Queen

Persephone was more for dominoes than chess, but she appreciated the fact that the queen was the most powerful piece in the box—able to go in multitudes of directions with no limits. Even as a casual player, she imagined most chess matches were about protecting the queen as much as the king.

When Hades crowned her Queen of the Underworld, she felt the same sort of power flowing through her. Goddess of spring and shadows both, if she gave a command it was obeyed to the letter, and up top, the mortals clamored for her attention and bounty even more than when she lived with her mother.

Still, it was frustrating beyond words what Hadestown had become over the years—and at first with her approval. Even more frustrating was that even as Queen, she was powerless to change her husband's mind.

Perhaps, she thought, she should take lessons from the chess queen.
