Algernon Croaker was a bit disbelieving of the day, though to be fair it began yesterday when Albus stopped buy. He definitely didn't expect to be heading to Gringotts today, let alone bringing his retired predecessor with him, but then knowledge of the abominations they were going to look at was not exactly widely known, and that was for good reason. He looked out on his mentor, but her cloak hid her form totally. He supposed it was just as well. The last thing she needed was her identity being generally known. It, was, of course, too late for his own.
He stepped in Gringotts, followed by his mentor, and was quickly lead to a large room with quite a few people in it. The most striking was the blue haired group of youngsters. The next group was clearly Gringotts top curse breaker team. He knew all their profiles and had tried, and failed, to poach all of them at one time or another. King Ragnok, Albus, Severus Snape, and Amelia bones were all here as well. Remarkable.
It was more remarkable when they brought them to a room with what he guessed were the two horcruxes Albus had mentioned along with some abomination he thought must be the result of the Dark Lord stealing a human baby. He forced his occlumency to the fore as his lunch was in danger of coming back up. At least all three were behind some of the finest wards you couldn't buy, well unless Ragnok really liked you, and sadly he didn't like their outfit all that much. He saw Pettigrew as well, but that sorry excuse for a human didn't interest him, though no doubt Amelia would have questions.
Garnok spoke first, "Algernon, would you or your friend like to verify that we have all that remains of him?"
Algernon gestured his mentor. Really, he was hardly a slouch, but he'd bet more on the Goblin's team than his own skills here. There was a reason he had tried to poach them for his own staff.
The gray clad shrouded form walked up to one of the presumed Horcruxes and began writing runes in the air, quickly forming an elaborate spell matrix around the one, with lines that immediately stretched out to the other and to the abomination, but went no where else. Algernon allowed himself to breath when his mentor nodded.
He said, "We'll there you have it. I don't know how you accomplished it, but you have the unspeakables thanks."
Garnok nodded, even as the cover was removed from the first container. Above them the roof retracted revealing a movable crane. On the far side of the room a decent sized barrel had its top removed by a goblin dressed up in full protective gear. Then another goblin controlled the movable crane and caused it to lower a two sided bucket thing that fell around the presumed horcrux and then was slowly picked up, also picking up the horcrux. The operator then moved the Horcrux over the vat of something, before lowering it to just above the surface and operating another control that slowly released it into the amber liquid.
Seconds later a shriek and smoke was heard. The Horcrux was clearly destroyed.
Garnok asked them, "Would you care to verify again?"
His mentor repeated her earlier spell. Only the one Horcrux and the thing remaining. A few minutes later not even that. His mentor verified again, this time on the thing. Only it remained.
Ragnok stood. He said, "This concludes this part of the presentation. We have no plans to ever reveal that he made these things, and suggest you do the same."
Algernon said, "I'm sure Amelia will use appropriate discretion, but what of these kids?"
"They are part of the reason we got this far. Their memories will not be tampered with."
"Very well. I'll keep an eye on Fudge as well." Algernon sighed. "It would be nice if keeping him from making matters worse was not our primary responsibility these days. I need better help." He glared at several members of the Gringotts team. They all smiled at him.
Amelia asked, "The execution of that thing will be at the 2:30 presentation?"
"It will," Ragnok assured.
"And Peter Pettigrew. Have you interviewed him?" She said the word interviewed with a bit of scorn.
Ragnok smiled. "We have. It was a short process. Simple veritaserum. He was the Potter secret keeper. Sirius black is innocent. I also have a nice list of death eaters."
He held out the list to her. She took it and turned to Albus. "Make sure you get our idiot minister to the main event. Let him take credit for all I care. Distract him, but buy me time. I've got a Christmas shopping list to complete." Her expression was Grimm.
Ragnok said, "I believe our premier curse breaking team, for which I think Mr. Weasley shall remain a part of, is not currently particularly busy. Perhaps they could be of assistance?"
Amelia said, "I would appreciate that."
Algernon said, "My own team will also be available, though I don't pretend we are nearly as good. We are here to serve."
"Good. Now is there anything else?"
Albus said, "I suggest taking Mr. Potter and his friends. They are quite adept at, well, quad casting of all things. They could probably shatter some wards, if you needed that, and I would prefer they not be here when we finish this."
Harry was the closest. He looked at the others who nodded then added, "If we can help, then of course we will."
Amelia looked back at Albus and asked, "Are you sure?"
Albus nodded.
Their first stop for the entire team turned out to be Malfoy manner. It's wards were by far the best. Garnok led the group to the plateau overlooking the manner and its wards.
He said, "Lucius wanted us to do these wards, but we refused. He settled on the leading Russian group, who conveniently enough owe us a few favors. One of them got us the ward plans."
After spreading the plans on a camp table he continued. "I'm not quite sure what Lucius did to annoy the Russians, but they, apparently, deliberately introduced a cascade ward failure potential in the design."
Samantha looked closely at the design before seeing what he found. "The ward anchors. He is using that dark arts abomination for power, and if we knock it out." She smiled. "Ooh. This is going to be quite interesting. I suggest we go no closer than where we are. Actually let's back up another 100 feet or so, just to be safe."
Amelia bones asked, "Is this going to kill the occupants?"
Garnok shrugged. "It shouldn't. The wards are correctly designed such that a failure is directed outwards. I'm a bit surprised the Russians agreed to work with those particular abominations. While I doubt they had in mind our method of attack, a half dozen corporeal patronuses would still blow it instantly. Perhaps they were Lucius's idea?"
Amelia asked, "What about anti-ap and portkey? I'd rather not drag this out."
Samantha said, "I have a ward set that will work. We will be ready to activate them the moment after the wards blow. We can't before, or they would be taken out too."
"Good. My aurors will go in and seize the Malfoys, and bag the obvious. Can you also provide some temporary wards to lock this place up?"
Garnok said, "Yes, but there might be a delay of an hour or two till things stabilize enough, but we can do it."
"Very well. I will continue on with Algernon's team after. Send me a patronus when you can catch up."
Garnok said, "There is no need. We will not need a full team to finish the temporary wards here. I will arrange for backup to protect us, and you can take the other half of my team and the Hogwarts students with you to the next site."
"If your sure?" Amelia asked. Harry and the others started walking closer, trying to hear what was going on.
"I am."
"We'll that is a relief. I hate to ask this, but could you perhaps mobilize a few more curse breaking teams?"
"By myself, no. I can't authorize the expense. I can ask though."
Harry said, "I'm not sure how much it costs, but I'm sure I could help. Sirius could as well, probably."
Garnok said, "We are talking upwards of twenty thousand galleons, particularly for the emergency callup. Would that be okay?"
Harry shrugged. "Sirius and I could probably do ten each. It's a lot, but I'd rather these people be in jail."
Amelia said, "Even if you did pay, the ministry would pay you back if I had any say in it."
Garnok said, "I'll get it done. Ragnok will no doubt be reasonable here as well, though he may want you to at least consider his position in the future once or twice."
"Just consideration? No absolute favors," asked Amelia.
"Of course not. We will deal fairly."
Amelia nodded, even as Garnok stepped away to arrange for more help.
Harry could hardly believe he was just standing here overlooking Malfoy manner, let alone what they were about to do. He just prayed they succeeded. Lafiel was inside his arms with her hands over his. She just fit there better than the other way around. Also covering his right hand was Hermione's right, with Luna's left covering his left. It was a bit awkward, all in all, but he certainly wasn't complaining.
Garnok said, "I hate to bring this up, but do you fully understand what your target is?"
Harry said, "Their anchors are almost certainly magical children, likely muggleborn, that were given a dark potion and encased in runic containers. There are four anchors. We know where each is. Our fundamental purpose is to drive out the darkness from at least the closest one. Your warders will then move in and try to save the children. It probably won't work, but you will try. Just neutralizing the dark magic in one, will allow you to move in, and will cause the wards to explode outwards, away from the house and the anchors."
"Good. Does anyone have any questions?"
None were asked. Their expressions grew focused.
"Just remember. Your purpose is important. I know you know this, but your lives are also important. Don't burn yourself out to do what we so far have found impossible."
Luna said, "Could you give less of yourself than your best?"
"Probably not, but your link ignores some of your limits. Don't forget that. We can do this with regular Patroni. Just say the word."
"They will die then."
"They probably will anyway. I'm sorry, but just don't go overboard. Remember the lives that you will never be able to save if you go too far today."
Lafiel said softly, "We understand the situation. On our names we will not fail, nor will we die."
"Good. We'll for what its worth Samantha is recording this event, for our records at least. Maybe even for your order of Merlin," he joked.
Lafiel said, "I will accept no reward for this, succeed or fail."
The others quickly agreed.
"That would be why you probably deserve one," whispered the old goblin. He then asked louder, "Are you ready?"
All four of them stated their readiness. Garnok said, "I'm going to count down from 7. Take the time to focus on your purpose. At this level words, spells, and wand motions are almost meaningless. It is intent given form. The spell is, at this level, potentially what you think it is, so keep focus and have no doubts, for I have none that you will succeed."
"7" Magic began to pool around Harry's hands in the form of a lavender glow.
"6" Hermione and Luna's white light poured into the mix, spilling over to Lafiel's hands and arms.
"5" Sweat started to form on Harry's brow as his wand started to glow a pale blue.
"4" The light spread, not just on his hands or arms, but around his entire body. Lavender light swirled with white, bouncing between Harry and Lafiel.
"3" The light grew. Lavender light swirled and chased, not just among Lafiel and Harry, but among all four, before it blended so there was an even Lavender among them all.
"2" Harry's wand began to slowly smoke.
"1" The sound of a phoenix cry was heard.
"Go." The light shot out in a bar of solid light easily a foot in diameter, until it for the second time formed into a great golden dragon. This time it did not fade, but grew solid before jumping into to the sky and roaring defiance!
The dragon instantly dived, phasing through solid rock before equally fast pulling back up, and setting a large egg shaped rune etched piece of marble.
The wards fell, blowing outward, but it didn't even slow the dragon. He felt their own wards snapping in place, locking the Malfoys inside.
Harry and the others stayed together and stayed focused, even as their power sustained the gigantic construct. The dragon dived once, twice, and one final time, each time bringing up another construct, before fading as soon as the last was placed gently on the ground.
Garnok quickly checked over the egg shaped object, only to determine it was inert, and used magic to open it. To his surprise a girl of no more than ten was there and, whats more she was breathing. He cast several spells rapidly. He looked over at Samantha who was opening the next, "This one is alive." She immediately said, "So is this one." Two other's quickly confirmed the other two were also alive. Amazing.
Garnok pulled a small silver coin from his pocket and laid it on the child before saying, "Activate" even as the other two repeated the action. He said, "Go with them Samantha. Your done here. Keep them alive if you can."
"I will." She activated her own portkey.
Garnok looked back at the Hogwarts students, and was relieved that they were seemingly resting on the ground, even as the rest of his team was already moving in along with the aurors. He glanced at Samantha's crystal recorder, but it should be able to record another ten minutes or so, and such a recording might be important.
He quietly cast a few detection spells on them before saying, "You're also done. Great job. Take the portkey the headmaster gave you and go home."
Luna said, "But what if there are others?"
"My teams know a few tricks. If we find more, we can lock them in. It will tie entire teams up, but we can do it. Go back. Rest, and hopefully we won't find anymore, but if we do you must rest or you will save no one, not even yourselves."
Lafiel got up and bowed slightly more than she did to Ragnok to Garnok. She said, "Thank you for the chance today. As the sole representative of the Abriel in this time, you have our thanks."
Garnok snorted. "You or your group. I'm not sure which. Probably both, have unlocked the actual potential of multi casting. I frankly don't understand it. Children, usual siblings, have occasionally managed it from time to time, but never to this extent, and never more than two. It should not have been possible. It doesn't work beyond you four does it?"
Luna said, "No, I tried with Ginny."
Harry said, "I tried with Daphne, and later even tried again with Lafiel. It doesn't work."
Garnok said, "It is a problem for another time. For now, get going. Eat something. Walk around. Rest. Really just do the stuff in that book of hers about recovering from mental exertion. It says it as well as any I've ever seen it."
They nodded, forming into a group again before Harry activated the portkey.
He saw the Malfoys being portkeyed away and went to stop the crystal recorder. All that was needed was the wrap up. He sat down and listened. Magic lingered in the air. Dark and Light. It was far too hot for anything even semi permanent. Their temporary portkey and anti apparation wards would likely burn in another hour or so, but perhaps by then they could cobble something together. Fortunately, the wards they needed now, did not have any requirement for people to be alive inside of them, which opened up some interesting possibilities. There was a precursor to blood wards that leached magic from inside of it to sustain itself. Some idiot warder thought they had found the ultimate wards, only for his entire clan to end up very much dead when another clan attacked. The wards held perfectly, right up until every clan member was dead and only fell then.
In many ways, what he planned was a simpler form of what was there, but rather than the lives of children it would rip every bit of magic from the Malfoy estate and contents inside it before it collapsed. It was a variant that was almost useless in practice, since any living person inside would cause it to fail, as their will would instantly exert enough control to block it. Fortunately there was only a house elf left, which they would remove. The remaining magic in the air would only feed the new ward scheme.
He walked over to one of the aurors and told them about where the house elf was, and asked him to remove it, so he could bring up wards.
Fifteen minutes later a pair of aurors returned with a stunned house elf. He signaled his crew to get started and outlined his plan. If the ministry wanted in before the wards self collapsed, well, just battering them enough would accelerate the collapse. It amused him greatly to think of a team of aurors exhausted after a day spent ward hammering wards his team had set up in under an hour.
Of course he could be wrong, and the Malfoy's might not have a huge stockpile of magical artifacts and enchanted items that he thought was there, but, from what he was feeling, he very much doubted it. He made a mental note to make sure the ministry knew about the timetable to put up some muggle repelling wards when they did fail."
In the end, they got thirty four more death eaters. An additional four slipped through their fingers and only one additional set of wards like the Malfoys' were found. It was a whole family this time, likely taken before the end of the first war with Voldemort. Team blue, as they were now being called saved them as well. Neither the children in the first, nor the family in the second got away scott free. Their bodies had been trapped in time; their magic and the abomination around them the only thing keeping them alive. At least half of their magic seemed gone for good, but they were alive. They also had no memory of the intervening years, which most everyone agreed was a good thing.
After a short discussion the second Gringotts meeting was moved to the ministry where Voldemort's deformed form was tossed through the veil of death. It was witnessed by the Minister for Magic, multiple Daily Prophet reporters, a half dozen other reporters from around the world and the Headmaster of Hogwarts.
A trial was held immediately afterward that found Peter Pettigrew guilty. The biggest surprise of the trial was that Sirius black was disguised as an attractive middle aged woman. He testified against Peter and then defended himself in turn, easily securing his freedom.
Remus Lupin could barely believe what he was reading. Sirius dressed as a woman was funny as all heck, but all the rest. Voldemort was truly dead. His death eaters were actually standing trial, and generally following after their leader through the veil. So much change, in so little time.
Team blue was perhaps the thing he was most curious about. Their blue hair made them distinctive, and he supposed he could buy the magical accident theory, but the reports of their other work were stunning. A true Patronus. People saved from the kind of dark warding you hear disturbing rumors about. Heck there was even a rumor in the Prophet that they were developing a flying suit. That last one had to be fake. It was always possible they all were, but to what end?
He would have to look Sirius up and see if he could get some answers.
He was glad that Harry looked well. The first task of the Triwizard tournament was only a few weeks away. He would be there...
