appears. Better late than never right?" Says one of the kids, slowly walking up to Sun. Placing his hand on Sun's shoulder, "You probably overslept again, right? It's nothing new, so we'll forgive you." Those words were what Sun wanted to hear more than anything else, and yet, he couldn't help but feel like they were slightly off. But Sun wanted to believe them, that he made a mistake, that they were talking about someone else, that they were just joking, so despite his true feelings, he closed his eyes and threw up a big, fake grin. "Y-yup, you got me. Haha haha...sorry guys. You know how I get sometimes..." He laughed, as fake as his grin. If the others noticed his discomfort or lies, they didn't show it.
"You so late, you gotta steal a bunch of stuff for us to make up for it," the reptile faunus replied, slinging his arm across Sun's other shoulder. "If you can, try to get me a nice watch, the last one you gave me broke, so I've kinda been wanting another one."
"S-so what are you guys doing?," Sun asked, hoping to keep their suspicion off him.
"Why don't you see for your self." And they dragged him over to the alley they were just in. Sun was confused at what he saw; on the ground was a child, younger than any of them, lying on the floor. It had seemed that Sun had wandered around for longer than he thought because it was already night, and due to the lack of light, Sun couldn't make out any of the features of the kid. "Some kid was messin' around on our turf, so we decided to teach him a lesson. I know, how bout you get a few punches in too? I mean he is the taking things you could steal." Sun gets dragged closer to the kid lying on the floor. As Sun gets closer, his heart starts beating faster, and his chest starts constricting. He tries his best to keep his breathing normal, and the others don't seem to notice. Finally, Sun stood over the kid, with his friend by his side. Now that he was closer, he noticed things he couldn't before, such as the kids black eye, and the numerous bruises on his arms and legs, not to mention the tears flowing out of his one good eye. Sun stood there for a solid minute, just taking in as many details as he could. His friends were looking at him confused, but Sun paid them no mind.
"Yo, what's taking so long man?" One of his friends asked impatiently. "Oh, I get it. You never threw a punch before, so you don't know how to do it properly. Here, I'll show ya, watch closely now." The boy walked next to Sun, and cocked his fist back. For a split second, Sun didn't see the same kid, in his place he saw another kid, one that looked around 5 or 6 with blonde hair and a monkey tail. Sun's body moved before he could think.
Before the "friend" could launch his punch, Sun's fist collided with his cheek, sending him tumbling to the ground. Sun couldn't believe what he did, and he stood there, staring at his clenched fist. All of his other friends looked at him, shocked.
"Sun, what are you doing? Why'd you hit him?"
"Useless monkey can't even throw a punch right."
"Hey, we're talking to you."
Sun tried to respond, but he couldn't. In fact, he could hardly breath. He just punched his friend in the face, but the worst part was that it felt good.
"Say something, you dumb monkey!"
"I-I don't know. I just didn't want to hurt this kid, a-and my body just moved on its own. Why are you even bullying this kid anyway? He hasn't done anything wrong."
"Just cause we felt like it, I guess. We caught him stealing something and followed him around. We learned that he's an orphan, so we decided to hit him."
Sun couldn't believe what he was hearing. These were the same guys that helped him all those years ago. Part of him wanted to not believe it, but he can't deny it any longer. These guys don't care about him, don't think of him as a friend, and are willing to hurt anyone just because they can.
The guy he punched gets up, holding his cheek where Sun punched him. "Look, I don't know what's gotten into you, but if you step aside and let us finish what we started, I promise we'll forgive you."
"No." That one word was enough to freeze all of them in their tracks. Sun has never refused them before, even when they ask him to steal from someone dangerous. They don't know what to expect from the blonde faunus anymore, since he's so far off script already. The first one out of their dazed state was the only other faunus of the group. As soon as he was out of his stupor, the other faunus ran up and tried to punch Sun. While Sun has never been in a fight before, he's spent years sharpening his reflexes by stealing, and running from the cops, he was more than ready to duck out of the way of the attack, and quickly delivered a punch of his own at his attackers stomach. The faunus fell to the ground, clutching his abdomen in pain. This confrontation knocked the others out of their shock, and they started to rush Sun. His superior reflexes let him dodge their attacks, but he really couldn't do much in return; because it was 3 on 1, and he was inexperienced when it came to fighting, Sun couldn't land any hits.
During their fight, someone must have discovered them, because someone shouted, "HEY! What are you kids doing?!" Without missing a beat, Sun ran away from the fight.
He kept running, and running, and running. He never wanted to stop. But when he did stop, he didn't feel like he thought he would. He expected to feel exhausted, tired, sad, angry, or something like that. But instead, he feels refreshed, happy, relieved. While he was running, he thought about his relationship with his friends, or well ex-friends now, and finally connected the dots. How often his friends would ask him to steal for them, how something would suddenly come up when he took a break for the day, how he always took the fall when they got caught. They weren't real friends, they never were; he didn't lose friends, he never had them in the first place, and that hurt less than the former. The only problem is that the others knew were he lived, and it would take a while for him to move everything to a new spot, but that was a problem for future Sun. Present Sun is too busy feeling high on his own happiness to even care at this point.
Sun was too distracted with his own emotions that he didn't notice the strange lights in the sky, nor the shooting star heading right for him until it was too late. It crashed right before his eyes, the force of its landing pushing him onto his back. Rising out of the crater was that device identically appearing around Remnant, and Sun couldn't look away. Without a moment of hesitation, and without tearing his eyes away from the device, he rose from his prone position, and grabbed it. It started lifting him up off the ground, but he didn't care. This thing, whatever it was, was his, not something that he stole, and not something he found in the trash by coincidence. It showed up in front of him from the sky, he wouldn't let it go for the world. It's not like he had friends or family to keep him here anyway.
By his own free will, Sun Wukong is nowhere to be seen.
A/N: And that's a wrap. I mention that life was the big reason for why this chapter is so late, but that isn't the whole truth. It played a big part sure, but another part was actually writing it. As far as I know, Sun hasn't had any info about his backstory revealed, so I had to come up with a lot of this stuff myself. Sure I might have used the overdone idea of making him a street orphan, but I hope I gave an original enough spin on it. Some of you might be asking, "Why did you do this to Sun!? Does everyone in your fic need a tragic backstory!?" For those of you asking that, I want you to take a good, long look at RWBY, and you'll see why. Pretty much all of team RWBY has tragic backstories. Anyway, hoped you guys enjoyed the chapter. I'd promise that the next one will come out soon, but work might get in the way again. For those of you that read this far, let me know what digimon partners you think the characters will end up with, I'd love to see what some of you guys come up with, and if you can, give a reason for your choice as well.
