Pokémon Crimson Gold

Chapter 14: Chikorita's big battle

Ethan trained both his Chikorita and Flaaffy for the next three days in order to prepare for his battle with Bugsy, who in their trip to the well had proven Ethan wouldn't be able to defeat him as easily as he would have liked.

On the fourth day, Bugsy was finally ready to reopen his gym, after taking care of all the trouble with Team Rocket. This was the day Ethan would head out and face him.

Ethan with Chikorita by his side. Knocked on the entrance to the gym. He knew Chikorita was more powerful, and this would prove to him he was right.

Just then, a man came and opened the door. "You must be here to challenge the Gym Leader?" He asked.

Ethan took one last look at Chikorita then looked back. "Yes. I'm Ethan by the way."

"I'm Darrell, I'll be the referee for your match." Darrell said.

Ethan walked with him to the stadium where he would do battle with Bugsy. The gym seemed to be decorated like a forest, there were even what appeared to be actual trees in there.

"Here It is." Darrell said, as Ethan stood right by the battlefield.

"Ugh, where is Bugsy?" Ethan asked.

"Right up here!" Ethan looked up; he saw Bugsy. He was sitting on a tree branch above everyone. He jumped down, landing on his two feet.

"Hello Ethan, been a while." Bugsy said, crossing my arms.

"Hello Bugsy, ready to give me that badge?" Ethan asked smugly.

"Oho, well that's up to you," Bugsy chuckled.

"How'd it go back with the Team Rocket situation?" Ethan asked.

"In the past three days no Team Rocket members have been seen anywhere near Azalea Town. I think we both did our job pretty well, and as for the Slowpoke we found, we sent them all to Goldenrod over the course of those few days, and there in the hands of professionals." Bugsy said.

"Good to here, now let's do this."

"This will be a three on three between Gym Leader Bugsy and Challenger Ethan!" Darrell said. "Are you both ready?"

"Ready." Bugsy said, readying his Pokéball.

"What if I... don't have three Pokémon?" Ethan asked.

"Scratch that, make it a two on two, Darrell." Bugsy said.

"Understood." Darrell declared.

"Alright then, you're up. Go Ariados!" Bugsy said, throwing his Pokéball.

Bugsy's Ariados was released, it immediately let out a stern shout, showing it was ready to battle.

Ariados first huh, Ethan thought, pulling out a Pokéball.

"Flaaffy, let's show him how it's done." Ethan said.

"Flaaffy!" Flaaffy roared, it surged with electricity.

"May the battle begin, go!" Darrell stated.

"Flaaffy, let's begin with Thunder Shock!" Ethan said, Flaaffy blasted a big volt of electricity.

"Use String Shot to dodge." Bugsy told Ariados.

Ariados used its web to swing from branch to branch, easily dodging the Thunder Shock Flaaffy used.

"Flaaffy use charge into the moment it's done!" Ethan said. Flaaffy listened and used Charge, raising the power of its electricity. The longer Ariados swung, the stronger Flaaffy would get.

"Hmph, not a bad plan, but it won't work. Ariados, web Flaaffy with String Shot." Bugsy said.

Ariados, from the treetops, fired a strong web at Flaaffy, tying it up instantly.

"Darn it!" Ethan cursed, scared Flaaffy would be out of the game so soon.

"Ariados, Bug Bite!" Bugsy yelled.

Ariados jumped down from the trees, and proceeded to bite into Flaaffy, who still couldn't move. Ariados bit away at some webs, the speed at which it attacked was enough send Flaaffy knocking back.

Flaaffy slowly got back up, it was damaged sure. But could still continue.

"You're Flaaffy is impressive to be able to get back up after that attack, you've trained it well." Bugsy said, he was confident in victory. "Ariados, quick! Shadow Sneak!"

Just like that, Ariados had completely vanished into the shadows, completely concealing its presence.

"Woah, that's a Ghost type move!" Ethan said stunned. "Alright Flaaffy, maybe it's best if we return for now."

Ethan tried to return Flaaffy to its Pokéball, but no matter the clicks it wouldn't work.

"Wha, did this thing malfunction or something?" Ethan blurted out confused.

"It isn't a malfunction, while concealed, I had my Ariados use Scary Face. An attack which refuses to let a Pokémon return to its Pokéball." Bugsy declared.

"Great." Ethan said, beginning to sweat.

"Flaaffy, we'll win this round. I promise." Ethan yelled. "Try and stay aware of your surroundings!"

"Chika Chika!" Chikorita cheered her teammate on.

Flaaffy looked around, staying wary of Ariados, who could jump up and attack any second now.

Ariados finally appeared right behind Flaaffy, Flaaffy tried to turn, but it was too late to try and defend. Ariados unleashed a fierce Poison Jab, sending Flaaffy to the ground. Luckily Flaaffy began to escape being poisoned, but it still hurt bad.

"Ariados, leap and use Bug Bite!" Bugsy shouted.

Ariados jumped on Flaaffy, biting it for what must have been a dozen strikes, and then leaping back in case Flaaffy tried to use any moves.

"Flaaffy!" Ethan yelled.

"Hmph, it's over." Bugsy said smiling. "Ariados, let's go, String Shot once again, and from the treetops same as last time.

Ariados, from the highest branch, strung Flaaffy within his web, leaving Flaaffy, on top of the Scary Face, with no escape.

Ariados slowly raised Flaaffy within his web, it crawled down, ready to use Bug Bite once again to finish off Flaaffy.

Ethan amid his panic, knew he had to risk it all. "Flaaffy use Discharge, quick!"

Flaaffy surged with blue electricity, completely shocking the battlefield in multiple directions, a jolt of electricity began to connect up Ariados' web, but Bugsy command it to use Shadow Sneak and dodge.

Flaaffy broke free of the web, it had used up most if not all of its electricity.

"Flaaffy, now Take Down, to your right!" Flaaffy formed with red aura and charged into its right. It somehow managed to locate Ariados and smash into it.

Ariados was knocked into the ground, that Take Down did an extreme amount of damage.

"But how'd you know!" Bugsy asked.

"Among all the thick webs on the ground, I noticed one small strand of web leading to the right of Flaaffy, seems like Ariados webs are too sticky for its own good!" Ethan said. "Now just a little would be enough. Thunder Shock let's go!"

Flaaffy charged with electricity, although it was true Discharge was a move that unleashed all stored electricity, Flaaffy had charged enough earlier in the battle that he had just a bit left to use, but this would be its last time for the rest of the duration of the battle.

Ariados was instantly zapped into oblivion. It was knocked out cold.

"Ariados is unable to battle! Gym leader Ethan, send out your last Pokémon!" Darrell said.

"Return Ariados, you did wonderful." Bugsy said as he returned it, pulling out his next Pokéball. "Scyther, let's do this."

Bugsy released his Scyther, whose presence was able to shake up the atmosphere in the room.

"Scyther!" It howled fiercely.

That dreaded Scyther, huh, alright I'll have Flaaffy damage it, then send in Chikorita. Ethan planned.

"Flaaffy, we need electricity and quick! Use charge!" Ethan said.

Flaaffy tried, but it was truly out of electricity. It just couldn't find any to muster. It needed to recharge.

"Scyther, Quick Attack!" Bugsy said, and with that, Scyther rushed at an unbelievably fast pace, crashing into Flaaffy.

Insane, it's even faster than Falkner's Pidgeot. Ethan realized.

Flaaffy got back up. Even though Ethan wanted, he could not recall it due to the Scary Face from earlier.

"Flaaffy Take Down!" Ethan yelled. Flaaffy went in for the attack, but Scyther easily dodged, making Flaaffy take the brunt of the hit from the recoil.

"Now Scyther, X Scissor!" Bugsy said. Scyther went in for the attack at insane speeds, slicing into Flaaffy, and knocking it out upon the blow.

"Flaaffy!" Ethan yelled.

"Flaaffy is unable to battle! Challenger Ethan, on to your final Pokémon.

"Flaaffy come back." Ethan said as he returned it to its Pokéball. "That was awesome, I'm always psyched to see you battle."

Ethan turned to Chikorita, and gave her a reaffirming look. "I know you can take Scyther, now go and make me proud!" He said.

"Chikorita!" Chikorita yelled, jumping to the stadium ground.

"I hate to say this Ethan but the battle's over. You're Chikorita has a double disadvantage to my Scyther, who's both a bug type and a flying type." Bugsy said smirking.

"Type advantage isn't everything Bugsy. I trust Chikorita, I know she can do this." Ethan said.

"Really, well Scyther's not here to save you from that Weezing like last time, you really still think you've got this." Bugsy said, while Scyther was sharpening his claws.

"I'll just have to show you then." Ethan quietly muttered.

"Alright, may the battle continue!" The referee yelled, signifying the Trainers to continue.

"Chikorita, go and weaken it with Growl!" Ethan yelled.

"Scyther, out speed it with Quick Attack." Bugsy said.

Scyther quickly rushed into Chikorita, throwing her threw into the air.

"Chikorita!" Ethan yelled.

Chikorita fell, but quickly bounced back on her feet.

Ethan smiled, "Alright, Razor Leaf!" Chikorita listened and shot the leaves straight at Scyther.

"Scyther, destroy them with a rapid Fury Cutter!" Bugsy said. Scyther began to quickly slash at the leaves, slicing them up with little issue. By the time it was done, Scyther faced up to see Chikorita, who was right in its face and landed a heavy Tackle attack, straight in its face, knocking the Scyther back some.

"Nice maneuver," Bugsy said, complimenting Ethan.

Scyther took not much damage from that trick however, he was back to standing on his feet, more mad than hurt.

"Scyther, Chikorita can't hide, use X Scissor!" Bugsy yelled.

Oh crap! If Chikorita gets hit with that move even once she's done for. Ethan began to realize. "Chikorita, get out of there!"

Chikorita managed to dodge the X Scissor, with a swift side jump.

"Scyther Fury Cutter to your left!" Bugsy yelled.

Scyther's eyes glowed with rage, it swept right past Chikorita right behind her, with no time for her to dodge.

"Chikorita, look out!" Ethan warned.

Scyther smashed its claw right into Chikorita, sending her to the ground.

"Chikorita!" Ethan yelled.

Chikorita laid flat on the floor, she was shaking in pain, it had taken a severe beating.

"Chikorita's done for Ethan, just as I told you, this battle is won." Bugsy said proudly.

Ethan began to think back about his history with Chikorita.

….

"Now, please choose your first Pokémon carefully, this will be your best friend across your entire journey." Elm explained, reading off the last words from his paper.

On the left, was Cyndaquil, the fire mouse Pokémon. It looked shy and nervous, not at all like Ethan. Juxtaposed to its timid look was the fire that raged on its back.

In the middle was Chikorita, the Leaf Pokémon. On top of its head, was a long, green leaf, hence its name. It was cute, yet confident looking.

On the right, was Totodile, the Big Jaw Pokémon. It had striking looking red spikes, from the head down. Despite its tough demeanor, it looked silly and kind of goofy.

Ethan not only came with the intention of choosing Chikorita, but also felt a connection with her.

"Isn't it obvious, I've known for a long time which one I'd be choosing when I got here today." Ethan said, confident in his decision.

Ethan got on one knee and pet the Chikorita before him. Chikorita's eyes lit up with happiness. Cyndaquil and Totodile besides it looked up at Ethan in awe.

Chikorita happily jumped into his arms, and that was the start of their journey.

….

"Haha, hahahahah!" Falkner laughed.

"What's so funny?" Ethan asked, giving a softer fake laugh.

"Pidgeot, Roost!" He said, smiling viciously.

Around the damaged Pidgeot formed white feathers with coated Pidgeot in a blinding glow

"What did you do!?" Ethan asked, puzzled.

"Roost, a status move which recovers up to half of damage sustained in battle." Falkner said, crossing his arms. "It's over."

"What!" Ethan said, he had no idea status moves could be that formidable.

Chikorita got even more angry at the thought of this.

"You lost Ethan, now say goodbye to Chikorita! Pidgeot, Sky Attack!" Falkner commanded.

"Pidgeottttt! Pidgeot squawked as it zipped across the field at beyond max speed. It moved like a sonic boom.

Ethan couldn't react to an attack that fast, he couldn't do anything about it. Boom. Pidgeot crashed into the ground, causing a huge explosion erupting a big chunk ground in the battlefield.

"Chikoritaaaaa!" Ethan screamed.

But against all odds, Chikorita managed to dodge the attack, just barely. In what felt like slow motion to both her and Pidgeot, Chikorita bashed her head into the speeding Pidgeot, sending it blasting off into the battlefield.

Pidgeot's crash caused a huge explosion in the battlefield once again, that seemed like a Sand Attack had went off. Ethan had to shut his eyes at the sight of it.

"I win, I'm the victor!" Falkner screamed, eyes wide opened, not caring about the particles.

"No stupid, I am!" Ethan yelled back, protecting his face.

Ethan reopened his eyes and was shocked at the sight he saw. Pidgeot was down on the ground completely unconscious. Chikorita stood proud besides him, she was heavily damaged as well, but she made it.

"Chikaaa!" She yelled once again giving a stern battle cry.

"Pidgeot is unable to battle, Chikorita wins, making Challenger Ethan the victor!" Jeffrey said, happy Ethan won.

"Yes Chikorita! You did it!" Ethan yelled, jumping on the battlefield to go hug her.

Chikorita ran to go hug her trainer. The two hugged and Ethan spun her around joyfully. "I knew you could do it Chikorita, thank you!"

….

"Chikorita and I have been through thick and thin together, we've been through tougher times before, I know Chikorita. I know she can win this!" Ethan said hopeful.

It was then when Chikorita slowly began to get up, she was shaking, but still ready to battle.

"Chika!" She yelled, showing she was not going to back down.

"That's who Chikorita is, me and her have bonded for life. I know her, and this is nowhere near her breaking point!" Ethan said confident in his decision.

"Then you'll just have to watch her being torn apart, Scyther X Scissor!" Bugsy yelled.

Scyther came forth to Chikorita, he charged strong enough to break the ground below it. He threw his two arms back preparing the X formation. Chikorita had no choice but to try and use her leaf to block it.

The X Scissor came in full contact with her leaf, since she swung it in an attempt to block the devastating move. The collided hit caused sparks in which added fierce intensity to the situation. Chikorita was being forced back, it was quite clear she would lose this, but she still refused to give up.

"Scyther! End it!" Bugsy yelled, Scyther listened and pushed back with full force.

Chikorita was being even more pushed back, if this kept up, she may even lose her leaf.

"Chikorita!" Ethan yelled.

"C-Chika!" She yelled, it was then when a shining blue light began to overtake her, causing Scyther to pull back.

"Isn't that, no way." Ethan said.

The light left Chikorita, she was now much larger, with a much larger neck, on top of being now yellow. Her head leaf had enlarged as well.

"Bayleef!" Chikorita, now Bayleef exclaimed.

"Chikorita... evolved." Ethan said, he was mesmerized by what he had just seen. His Chikorita he had been traveling with for what felt like weeks now, had evolved.

"It's not every day a Pokémon evolves Ethan. Be grateful you have a higher chance winning this battle." Bugsy said.

Ethan raised his Pokédex, scanning Bayleef.

"Bayleef, the Leaf Pokémon. The scent of spices comes from around its neck. Somehow, sniffing it makes you want to fight."

"Alright Chiko- I mean, Bayleef. I'm so proud of you, you've evolved! Now let's see what you can do!" Ethan exclaimed excitedly.

Bayleef turned her head to see Ethan. "Bay!" She said smiling.

"Sure, let us see what it can do. Scyther, Fury Cutter!" Bugsy yelled, Scyther appeared to the side of Bayleef, slashing her in her gut.

"Bayleef you, okay?" Ethan asked.

She tried to swing her leaf at Scyther, but Scyther managed to dodge.

Bayleef began to glow with a white light, it was shiny, filling the room with light. The glow then left, she seemed to have somehow recovered from the damage.

"A new move?" Ethan said, surprised.

"I recognize that move, it's called Synthesis. Your Bayleef has healed itself up some." Bugsy told him.

"Wow, that sounds a lot like Roost. That move's a keeper." Ethan said.

"Scyther. Let's get serious, Sword's dance." Bugsy yelled. Scyther was overtaken with a golden aura, it roared as it appeared to have become stronger.

"S-Swords Dance?" Ethan asked.

"It's a status move which greatly enhances Scyther's attack strength, one hit from X Scissor should do it. Do it Scyther!" Bugsy said.

Scyther listened and rushed to Bayleef, once again with X Scissor, it came forth to Bayleef, charging at full speed.

"Bayleef, Poison Powder!" Ethan yelled; it was Bayleef's ace move.

Bayleef released a strong Poison Gas, which engulfed the charging Scyther, instantly poisoning it. Scyther was shocked by the purple jolt.

"I had no idea Bayleef had that kind of move." Bugsy said, shocked.

"Now Bayleef, Razor Leaf," Ethan said.

Bayleef swung her long leaf, striking the poisoned Scyther with many leaves, causing it to crash into the ground. And just like that, Scyther was out.

"Scyther is unable to battle! Challenger Ethan is the winner!" Darrell announced happily.

"Alright Bayleef you did it!" Ethan said, jumping onto the battlefield to hug his newly evolved starter.

Bayleef turned and ran to Ethan, she tried to hug him, but ending up knocking him into the ground.

"W-woah, you've gotten so strong now," Ethan said chuckling. Bayleef rubbed her head against Ethan, hugging him.

"Scyther nice work out there, return." Bugsy said calling back Scyther to its Pokéball. "Great job you two."

"Thanks, now about that badge?" Ethan said, holding his hand out.

Bugsy pulled out the Hive badge, which made Ethan even more pumped.

"Here you are Ethan. That was a good strategy, saving a hidden move like that." Bugsy said, handing the badge to Ethan.

"Alright let's go Bayleef!" Ethan said excitedly as him and Bayleef took their leave.

And there we have it, Chikorita has now evolved to Bayleef! Not going to lie, at first I was super based, and didn't want to evolve Chikorita, sort of like how Ash never evolves his Pikachu, but I knew everyone would hate that, so I decided to evolve Chikorita, which is fine by me, since I love Bayleef!
