Part 2: Resolving the Dispute
Jason went to his old neighborhood. It was still as bad as he remembered . . . Run down . . . Shabby . . . Dirty faced street kids. And yet, he also remembered there were a few good times as well. Dad had gotten a job at the amusement park, and every day after school, Jason went to meet him. He got to play the games and ride the rides all for free, because his Dad maintained the rides. Their lives were going well at first, until Mom got sick, and Jason's Dad lost his job, all because of a certain clown. Jason didn't want to relive those memories, but what could you do, ignore the past?
'Maybe I shouldn't have come back here,' Jason thought.
"Hey Mister!"
A dirty-faced kid with a kit got Jason's attention.
"Shine your chrome for ten bucks."
"Sure . . . Do a good job and I'll throw in an extra five. " Jason recognized the kid but didn't give any indication on the outside. He just sat there as the kid shined the chrome on his bike. When the kid got closer to his handlebars he leaned in as if to ask Jason a question.
"You want to stay away from this area," the kid said. "Someone's trying to muscle in."
"Who?"
"Don't know, but he's got an enforcer," the kid said as he shined the handlebars to a mirror-like finish.
"Here," Jason lifted the kid onto his motorcycle, so the kid was sitting in front of him. "Make it easier so you don't have to stand in the street."
The kid continued to shine the chrome of Jason's bike. "Calls himself Flamigo."
Jason lifted the kid down once he was done.
"There you go Mister."
"Good job," Jason commented. "Here you go." Jason handed the kid a $20 dollar Bill.
"Gee thanks . . ."
"You did a good job. Just don't spend it all on sweets." Jason started up his bike, did a U-turn and headed out of his old neighborhood. What the kid told him was valuable information. He headed back to the cave to look up about Flamingo.
As Jason drew closer to the Manor, Samantha felt Jason's aura. She got up, took a deep breath and headed inside the Manor. She was nervous, uncertain on how Jason would respond, but she did care for Jason. 'Just like I care for this entire family,' she thought. She walked down the stairs to the cave just as Jason was pulling in.
Jason parked his bike and went over to the bat computer and tapped into the police files on Flamigo. 'He's one nasty character,' he thought. 'Crazy too. Goes after innocents and tortures them. Enforcer for the right money. He was supposed to be in Arkham. What's he doing out?'
Samantha noticed Jason was sitting at the computer. She walked over to him, book in hand and tapped on his shoulder.
"Yeah," Jason said, distractly reading Flamingo's file. 'Who would hire such a sick bastard with half a brain? Literally.'
"Can you face me, please?" Samantha asked, confidently.
Jason turned so he was facing Samantha. The look on his face was neutral, but his eyes were red. He did his best not to show that he had been upset enough to cry.
Even so, Samantha could see that Jason had been crying. She took a deep breath and smiled. "Jay, I want you to succeed at want you want at heart, to become a nurse, but I see you more than that. I see you as a doctor, helping people. I want to help you take care of this family as well. You could probably teach me a thing or two instead of just healing people." Samantha held the book out to him. "You don't have to worry about this family breaking apart either. I want to stay and watch this family grow and watch you become the Doctor everyone sees you becoming."
Jason didn't expect that. He examined the book that he had thrown. 'Oh, shit did I damage it?' he questioned. 'No, there's something stuck inside it.' Jason opened the book to the page that held the paper. His eyes went wide when he saw what it was. 'It's a drawing of me as . . As a doctor.' Jason looked up at Samantha. "You . . . You did this . . . For me?"
"Yes. do you like it?"
"Yeah . . . Yeah I do. Thanks . . . Look . . . I'm sorry for what I said . . . It's just that . . ." Jason paused not knowing what to say. It was hard for him to express himself. He closed off his thoughts, keeping them private. 'I don't fear criminals, but when it comes to my brother's especially Tim . . .'
"No problem Jaybird. I understand. I'm sorry for saying what I said as well." Samantha wrapped her arms around Jason with intent to hug him.
Jason hugged her back. "I don't like it when we fight." Jason was so scared that she was going to take Tim with her if she were to leave. He recalled their words, that were said in anger. Replaying those words in his mind, he reacted just as bitter, just as petty.
"Come on, lets go get something to eat. I'm craving something sweet and i know you're probably hungry too."
"Yeah . . . I am . . . Oh shit I have to tell Bruce there may be a new mob boss in town. He's hired a really nasty character."
"I'll go with you," Samantha stated. "I have nothing else to do right now."
"Okay," Jason answered. "I just hope this new character isn't going to start a crime wave."
